“Honestly, I…”, he therefore started and pushed himself away from the kitchen counter, to take a seat at the other chair over the corner to Carlos. “I actually was about to go crazy today. I have no idea how you did this when…!” He only left the typical, all-saying pause and didn’t speak it out explicitly — when their mother left you —, because he didn’t dare to do so. It always made him feel like he was stepping over a borderline whenever they’d talk about this part of Carlos’ history. But the said didn’t seem to bother, or maybe it was because he seemed to get a bit lost in his memory again for a moment, before he shrugged in response. “Well, you… you just grow into it.” A pained look appeared on his face, that revealed all the strains and efforts that he had fought his way through for his kids over the last years - had to: “Because you just don’t have any other choice, you know?” Biting down on his lower lip, Carlos left a little pause and tilted his head to the side. “But, you know… just because I’ve been growing into my role for a few years now — and still am! —, doesn’t mean that I don’t freak out sometimes, too.” He let out a painful laugh. “I actually think every parent does once in a while, but nobody talks about it.  People just pretend they have it all figured out, while on the inside, they’re… just as clueless and insecure as oneself. Especially with parenting, there’s nothing that gets you ready, or no point where you know everything. It’s- …a never-ending process of learning, and growing. And…” He shrugged again, as so often already this evening, probably also because of the tiredness in his bones that made it hard for him to gather the right words together - but nevertheless with an only loving look on his face. “…you’ve simply got thrown into an a bit too high level with today. But only because it had maybe felt too difficult at first, doesn’t mean that you will never get there, you know…?” - and his warm eyes, that were laying all on Lando, said without a single glimpse of doubt in them that he knew that he would get there, with time.

Lando had in fact only just finished his bowl of soup — which hadn’t even tasted too bad! — and had put it aside for maybe ten minutes or so, when they all of a sudden heard the key in the lock of the front door - and both kids, ill or not, jumped to their feet immediately. “Papiiiii!!”, they yelled and were running into the hallway ere Lando could have even pressed pause in the film (that had suddenly become totally unimportant) - and in the next moment, he already heard the “Ouff!” of a very familiar voice when the two kids threw themselves at the late visitor with no holding back; followed by a just as familiar, affectionate laugh: “Hey, you two! Aaaargh, it’s so good to see you!”

So Lando tried to pull himself together again and took a deep breath; but still he had to fight to keep his voice from breaking when he — as calmly as possible — explained once more: “There is really nobody else who can come except me. Her grandparents live in Spain, her mother…-” He made only a vague gesture to indicate that she was out of reach as well, wheresoever she might be. “…and her daddy only comes back to the country late this evening - and she needs to get into her bed!”, he added with a nod downwards to Rita next to him, in the desperate hope that her sight would trigger the two women’s goodwill for children - which they just had to have, if they were working in an elementary school, right...?

Lando was just changing the bedsheets, when suddenly his phone went off in the silence of the otherwisely quiet house. But when he stormed into the kitchen, to get to the phone before the caller would have hung up, it was neither Carlos’ name that was showing in the display, nor his mum’s or George’s nor Alex’ - it was an unknown number. Hu? Despite his initial irritation, he quickly pressed the green button and held the device to his ear, going: “Hello?”, already prepared to get rid of a phone survey or fake advertisement call or the like - only to freeze in shock when a tiny, very familiar voice came out of the speaker: “Lando...? Can you please come pick me up...?”

Be it when he went upstairs with them to brush their teeth together, had them change into their pyjamas or when he tucked them in and turned off the lights - it all went by without any whining or moaning about it. And it also stayed quiet in their bedrooms afterwards, apart from some cute soft snoring noises that Lando could make out when he went to carefully listen at their doors once more after his shower. Both siblings were fast asleep in the land of dreams. So that Lando, when he — refreshed and in a new pair of sweatpants and one of Carlos’ hoodie (…who wasn’t there, couldn’t complain about clothes-stealing, right?) — went to slump down in his gaming chair in the streaming chamber, couldn’t help but grin: Parenting is easy!, he thought as he put on the headphones and got ready to continue with his game test.
