Also in the lore book, The Little Mermaid: Guide to Merfolk, there’s a section on different types of siren songs. There’s a Heart Song, which is the traditional “make people fall for you” song and what Ursula used on Eric, and there’s a Heal Song, which is what Ariel used to save Eric.

it really amazes me that there’s a small handful of people who think eric was only in love with ariel because of her song. sebastian said ariel used her “siren song” to save eric. it didn’t make him fall in love with ariel. the whole point of the movie is that eric falls in love with ariel because of who she is and not her voice. it makes sense that eric wanted to find out who rescued him but he fell head over heels in love with ariel without her saying a single word to him when they were spending time together during their day out (while he had no idea she is the one who rescued him). grimsby told him to go for the person who is in front of him (ariel) and stop focusing on the mystery girl who, for all they know, may not even exist. eric didn’t even seem disappointed when grimsby said they had no luck finding the mystery girl that day.

eric was running to go tell ariel how he feels but then ursula bewitched him using ariel’s voice which she had used in a bewitching spell. she added ariel’s voice into a spell, ariel’s voice itself isn’t bewitching. if ariel’s voice alone made him fall in love then he would’ve been totally and completely in love and focused on vanessa/ursula and forgotten about ariel but he wasn’t/didn’t. if you were paying attention you can clearly see how eric is so confused and conflicted to being drawn to ursula while under this spell. he wasn’t himself and he even knew he wasn’t himself and wasn’t sure why he was feeling this way. unlike in the animation where eric totally forgot about ariel while under the spell, eric’s feelings for ariel are so strong and were fighting with ursula’s spell. he was still so concerned about ariel and worried about her having left the castle. as soon as ursula’s spell was broken eric is still very much in love with ariel because his feelings are 100% real and genuine.

another thing is the writers changed the story of the original so that ariel forgot she had to get eric to kiss/fall in love with her, so their relationship was always real and genuine.

AND did you see ursula’s reaction when eric went over to ariel after he realised it was ariel who rescued him? she yelled at him to get away from ariel because she knew damn well that eric’s feelings for ariel are real and it is true love and if he kissed her in that moment just before the sun set then ariel would stay human and ursula’s plan to keep ariel and take down her father would be ruined.

so, yeah, eric fell well and truly in love with ariel for real

Ooh I like this! Of the two endings I definitely prefer having Ariel kill Ursula because it makes more sense narratively, but I wouldn’t have minded if Eric had a bit more to do during the fight.

I still think he was a useful distraction for Ursula, and he did (unintentionally) show Ariel how to steer a ship and crash into something, but having him be an active distraction with the conch would’ve been a good callback to both the library scene as well as when Ariel intentionally distracted the shark in order to save Flounder.

Although I guess the way it played out did still kind of work out as a callback, but with Eric in Flounder’s place this time.

A nitpick about The Little Mermaid (2023)

Remember the scene in Eric’s treasure trove where he shows Ariel his conch shell, and she shows him how to blow it, and he tries it and fails?

The scene is basically just used as a visual gag to make Sebastian think Ariel and Eric are going to kiss. But I wish something more had actually come of it.

Maybe during the climax, Eric could have blown the conch shell to distract Ursula from Ariel and make himself a target (thus both saving Ariel’s life and allowing her to land the killing blow). This time it would be good and loud, showing that he had actually practiced it on his own, as he told Ariel he would.

I know several people have complained about Eric’s big heroic moment of killing Ursula being given to Ariel in the remake. The biggest complaint seems to be that this was the moment that changed Triton’s mind about humans and made him accept Ariel and Eric’s relationship, and that without it, Triton has no reason to make Ariel a human at the end. (This argument doesn’t really hold up because Triton doesn’t actually see Eric kill Ursula, but maybe Ariel told him about it later? IDK.)

With this idea, they could have kept Ariel killing Ursula in the remake, but also given Eric a heroic moment during the climax, instead of just having him hang uselessly off the mast of the ship. This would also probably carry a lot of weight with Triton since he’s the one who taught Ariel how to blow the conch shell in the first place.

But that’s just my two cents.

The new, second reprise of Part of Your World, having Ariel on the rock in the ocean instead of on a dock, having her drop the little mermaid figurine in the ocean when her tears fell, all of that felt like Disney’s version of the original story’s ending!

In all honesty, am I the only one who watched the little mermaid and immediately didn't think it had the tone of a children's movie? This movie pulled from the other animated sources sure, and has that broadway musical feel as far as numbers go but the whole VIBE of that movie felt very reminiscent of the original story and honestly felt more mature than your standard disney. Even the romance felt more mature. In fact it felt like the most mature out of all the movies they released prior?

And there are still so many things they chose to do that was the complete 480 from what i thought was gonna happen that im still thinking about after a month of seeing it...

Truly the only time I got pulled out of what was going on {which was barely ever because I was just so glued to the screen} was whenever the kids behind me reacted.

I dare say, 2023 Ariel became human for Eric more than 1989 Ariel did.

Disclaimer: this post does not involve mermaids trading their voices for a vagina.

My analysis is supported by these points:

1. Up until Ursula makes her human, Ariel literally idolizes the human world. Then, as soon as she sets foot in Eric’s palace, her bubble is burst, as we can see in the song ‘For the first time’. The only thing easing her discomfort through that time is spending time with Eric in his library;

2. The next day she goes on a trip to the village with Eric, and we see do several things - combing her hair with a fork, eating a flower - that are considered weird by the villagers, and that, again, cause her discomfort. Hadn’t she been with Eric at that moment, the day would have been really awkward for her, possibly ending with her feeling out of place and unwelcome on land;

3. The final scene indicates that Ariel and Eric are leaving their castle to explore uncharted waters, which has Ariel especially excited at the perspective. No mention of the fact that she is gonna miss her new home on the land. Then, right before leaving, she makes this face at the ocean

which clearly indicates that she misses her old home more than the new one. It’s only when Eric brings her attention back to the present, that she literally puts a happy face on for him.

Through the entirety of the movie, the directors make a point of showing Ariel loves the sea more than she loves the land. Which means, Ariel chose to become human because she loves Eric, not because she loves the land.

So, 2023 Ariel is the one who actually left the sea for Eric. 1989 Ariel left the sea because she loved the land.

I honestly dont get the argument of "not everything has to be gay" because like?? not everything has to be straight/cishet either??? obviously you'd like straight stuff more because you're straight? I'm gay, I like gay stuff. Trans people like trans content. Asexuals like asexual content. It's that simple. It's not our fault the majority of show runners and writers are either painfully straight white men/women or homophobic??? not to mention the only shows wlw ever get always get canceled without a reason. gay shows or shows with lgbtq+ representation get shitted on or fetishized, we constantly get queerbaited and some of the only well-written love interests always seem to be the gay romance option that's not even canon. then the moment we have a headcanon or have fun with a ship that we like they have a problem with people shipping two "obviously straight/taken characters", when they would never keep the same energy with other noncanon cishet ships. they only have a problem when the ship is gay. how does people having fun and shipping fictional characters unproblematically harm you in any way??? then they say they're not homophobic or that we always call people who disagree with them homophobic. maybe if so many people are calling you homophobic, that's a sign..??
