Hey brother Do you still believe in one another? Hey sister Do you still believe in love I wonder? Oh, if the sky comes falling down, for you There’s nothing in this world I wouldn’t do

Quote
Anakin hurt so much now it would be easy just to… give in. Give up. Let go. But he couldn’t do that. Hundreds of lives were depending on him. He had to stand here and take it until the generator was fixed-or his heart gave out. So he closed his eyes. Whether it made sense or not he always found it easier to focus his will when cocooned in darkness. With sight denied him all his other senses leapt to keener life. The stink of the shield generator’s scorched circuitry. The stink of burning damotite from the exploded refinery. The stink of his own sweat. He heard-felt-three more explosions. Smaller this time, in swift succession. There were shouts, sirens. Sounds and echoes drumming. The worst of the Force’s insistent warning had faded, leaving him scoured hollow and stunned. Now all he felt in the Force was confusion, fear and pain. Everything he usually felt, no matter where he was. It was terrible and yet, in the strangest way, also comforting. He knew how to deal with that. It was the unknown that made him nervous. How long had he been standing here, holding back the storm? Probably less than an hour. It felt like days. Years. He didn’t have much time before the choice of whether to let go or endure would be out of his hands. Even the Chosen One had limits. He remembered himself as a small boy, boasting to Qui-Gon at his mother’s rough table. Has anyone ever seen a Podrace? I’m the only human who can do it. And now he was probably the only Jedi who could turn himself into a living storm shield.

“After all, what does a politician need with an astromech?” “But I’m a Jedi—” “That’s why I’m not giving him to you,” she’d said with a smile. “I’m asking you to look after him.“

Anakin was never simply “greedy”
There is something that really grinds my gears and drives me nuts about how Gorge Lucas described Anakin’s fatal flaw of “greed”.
It boggles my mind how he reduced Anakin’s problem with toxic attachment to just that: simple greed, with NO acknowledgment of his trauma and mental illness.
Anakin’s original problem wasn’t “greed”.
It was HUNGER.
He had a chronic fear of loss and a chronic emptiness that made him constantly crave to have more and more and more yet still felt constantly unable to fill that void inside his soul.
I’m reminded of another character that had the exact same problem (one that was played by James Earl Jones, ironically enough!):
Troy Maxson
Tumblr media
Here’s how James Earl Jones described him:
Tumblr media
Here you see how Troy’s “hunger” was acknowledged as a tragic symptom of the trauma of living under slavery. It ONLY becomes a moral flaw when Troy didn’t take responsibility for his own spiritual growth and allowed this hunger to turn into selfish greed that ruined his life (he refused to let go of his mistress because she made him feel good, despite his love for his wife and his need to stay married to her).
Anakin - who lived under slavery - didn’t get any of that from Gorge Lucas. No sympathetic acknowledgment and understanding of the traumatic origin of his spiritual hunger.
His natural trauma response was immediately judged as a moral flaw, even BEFORE it turned into selfish greed and toxic attachment.
I guess this is what happens when a privileged white man writes about slavery in a superficial and ignorant way.
Troy’s character was treated with understanding and sympathy but without ever excusing his shitty actions. Why? because his writer was a black man who fully understood the sort of gaping wounds that slavery inflicts on the human soul.
Anakin’s character deserved better writing.

Friendly reminder that fan-made content (fanart, fanfic, fanvids, etc) are:
extremely time consuming. Remember someone actually took time out of their life to create that, time they could’ve used to, idk, sleep, for example
entertainment you’re consuming for free. I can’t stress this enough: you’re enjoying someone else’s craft for free. You paid exactly zero money to look at/read/watch it.
S H A R E D  with you, not made for you. This is the most important point: someone created that, put it online and you found it. No one forced you to consume that fanwork, you C H O S E  to do it.
Whenever you feel like leaving a mean comment, anonymous hate or make a ~clever post about how ‘lol look at all of these overused tropes every fic writer crams into their fics’ remember you’re being a dick to someone who shared their work with you. You’re not being funny, you’re not being edgy, you’re not being brave for calling something out - you’re being a dick.
