i'm okay, more or less, but my brain was definitely scrambled and i didn't rest right away like i should have, so i'm still recovering. hence why i kinda fell off the map pff.

so i apologize for the sudden silence and lack of art. my creative muse hasn't quite returned yet. hopefully soon!

People headcanon Astarion getting emotional/soft/weepy when you do nice things for him but may I present to you:

An Astarion who gets /mad/ about it. You wash his clothes for him while he's gone, and instead of being grateful, he asks you what you want out of it.

You bring him things you think he will like, extra loot, etc and of course he takes it and is ever so grateful... but his eyes narrow in suspicion and a frown tugs at his lips. He stares at the items, turning them over, wondering what's wrong with them.

Give me an Astarion who is always waiting 'for the other shoe to drop', who questions every kind thing you try to do, who accepts it but does not bask in your light- he winces, for it is too bright.

Give me Astarion learning how to trust your kindness with the same enthusiasm one would have going to the dentist to get a rotten tooth pulled without anesthetic.

I actually really like that astarion looks... I don't want to say aged, but like... Idk how to describe it.. adult?? So many times in media they always make a point to mention how youthful vampires are and how smooth their skin is. But astarion has laugh lines, his skin wrinkles when he emotes. And it's the most beautiful thing I've ever seen. He's ethereal and gorgeous. And I find it hilarious how he has a line where he goes "and beautiful. Not enough people mention that!" Because if only he knew how much brainrot he's caused in the minds of hundreds of people online simply by existing

"Astarion is inherently evil" is so funny to me as an argument because one of his key defining characterizations that shaped his worldview was being severely punished for trying to help someone and having any sort of empathy and altruism beaten out of him by Cazador lol

It's not even that I think he couldn't be a corrupt magistrate, because i *do* think he was, but - aside from most of this backstory obviously being scrapprd - I feel like his corruption was tied to being ignorant and self serving/hedonistic rather than outwardly malicious

Dunno how to put it properly into words but lately I find myself thinking more about that particular innocence of fairy tales, for lack of better word. Where a traveller in the middle of a field comes across an old woman with a scythe who is very clearly Death, but he treats her as any other auntie from the village. Or meeting a strange green-skinned man by the lake and sharing your loaf of bread with him when he asks because even though he's clearly not human, your mother's last words before you left home were to be kind to everyone. Where the old man in the forest rewards you for your help with nothing but a dove feather, and when you accept even such a seemingly useless reward with gratitude, on your way home you learn that it's turned to solid gold. Where supernatural beings never harm a person directly and every action against humans is a test of character, and every supernatural punishment is the result of a person bringing on their own demise through their own actions they could have avoided had they changed their ways. Where the hero wins for no other reason than that they were a good person. I don't have the braincells to describe this better right now but I wish modern fairy tales did this more instead of trying to be fantasy action movies.
