Beware the man that can hear the data speak
The data doesn't lie; 100% of all people who read this article are magnificent and beautiful human beings and are the envy of all those who come in contact with them.
I’m sure we’ve all heard some variation of the phrase “this is what the data says” or “the data speaks for itself.” It’s a nifty phrase, in that it conveys the idea that what is being “said” by the data is so basic and self-evident that it is uncontroversial, and that anyone that disagrees with the data “says” is debating reality itself. In my opinion, though, it is an insidious way to shut down…

DNC files lawsuit to keep RUSSIA "collusion" in public mind, since Muller investigation won't come up with anything
"Show some capacity for self-reflection? Nah, that's not 'us'" -Democrats
I could link a serious article about this lawsuit. It has some quotes where every word, including “and” and “the,” is a bald-faced lie, like DNC Chair Tom Perez saying their suit “is not partisan, it’s patriotic.” It also has this overwrought gem, also from Perez: “If the occupant of the Oval Office won’t protect our democracy, Democrats will. It is our obligation to the American people.” Oh, and…

A new rocket to go to Mars, and a satellite to look for planets beyond
Still waiting for the Priceline discount ticket to Mars, though
Some exciting news in the world of space! (Space world? Space field, maybe? Eh, whatever.) First up, SpaceX receives approval to build their new BFR at the Port of Los Angeles: The Los Angeles Board of Harbor Commissioners voted unanimously Thursday to approve a permit that allows SpaceX to build and operate a facility at the Port of L.A. to develop its BFR rocket and spaceship system. The formal…

NYT and WaPo win Pulitzer Prize for reporting on something that "possibly" happened.
Alternate Title: New York Times fails to respond to allegations concerning their sponsorship of an illegal cockfighting ring.
No joke; it’s right in the New York Times’ tweet: https://twitter.com/nytimes/status/985971703284162561 I hereby announce that tomorrow I’m going to publish part one of a twenty-part exposé of the New York Times and the illegal cockfighting ring they sponsor in hidden locations throughout Manhattan. You think there’s no such thing? Well, I have one thing to say to you: It’s possible. I’m sure the…

California Dyin'? Businesses leaving the Golden State
If you want more of something, subsidize it. Make sure you know what you're actually subsidizing first, though.
California is a really nice place to live. The combination of natural beauty and a booming economy has made California the most populous state in the US, and for a lot of these almost 40 million people, life is pretty great. But what would happen if the people running the state forgot the core reasons people choose to go somewhere in the first place, and instead focus on their superficial…

Should you commit suicide? [SPOILER: NO]
People can't understand you if you won't let them.
So, there’s this machine that someone is designing called a “Sarco:” A controversial suicide pod that enables its occupant to kill themselves at a press of a button went on display at Amsterdam funeral show on Saturday. Called the “Sarco”, short for sarcophagus, the 3D-printed machine invented by Australian euthanasia activist Philip Nitschke and Dutch designer Alexander Bannink comes with a…

Massive rare-earth mineral deposit found off the coast of Japan
Rejoice, electronics manufacturers of the world!
Good news for electronics manufacturers and consumers! Researchers have found a deposit of rare-earth minerals off the coast of Japan that could supply the world for centuries, according to a new study. The study, published in the journal Nature on Tuesday, says the deposit contains 16 million tons of the valuable metals. This is excellent news, in my opinion. Nearly all current production of…

Secretary of Defense performs essential job function
Next on CNN: Top canine experts warn that dog may bite man.
Apparently, that’s news to CNN: Top military officials, including Defense Secretary James Mattis, warned President Donald Trump during an afternoon meeting Thursday that he risks escalating US involvement in Syria if he goes forward with the type of aggressive bombing campaign he has pressed for over the past week, according to US and western officials briefed on the conversation. Trump has…

America is finally getting back in the manned spaceflight game
One day, I hope to complain about the quality of spaceline peanuts.
Big news in the space world! If all goes well during a flurry of testing over the coming months, Boeing’s CST-100 Starliner will carry two astronauts to orbit in November, followed by SpaceX’s Crew Dragon in December. Those first manned flights by these companies would usher in the first-ever commercial taxi service to earth orbit in 2019, followed by a battle to tempt high-spending tourists to…

Calm down. You don't actually know what you're angry about.
The thought that the boogeyman doesn't exist is the the most terrifying thought of all.
So, President Trump (allegedly) said that Haiti, El Salvador and some African countries are “shithole countries.” So what? What exactly is objectionable to you about this statement? Maybe you think the statement is racist. Why, then, does your mind immediately leap to connect poverty with people of color? Do you think that poverty and having dark skin are inseparable? If so, do you realize how…

Who, or what, commits the action?
Can a pen write a play?
First, I want to show a picture of one of the world’s greatest writers, whose works have transcended the ages and are adored to this day: Hmm, actually, that’s not a very good picture. A rather poor composition, in fact; it doesn’t really focus on the subject at all. Here, let me crop it down: There we go! Now the focus is where it should be, on this pen named Shakespeare. This pen, shown in this…

Los Angeles Dodgers finish regular season with the best record in baseball
World Series? Yes, please.
It was rough going in the early part of September, but the Los Angeles Dodgers were able to turn it around in the last 10 games of the season, winning 8 games and only losing 2. With that, the Dodgers have secured the best record for the 2017 season at 104 wins to 58 losses, and the Dodgers will have home field advantage throughout the postseason. And as you may have surmised, I’m quite excited.…

Star Trek: Discovery first episode review [SPOILERS]
Hesitant, but hopeful.
A little while ago, I had expressed some concerns about Star Trek: Discovery and the direction the show creators were taking the show. So now that the first episode of the new series is out, I thought I should do a review. Short review: I’m still hesitant. Long review, with spoilers: I can’t really say that I like what they’ve done with the Klingons. I don’t think there was a good reason to make…

The squeaky wheel gets the grease, but isn't automatically right. Or popular.
(Artificially dyed and flavored) Trix are for kids!
You know that person at work. Nothing is ever good enough. They keep complaining and complaining, they spend more time in the manager’s office than their own work area, and for what? Stupid stuff that most people don’t care about, and doesn’t even make sense most of the time. Eventually, they get the changes they want, and it turns out to be a mess. No one likes the changes, and these changes…

Why the metric system isn't the best for everything
Why the metric system isn’t the best for everything
So apparently pirates are the reason the US doesn’t use the metric system: In 1793, botanist and aristocrat Joseph Dombey set sail from Paris with two standards for the new “metric system”: a rod that measured exactly a meter, and a copper cylinder called a “grave” that weighed precisely one kilogram. He was journeying all the way across the Atlantic to meet Secretary of State Thomas Jefferson —…

California finally trying to reduce barriers to housing
Maybe some day, California will finally welcome poor and middle-class people!
And I don’t mean “gentrification” or “redlining” or whatever. I mean the real problem: over-regulation. The California State Assembly recently passed SB-35 Planning and zoning: affordable housing: streamlined approval process. The bill aims to reduce the opportunities that NIMBYs and other anti-development advocates have to block housing, which seems to show that some people in the California…

Follow this one easy trick to sow discord in the world
Works every time!
I’m sure everyone has been in some sort of collective guilt situation before. Maybe it was a class in school, maybe it was a group of friends. Someone in your group did something bad, and some authority figure too lazy or incompetent to assign blame to the correct person and punish that person accordingly instead punishes your entire group. In the short term, you and your peers are mad at the…
