I was thinking about S1 Steve and how he overreacts about Nancy and Jonathan. We know that Steve’s Dad is probably, if not definitely, cheating on his Mom. This creates the situation of her going on business trips with his Dad and leaving Steve alone. This has obviously been happening long enough that it’s well known Steve has parties and gets around. It doesn’t seem like Steve has had a “real girlfriend” before and just has hookups or flings before courting Nancy.

He goes after Nancy, the girl who’s a little younger, inexperienced, kind, caring, intelligent. Someone he clearly has actual feelings for and WANTS to date, not just hookup with. It seems as though this is out of his comfort zone, being in a relationship and he doesn’t totally know how to act (he’s a dork when trying to get a girl to do more than fuck him).

His parents have given him a fucked up idea of what love and relationships mean. He has no idea how to communicate with a partner or treat a proper girlfriend, no one he trusts for advice. He doesn’t have any meaningful relationships, ones with reciprocity until Nancy (Tommy and Carol are shit and we see his lack of friends in S3). People use Steve for his big empty house, money, status, sex, no one seemingly gives a shit about Steve.

He sees Nancy and Jonathan together and he thinks immediately of the relationship he knows: cheating. He’s also a hormonal teenager and he overreacts. He is genuinely worried about her when he goes to see her and the first girl he lets himself have as more, seemingly breaks his trust with a guy he clearly doesn’t trust (camera situation).

It’s still such a shitty thing to do to let your “friends” say something about your “girlfriend” so publicly but we also know he clearly regrets it (cleaning, going to apologize, fighting a monster). It doesn’t excuse his behaviour but explains it.

That “King Steve” facade was always there to protect him from all the shit he got in life and yeah he wasn’t a great person but we see how much he tries and wants to be better as S2 Steve is trying, in his own way to support Nancy (who doesn’t seem to be supporting him back - Barb died in his backyard).

Then we know it all goes to (bull)shit as Nancy falls apart and takes it all out on Steve and then runs off and completes Steve’s S1 fear, her cheating on him with Jonathan (even though Jonathan took and developed pictures of her undressing with Steve - so fucked up).

He realizes he is in the same position as his Mom, but he lets her go because he knows that he can’t make her happy and doesn’t want to be with someone who doesn’t love him.

Steve just wants someone to love him.

not to be emo on main but the reason Steve Harrington has such an amazing arc is because he, arguably, doesn’t gain much from becoming a better person. he loses his friend group. ends up picking up a bat to fight a monster because nancy and jonathan are in danger. and when he gets dumped? well, might as well help this random kid that i sort of know fight another monster. oh, there’s a secret base? let me get tortured so my friends don’t. when he and the others escape the mall, it’s Steve who leads the charge from weathertop and goes back to save his ex girlfriend and her new boyfriend and helps fight a massive monster solely because it’s the right thing to do. homeboy risks his life over and over for a group of kids and doesn’t expect anything in return. like at all. he doesn’t get the girl, he certainly loses his job, and he regularly gets the crap beaten out of him. but he does it anyway.
