blue hues watch as she takes the time to offer support & acknowledgement , which was more than enough for him. they both lived in the shadow of another , albeit he felt even worse because the one casting the shadow deserved every ounce of the spotlight shining upon them. barbie's success & happiness brought him comfort , brought him pride , yet failed to bring him acceptance with his own position in the world. he finds himself engrossed in what she's saying , tilting his head before shaking it & raising his hand to ease her self-caution. ❝ there's a role out there just for you , erika. you're the main character in your own story , okay ? ❞ he leans forward to nudge her arm , smiling still at her attempts to lighten his spirits. ❝ you've helped already. now i owe you one , don't i ? ❞
erika couldn't help but to feel sorry for ken. he was always overlooked. everything was always about barbie, never about ken. ❛ is there anything i can do to help you out? i'm sorry you feel like that ... ❜ she sighed, her blue eyes aimed toward the floor.
all my life i’ve always wanted to have one day just for me [ ken carson ] ʚɞ @justsken , accepting
she looked back up to him, ❛ i know how it feels. the industry barely lets me have a say in any of the jobs i do. you know, barbie always gets the lead roles. i'm always either her photo double or her twin sister. i've never been the main character. ❜ it wasn't her intention to make the situation about herself, she wanted to show ken that he wasn't alone. ❛ i'm serious, though. please let me know if there is anything i can do to make you feel better. ❜

despite the terrifying amount of changes in his life , jessie was the one constant that kept him tied down. whenever his head got too big or the stars were too tempting not to reach for , she spun her lasso towards him. her response spurs his own smile , watching as she races ahead & he lets out his own laugh. ❝ you're making me blush , jessie. ❞ a beat , rushing forward with dallas in tow to catch up to her. once they were inside , he wasted no time in adjusting the saddle to begin their ride. ❝ if only we could tell nineteen year old us how easy their lives are , right ? you're the only breath of fresh air i get these days. ❞ a pause , turning to watch her. ❝ a lot's changed , hm ? ❞
the wind was just perfect for a ride on bullseye . once belonging to her older brother , woody - the horse was now the only remembrance she had of her old life , and they've created even more memories together being on the road before settling down. bullseyes getting older now , she can tell with the way he's slowing down . but he still rides like the wind . at ken's voice , a small smile appears across her face . been friends since she first landed into town at age nineteen , and now jessie's almost thirty , and they're still riding their horses together . " i thought you'd never ask . " she says playfully , nudging her elbow against him before speeding off into the barn with the bags of apples slung across her shoulder . " even if i had plans , i'd rather be here with you and bullseye anyway . the zoo is hard work , but ridin' here is freeing . "

ken watches with anticipation as the cloud clears from above his friend's head. the sun hadn't started to shine yet , though the lack of rain was improvement if any. he tried to imagine himself in the other position , trapped behind countless rejections & failed auditions. it was evidence enough that the industry was unjust. he saw the potential shape mason , if only others could see it too , especially mason himself. his free hand reaches to take the coffee pushed towards him , lifting it up to finish it off. waste not want not , he always thought. with his mouth still half-full with coffee & pie , he leans forward to respond.
❝ because it's cheap & convenient , they make up for the lack of quality & taste. ❞ his response was quick & prepared , as if this diner was the backbone of his nutritional intake. he saw the effort mason made to find his footing , waiting for some wise producer to open the door & allow mason to wedge his foot promptly within. as he swallows down his breakfast , winking & pointing at him with confident finesse. truthfully , he was panicking on how to keep supporting his friend through countless heartaches. he was glad he could feign confidence. he cleans up the table , placing down the money before shuffling out from the booth. ❝ what ? you don't want to burn off those cheap pancakes ? rollerblading relieves you physically & mentally , ace. don't knock it. now come on , optimus prime. we've got lines & pizza waiting for us. ❞
another audition , another rejection. it's been the same song & dance every single time ━━ rinse , lather , repeat. the more mason gets dismissed , the more it begins to make him wonder if maybe he's in the wrong industry , allowing the talent scouts & agents less than enthusiastic reactions to his performance get to him when he knows that's the last thing he should do. at least he has ken here for moral support , a friend who's been there for him since the start of this whole endeavor. ken's had more luck in auditions than he has , not that he isn't surprised considering his talents , & he's thankful that despite the growing fame , he still remains at his side. not a lot of people can say that about most of the actors of today. somehow , ken remains a good friend. maybe a little too into himself at times , but a friend nonetheless.
❝ why do we even come to this diner ? ❞ he finally says after a beat , pushing his coffee away from reach. ❝ i know we usually can't afford good food most of the time , but there's gotta be better options. ❞ humor has always been mason's best tool in his arsenal when it comes to moments like this , wanting to get back on his feet & continue on working toward his dream rather than wallow in misery. sure , the misery will return , it always does & he can deal with that when ken's not around. but for now , a movie night coupled with some line run throughs sounds like the best way to end this less than perfect day. ❝ you know just what to say , dude , ❞ mason says with a laugh , patting his shoulder. ❝ i'm just glad you didn't suggest fucking rollerblading because i am so not in the mood for cardio. robots & maybe i'll order us a pizza or something. then maybe you can tell me about your next job. i'm dying to know what commercial or show you booked. ❞

PROMPTS FROM HIS GIRL FRIDAY
* assorted dialogue from the 1940 film, adjust as necessary
he looks like that fellow in the movies.
it frightens me to think of what i'd like to do to you.
where'd you get the hat?
did you see me in your dreams?
i know what quitting would mean to you!
it's the other way around.
listen, it's a matter of life and death!
well, it's not like that.
we might dynamite it.
i'd know you anytime.
that's the speech you made the night you proposed.
oh, don't get technical at a time like this.
that's why i'm quitting!
she hung up! what did i say?
take your hands off me!
he's kind and he's sweet and he's considerate. he wants a home and children.
never mind the jokes.
oh, well, that relieves my mind.
sorta wish you hadn't done that, [name].
our whole lives are at stake!
it was cruel of us to let you suffer that way.
it brings good luck.
you know, he's not such a bad fellow.
isn't [name] sweet? always wanting to protect me.
what were you when you came here five years ago?
i wouldn't cover the burning of rome for you if they were just lighting it up.
what does he look like?
he's not the man for you. i can see that. but i sort of like him. he's got a lot of charm.
you've got the brain of a pancake.
i've been a reporter for 20 years... i never heard that before.
i'd put my arm in fire for you, up to here.
you say that again, i'll come over there and kick you in the teeth.
what's the matter, [name]?
don't give me that innocent stuff!
who else was there when he gave you this?
she was born right here in this country!
maybe the sheriff let him out.
you've got an old fashioned idea divorce is something that lasts forever.
you don't deny that, do you?
that isn't what i got married for!
are we invited to the wedding?
you wouldn't take me if i hadn't been doll-faced.
how did i treat you? like a water buffalo?
now you got me!
if you were worth breaking my nails on, i'd tear your face wide open.
is there any way we can stop the 4:00 train to albany?
i suppose i proposed to you?
don't be hasty!
what does he want with you?
well, what are you doing there? haven't you even started?
you practically did, making goo-goo eyes at me for two years until i broke down.
what's the use of fighting?
this is only temporary!
it's all in little pieces now, and i hope to do the same for you some day.
of course he had to have a gun re-enact the crime with.
if you had been a gentleman, you would have forgotten all about it. but not you!
i just said i'd write it, i didn't say i wouldn't tear it up!
i know it's on the way.
what do you think i am, a crook?
uh... let me get this straight. i must have misunderstood you.
don't you remember the home i promised you?
there's been a lamp burning in the window for you, honey.
looks like about ten years a piece for you two birds.
that isn't going to help you this time.
you're through.
well, [name], where are you?
that's the story i just wrote.
yes, yes, i know we had a bargain.
i thought it would be a novelty to have a face around here a man could look at without shuddering.
i jumped out of that window a long time ago.
he treats me like a woman.
[name], you're wonderful, in a loathsome sort of way.
now get this, you double-crossing chimpanzee.
there ain't gonna be an interview, and there ain't gonna be a story.
did you hear that?

hands hold the ends of his stethoscope loosely , allowing his arms to dangle casually as they stroll through the hospital interior. he saw as his expression twisted before softening , finally accepting the nonchalance of his point. he saw him everyday , he knew their free time was sacred , especially as doctors. if they got the chance to share that time , great. if not , there was always next time. ken especially didn't mind ensuring he wasn't intruding upon his friend's love life. he smiles at his suggestion , heart warmed by his effort. he drops one hand to place it reassuringly on his back. ❝ sure. sounds like an excellent idea. now if only i can muster the courage to ask out barbie. the double dates would be insane , right ? ❞
𝙰𝙽𝚂𝚆𝙴𝚁𝙴𝙳 𝙼𝙴𝙼𝙴 | @justsken ❛ so why’s it so important anyway? ❜
patrick couldn't help but smile at ken. he had a point. hands scratch the back of his neck as they walk through the hospital corridor. he hated declining the idea of having ken on a special date night that was being planned. ❛❛ david and I may work together & live together , but we don't see each other like we should. when I am in surgery , he isn't. when I am at our place he is on call. vice versa. so we like to spend time together whenever we can. ❜❜ he really wanted to invite his friend to a night out but there was something stopping him from actually doing it. then a metaphorical idea popped in his head like a light bulb. ❛❛ I do have an idea! maybe we can take a trip somewhere in a few weeks. get out of the city. what do you say? ❜❜
