Ok I'm trying again. I've gotten over the dungeon master pun so I'm gonna say what I actually meant to.
Anime onlys don't look.
So the thing about the dungeon masters is, I know we saw dungeon masters of different races in the epilogue, but I think Rui-sensei was trying to make a point in having three of the four dungeon masters we know best being elves, and the one to actually defeat the demon being a human.
Elves are the longest lived species and they have a habit of treating everyone else as children or pets. They also have the greatest grasp on magic. And it's explicitly said that the elves are the ones who hide the true nature of dungeons and demons from the other races, because they think the other races can't handle it. But it is Marcille, Thistle, and Mithrun who fall to the demon's tricks. Even though the elves think of themselves as above the other races, these three fall to the demon. You could argue that they didn't realize that the demon was dangerous, and it's true, they didn't know. But I'm talking from a meta-perspective--why was it that it's the *elves* who fall for the demon? Because the elves have always been prideful. They think they know better than any other race.
And then we have Laois. And he too falls to the demon. First, I love that because throughout the story, we've had this dichotomy of "Laois loves monsters" and "Laois wants to protect the people he loves". And they have always been treated as mutually exclusive--Laois can't indulge in his monster love without hurting his friends. But then, we see that once his friends give his monster obsession a chance, they can find things they like about it too. Marcille is still creeped out when she thinks too hard about where the food comes from, but she's willing to eat the finished product (which, lbr, is most modern peoples reactions to food). Chilchuck started thinking Senshi and Laois were crazy, but by the end of it, he was ok with it. Even Izutsumi comes around.
And then, Laois gets his wish. To become his super cool original monster oc donut steal. And everyone is prepared for the worst. Everyone thinks this is Laois' betrayal--he couldn't hold back against his monster obsession and thus he will kill all the humans.
Only, he doesn't. It is by becoming this monster that he gains his power to defeat the winged lion. It is his love of monsters and his want to be one that creates his ability to protect the ones he loves. Even though they still don't fully understand him, even though the lion offered him what he always wanted--he used his love of monsters for his friends and family. And really.... That's what he's always been doing. No one else saw it at first, but he has always been using his obsession to help the people he loves. And even at the very end, he did the same.
And anyway, I think that's an important reason why the elves kept falling to the demon. The elves are magical and long lived and wise, but from what we see, they're.... Lonely. They have their strict hierarchy and their stuffy rules with each other, and with other races, they take on the role of sole caretaker to these little things who can't possibly understand the "real world." Even Marcille falls to this. But Laois, who has always been on the outside, never stopped trying to empathize with others. He calls Chilchuck "Chil" (something extremely personal to halflings); he doesn't hold a grudge when Namari leaves the group after Falin dies; hell, even though it didn't end well, his insistence on being friendly with Toshiro was probably him trying to avoid doing to Toshiro what others have always done to him. He adores Senshi and Izutsumi. His succubus is Marcille smiling. He isn't lonely anymore.
And the elves who become dungeon masters, don't seem to have that. Mithrun felt alone due to his lover and brother. Marcille and Thistle both felt like they had to protect their shorter lived family. But Laois didn't feel that isolation. Well, he did in his village. But when meeting with his friends and forming their little party, he realized he wasn't alone anymore. And that became more important than even being a monster.

i must not stir the pot. stirring the pot is the notifications-killer. participation in the discourse is the little-death that brings total activity obliteration. i will face the bad opinions on the internet. i will permit them to pass over me and through me. and when they have gone past, i will turn the block button onto their source. where the discourse has come from there will be nothing. only i will remain.

I don't have Yuu but I've been dying to know what she looks like in live2d. Vivi posted these images in the discord last night but I wanted to see her for myself in motion. Luckily she does indeed appear in the event, so

I think it's interesting that unlike every other magical girl so far, she has this crooked neck. Even more interesting, it's present also outside of her magical girl form.
There's something a little off about it. I know this gal is like, 2edgy4me but I genuinely really like a lot of the design decisions made for her. She just comes across as otherwordly, from her witch-like magical girl design to how she stands differently from other magical girls, to her blank eyes and hidden mouth. I just really like it.
If any girl deserves to be void: it's her. I can genuinely believe she snapped when she made her wish and that whatever we're seeing now is someone very different from the person she was before. It's almost like she's an animated doll walking around, a body that doesn't know it's dead yet. I'm fascinated.

Yuu is a horse girl.
She walks on four legs like a horse. She roleplays a horse in her idle animation.
Her witch form is a horse.
Ultimate horse girl I love her so much.

OK TIME FOR MY FUN FAN THEORY BC I LOVE YUU
Charlotte has her two forms, the baby form and the worm form. The worm form comes from out of her mouth like a tongue. Also, the worm has an extremely pointy nose... Almost like Yuu's forehead horn.
Yuu's mouth is extremely wide. Almost like it's been cut open. Charlotte's mouth had to open extremely wide for Worm-Charlotte to appear.
Yuu killed Nagisa's mom and harvested her organs right in front of her, which is also shortly before Nagisa turned into a witch. We've seen magical girl's witch forms being influenced by events that happened shortly before they died (ex Octavia uses train wheels, Sayaka transformed in a train station).
So I think that Yuu's "weapon" is a long prehensile tongue. She uses it to pierce people and remove their organs without using her hands. And perhaps her mouth is a bag of holding similar to Homura's shield--when she needs to store something, she undoes the stitches and "eats" it. When Nagisa saw Yuu attack her mother in this way, it influenced Charlotte's witch form.
Anyway that's just my game theory. Probably not true but I like the body horror aspect.
Tumblr media
So with the full release of her design, I have to ask. How the hell does she steal people's organs with those hooves?? It looks like she can probably remove them but how the hell is she killing people efficiently enough to steal their organs fully intact?? Is she switching back to her human form to actually remove them?? I feel like the constant blunt force trauma would not keep organs in good enough shape to sell. Yeah she's got spikes on her hooves but it's still mostly just bashing stuff.

Also, I'm not trying to be mean about the art style here, the show has a great art style and it does have a lot of variation in faces across the different groups but like. I also feel there's a lot of.... Not exactly "same face syndrome" but definitely "they reuse a lot of physical attributes because it's an animated show with a lot of characters so they can't spend all their time designing everyone to be unique syndrome" and "animated characters will often have fluctuating details between episodes due to different storyboarders/being off model/budget cuts/etc etc etc syndrome" and "the show wanted each nation's aesthetic to be the same within the nation to show how separated the four nations are, resulting in many characters being mostly identifiable via eye color, skin color, and the color of their clothes." So the fluctuating details of main characters plus the simplicity/reuse of certain attributes plus the art style itself makes it easy to find similarities where none were intended (in my opinion).
Like, the best example I can think of is Korra and Katara. People site their similarities a lot in their examples, but like. Korra and Katara came from the same tribe; they both have dark skin, dark hair, and blue eyes. Their faces are kinda same, but mostly in the way a lot of Southern/Northern water tribe women look. Like, I guess they look similar, but honestly, I think Katara's face is more similar to Yue's than Katara's is to Korra's. Mainly due to the eyes and nose--Katara and Yue's eyes are bigger on their faces than Korra's, and Korra has a stronger nose that takes up more of her face and makes her eyes comparatively smaller. And comparing grandma Katara to Korra is difficult as well because, well. Ones an old lady and the other is a young adult. And I personally don't really see the similarities in Ta Min and Aang beyond the art style + grey eye color. But even then, I can't really tell the similarities of the eye/nose/mouth shapes because sure, there's shots where Aang's eyes are similar shapes and his nose may look flat like Ta Min's, but there's also times where they look nothing alike due to Aang being the main character of an animated show. Further, the art style will often give younger boys and most women big eyes and round faces, but adult men will have smaller eyes, more defined jaws, and more prominent noses. Personally, I think Aang of ATLA looks just as much like Ta Min as Aang of LOK looks like young Sozin.
Though maybe Roku loved them both. We stan a bi king.
I do agree though that it's likely that it became a case of ascended fanon, at least in terms of the novel. Like I said, I don't think it's a completely terrible theory, I just think it's hard to find definite evidence in the animated show because of how animation and the art style works. Maybe next round, we'll see a earth bender with an amazing modelling career ahead of them.
Also, given how unsubtle the live action has been so far, I wonder if they'd have this theory by putting Aang's actor in a dress and have him play Ta Min. Ha ha, JK. Unless...
where does the idea that the avatar looks like the previous avatar's love fall on the spectrum
Tumblr media
at first i was gonna put it as unintentional but the novels giving yangchen a water tribe love interest makes me feel like at the very least f.c. yee saw the theory and incorporated it on purpose. everything else could've just been a coincidence where they happened to give two characters love interests from the next element in the cycle (rangi, katara) and design two characters similarly (aang & ta min) but with the yangchen novels in the mix it's just too many coincidences, especially bc i know that theory was floating around before the yangchen novels (maybe even the kyoshi novels too)
that said i don't really find it compelling. it's cute i guess? doesn't really add anything for me. it's not bad but i don't have strong feelings about it. except maybe that i don't really see it with ummi & kyoshi and i think maybe the roku & rangi and korra & katara things are just that they're from the same nation and have the same basic coloring. like it's a show with zero white people made for an english-speaking audience that includes a lot of white fans. there's a possibility that a fan theory based on characters looking alike might be wrong

Speaking of things easier than grief seeds, doppel-ing is much better than grief seeds too (at least from my understanding; I only read the English version of the gacha game, not the translations of Arc 2 and beyond) and I don't understand why Kyuubey didn't want it.
Like, if becoming a witch releases a huge amount of despair into the world and fulfills part of that quota kyubey talks about, well. Girls can only become witches once. But even if doppels release a smaller amount of despair, there's no cap on how much you can doppel. It may take a while depending on the measurable difference between doppels and witches (we don't really get a unit of measurement of despair), but if you keep a girl alive long enough, her doppel will always end up overtaking whatever amount of despair her witch form gave.
Sorry to change the subject I just think a lot about how Kyubey really should have run his idea by a 12-14 year old girl first, because Madoka and the hospital trio both made much better systems on the second draft.
like the thing is that thinking about it logistically grief cubes really are just so much better. even like not taking into account that grief cubes are much more automatically renewable then grief seeds (you don't need anyone to die) and that they wraiths by their nature encourage group fights, the fact that there are more cubes that each take a smaller amount of grief means it's easier to split them up equally between people
