so a few days ago I saw this post, and the accompanying tags from @brrmian :
Tumblr media Tumblr media
the idea of Cody being simultaneously so cool on the surface and constantly overanalysing every interaction stuck with me so much that I ended up spitting all my thoughts into existence
so
enjoy a brief look into Commander Cody's mind:

Especially since some families don't change their minds even after suffering. Like the family in Oregon who didn't believe in vaccination whose child was hospitalized for almost two months with tetanus, who when he was released refused any further vaccinations. A little child who had to spend more than a month in darkness, sedated, alone and the parents were still worried about...I don't know, tracking chips? (The family was never identified to protect the child's privacy so we have no information about why they declined further shots). Or the Stephan family (who we unfortunately know about because their son died and unlike health information, court cases are public record), who were unrepentant about being antivaxx after their son died of meningitis and empyema (lung infection).
(broke this into a readmore, cw: child suffering/death, protect your mental health if you need to)
The problem in cases like those is a kind of sunk cost fallacy; they can't accept that they made such a big mistake that it resulted in their child's suffering or death. So they convince themselves that there's no way to know their child wouldn't have gotten sick anyway, or that something even worse would have happened if they had been vaccinated (although what's worse than DEATH in excruciating pain exactly, I'm not sure). And in the Stephans' case, the child's grandfather had a thriving supplement business after blaming his wife's suicide from bipolar disorder on "big pharma" and "curing" his children by giving them the herbal cocktail he invented which was supposed to help "depression, schizophrenia, bi-polar disorder, ADHD, autism and anxiety" that the child's father David Stephan's main income came from, so accepting they were wrong about a) not getting Ezekiel vaccinated against pneumococcus or Hemophilus influenzae (HIb), not taking him to the doctor when he refused to eat for days and was being hydrated by EYEDROPPER, or taking him to the ER instead of a naturopath when his little body was too rigid to place in a carseat and instead they put a crib mattress in the back and took him to the naturopath that way two days before he stopped breathing and they FINALLY took him to the hospital would mean losing their part of the business as well as killing their child and well...people have gone into denial over less.
Meningitis is a hideous, painful way to die.
The thing about the Stephans that sticks with me were the parents saying "haven't we been punished enough? Nothing will bring Ezekiel back" with FOUR WHOLE OTHER UNVACCINATED CHILDREN THAT THEY DON'T INTEND TO START VACCINATING. Yeah, nothing is bringing back the one that died - and nothing is stopping something unneeded and awful from happening to the other four. What about the other four, David and Collet? What about the other four?
But no, they still believe they're being unfairly persecuted.

The Iranian Regime is going to execute rapper Toomaj Salehi for supporting protests of Jina Amini’s murder by the regime in his songs.
Iranian activist Elica Le Bon says, “Iranians in the diaspora picked up on the fact that the regime tends not to execute people who become known to the international community. We have seen many examples of prisoners that were either released on bail or had their sentences commuted through our “say their names to save their lives” campaign on social media, using hashtags to garner attention for their causes, and even before social media existed, through getting the stories of political prisoners to international media outlets. Once reported on, and once the eyes shift to the regime and the reality of its pending brutality, realizing that the action is not worth the repercussions, we have seen them back down and not execute. For that reason, this is part of an urgent campaign for readers to talk about Toomaj as much as you can, using the hashtag #FreeToomaj or #ToomajSalehi. Every comment makes a difference, and if we were wrong, what did we lose by trying?”

if any of y'all see posts about house m.d on tumblr and think "I wanna watch that" you need to know that you can skip episodes. i would argue skipping certain episodes is vital to having an enjoyable house experience. house md is one of my favorite shows and has been genuinely important to me as an autistic queer chronically ill cane user. it also revels in it's main character being offensive for the sake of being offensive with that special early 2000s flair. if you care about the concept of fatphobia you will be unable to have a uncomplicated relationship with this show. for every earthshatteringly homoerotic hilson moment and every profoundly accurate disabled scene we the viewers must pay in some insane misogyny. that's just how it is on this bitch of a show

I'm reading a book named "A Guide to The Correction of Young Gentlemen Or, The Successful Administration Of Physical Discipline To Males, By Females" - essentially, a fantasy femdom BDSM book, written in 1924 by Alice Kerr-Sutherland but first published in 1991.
It has some genuinely fascinating stuff to say about gender, and I feel like it's worth looking at/thinking about in the context of Historical Gender Stuff. This 100 year old book has the following to say:
"The truth is that some young gentlemen would rather they had been born young ladies: they cannot admit this openly, because in the male world to confess as much would lead to instant ostracism if not worse; but they cannot conceal it either, and by preferring the company of girls, and soft, feminine clothing, and by flinching during the rough pursuits to which all boys, willing or no, are occasionally heirs, they attract opprobrium."
"Such boys weep too readily for their fellows' tastes - weeping is a great crime among boys unless it is generally admitted that circumstances left little choice - and are hounded for that reason."
"Just as there are girls who had rather been boys - we all know examples of the type - there are boys who, in a kinder world, would have been born into the gender more suited to their dispositions."
"Many young people of this sort are riven with a guilt they do not deserve but have been forced, by the conventions of society, to adopt; they are confused, ashamed and thoroughly unhappy."
"The ideal thing to do would be to treat these cases on their merits, send them to girls' schools, and so on. (The same thing should happen with those girls who would rather be young gentlemen.) Boys of this sort are girls in any case-in all respects save one."
"Most subjects of this sort have a secret name - a girl's name."

I agree sometimes beloved characters need to die, but I think if you kill someone it should be for an actual storytelling purpose, not the stupid BS televised media showrunner "the audience must NEVER KNOW what lurks around the next corner!!" shit. The author's cheating at the game if they just straight-up change the plot not because it's not working, but because they think someone might guess where they're going. There's none of the delight that happens when something is genuinely well crafted enough to surprise, or when the characters to be so beloved and resonate so much that the audience is willing to snatch at any thin branch of hope rather than acknowledge what's Clearly Going To Happen. It's obvious in the text when someone cheats, and it takes the fun and investment out of it.
The thing about those shows where anyone can die at any time, people stop getting invested enough in any characters to actually get a reaction when it happens. It just becomes "meh, wonder who's gonna die on the dragon show this week. Or, I could watch the next season of Is It Cake...hmm. equal potential for actual audience surprise, it's all arbitrary based on production focus groups, one has more chocolate and one has more attractive people committing war crimes, what am I in the mood for?"

EVERGREEN.
also, familiarize yourself with the laws in YOUR state surrounding protests, there are small but vital differences about permits, public versus private property and things like that that will make a difference in whether you are at lower or higher risk of being charged with a crime simply by being present. Search "ACLU protest (your state) and they all have a list of helpful guidelines of protestors' rights in that state, most of their pages include helpful PDFs to print hard copy for people who don't want to risk bringing a phone and a telephone number for the state branch of the National Lawyer's Guild or other legal aid options. For example, this is the one for Minnesota.
in light of police across the country cracking down on pro palestine protests with brutal force, it feels like a great time to remind everyone to shut the fuck up around cops. don't make small talk, dont act friendly, don't fucking engage with them!! if you are arrested DO NOT speak without a lawyer present. protest organizers, get into contact with local pro bono lawyers who can be there for your arrested comrades. no matter what, if cops are there, shut the fuck up unless you are actively doing a protest chant. dont tell cops why you were there, dont tell them if you're affiliated with the school you may be protesting at, dont tell them if you came there with anyone, dont tell them anything!!!

In my soul and spirit I'm rejoicing with the 911 kiddos for their good fortune, but the true vector for spreading fannish enthusiasm on Tumblr is the gifset, and all the 911 gifsets seem to be of 2-3 absolutely identical dudes, so it's all very confusing. I don't know which one Buck is, but I guess he's going on dates with a guy who isn't the other main guy? I actually thought there were gays already, but what I'm learning is that those are the gays from a different show which is also 911, a show I was not even aware had a cinematic universe. Anyway I believe in my heart that all of this would feel less confusing to me if it were happening on a space ship, but people who watch procedurals deserve happiness and I'm not afraid to say it. God bless you and your 2-5 sturdy, indistinguishable white men.
