Last week, randomly and completely out of the blue, I remembered Good Omens and Crowley and Aziraphale and I grinned from ear to ear.

Also I might be just about to start reading Good Omens, which has been sitting on my shelf for months and my hands tremble with anticipation.

Warlock grows up in a family where his parents are mostly absent and when his father is around, he’s constantly trying to impart all sorts of toxic masculine nonsense on the poor kid.

Enter Nanny Ashtoreth and Brother Francis. They’re different in a way that Warlock knows his parents, and his dad especially, wouldn’t like if they knew. 

Brother Francis encourages him to love all things, no matter what. Including himself. Including the two men down the street that his dad calls f*gs and says to stay away from. The gardener teaches the boy that love is nothing to be afraid of, and that love will bring great things for yourself and those around you. Nanny Ashtoreth, meanwhile, takes a more direct approach. She tells Warlock that he should murder everything in his path, sure, but when he asks about make-up, she asks if he’d like to try, and then spends a whole hour gently applying it to his face and doing his nails. The finished look is positively demonic, the color scheme red and black that makes him feel beautiful and powerful. Later on, when she catches him trying on her heels one day, she returns the next day with a pair in his size. His dress-up chest, locked with a key that stays in Nanny’s possession, has clothing for all genders in it, and he gets to choose what he wants to wear and when. They leave, and with Nanny goes the dress-up chest and her make-up collection. Warlock goes to a relatively conservative school, takes up sports at his father insistence, and is immersed in a culture of masculinity unlike any he’s ever experienced before. It’s eat or be eaten, and he has to adjust if he wants to survive.

When he’s grown-up, off to university and finally experiencing a culture that’s more diverse and welcoming, Warlock learns all about different genders and sexualities and remembers his Nanny and the gardener. As he reaches adulthood, he has a ton of incredible stories about them, but the thing that really sticks with him, that he learned from both of them more consistently than any of their other messages, was to be himself and love himself and celebrate whoever he is. And also how to do some killer eye shadow designs, but that was secondary, of course.

I feel so stupid. I just realized why Warlock didn’t give a flying fig about dinosaurs and called them “dumbasaurs.” Of course Nanny Crowley told him the truth about how there was no such thing and they were just a practical joke on the palaeontologists. That took me way too long.
