Rewatching Dirk Gently from the beginning and thinking about him saying “You will investigate, even if you don’t mean to, and you will be compensated, even if you haven’t technically earned it.” And how that’s so telling of the way that his powers work. He genuinely doesn’t mean to investigate and, if we think of all the blackwing subjects as tools, I don’t even think investigation is his main function. I think he’s there to locate problems in reality but he lacks the ability to solve the problems on his own, which leads him to feel that the compensation he receives isn’t actually earned. What I’m getting at here is that Dirk is such a good, kind, and caring person that he just can’t help but try to save the day even when it isn’t his job.
