i frequently think about laertes and his “the woman will be out” line regarding his tears and his grief over his ophelia death. in terms of the effects of the patriarchy in hamlet, we often discuss the obvious cases of ophelia, gertrude, and even hamlet. but laertes is also shown to be impacted by these rigid standards, namely those of masculinity. patriarchal ideals were particularly adamantly enforced during this time. any sort of portrayed grief is regarded as “feminine” as men are to remain “stoic” under any circumstances, therefore laertes admittedly feels shame towards mourning his own sister. which is so sad as he quickly recomposes himself and does not permit himself to properly grieve after hearing such news.
