Four-week intensive workshop: Dive deep in poetry comics

🗓️ Thursdays: 1/11, 1/18, 1/25, 2/1 5:00–7:00PM PT • Online • $100

In this four-session intensive course, students will explore the work of poetry cartoonists throughout time, create in different styles, explore finding their own voices, and complete a minicomic by the end of the course.

This will be a small and interactive course, capped at 10 students. Each session is two hours.

Book news! I am so excited for this book to be in the world and in your hands. Coming Spring 2025.

There are a handful of things I’ve been trying to explore since 2017 that never felt quite complete, and this book feels like the most solid offering of what I’ve been trying to say: about despair and terror and world-rending grief, about solidarity, about the hope that God has not abandoned us, about the quiet hum of the sacred at the heart of everything.

I’m planning some cool things around the book launch, and I always share to my newsletter first (link to subscribe).

The process of finishing and pitching this book was interesting and complicated, and I learned a lot. I think there’s lots that might be helpful for other cartoonists who are starting out — if you make comics and want to talk through what I’ve learned about finishing and pitching a book-length comic, email me before January 1st to find time for a short zoom (madeleinecomics [at] gmail [dot] com).

One of my favorite quotes is from a speech delivered by Frederick Douglass on August 3, 1857 on “West India Emancipation” at Canandaigua, New York.

The full quote that I find so inspirational and which I believe elevates the need for organization among oppressed peoples is:

“Power concedes nothing without a demand. It never did and it never will. Find out just what any people will quietly submit to and you have found out the exact measure of injustice and wrong which will be imposed upon them, and these will continue till they are resisted with either words or blows, or with both. The limits of tyrants are prescribed by the endurance of those whom they oppress.”
