This is a lecture basic course, but I learn more than I expected. Mass Communication work ethics-- stereotype and sex in ads are the easy way out for advertisers, there are many inspirations.

Sound in motion picture-- is object in film, nats sounds are important as shots/ narration.
The Jazz Singer,1927-- the first film ever has sound
Digital Theater Systems (DTS): Jurassic Park, 1993-- change the sound film for ever, audience felt like around the scene.
ADR-- actors go back to the studio to read and record the line.
Foley-- a term that describes the process of live recording of sound effects that are created by a Foley artist. Jack Foley in 1950s.

Visual Story Editing
Film needs beginning, middle, and end.
Straight-cut is the normal and most reasonable rhythmic transitional device. Use fade-out, fade-in, dissolve, wipe, flip frame, or jump out only for purpose and create interesting affect.
Axis of Action (180 Degree Rule)-- states that two characters in the same scene should always have the same lift/right relationship to each other.
Everything happens/ apply for reason. Do not use it because you just like it.

Editing the Visual Story
Editing is coordination of one shot with another in order to create a coherent whole. It is a process of preparing language, images, or send through correction, condensation and organization.
Four main functions:
make sure that the production is the required length or time. (because the film industry/ cinema wants the film within 1hr 40min range-- more profitable)
remove unwanted material or mistake
to alter if necessary the way or the sequence in which event will be portrayed.
to establish the particular style and character of a production
Five areas (graphic, rhythmic, temporal, spatial, thematic relations) of choices and control in editing, based on five types of relationships between shots.
Think of audience when editing, surprise them in the end.

Great journalist, Boyd Huppert. Glad Texas State has opportunity to invite awesome mass communication professional as guest speaker.
Avoid using cliche words or inserting music to describe certain event, story, etc. Instead, providing visual images, quotes, in order to let audience to feel the emotion and connection.
The father in the news is a common person, just like us. Parents- child love is universal theme, tab on it, focus on it.
Place the driver's clip at the end of the news, because viewer has right to know and the right not to know until it is the right moment.
Concept, emotion, character are the central focus of the story.

Basic visual components
Space-- deep space: illusion of 3D world on a 2D screen surface. Deep cues(line, lighting, size, texture, etc) help create the depth.
-- limited space: specific combination of deep and flat space, lead audience pay attention to actor and the dialog of the plot.
-- ambiguous space: viewer unable to understand the actual size or spatial relationship of the objects in the picture, means to confuse audience.
-- surface divisions: emphasize similarities and differences between objects, ask audience to compare and contrast, help direct eye to specific area of the frame.
Tone has nothing to do with color. Tone refers to the brightness of objects in relation to the gray scale, important factor in black, white, and color.

Contrast-- difference; Affinity-- similarity.
The greater the contrast in a visual component, the more the visual intensity or dynamic increase; the greater the affinity in a visual component, the more the visual intensity or dynamic decrease.
Contrast equals greater visual intensity; Affinity equals less visual intensity. The more intense the visual stimulus, the more intense the audience reacts.
Basic visual components: space, line, shape, tone, color, movement, and rhythm.

George Eastman introduced flexible, 1st box camera.
Depth of field-- amount of distance between the nearest and farthest objects that appear in acceptably sharp focus in a photo. More shallow- background out of focus/ deeper- everything clear.
Aperture-- exposure of light, bright/ dark. Wider aperture- smaller number- more light- lower depth of field; smaller aperture- bigger number- less light- higher DOP.
Shutter speed-- faster- less light- more freeze motion; slower- more light- more blurry.
ISO-- sensitivity to light-- bigger number- more sensitivity- lower quality.
Three basic types of lens-- wide angle (<50mm); Normal (=50mm); telephoto (>50mm).
Macro lens-- used in close, get close to object

Hanna and Barbera's "The Flintstones" cast until beat by "Simpson" .
John Lasseter's "Toy Story & Monster, Inc" was 1st total computer built film.
