The end for now. From the 22nd of June 2020 this page will no longer post.
I am sorry to say to all of the people who have been following this blog that. I have come to the decision to put this blog on ice/ deactivate but still keep it alive.
By this I mean I will no longer be posting to this page and i am sorry for those who will be affected by this. It’s not a decision which has come lightly but i think it is best for me to do this as I have become unhappy with the posts i was putting up due to lack of quality and effort on my own part and that shows a lack of professionalism which I always strive to have.
I will still be available for people to message me, I just don’t know how often I will check the messages.
Anyway best wishes to the people who have helped me on my journey on here and hears to new beginnings.
Best,
Lewis.

Dark Academia Books for Students of Politics and International Relations:
I mean, heck, I am no expert but my need to see this niche ass post is a lot so here goes.
The Prince: Machiavelli- do I NEED to explain this one. Its a seminal text in politics and political philosophy and when you listen to the ideas described in it they can sound a little crazy but once you read it you realise they are still crazy but grounded in something very real. Also its short as heck and an easy read.
Politics among Nations: The Struggle for Power and Peace- Hans J Morgenthau. I had to pick this one up for my coursework last semester and I thought it would be a snooze fest but no. I was drawn in and I haven’t finished it since but I do plan to get back to it at my leisure.
The End of History and the Last Man: Francis Fukuyama- YES, I fundamentally disagree with Fukuyama on so many points. YES, it is still one of my favourite books of all time. it is a very riveting discussion of political philosophy, history and international relations. If you are interested in any of those topics, pick it up. You won’t regret it.
How Democracy Ends: David Runciman- captivatingly written, great arguments, and a very unique voice. Super relevant in today’s international political atmosphere and if you are interested in studying the rise of right wing authoritarian governments across the globe, this is a great place to start.
Thomas Hobbes: Leviathan- another one that I just feel like i don’t need to explain. Again haven’t read it fully yet, but its quite chill inducing and the basis for most of the contemporary discussion on state, liberalism, authoritarianism, rights and so forth.
These were just my recommendations, and I by no means claim that they cover the entire gamut of the field. In fact, I would consider myself a noob still where texts relating to politics or IR are concerned, so feel free to give your recommendations and opinions as well!

Something different, something new!
Having watched a series on Netflix called Queen Victoria and her Nine Children. the media coverage of Princess Louise and John Campbell was very proud of the fact that this was one of the first royal marriages in sometime between two who lived in the british isles. This broke the tradition of royals marrying to those in other royal circles. The included Punch Cartoon dictates this as a defeat for that established order. I hope this is something you all enjoy. Best wishes. Lewis.

Crossword fun
Most papers include a section typically dedicated to a set of Puzzles which the reader can solve and then find the solution out in the next day edition of the paper. I therefore present you The Crossword for the edition of the Daily Herald Tuesday 9th August 1932. Lets see if any of my fellow history nerds can solve this without cheating ;)

Chartist newspapers and the importance of media for protests
The Northern Star (1837- 1852) was one of the most famous Chartist Newspapers and was a follow up to the Poor man’s Guardian which was produced (1831-1835). It was owned by Fergus O’connor a radical Mp who thought for the Chartist ideology under the People’s charter of 1838.  The Paper was a weekly broadsheet which allowed for chartist ideology to become more mainstream.
Anyway below is an image of how the paper looked and what the working classes would have seen.

What we can appreciate from this image is that despite the fact sections are missing, we still have a copy of what I can presume is the first issue of the Northern Star and Leeds General Advertiser  -  6th January 1838.
Yes I have a fascination for the Chartist movement :)
