Those nights when Kaz wakes up and rolls over and reaches for Inej but she's not there and that old panic fills him because he lost her once, twice, and it's a wound that doesn't heal so he bolts up her name on his lips but then he sees her perched in the window washed in moonlight gazing out toward the glittering black sea and this sort of insurmountable peace crashes over him and when he goes to her and wraps his arms around her waist just so he can be close to her and she tilts her head back and they share this look and they watch the waves lap at the shore together and when she whispers to him that she's leaving in the morning, that the ocean is calling, that old restlessness is nagging at her, urging her to go, to help where she can and even though he could stand here in this moment forever holding her tight staring at the sky and sea and their blissful harmony he knows he can't be the thing that holds her down because he loves enough to let her go and trusts her enough to come back so he makes a murmur of affirmation and even though he agrees he holds on just a little tighter

Kaz regarded her the way he might a treacherous adversary. To love her was to breathe. To desire her? That was to drown with nary a drop of water in sight.

If you asked Kaz Brekker what home smelled like, perhaps once upon a time he would've given a vague description of the place he and Jordie grew up, a memory so distant even Kaz himself had stopped being able to conceptualize it years ago.
Now, he could answer you with confidence. If you asked Kaz Brekker what home smelled like, his lips would subtly twitch- easily mistakenly as a sense of smugness- and he would tell you, olive oil and smoke. He smells Suli tea and spices, he thinks of her.
When Kaz Brekker thinks of home, he thinks of how perfect she looks when she comes down the stairs of the slat, picking apart her breakfast and licking her fingers clean with the satisfaction that her stomach was full and a man somewhere was dead.
He found he liked that look on her; dangerous, satisfied- content and free.
Her slender fingers gripped her knives with the elegance of matches next to altar candles on the cathedral that was her frame, her scarf akin to draping curtains that fell around her eyes- her irises catching the light like stained glass windows.
His Wraith was silent, and Kaz Brekker, the man who hated to ever be taken off guard, loved her for every time she appeared in his life without warning.
Kaz Brekker could tell you in an instant what he thinks of when he thinks of home, and only need two words: Inej Ghafa.

The "Wylan should learn how to read" thing irks me because a huge part of his arc was learning to accept that this was just something that he couldn't do, and that it can't be fixed and that he shouldn't live in shame over it.
Wylan just can't read. Van Eck tried everything. And true, at one point it would get stressful but Van Eck was a kind father at first. It's not about getting a new teacher, it's just something Wylan can't do.
A big part of his growth was learning to accept that. And Kaz is a big part of this.
Kaz is the first person not to scorn Wylan for his dyslexia. Kaz is the first person to just genuinely not care.
Kaz was the one that told Wylan that his weakness was never his disability but his shame surrounding it. He normalised the disability for Wylan, made it a small deal. It's still a part of Wylan, but not as life shattering as his father had always made it out to be.
It can be inconvenient (taking double the time to read the papers at Smeet's office) but it can be worked around. In fact, I believe taking Wylan to Smeets office was for Wylan's benefit. "I knew how long this was going to take" - dismissing Wylan's shame that Wylan is slowing him down. Reassuring him, in his own way, that it's okay. That it's not that big of a deal. It's not even really a problem.
"I didn't hire you to read." Wylan doesn't need to have the ability to read to get on well in life, despite Van Eck's opinions, and Kaz decides to show Wylan that. He decides so because that's what people said about his limp. That a disabled boy with a bad leg will die in the Barrel.
Kaz could get a healer for his leg, hell, Genya offered. But he declined. Why? Because he refuses to be ashamed. Because this is what he is and he won't change that. "It had become a declaration. There was no part of him that was not broken, that had not healed wrong, and there was no part of him that was not stronger for having been broken."
He becomes a boy to be dreaded despite the limp, no, with it. His cane is his weapon. It's not a weakness, it's also a strength. It's not fear the boy despite the limp it's fear the boy with the limp.
And I believe Kaz was truly one of the most important people in Wylan's life because he did that. He showed Wylan not to be ashamed. That he can be powerful not despite the disability, but with it. That what Wylan can do is more important than what he can't and I don't think Wylan will ever forget that.

Most of the other women in fiction when the love interest is a bad man: its okay, i can fix him. Ill change him <3
Inej Ghafa: no one can change this mf. If he loves me, he'll change himself

The thing I love most about Kaz and Inejs relationship is how they know their worth. Inej knows her worth. She loves Kaz, but she will not offer herself to him without him returning it. She knows he cares for her, but she also knows he won’t touch her. And she’s fine with it, but if he can’t tell her why, then she can’t be with him. “I will have you without your armor, or I won’t have you at all” or smth like that. And Kaz. He knows, or should I say rather, he thinks, he’s not good enough for Inej. But instead of going, oh well I suck I’ll never be good enough for her tough luck I’ll just let her go, or saying I’ll still be with her, she loves me she’ll stay, he says I know I don’t deserve her now, or maybe ever, but I will work. I will fight for this relationship, for our love. I will better myself so that I can be deserving of her.
And I just love that for them.

One thing about Kaz is that instead of thinking "I don't deserve her" he went "I will work on myself to deserve her" Bro is a simp, not a quitter.

Kaz, clearly angry: I AM IN A BAD MOOD! So NOBODY TALK TO ME!!
Inej, pouting: Even me?
Kaz, confused: What? No. Obviously, YOU can talk to me.
Kaz, angry again: BUT NOBODY ELSE! I MEAN IT! LEAVE ME ALONE!
Kaz, softly to Inej: To reiterate, this does not apply to you.

concept: slavers or enemy pirates kidsnap kaz and intend to use him as leverage against inej. of course they took precautions but even then, when kaz isn't fighting back and just sits there with a small smirk on his face, they're all convinced dirtyhands is plotting his escape.
in reality though, he is in fact thinking "oooh when my wife gets here you guys are so screwed"

I know for a fact that when Inej does something, literally anything Kaz would say “That’s my girl” either to himself in his mind or silently.
Now imagine when they start being more comfortable with each other and opening up more sjxjejx
