A french idiom I learned today!

‘Avoir un vent’- literally: to have wind, which means to say something to someone and get no reply. For example, one may say ‘à demain!’ to one’s friends, and receive no reply. They will go home feeling sad, but at least will have a cool french idiom to express their outrage.

what are some of the best ways to learn a new language when you can't do it with an actual class or teacher?

Hey :) you can use duolingo of course for the basics, but the grammar isn’t really explained, so you can also look up the grammar online. For french I like https://www.francaisfacile.com/ . Here you can also test your knowledge. To learn more vocabulary you can use memrise where you can choose different topics. Also it’s useful to read news articles and then learn the words that you don’t know.https://www.newsinslowfrench.com/ On this website you can listen to french news, but a bit slower than the normal news. This way you get accustomed to listening to french. In general, I would also recommend buying a grammar book. For me it’s always easier to work through a book. But that’s just my personal preference. I had quickly mentioned prépositions in a post about grammar but that’s clearly not enough : there is an endless list of words you need to learn to be able to either read of speak french fluently and it’s time for us to talk about that. get some pop corn or something, it might take a while.

main bits :

- and : et / or : ou (NB : où = where) / but : mais

- with : avec / without : sans

- if : si (click) / then : puis, alors, ensuite

- more : plus (”plusse” or “plu” depending on the context), ex : he’s taller now = il est “plu” grand maintenant but I want more = j’en veux “pluss” / less : moins

- no more : plus (”plu”), ex : there is no more chocolate in the house = il n’y a “plu” de chocolat dans la maison

- how : comment / who : qui / what : quoi  / why : pourquoi 

where #1 :

- in : dans / out : hors (de), ex : “I’m out of myself” = je suis hors de moi (v v pissed) / in front : devant / behind : derrière

Dear people learning French, be aware of this

Your accent is more than fine, you don’t need to have a Parisian accent to be a legit francophone. French is spoken by 542 millions of people in 30 different countries, and I don’t even know how many different French dialects may exist… French language is multicultural, and you are part of this big community. 

You are a legit francophone even if you make some mistakes. Guess what, I make mistakes too, I check grammar online too, like everybody. French IS complex and French rules are HELL to us, native speakers, too. Seriously, I feel your pain. 

It’s okay if you started learning French a while ago, stopped, and then want to get back to it but don’t really know how to do it. You don’t have to apologize. You are not betraying anyone for stopping for a moment, a week, a month, a year… It’s totally okay. We all have ups and downs and you will find motivation in due time.  It’s okay if you read French well, write French well but struggle to speak. It takes time to get confidence and speak up. It will come some day, believe me. I learned English just like you are learning French, I had trouble speaking too. Hell, I was impressed by native speakers and lost all my words! You will get confidence as your knowledge will grow, you’ll get more practice and it’s going to be easier for you. Trust me, been there, done that, it’s legit. 

Don’t forget that French is awesome and you are awesome for learning it!

some french idioms 🍓

Faire l’andouille (to make the sausage) =To do something ridiculous.

Les doigts dans le nez (the fingers in the nose) = When something is easy for you, you do it “fingers in the nose”.

Poser un lapin (to put a rabbit) = To stand someone up.

Avoir un poil dans la main (to have a hair in the hand) = To be lazy.

Ne pas être sorti de l’auberge (to not be out of the inn) = To face a complicated problem. 

Avoir le cafard (to have the cockroach) = To be depressed

Chercher la petite bête (to look for the little beast) = To always look for something to complain about insignificant details. 

Donner un coup de main (to give a knock of hand) = To give a helping hand.

Il y a quelque chose qui cloche (there is something ringing) = There is something wrong. 

Faire un froid de canard (to do a cold of duck) = To be extremely cold. In winter, when it’s very cold, ducks go away from lakes and are therefore exposed to hunters. So “un froid de canard” is an extremely cold and hostile weather.

Donner sa langue au chat (to give one’s tongue to the cat) = I have no idea/I give up.This expression is used to say you don’t know about something and are unable to give an answer.

Avoir une peur bleue (to have a blue fear) =To be terrified.

Ah, la vache (Oh the cow) =Oh my god.

Avoir un chat dans la gorge (To have a cat in the throat) = This is the counterpart of the English expression “to have a frog in one’s throat”(to have lots of phlegm)

S’occuper de ses oignons (to take care of one’s onions) =To mind one’s own business.

En avoir ras le bol (To have a bowl full of it) =To be fed up with something

Avoir la flemme = To have a lack of desire to do something or go somewhere, to be lazy. 

Être bien dans sa peau (to be good in one’s skin) = To feel comfortable with your body and who you are. 

Faire la tête (make the head) = When you are not happy about something and decide to sulk as a result.

Tomber dans les pommes (To fall in the apples) = To faint

Être au taquet = When something is blocking you, but in a positive way, meaning that you could not be in a better situation.

Être sur son 31 (To be on your 31) = To be on your 31 means that you are wearing your most beautiful clothes, that you are elegant.

Mettre son grain de sel (To put one’s grain of salt) = When people who join a conversation or do something without being invited to do so.

Avoir les yeux plus gros que le ventre (“have eyes bigger than your belly) = When you want to eat more than you can.
