I do a lot of stuff at the temple with my OCs, so I figured it'd be fun to start making a couple FREAKS to inhabit that place with, so I have more personalised horrors to subject lil guys to... ALSO because it's fun to just write an absolute piece of shit. That too.

Lawrence's deal is that on the surface, he's a kind person that you are Safe around. Initiates like him, he sometimes does some tutoring when he's not busy with his other work, he'll even help initiates out of Sticky Situations with other members of the temple! He's a nice, sleepy man that looks after scrolls and books! However, under that, he is just as disgusting as most of the others. He just targets people he considers too oblivious/pure/otherwise innocent to Realise what he's doing (I think gameplay-wise as an NPC, he'd target players with high purity or low awareness) ,,, BASICALLY he's a pathetic little man that needs so so so badly to be liked, so he doesn't want to be caught, but. Not badly enough to just not molest people.

Catherine meanwhile is Openly Terrifying! Her job basically involves various forms of purification, including Exorcisms and Punishing People Who Break Their Vows. Also looking after the temple-sanctioned weaponry. I think people avoid her, because she's kind of giving off constant bad vibes lmao. Thinks a lil highly of herself. She is Pure and Moral and Better Than Other People. She is also stubborn in this belief! So when she starts having lustful thoughts about people, obviously she can't be to blame for that! It just means whoever that is, they are Evil and Tempting Her! Better vent her sadistic tendencies onto them about it. Weirdly, when she does snap and do a rape and get what she actually wants though, she tends to change her tune and start babbling weird praise at her victim out of seemingly nowhere. Essentially, she is SOOOO gross and pathetic. I think as an in-game NPC, she'd react to your allure, but she'd have different flavour text depending on your Grace and Purity. Also might torture some demons...

the game mech for being brought to the hospital from excess stress should automatically add a passive stockholm point for doctor harper every time it happens. imagine seeing the doctor first thing with a substantial fatigue and stress reduction after passing out from being overwhelmed at least thrice a month, especially at Night and being allowed to stay until morning. i know I would go through something akin to filial imprinting.

im thinking about sydney and harper's relationship and how its been outright confirmed by purityguy that syd stayed at the asylum at some point, which is the reason they're so "pure" at first meeting while missing quite a bit of their memories

sydney also knows harper, it's safe to assume this is from the asylum times, but we don't know the extent of what happened between them.

and i want to assume it's because of harper doing their ... harpering, but also: how long ago was this exactly? because ultimately.. harper isn't that much older than the pc, and by extension, sydney.

paired with this line you can hear from a patient in the asylum, (that i cba to hunt down in the game itself,)

what exactly got harper sent to the asylum in the first place and how long ago was that? was harper always like that, or was it a gradual change, a weird evolution of sorts from being in the asylum for so long? how old was harper when they transitioned from a patient to a doctor? was harper still just a regular patient when sydney was admitted? were they already a doctor by then?

there's so many variables, which leaves so much room for theories!! and i love cooking my own food!! me personally?? i like the idea that harper wasn't quite a 'proper doctor' yet when sydney was admitted.

darling sydney, freshly traumatized from the loss of their parent, and from potentially having witnessed the rite being performed on kylar's parents.

harper, still a patient, probably around 18 years old or so, maybe a bit older? practicing and perfecting his hypnosis on other patients, including sydney. simple things like.. memory alteration. real convenient!

eventually, that skill lets harper to take up the role of a totally legitimate and licensed doctor. the doctors and nurses who took care of him are now his assistants. they always had been. and those who only knew him as a fellow patient... well, they can simply go ahead and forget about that entirely, can't they?

because I haven't seen a lot of discussion about a couple of the more hidden aspects of sydney's backstory, i wanted to talk about it. read more under the cut!

first, there's the whole thing about sydney and harper. given their interactions, it's probably safe to assume that sydney's been on the receiving end of harper's "treatments." the implications of this are really interesting, and i think this could potentially explain some of sydney's weird behavior.

so, when the PC is treated by harper, harper's hypnosis causes the PC to go into a trance act on sexual impulses against their will. and this seems... kinda similar to sydney's prayer room outbursts imo:

but I also think that when sydney was treated by harper, it was probably at the asylum. this is for a couple reasons. for one, sydney realizes what's going on as soon as harper starts preparing to send the PC to the asylum:

but beyond that, there's some interesting dialogue you can get during ivory wraith encounters.

the line "I was (their) only friend, in that dark place beyond the trees" refers specifically to sydney (the pronouns will change depending on what sydney's gender is set as). and, well, the asylum's in the middle of the woods, so....

and the wraith's line "you think you can trust (them). That's hilarious, but no one's laughing." also refers to sydney btw, so make of that what you will!
