Roman Torchwick, unlucky from birth, chronically fucked-over by life, and only ever able to think in pictures, had never been surprised by the fact that he didn't have someone like that, had only ever wanted to depend on himself, anyway -

Can't wait to do this again next October!

As a child, Roman Torchwick saw Halloween as a celebration of wealth and extravagance - it was a reminder that he would never be safe enough to have those things or trust others with his fears and vulnerability. But Neo had seen it as an escape, a way to pretend to be something other than what she was (other than the shameful creature her parents told her she was). But she never got to have that escape, and every year, she chafed under their control.
Nowadays, though, Roman and Neo have each other, and Halloween has come to mean something quite different.

Cinder has never seen inside her newest henchman's room, for the door is always closed and locked. But, when Neo leaves the door open one night, Cinder finally sees what the girl has been hiding…
…and the only thing more disturbing than the shrine to Roman Torchwick that Neo has turned the room into (photos on the walls and dresser, some knit doll of him tucked in her arms, his hat and the replica of his scarf set on a pedestal in the corner) is the fact that the man sitting on the edge of Neo's bed, back to the door, is Roman Torchwick.

Roman Torchwick, ever the opportunistic thief, breaks into a presumably impenetrable tower to steal the treasures within. The tower being removed from the main mansion - and Roman having the ability to store stolen goods in a dimension of his own - makes him suspect he won't be discovered until he's long since done looting it. And so, Roman scales the walls and makes his way inside. He expects gold, jewels, a rare tapestry or two ...
The game systems and toys throw him for a loop.
But it's the woman sleeping there, curled beneath a blanket, that is truly the last thing Roman expects to find.

Fic Title: life goes on, it gets so heavy (the wheel breaks the butterfly) (x)
Rating: M (for non-sexual intimacy and some heavier emotional themes)
With Neo asleep in his lap, Roman nestles into the sofa, grabbing the remote, lowering the volume, and flicking through channels to see what the night owls of Vale consider entertainment (or, at least, the night owls of Vale who, like him, don't pay for cable and just use whatever default channel set their flat comes with).
There's the horror movie that had put Neo to sleep, an action movie, a Pumpkin Petes commercial, infomercials, raunchy comedies, the news - he's about to give up and return to Neo's evidently boring slasher when he lands on a cartoon whose animation style couldn't more clearly be aimed at children. That gets him smirking - whose brat is gonna be up at 3am watching fairy tales?
He goes to flip channels again - and then his finger freezes, his eyes widening as the voice of the narrator hits him.

"You know, once Neo realized where she was, everything changed. Always loved the idea of a place to get away from it all. Do whatever you want! I offered that to her back on Remnant." The illusory Torchwick, once speaking so fondly, darkens his tone, the other illusions around him all growing somber, angry expressions, too. "But we all remember how that ended..."
And Ruby thinks she has every right to lose it, to snap, because what the hell, what the hell, Neopolitan has been working with Cinder and trying to kill her just for this guy?! Is that seriously the problem here?!
...And then she thinks of that portrait of Roman and Neo, and the expressions on their faces, and the way Roman had screamed for Neo and lost control of his emotions in the minutes leading up to his death, and she thinks maybe, just maybe, the thieves went deeper than just a crime boss and his henchman. That Roman's rage in his final moments wasn't solely motivated by Ruby routing him.
And so, in a split-second decision, she chooses another tactic: "I see," she says, softly. "That's what this is all about, then. You blame me for what happened to Torchwick."

"It's funny," he mumbles, nursing a cup of lavender tea Neo had prepared to soothe his headaches. "Who'd have thought we'd ever settle down like this?"
Neo reaches across the table and closes her hand lightly over his. You'll be back on your feet again soon, her soft look reads. This is just a temporary setback.
"And if it's more permanent?" he asks. "If our old life is entirely out of our reach, now…will you stay?"
The question throws her. Why would I leave?
"You want to," he says, and when she shakes her head in vehement protest, he clarifies: "Not leave the relationship, pet. Leave this place. You want revenge for what happened to me."
