its so sad kabru had to get caught in his lie so fast bc it truly distracts ppl from how sweet and cute it is that laios went out of his way to make him something special that he thought he'd enjoy like rolled omelette are not that easy to make and they were making food anyway he just decided "kabru is my friend and kabru likes eating monsters let me spare my special provisions to give him something, just for him" like we get so swept up in how kabru feels about it honestly that we do not see how much care the gesture was on laios' part. no wonder he gets so broken hearted about kabru not liking the food he made in particular. id be so so sad if i made my new friend a cake they said they liked and i found out it physically hurt to eat and they just ate it anyway to spare my feelings. and they never liked cake. like no tell meeeee i made it special for youuuuu

"Like an old friend calling my name."
I really liked this quote from MFN, you wouldn't expect it from this gruff guy surrounded by puppets. But here it is. And had to draw it.

Got to play a bit of MFN and I adore a grumpy man. So I made my own. Aimed for him to be mostly grey and stout with that tiny splash of color on his uniform.

Thank you for providing me an egg in this trying time.
(I am joking about it being a trying time, but I am very tired.)

Remember those really popular 'Henry saves everyone' BATIM AUs that were really popular back in the day? I found a game that literally does that as a true ending.
My Friendly Neighbourhood has a true ending where the protagonist Gordon restores sanity to all the puppets, helps them out by giving them back their eyes/ giving them food/ fixing their piano/ watching a movie with them etc, and at the end they reboot the show and live happily ever after. I was watching a bunch of the cutscenes today and the voice acting is great! I have no idea why it didn't reach the popularity BATIM did.
Oh yeah, I know this one! It's such a good game! I wish it was more popular too.
The thing I kept going back to with my friends is that it just feels like it has so much heart. It's such a sweet and optimistic game and I really loved it for that.
I just loved watching Gordon show vulnerability and care towards these puppets. And I really loved that the puppets aren't really evil, either! They're just overexcited and confused.
There's no huge murder conspiracy or dark background for why the puppets are alive, either. They just are.
It's just such a hopeful and heartfelt game and I really love it.

Never underestimate the power of a hearty stew to make an adventure easier!
Surely Sam Gamgee and Senshi would be best friends if they ever met

Marcille makes me cry man, I never really cared for elves as a fantasy race but characterizing one as a person with the sole motivation to spend as much time as she can with the people she loves because she knows she'll outlive them is a heart wrenching masterpiece of an idea.

I love how Dungeon Meshi has so many heartfelt little group interactions that usually you’d only get from fanworks. Like what do you mean that “Chilchuck is good at braiding hair because he would braid his daughters’, so he braids Marcille’s hair when she’s too depressed to take care of it” isn’t from a fanfic??

i didnt post my Thoughts back then bc i wanted to let them marinade but when i was last reading dunmeshi i got to the part where the winged lion is trying to tempt laios and brings up his apathy and ”hatred” of humanity
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
and its so interesting to me bc from the way laios reacts its like…it cant be a complete lie right. a charitable and likely reading would maybe be that these are things that laios feels and has felt and thought rarely, only in his darkest moments like shown in the scene. but like he still HAS thought and felt them, undeniably, and i reeeally reaaally like that. because like laios is ALSO undeniably an incredibly kind and caring person, who despite it being difficult and painful for him does try to connect with the humanity around him.
like from the way he treats his friends, to his general kindness towards people he doesnt know or who could even be trouble to him, to things like refusing to hurt thistle even after all he did to him. and ofc what i know he goes on to do later in the manga.
like its fun to have a character whos apathetic and has misanthropic impulses (understandably maybe!) but who still at every opportunity tries his hardest to go against them. like to whom kindness and altruisim are an active choice every time. its realistic i think too since a lot if people i know also struggle with that, but you rarely see it portrayed like this outside of classical antihero characters etc etc let alone in like. mostly goofy weirdos who outwardly DONT show that struggle much. smile

Dungeon Meshi is the ultimate takedown of “there is no platonic explanation for this” off re: the level of love someone has
Both Marcille and Laios are willing to go to extreme lengths to bring Falin back to life. Laios is willing to walk into the dungeon alone and unaided to certain death for her; Marcille is willing to follow him and face everything she fears and hates for her. Marcille uses forbidden magic that would cost her life and her place in society to save Falin; Laios casts his lot in with her and brings the sentence upon his own head for the same reason. Laios plans to replace the dungeon lord make a deal with a demon to save Falin; Marcille is the one who actually strikes that deal.
One is sibling love and one is queer romantic love.
Neither is elevated above the other, and the choices and sacrifices along the way constantly echo each other. But the *flavor* of it, the nature of their affection, is written so differently. “There is no platonic explanation for this” is more for Marcille getting flustered at what she will be wearing when Falin is resurrected, than loving Falin more than ‘just a friend’ could. THAT is the way to differentiate something as romantic, rather than putting nonromantic love on some lower tier that could never reach the same heights or extremes.
