“I don’t know what’s scarier. The fact that everyone in this kingdom wants to run a sword through me, or that sometimes I just wanna let ‘em.”
Easily the most heartbreaking line in Nimona’s entire film. Captures all the pent up existential self loathing they are going through. Like, I shed some tears at it.

“Did you see the way that little girl looked at me? Kids. Little kids. They grow up believing that they can be a hero if they drive a sword into the heart of anything different. And I’m the monster? I don’t know what’s scarier. The fact that everyone in this kingdom wants to run a sword through my heart or that sometimes I just wanna let ‘em.” “We have to get you out of here. Over the wall. We won’t stop until we find some place safe, okay? We’ll go. Together. No matter what we do, we can’t change the way people see us.” “You changed the way you see me... Didn’t you?

A line I don’t think gets talked about enough:
“He didn’t cut off my arm. He was disarming a weapon. It’s how we were trained.”
The Institute took young kids and turned them into weapons. The Knights were trained to view themselves and their bodies as weapons.
Ambrosius cutting off Ballister’s arm was ingrained instinct. You can see in his face that he doesn’t realize what he’s doing until it’s too late, until the blade is already too far along in it’s swing. And after, he drops his sword like he didn’t realize how it got into his hand in the first place. He looks at Ballister with a dawning horror of what he’s just done, on instinct.
And then, the big fight. There’s a reason Ballister was top of the class. When fighting the guards he isn’t touched. In the middle of fighting Ambrosius, he cloths-lines a guard behind him WITHOUT EVEN LOOKING. Ambrosius doesn’t even look surprised that Ballister won, as if it’s normal, as if Ballister had always won their duels before.
I just. I have a lot of thoughts about this and I don’t have the words to express them. I just want other people to see what I see and talk about it too. To think about the implications of that line and how it’s delivered in a matter-of-fact way.

An interesting thing about how they handled revealing this... They only revealed it to us, the audience.

When Ballister apologized to Nimona and realized he was wrong for not trusting her, it's based on the time they spent together and he had genuinely grown to care for her. Like...

When confronting Nimona, he knew by that point that she hated being called a monster. Instead of waiting for her to try explaining herself, he gave in to Ambrosius' own conclusion that she was a monster even while he kept telling him "No, she's not" at the time. So, when he apologized to Nimona, he focused on the wrong thing he did. He didn't need to know the backstory to realize he was wrong.
With or without the backstory, he already cared a lot about her. And that's enough reason for him to apologize for hurting someone he loves.

I’ve seen people complain about Gwen saying to her dad “you’re a good cop” but I don’t think they understand what that scene actually means. Gwen’s dad is supposed to represent the “good cop”. It’s like Gwen says: he puts on that badge everyday so someone worse than him doesn’t. Pre Gwen’s reveal, he SEEMS like a good person, advocating for bringing peter’s killer to justice. But then he finds out, and in that moment, values the law over his teenage daughter. He even shows it in their reconciliation scene, even after not seeing his daughter for MONTHS, by arguing against Gwen being a vigilante despite the all the good shes done. When Gwen says “you’re a good cop,” she’s not saying “youre a good person” or “youre a good dad”. She’s saying “youre a BAD person. You’re a BAD dad. you value the law over my life, no matter what I do. You’re willing to sacrifice me for what you assume is the greater good, but it’s not even that.”
So he decides not be a good cop anymore.

Still thinking about the art during Gwen’s talks with her dad. It’s like. When he’s being a cop or they’re fighting the background is clear. But when they’re having a heart to heart it changes. It gets more abstract. The art styles of the characters change a little, too. Because it doesn’t matter. It doesn’t matter where they are or what they look like, Gwen loves her dad and he loves her. And the art shows that. They could be anywhere, anytime, and they love each other.
