Monthly Update – April 2024

The first Act of Remnants of The Past is officially complete! A heartfelt thank you to everyone who has purchased the game, as well as to those who will buy it in the future. Your overwhelming support means the world to me <3!

Now, onto planning Act 2! But before diving fully into that, I've been testing with a few things to enable you to import your choices from Act 1 into Act 2, and I'm thrilled to share some great news! Just this morning I found the way to do it! Huge thanks to Itch.io user necrosian for the suggestion, @13leaguestories for the help, and Chapel for the macros! In the next few days, I'll release an update so you can export your choices into a save file. However, this feature does NOT work on mobile. If you're playing on your phone, the export button won't do anything, but I've included a guide on how to manually carry over your choices to Act 2 on mobile. It might seem a bit tedious, but it only takes 2 minutes, and then you can forget about it for the rest of the Act.

In addition to that, I'm working on writing some extra scenes from the perspective of the ROs that didn't make it into the game. Whether it's because the MC wasn't present during those moments or they weren't necessary for the plot, these scenes are good details to share about the characters and give a bit of more context to their actions in the story. If you have a particular scene in mind that you'd like to see from another character's pov, feel free to ask! I'd be delighted to write it, as long as it doesn't venture into spoiler territory, of course! And on top of all that, I've been busy preparing some illustrations for Mermay! All of this and more will be available for Patreon subscribers.

With April and Act 1 done, I'm excited to dive into Act 2! Here's to hoping I'll make it to Chapter 1 soon!

The free week for the first act of Remnants of The Past has ended!

Starting today, you'll have the demo available, which covers up to Chapter 4, and purchasing options have been added both on Itch.io and Patreon.

For Itch.io, simply donate the specified amount and you'll have the files available for download. This is linked to your account, so you'll automatically have access to any future updates that may come.

In case you can't (or don't want to) purchase it through Itch.io, I've created a new tier on Patreon that will give you access to the post where you'll find the link to download the files, which also include the rewards of previous tiers. This link will take you to a Google Drive folder, so you'll need to sign in with your Google account if you haven't already. Why a Google Drive folder instead of a direct download link? For one simple reason, and it’s so you'll always have access to updates automatically, without needing to request a new download link and without me having to manually contact each of you to share them. Every time the folder is updated, you'll just need to refresh it and the updated files will appear.

Important note! The game is only available for PC/Mac and Android. I don't have any Apple devices to create an app for iOS. And one last thing to have in mind, I've spent the week trying to fix an issue with the APK, which is that the audio isn't working. I'll let you know if I find the solution, but for now, those who want to play it on mobile will have to do so without music. If anyone has any idea what the problem might be, I'd greatly appreciate the help! My knowledge of programming is very limited xD

We were always just lurkers… But no more! We were always just lurkers… But no more!

We had been talking for a while about the Interactive Fiction community, and wondering what we could to do… you know, do our part to help it become its best self.

And out of all the things available out there, between the directories and the group chats, the forums and the discord servers… it can get pretty overwhelming to be part of it all, to keep track of everything. And we realised there wasn't really a newsletter for IF. Something that tracks of what is happening…

~ CONFERENCE ~

You can now register for the Narrascope! It is happening June 21-23, in hybrid. They've also released the schedule of talks!

The Interactive Narrative Exhibition is looking for IF pieces to be displayed in a Museum in Poland!

Until mid-May, the Spring Thing is welcoming players to check out the entries vote for the “Best in Show”!

Do you speak German? The annual Grand Prix has released its submissions and is looking for voters!

The Dialogue Jam by the @neointeractives group is open for submission until the end of the month. Only Dialogue is allowed!

In less than two weeks, the window to submit for the Text Adventure Literacy Jam 2024 will end. The goal is to make a parser for beginner players.

Also ending at the end of the month is the Amare Games Festival 2024, which is all about love!

On the Choice of Game Forum, the Diversity Jam is running. They accept any CScript game… as long at is not in ENGLISH!

After months of hiatus, the 79th edition of the Bitsy Jam finished recently. The theme was: long distances.

An emotional visual novel about being a struggling indie dev game developer and depiction of suicide in narrative games. It is very short and hits hard.

Eat Me by Chandler Groover (Inform)

It was weird, it was gross… It's just genius. There's no way to describe how insane this game is. Maybe the most disturbing escape game ever made. No wonder it's so highly rated and won awards… TG for walkthroughs!

We... don't really know what we're doing.

Yes, it's true! Not a lot of thought process went into making this. We actually started putting this together at 3-4am after making the Tumblr Blog.

We haven't really made any plan on what should or should not be included in this zine. We just knew we wished we had something like this when we started.

So while it may seem bare right now, we hope, in time, to fill all the pages, and even add more, as we find more projects, and events, and other IF- related stuff to share!

But for that…

New RO height?

Just like Albert/Lavina, and Rayco/Gara, the new RO’s height depends on their gender. The male version is 207cm tall, and the female version is 215cm.

I have been busy enough that I couldn't check tumblr or read for a while but. I'm going to read the hell out of the finished game (well, act 1!) now. Then I'm going to buy it because you deserve the money. Congratulation for finishing act one. Know that your game inspired me to name a little otter plushie i love to death Enid. (Also, the people are cheering. Secret RO no more, this is a glorious day for the people ;;)

Wait the mysterious figure is an RO!!! Can we romance them if we already started with someone else? or do i need to restart the game and romance nobody in order to potentially trigger theirs?

You would have to start from the beginning. I don't want to encourage cheating in any way, and this RO is bit special because their route doesn't work like the others, so I decided to make the mysterious figure have their own personal route. And I gotta say, I like how that's turned out and I can't wait to reach a certain point to see what you all think, hehe :D But of course, there're a lot of things that need to happen first.

Update - Chapter 9 (Act 1 Finale)

Finally, the last chapter of the first act of Remnants Of The Past has arrived! I think back now, and it almost feels like yesterday when I started writing this story. It has certainly grown much more than I initially thought, and I am grateful to all those who have reached this point ^^.

Returning to the chapter itself, besides the final stretch of the story, I also bring some good news that I've been wanting to share for a while! As you know, I've been editing the entire story before finishing it, adding things, tweaking others, and removing some that didn't quite convince me, but there were two things I didn't want to mention until they were completely finished.

Firstly, I've added a friendship route! My idea has always been to make a romance story that accompanies the adventure, so I quickly dismissed the option of making a separate route without any romance (I'm a romantic, I can't help it), but this was when I planned to lock the romances at the end of the act. However, the flow of the story decided that it would be in Chapter 4, and I understand that some may find it harder to stick with one so soon, so I started thinking about adding an alternative route to enjoy the story without MC having a romantic interest, and here it is!

But this doesn't mean that the story will be shorter or less enjoyable if you choose for your MC to remain single! The scenes with the ROs have been adapted to this route, and you can spend time with the characters in a completely platonic way. Sometimes you'll be able to choose who to hang out with, and other times the encounters will be random.

And lastly, the second thing I've added, which excites me more than I thought, is that the mysterious individual is officially an RO! I know some of you were eager to give love to this character (or at least try), and I'm not going to be the one to stop you! However, this RO will be very, very different from the others. Much slower, and with details that I can't mention because they would be severe spoilers, but the option will be there for those who want to take it. To do this, you must choose for MC to remain single for now in Chapter 4.

And that's not all, this character now also has a female version! How cool is that? :D The downside to this, though? All of you who use a save file prior to this update will see the pronoun variables and encounter several inconsistencies that will take you out of the story, because in that save these variables do not exist, so you'll have to start from the beginning.

IMPORTANT NOTE!! This complete first act will be completely free for one week.

On Wednesday, April 24th, the free version will be replaced by the demo that will cover up to Chapter 4, and the purchase version will be available on both Itch.io and Patreon for all those who cannot purchase it through Itch.io.

Monthly Update - March 2024

The end of Act 1 is approaching! Chapter 9 is written and almost revised. This week, I'll dedicate time to give it one final look before coding it. I've also been editing the previous chapters and incorporating all the changes I had planned. Some are minor details, but there are a couple of significant changes that I prefer to keep as a surprise, although I can say that I've completely revamped a couple of scenes.

To start with, my attempts to make chapter 2 less info-heavy aren't going as I thought. I wanted to trim down some of the explanations there, but I can't. The characters need to know everything there. Still, I'm tweaking a couple of parts to make it easier to understand and less confusing, or at least I hope so, lol!

I'm also making some tweaks in chapter 1, like Leire/Luca’s scene at the end when the MC asks them to accompany them home, and a few details here and there in each route. I'm adding more details and changing a couple of scenes with Ada/Omar throughout the act that I didn't consider initially but that are important for the character.

Lastly, similar to Ada/Omar, I'm changing the mood in Rayco/Gara’s scene in chapter 2. They were very out of character before. Although they do try to keep their distance after the revelation, their cold and serious attitude isn't like them and didn't feel right. The same goes for their scene in chapter 5.

In summary, lots of changes this month, lol! I just need to edit chapters 7 and 8, add chapter 9, and do one final detail I want to share with you when I publish the complete act, and then it's all set! If I continue to be this productive, hopefully everything will be ready before the end of the month!

I steadfastly ignored the demo for several months, because I realized that as soon as I read it, your characters would live in my head 24/7. And I was right. Your story is fascinating from the very beginning, I couldn't break away from the plot until the very end of the demo and even then I keep replaying scenes in my mind.

Initially, I thought Lavinia would win my heart. And she did it! But then I saw Rayco and. Well. I was gone. Rayco/Gara is one of the most interesting characters I've ever met! So much angst. Love them. not me listening AFI - miss murder and thinking about Rayco, nope!

All your characters are fascinating, their stories are incredible and I really want to get to know them better and become friends with them(and hug them all...).

You're such a wonderful author, I want to thank you for your story. It's amazing. You're amazing. 🥰
