Update - Chapter 9 (Act 1 Finale)
Chapter 9 – According to plan
Everything is ready to set sail for your destination. The cycle is ending and it's time to say goodbye, but a certain individual might have something to say about it.
---
Finally, the last chapter of the first act of Remnants Of The Past has arrived! I think back now, and it almost feels like yesterday when I started writing this story. It has certainly grown much more than I initially thought, and I am grateful to all those who have reached this point ^^.
Returning to the chapter itself, besides the final stretch of the story, I also bring some good news that I've been wanting to share for a while! As you know, I've been editing the entire story before finishing it, adding things, tweaking others, and removing some that didn't quite convince me, but there were two things I didn't want to mention until they were completely finished.
Firstly, I've added a friendship route! My idea has always been to make a romance story that accompanies the adventure, so I quickly dismissed the option of making a separate route without any romance (I'm a romantic, I can't help it), but this was when I planned to lock the romances at the end of the act. However, the flow of the story decided that it would be in Chapter 4, and I understand that some may find it harder to stick with one so soon, so I started thinking about adding an alternative route to enjoy the story without MC having a romantic interest, and here it is!
But this doesn't mean that the story will be shorter or less enjoyable if you choose for your MC to remain single! The scenes with the ROs have been adapted to this route, and you can spend time with the characters in a completely platonic way. Sometimes you'll be able to choose who to hang out with, and other times the encounters will be random.
And lastly, the second thing I've added, which excites me more than I thought, is that the mysterious individual is officially an RO! I know some of you were eager to give love to this character (or at least try), and I'm not going to be the one to stop you! However, this RO will be very, very different from the others. Much slower, and with details that I can't mention because they would be severe spoilers, but the option will be there for those who want to take it. To do this, you must choose for MC to remain single for now in Chapter 4.
And that's not all, this character now also has a female version! How cool is that? :D The downside to this, though? All of you who use a save file prior to this update will see the pronoun variables and encounter several inconsistencies that will take you out of the story, because in that save these variables do not exist, so you'll have to start from the beginning.
IMPORTANT NOTE!! This complete first act will be completely free for one week.
On Wednesday, April 24th, the free version will be replaced by the demo that will cover up to Chapter 4, and the purchase version will be available on both Itch.io and Patreon for all those who cannot purchase it through Itch.io.
I hope you enjoy this chapter! I've revised everything as thoroughly as I could, but I may have missed some things. If you see anything strange, don't hesitate to contact me or submit a report here!

biscia it’s 2am over here for me rn so im gonna ask you my ultimate question:
do you think papyrus smoking is interesting?
im mainly talking about underswap here but i find it strange he does that there when. sans himself doesn’t smoke?
maybe papyrus smokes due to stress—idk, this ask is kinda all over the fuckin place LOL i think papyrus smoking a big ol cigarette is funny regardless if it fits him or not
I don't care about the swap dude, but canon papyrus should exclusively smoke with undyne when their cooking lesson goes wrong so they can light up the cigarettes on the house fire

Update - Chapter 8
Chapter 8 – Mending souls
And the storm arrived.
---
Man, writing this chapter was tough! Between real life stuff, illnesses, working on the Patreon page, and the usual complications of the writing process itself, this has taken longer than I thought! It's also longer than I initially anticipated, reaching around 45k words, which seems a bit crazy for a single chapter. Obviously, all the routes are included in that number, but it still makes for quite a lengthy one.
Speaking of the chapter itself, it's time for all the decisions made throughout act 1 to come together and reveal the final outcome for the world of Thaon! How will it look and what will happen in the future with that resolution? Only time will tell, but it will undoubtedly be crucial, and certain, um, things need to be taken into account. But, of course, that's something I'll have to deal with in the future, so you don't worry... too much ;).
With this chapter, there's only one more left to finish the act! I can hardly believe it, to be honest. It still feels like I'm in chapter 5 or so, hahaha! However, there's still a lot of story ahead, but we're making progress little by little!
I hope you enjoy Chapter 8, and I'll see you in the next one :D!

Remnants of the Past - Chapter 4
Summary: It’s been ten years since the fall of Beacon and five since the battle for Remnant which changed the world for the better.
Or so the world believes.

Team RWBY is in tatters, their leader having gone missing in the chaos of the final battle has left a person-sized hole where she had once been. The three remaining members have gone their separate ways, some fairing better than others.

Fic:
Ruby’s eyes snapped open at the sound of the T.V. blaring from outside her room, causing the sole occupant of the bed to groan, burying their head further into her pillow. She mumbled incoherent words into the fabric, tucking her arms under it. Ruby tried desperately to ignore the obnoxious sound of early morning cartoons coming from the living room, making it impossible to fall back asleep.
Rolling out of bed, Ruby collapsed onto the floor with an unceremonious thud. “Ugh.” She groaned, pushing herself to her feet and stretching her arms over her head, gripping her elbow and wrapping her arm around her neck. Scratching her stomach, she ambled toward the bathroom, hitting her toe on the door frame. “Fuck! Shit!” She cursed loudly, jumping the rest of the way into the bathroom. Stopping in front of the sink, she turned on the water, splashing it on her face before looking at her reflection.
The person who stared back at her from the mirror was a stranger whom Ruby barely recognized. The stranger's dirty blonde chin-length hair was shaved down to the skin and fell over one eye. She brushed it out of her eye, her reflection mimicking the motion, revealing a jagged scar across her right eye. Pinning her hair back with a clip, Ruby reached for the rag, wetting it and washing the sleep from her eyes. She dug the towel into her ears, cleaning them out before rinsing it and hanging it up.
Ruby finished her morning routine, using the rest of the nearly empty thing of toothpaste, she stared at her reflection as she brushed her teeth. Her dead eye stared back at her as she brushed her teeth. Rinsing out her mouth, she grabbed her contact container and began the arduous task of inserting the green-colored contact. Blinking away the tears that formed, Ruby removed the clip that was keeping her hair back, noticing the black that peeked out from her shitty dye job. “I really need to clean that up.” She muttered as she ran her fingers through her hair. “Eh. I’ll do it later.”
Ruby stretched her arms over her head as a yawn forced itself out of her mouth. She crossed her arms behind her head, hands gripping her elbows as she meandered into the apartment's shared living space. There, the rundown TV was displaying a cartoon that Ruby knew all too well. Somehow it was still airing even after all these years. “What have I said about TV before noon?”
The only other person in the room, a young Faunas, looked up from where they sat on the couch. “It’s almost one, Crimson.”
Ruby furrowed her brows. “Shit? Really?”
“Yup!” Saffron chirped, returning their attention to the T.V.
“Guess I overslept a little, huh?” Ruby reached up to rub the back of her neck.
“Just a little…” Saffron’s shoulders bounced as they laughed.
Ruby reached forward, ruffling their hair. “You think you’re funny, eh, bud?”
Saffron looked up, a smirk pulling at their lips. “Lil’ bit.”
“Come here, you lil’ shit.” Ruby dug her knuckles into the top of their skull, wrapping her arm lightly around their neck.
“Crimson! Stop it!” Saffron laughed, pulling at her arm, leaning their head back against Ruby’s stomach.
“Gonna teach you some goddamn manners!” Ruby laughed as she pinched their cheek, pulling it slightly. She let go giving their hair a final ruffle. “I swear, you’re so cheeky.” Saffron stuck their tongue out at Ruby. “You’re lucky I love you.”
“But ya do.” Saffron sang and Ruby shoved their head as they pulled away.
“I’m going to make some coffee.” Ruby scratched at her stomach, her shirt riding up as she plodded into the small kitchenette. “Do you want anything?”
“I already ate.”
“M’kay.” Ruby drawled as she grabbed a mug, blowing into it before pouring the rest of the coffee into it with an ungodly amount of sugar. Stirring the lukewarm coffee with her finger, she called over her shoulder. “Hey, Saff?"
