One of my favorite parts about working with teens is their fearless expression. The consequence doesn't seem as real to a kid. As adults we we're quick to register that second thought. I try not to teach with much censorship. I let the students be themselves. I do try to instill an idea of professionalism. I ask them to consider their audience, and environment. We have a phrase in my classrooms, "Keep it classy.". While they learn professionalism, they are also given opportunity to speak for themselves. I love the days when we are all working together in the studio setting, creating, and having those heavy conversations about life. The art slowly starts to find a voice through each student's work when they are allowed their freedom. This next show has a lot of unique stories to tell through their visuals. It takes a TON of money to launch a new venture. I had originally wanted to create an entire art exhibition based on these culinary influenced pieces, then use the sales as a fundraiser for @stageculinary. Unfortunately the original gallery didn't work out, so... Here's where we're at... we have had an amazing attorney who Pro Bono set up all of our non profit status for Stage Culinary/DoRadThings. (@doradthingsco). Once this paperwork is finalized and our accounts are set up we can begin creating our events and fundraisers, then partnering with local restaurants and chefs on our student projects. All of it costs significant seed $$$. I will be selling all of the paintings I did for this show independently and putting those proceeds towards the launch of our new non profit DoRadThings/Stage Culinary. By purchasing any of these pieces you will be a founding donor and put on a very select list of partners and VIPs to our next Stage Culinary dinner. I try to teach kids in a way that shows them how to take their talents and put them to work. Not just for their own wallets, but taking your talents and making them larger than even your own life. My entire career has been built off the mediocre ability to make art. To me I've never dreamt of painting the next Mona Lisa, I've dreamt of how much impact my paintings can have on the world around me. This painting is a fun play on humor, and Pop Art. I tried to incorporate some urban elements, along with classic technique, and a bit of graffuturism. It's 40x30 on gallery depth canvas (1.5inch deep), painted with oils, acrylic, @montanacans, @sharpie, and charcoal. This painting was a very instrumental shift in my painting style. The negative space and gritty, yet sharp lines and contrast gave me a jolt I hadn't had in awhile to create. This was the 3rd version of the Bourdain boards. A simple black & white version. "This represents so many things to me. The crown is a representation of Max's crown from Where the Wild Things Are, done in an almost Basquiat-esque style. Basquiat was known for his heavy use of crowns and I feel like Bourdain has earned his. This photo of Bourdain is so perfect in my mind (I'm still trying to figure out who the original photographer is???). I made these for me, not really as great art statement, but because I wanted to make them for my own home (I've made three total.). I love the youthful nature of the Max crown, coupled with the smirk and confident gesture. The fact Bourdain was in his forties before he found his first major success is incredibly inspiring.
