An evening in Bucharest, 1890-something.
Daniela hissed, "Don't embarrass me in front of the lieutenant."
"I'm sure you'll do a fine job of that yourself."

After having watched X and Pearl (Pearl in particular), I couldn't help but imagine Mia Goth playing one of the Dimitrescu sisters - potentially Daniela, based on fanonical character traits. She gives some of the most unhinged, deranged performances I've ever seen.

Hahaha brilliant! I initially imagined her discovering - inadvertently - that needles had more constructive purposes besides "other hobbies" (the versatility!)
This made my day, thanks for taking the time to answer! (I know nothing about knitting or crocheting either.)
And doilies, madam, are not tacky.
Your work is always a joy to read!
I'm intrigued by Cassandra's knitting/crocheting hobby
How did she get into it? Is it casual or does she dedicate a lot of time to the skill? Is there anything she makes well?
Why, I'm happy to hear that! Your wonderful art is one of my favorites in the fandom, so that you enjoy my stories as well means the world to me <3
Also, thank you for the question, because I've been dying to elaborate on Cassandra's quirks lol
Like most things in the sisters' lives, this particular set of hobbies relates back to Alcina. You see, after a couple of decades had passed since the daughters joined the family and the inevitable boredom of immortality started to creep in, Cassandra's natural restless soon began to tear at her Mother's nerves.
She had too much energy (plus bottled resentment) and nothing to take it out on if not her family or the servants, especially during the wintertime, which had a negative and rather direct impact on Alcina's sense of domestic equilibrium. Worse, add in the fact that Bela and Dani also have their issues and the other Lords were starting to comment on how the fearsome Lady D couldn't even tame her own litter. That couldn't continue.
To remedy this, the Countess began to push activities onto her troublesome middle daughter - one after the other, whatever was in hand given their limited worldview, just to see if something could keep her distracted long enough for Alcina to hear her own thoughts. And it wasn't like she could get shipped off to finishing school or left to the care of a chaperone like her biological parents had originally done. It was the epitome of throwing papers at the wall to see if one would stick.
Problem is, Cassandra is hard to please. She and her mother are quite alike in that regard. So chess was a disaster, she wouldn't sit still long enough to manage to get through a single song on the piano or for the landscape sketch to get colored in, and though dancing always did help to take the edge off her, merely feeding a lifelong obsession wasn't a sustainable diversion when snow started piling outside and hunting down in the village was no longer an option. Killing was the only thing that she cared about - shame that the village population is a finite resource.
But here is the thing: Alcina has long done needlework, especially sewing and embroidering, as a way to preserve her fine motor skills in response to her ever-growing body. Knitting was among her less favored variants, but with boredom being what it is, she has some experience with it nonetheless. So when Dani came in screaming her complaints regarding Cassie being difficult as ever and interrupted Alcina's flow, she blindly reached into her crafts trunk and gave them each something to do "in silence" (that was the important bit). Cassandra ended up with knitting needles in her hands, so Alcina offered her a half-assed tutorial on a basic stitch, a ball of yarn, and called it a day on motherhood.
It was love at first stitch.
Cassandra has been knitting ever since and even picked up crochet on her own a little later. To her, it is more of a fidget/focus activity rather than something she does for creative purposes - she loves the repetitive motions that rely on muscle memory and finds them a good tool to sort out her thoughts when reality turns overwhelming.
Now, she isn't dedicated to perfecting her technique for the sake of improving the quality of her creations, nor is she overly invested in what the final product even looks like; mostly she sticks to the simplest of methods, just whatever feels good on the hands, but she ends up putting a number of hours into it nevertheless (sometimes daily - you will often find her stitching away anytime she is sitting around with her sisters) and so she has become quite efficient in her workflow. Two centuries of doing something certainly maxes out the "practice" requirement - she probably could tackle any pattern you toss at her. Is she still beat by a number of actual grandmas? For sure, but that has more to do with the passion for the craft than anything on a technical level.
As for things she does well - since most of her enjoyment comes from the means of the activity rather than the end goal, she prefers putting together longer pieces that will keep her entertained for large blocks of time. This means that she is stellar at making blankets. Like, Alcina has *so* many that are made precisely to her size because every time Cassandra doesn't know what to do with herself, she makes another one. The other daughters are used to their sister silently flying in and dumping yet another thick-knit duvet on top of them for the third time this winter. Just... Blankets everywhere. It's pathological.
She has also been known to make pieces to complete the staff's uniform. Scarfs, berets, gloves, the odd sock here and there. Actual clothes or accessories are less fun to her, mostly because of the geometric dilemma of piecing it all together into a cohesive shape, but she enjoys being useful. Keeps the livestock from getting sick due to the cold, too.
Oh, and those crochet dollies to be put on tables that every Brazilian grandma is obsessed with, even though they serve no purpose beyond looking pretty! That is exactly the sort of old-school (tacky) that Alcina is, and Cassandra enables it by making a bunch for her to place around the house.
And because Cass is a mama's girl through and through, she makes a public demonstration in support of Maria's decisions by putting together an abundance of baby regalia for Eva to sport. Does she hate every second of it? Yes, tiny socks are the worst. But she gets all of Maria's praise for her collaboration, so it is worth it in the end :)
