The Family Reunion Book is handmade combining collaged photographs and drawings of family, present and past, as well as strangers. While I will never cut up the best of my collected images (maybe) the question I’m always asking myself is “what did you save all this for?” It certainly wasn’t to sit in a box. And I think of all the trillions of pictures in boxes, and now on hard drives, in America! How weird. Decades ago I read a book about shamanism in which it was suggested to, while listening to an alpha wave inducing drumbeat, stare into the eyes of an animal, like your dog or cat, and imagine seeing yourself through their eyes. This book of drawings has page after page of strange juxtapositions. The bent-neck deer disciplinarian & a passel of pigs; a Madonna & a smoke-head maiden; two figure models & a squirrel-lady……. Some of my recent book pages have a Hawaiian theme. I am 1/4 native Hawaiian but was raised in the desert southwest, far from the ocean. And since my parents divorced when I was 7 I’ve only spent time with Hawaiian relatives a few times in my life and in places like, ironically, Las Vegas and Indianapolis. Finally some more samples from my bookmaking project, which I’m (thankfully) done with for the winter. It is a more complicated task than I always think at the beginning, and since I’m learning my results are mixed (which often feels like a waste). But it’s all just “making”, day after day. I like the drawings, and how they speak to each other. The books have narratives, but ones that are mysterious and oblique, even impenetrable, like all my work.
