Reaching out

You know you have to look bad when the father of one of the kids I used to watch comes over after mass to check on me. Made me feel all sorts of guilty because I didn’t do the same for his son when I had a gut feeling something was off.

I never, NEVER thought lil man would hang himself the next day.

I wish with all my heart that I would’ve caught Dad that same day and told him that something didn’t seem right. Maybe lil man would still be around then.

But I am grateful that Dad took the time to reach out to me today, making sure I was okay and that I knew that he and his family still cared about me even though I hadn’t seen them in a while. I may ‘only’ be having a bad depressive day today, but what if I was suicidal? What if I was where I was 4 months ago, debating when and where to take the pills? His act could have made the difference.

Reach out to the people around you if something seems off. Even if you see no signs, but just have a gut feeling. Don’t always count on those of us with mental illness to ask for help. Sometimes we can’t find the words, or we don’t want to bother you, or we’re afraid of being called attention seeking or crazy, or many, many other reasons.

And for the love of God, be kind when you do. We could be at our lowest point, vulnerable, hurting, raw. Your words, your actions, could tip the scale one way or the other.

He tipped my scale back towards stability and life today, pushed back the darkness a little bit for me, enough that I’m able to fight out of the rest of it. I can’t thank him enough for that

Happy Feast Day Blessed Alexandrina Maria da Costa

1904-1955 Feast Day: October 13 Patronage: Youth, against sexual temptation, penitent women

Blessed Alexandrina Maria da Costa was a Portuguese mystic and “victim soul.” At 14, she jumped out of a window to save herself from being raped and was paralyzed by it. She was bedridden for 31 years and existed on the Eucharist alone, for 13 of them. Suffering for love of God, conversion of sinners and reparation for offenses was her vocation. She had visions of Jesus and of the devil (who tormented her). She died in conformity to the will of God and abandonment to her sufferings and is known as the “fourth seer of Fatima.”

Happy Feast Day Saint Denis

Died around 270 Feast Day: October 9 Patronage; France, against headaches, frenzy and possessed people. Saint Denis, bishop, and martyr, is the patron of France and one of the Fourteen Holy Helpers. He was beheaded together with his two deacons in connection with the Decian persecution of Christians. After his head was chopped off, Denis is said to have picked it up and walked six miles, preaching a sermon the entire way.
