“We preferred our own way of living. We were no expense to the government. All we wanted was peace and to be left alone.”-Crazy Horse Crazy Horse was a Lakota war leader who fought against the American federal government to stop the further theft of Lakota land and to preserve their traditions. As if in contradiction with his name and skill as a warrior, his personality was described as shy, aloof, modest, generous, and was more comfortable in small groups, being observed joking with his troops. People wanted to fight for him, not because of an inspiring speech, but because he took the time to build a strong relationship with them. There is no known photo of Crazy Horse. But despite keeping to himself, his fight for resistance made him one of the most recognizable names in Native American history today. #illustration #ink #lineart #ocad #history #quote #crazyhorse #horse #resistence (at OCAD University)

“Let me die in the old uniform in which I fought my battles for freedom. May God forgive me for putting on another.”-Benedict Arnold Benedict Arnold, a name that became synonymous with betrayal or traitorous actions. With a legacy like this, many forget his early accomplishments and dedication to America. He ran away from home to enlist, fought in the battles of Saratoga, nearly made Canada their 14th state, and fought the british navy to a draw with boast he commissioned from random new yorkers. Any one of these accomplishments would have made anyone else an american folk hero. After losing his wealth and business, being constantly looked over for promotions, having credit stolen from him, and losing a part of his leg in Saratoga, Arnold became the traitor we all know today. His heroics early in his career don't excuse his traitorous actions, but perhaps we should be remembering all of Benedict Arnold. #illustration #benedictarnold #history #americanhistory #gradex #ocad #thesis (at OCAD University)

“A leader can never be happy until his people are happy.”- Genghis Khan The infamous leader of the Mongol empire, known as the barbarian who raped and murdered his way across the continent. A skilled leader, Genghis Khan united the divided mongol factions and conquered more land in 25 years than the Romans did in 400 and held onto power by killing villages of anyone who may have opposed him. Ruthless and merciless, a man of the people isn’t the first thing you’d think to call Genghis Khan. Though a merciless man, he was also known for his tolerance of different religions, ethnicities, and nationalities and his belief in a merit based reward system set him apart from other Mongol leaders. Though he himself was born into his role, he promoted people based on skill rather than bloodline. Genghis Khan has many known quotes, but this one stood out to me as a stark contrast to his bloody legacy. #genghiskhan #history #legacy #ocad #thesis #illustration (at OCAD University)

"Pardonnez-moi, monsieur."-Marie Antoinette Her final words, said to her executioner after stepping on their foot. She lived so unapologetically and lavishly, and yet her last words were and apology to the last person you’d expect. #art #illustration #marieantoinette #ocad #history #quote #lastwords (at OCAD University)

“I don’t even trust myself.”-Joseph Stalin. This quote was said shortly before Satlin's death. This man was responsible for an estimated 50 million deaths while he was leader of the Soviet Union. But by the end of his life, his body and mind had greatly deteriorated and he fell into a paranoia. For all the cruelty and all the people he betrayed, he died being unable to trust anyone. #history #illustration #stalin #ocad #quote (at OCAD University)

"What is a throne? — a bit of wood gilded and covered in velvet."- Napoleon Bonaparte. Napoleon had career full of contradictions. He used tyranny to protect the ideals of the French revolution, and spread ideals of liberty and democracy through conquering. Men gained more freedom than they had ever had before, but women lost many of the rights they won in the revolution. He was a genral and a tyrant. Whether the world would have been better or worse off without him can be debated, but it can't be denied that the world would not be the same. #art #history #illustration #ocad #napoleonbonaparte (at Thunder Bay, Ontario)
