My PIN number to this day is my second grade best friends birthday. There are people I don’t talk to anymore whose families are still in my prayers. There are shirts I wear to bed from exes of 8 years ago who are married now with kids. And I haven’t found a macaroni salad recipe better than my college boyfriend’s mom’s. Our lives are made up of so many people and when people become parts of our lives, some parts remain long after they leave. And in the same exact way, it’s comforting to know there are so many lives you’re still a part of that you have no idea about.

“2am thoughts of a first-year philosophy major and critical over-thinker”
I like the idea of self determination, of autonomy. I like to believe that I am not wandering aimlessly through life experiencing a series of pushes and pulls which will sum up my time on this planet. I want to have control, or at least the illusion of control, over something and if not my life and the outcome of my actions then what? I prefer to believe that we live in a world where the things we do act as dominoes and every action or inaction has a result, which causes another result and another and another. I like to believe that me sitting in this library at 2:06 am, typing out my stream of consciousness will have ends that go far beyond tomorrow, far beyond now. I like to believe that everything in life is intentional, and that chance and coincidences are concepts enforced by people who refuse to take responsibility for their actions. By stripping away the intent, you detach the end from the mean, leaving things as just things. Personally, I don’t like idea of living in vacuo, i don’t like the detachment, and i don’t agree with isolation. I believe in causes and effects, ends and means, intentions and actions. I believe that people don’t do things just for the sake of doing them, whether they know it or not. I believe the subconscious is more powerful than the conscious. You may not know your means, you may not know your intentions, you may not know why you do what you do, but your brain has already made these decisions for you. The mind, the subconscious, the very core of who you are, the parts of you that you can’t even explain hold the answers. This is what makes us human. I read in my ethics class that it is autonomy, free will, and self determination that set humans apart from all other creations, and I agree. I believe that our ability to think freely is our greatest gift, but it is so often unused. Humans are creatures of habit and collaboration, needing to coexistence with other humans in order to feel fulfilled. That is not to discredit those who are shy or introverted; it is just to say that a part of human nature is living within the realms of humanity. Socialization is something that creates a functioning human. With this we form groups and bonds, and in these groups we collaborate on ideas, we create morals, and we determine standards. We sacrifice our ability to think freely in order to think as a collective. We sacrifice our ability to determine our own life, for a life that’ll fit within the normalities of the society we live in. Some even choose to sacrifice their individuality for the group because as humans we so desperately need acceptance and to belong. Any person that exercises their free-will and free-thought is outcasted. They are seen as radicals, weird, and in some cases crazy. The insecurity that festers from neglecting our need to be ourselves, for the need to be accepted eats away at us. It is as if humanity is a walking paradox. The very thing that makes us human becomes the very thing we choose to sacrifice to create humanity. If freedom be a concept held at such high regards, then why is it something we so often try to strip away. Does the fact that it is an innate attribute that can still be confiscated make freedom all the more valuable? The ultimate crime against a human would be dehumanizing them, stripping them of the very thing that makes them human. But there are certain people who see our freedom to be and or freedom to choose as something active, something constantly practiced. They have mastered the concept of being in a group but not of the group, they have mastered the art of coexisting without conforming. The genius is the one who’s mind is completly free and unbound. Those who truly value and protect their freedom, understand what it means to be free. There are some people who are lucky enough to not need the validation that comes with sameness and can stand comfortably in their difference. They are the ones who are superior. Human condition is defined by two things: our ability to self-determine and our autonomy, within the world we live in. The one who exists in a life free from external control and influence, free to choose their own actions and orchestrate their own fate, is the one who has figured out the key to life itself.

When you want something the world cannot give you, go within. It does not matter how spiritual you are, whether you meditate daily or eat green. There is a power in the seas and skies that is interested in YOU. Within your mind, call upon this energy to show itself to you. And watch as every situation and emotion gradually changes for the better. When your day starts to go right, when conversations flow, when your needs are met, when your mood is better… you know the great energy of the world has heard you.

I can never read all the books I want; I can never be all the people I want and live all the lives I want. I can never train myself in all the skills I want. And why do I want? I want to live and feel all the shades, tones and variations of mental and physical experience possible in my life. And I am horribly limited.

“Be gentle with the world around you, for it too, is an entity. We reside in it, and day in and day out, it takes care of us. The world is our home. Thus, walk softly. Show it the respect that it deserves.”

"Resistance is the force that keeps us from living the life we want to live. Resistance can make a writer not write, a painter to not paint, a dancer to not dance. It's something that lies within us all. It is what prevents us from getting up off the couch and in front of a notebook, getting out of bed and in front of an easel, or getting into your car and driving to the dance studio. If you can learn to beat resistance, you can learn how to be successful. Wake up every morning with the intention to fight back."

If you’re attempting to break a habit, don’t say “this is the last time i’m doing it”. Say, “this is the first time i’m not doing it.”
