Saw some ppl in Kelutral asking how to make the kxekx or kx sound properly and remembered this helpful linguistuc video on it I watched to realize how easier it to say it is than it seems. Its also called an ejective consonant and its much more common to make in speech (esp British English Speech and some American dialects) than one may realize!

Plus a Na'vi mention!

After watching this video I cant unhear what was once an unnoticable sound that had no name to me. I can feel myself do it and hear it more definitively. Not only that, but to actually do it doesnt require as much tension and explosion of air as I previously thought while speaking Na'vi (thats just for style lol).

A prime example of the easiness of this sound is saying "what the fuck" with an emphasis on the -ck in 'fuck', which often comes out as a [k'], or kx in Na'vi.

Once you have that one, you have a much better awareness and grasp of how plosives are made to try the other 2 Na'vi has ([t'] or tx and [p'] or px).

I'm learning to think of using the topical to indicate inalienable possession as 'regarding [that/X] of mine/yours/etc'. It helps me build intuition about the idiomatic nature of using the topical for possesion and for the nature lf Na'vi word order patterns is general.

The examples from Horen where the thing possessed is not contingent to the topical were confusing me the most, as I couldnt understand how to literally translate a topical, which English doesnt quite designate in the language, at least not as infixes, single words, or even particles. But then I found a work around that smoothed the translation path I was on:

Oeri nì’i’a tsyokx zoslolu. / My hand is finally healed.

"Regarding of mine finally hand be healed"

Oeri ta peyä fahew akewong ontu teya längu. / My nose is full of his alien smell.

Regarding [that] of mine from his/her odor [of] alien nose full be [negative]

Ngari hu Eywa salew tirea, tokx ’ì’awn slu Na’viyä hapxì. / Your spirit goes with Eywa, your body remains to become part of the People.

Regarding [that] of yours with Eywa proceed spirit, body remains to become Na'vi's part.

I noticed I could possibly translate things this way when I learned that the genitive -yä translates more literally as the word 'of' or the adpositional phrase 'of [_]' than just the English apostraphe-s ('s). So seeing the contrasting difference in use of possession in the third Horen example, I can better distinguish inalienable possession from general possession by looking at how the suffixes induce a different sense of relationship between the possessed thing they head and also where in the sentence the type of suffix is, therefore better translating and understanding a sentence as either 'regarding [X] of mine' or generally 'X of X'.

If that makes sense hrh....

My Metkayina oc! Remember that piece I was working on last week? Well I scrapped it and did something new.

So, I know I'm pretty tardy to the party, but I finally got frontiers of Pandora! My general fixation on avatar has generally dulled a little, unfortunately, BUT I still love it so I jumped in!

My thoughts:

I love that you can hear npcs talking about Jake and Neytiri and even Kiri!!

I love the movement, and the jumping. It feels very fun to just sprint at things and then bounce up them

I think its funny that the Sarentu can just double jump

Love the lore, and I've been able to spot some phrasing that was used in the original survival guide too

So'lek. That is all.

I do not like that it's only in 1st person; photo mode is cool, but if i'm gonna get all these great and beautiful cosmetics, i want to be able to see them outside of the menu!

I haven't had the easiest time navigating the controls/menu, but that's probably just me. Where is the health pouch.

Was having some trouble w screen tearing, but toggling v-sync has seemed to fix it

Really don't like that I can't pick my own dialogue, see my character, or romance anyone. I'm used to that bc I usually play story-heavy games so I wish that was a factor. Stupid Ubisoft.

The realization that if Trudy lived she would’ve LOVED those Sully kids with her whole heart.

Her and Norm would’ve spoiled them rotten.

They would’ve undoubtedly taken a responsibility for Spider and looked after him at the lab with the other scientists.

I have no doubt in my mind Lo’ak would be her favorite!!

She’d give Tuk packs hubba bubba gum and have bubble blowing contests.

I feel like Kiri would love collecting rocks for her.

And Neteyam probably would’ve thought she was really pretty.

Things tend to simmer down for most things between movies/series, it is frustrating though. But everyone will reanimated when we get close to the next movie, and then we can all jump back into it!

Tbh I feel like, as big as the Avatar universe is, theres not much offered in canon material about much of it. And its been that way for much of the franchise history, most of which has been retconned or otherwise abandoned. So the dearth of writings about canon material and story potential in favor of fanfic and smut, at least on this platform, is rather lackluster.

It could be that Avatar as a franchise is just weaning off me finally. I mean, A2 didnt have much effect on me and while I enjoyed engaging fandom while the mocie had its theatrical run, its plot and delivery still had so many issues and poor politcal implications that it was hard to enjoy the material and interact w fans who didnt have much to say abt it or otherwise condoned it (ex: the misogyny written of Neytiri's character, the rampant white saviorism and noble savage imagery of both films, etc).

I think I'm being a bit harsh here, but again, its my bias, Avatar could just be something I'm growing out of, or I'm just not seeing anything interesting. I'm quite picky abt what I enjoy in the franchise and the canon's development hasnt offered much, imo, that resonates w me as a black woman.

I mean, theres FoP, which is an Avatar experence full of lore and creative referrnces to politcal issues and indigenous cultures, for sure. And while I have no consoles or PCs compatible with the game to fully enjoy that myself, I still found ways to engage and enjoy it through LetsPlays and wikis and the Kelutral server; I enjoy analyzing and just consuming as escapist entertainment. And ofc theres the Na'vi language, which I rlly enjoy learning and applying as it's helped me so much w my general polyglot ambitions where otherwise I struggled learning language (I've made a lot of speech recordings of it lately).

But despite those things, I'm personally a bit burned out by the fan experience online, or at least on tumblr. Its just evident to me that the lack of things to talk abt canon-material wise means there wasnt much to begin with and/or the fanbase isnt as critical or interested as I'd hope about such material, and its quite disappointing. Again, I'm rlly not into fanfic. Not to say I dont enjoy non-canon material, but I've always prefered visual/illustrative media. And also, I just dont relate to much of the younger fanbase, whom are fixated in their sexual desires for the characters and not much else lol. Waiting almost an entire year for A3 IF it doesnt get delayed again without much engagement from fandom is quite a bummer for me.

But perhaps its better to have patience. A3 and its fandom will be my litmus test for whether I continue as an Avatar fan or finally move on lol. 💀

Final update for my Pa’li charm project!

He’s all finished!!

I’m so happy with how this little guy turned out, and especially that I figured out how to get him to hang fairly easily. There’s a few things I would do differently if I made him again but otherwise I’m really happy with how he turned out!!

I opted for feather beads rather than actual feathers this time around but maybe if I do this again I’ll use those instead.
