Ukraine just put two key Russian military aircraft out of commission. It will now be more difficult for Russia to direct operations against Ukraine.
The Ukrainian Air Force shot down a Russian A-50M/U intelligence gathering plane – somewhat similar to US Air Force E-3 Sentry (AWACS) aircraft. And it severely damaged an Il-22M11 command and control aircraft which was able to land but is beyond repair.
It’s official. Russian and Ukrainian sources have confirmed that Ukrainian air-defenses on Sunday hit, over southern Ukraine and the Sea of Azov, two of Russia’s rarest and most valuable support planes: a Beriev A-50 radar early-warning plane and an Ilyushin Il-22 airborne command post. “Who did this?” the Ukrainian air force quipped. The answer, it seems, is the air arm’s 90-mile-range Patriot PAC-2 air-defense missiles. The jet-propelled A-50—one of nine A-50M/Us in service—fell into the Sea of Azov in flames, likely killing everyone on board: potentially 15 people including high-ranking officers and highly-trained radar specialists. The propeller-driven Il-22, with up to 10 people aboard, managed to land in Anapa on the Russian side of the Sea of Azov’s southern coast. “Urgently requesting ambulance and fire crew,” the crew radioed as they wrestled their shrapnel-holed plane toward the air base. Photos of the damaged Il-22, snapped after it landed, illustrate the extent of the damage—a mangled tail fin and fuselage—and also reveal the plane’s exact variant. It’s an Il-22M11, and it might be a total write-off. This version of the 1950s-vintage Ilyushin turboprop is rare. The Russian air force has maybe 12 Il-22Ms after mutinous Wagner Group mercenaries shot down one of the planes over western Russia back in June. While the Russians could modify an old Ilyushin airframe into a replacement Il-22M, they probably can’t do so quickly—or cheaply. An A-50 or Il-22M might cost hundreds of millions of dollars.
Russia had only about ten of the A-50 planes. One was blown up by Belarusian partisans 11 months ago south of Minsk. And now one is sleeping with the fishes in the Sea of Azov.
Here are pictures of the Il-22M11 which was able to make an emergency landing at Anapa in Russia.

Yet another Russian warship is sleeping with the fishes. Vladimir Putin, his minion Donald Trump, and his minion "MAGA Mike" Johnson are all in tears.
This time it's a missile-corvette called the Sergey Kotov. It is a relatively new vessel, having been commissioned just over 19 months ago. It was hit by MAGURA V5 sea drones built and operated by Ukraine. The Sergey Kotov sank off the coast of Feodosiya (also transliterated as Feodosia) in Russian-occupied Crimea.
It will not be easy to replace this vessel.
Another Month. Another Russian Warship, Blown Up On The Black Sea. Ukraine’s drone boats are relentless.
The 308-foot, 1,700-ton Project 22160 corvette reportedly sank off of Feodosiya in southeastern Crimea. If confirmed, the sinking would extend the Russian Black Sea Fleet’s losing streak as Russia’s wider war on Ukraine grinds into its third year. Since February 2022 the Ukrainians have blown up or sunk four Russian landing ships, a cruiser, a submarine, a supply ship, several patrol boats and small landing craft and now two missile-corvettes.
Why these sinkings in the Black Sea are significant.
Russian shipyards still manage to build large submarines, but they struggle to build surface warships heavier than a few thousand tons. And while the Russians might eventually be able to construct a new Project 22160 to replace Sergei Kotov, they wouldn’t be able to sail the new ship into the Black Sea. That’s because the only major waterway in and out of the Black Sea—the Bosporus Strait—is controlled by Turkey, a NATO member. And, during wartime, Turkey doesn’t allow any warships into the Black Sea. Allied or enemy.
This was not a short distance operation. The drones had to travel around the southern tip of occupied Crimea.

The GOP-run House of Representatives has been without a Speaker since Tuesday 03 October 2023.
In Ukraine, Ruslan Stefanchuk (Руслан Стефанчук) has been Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada (Верховна Рада) since 08 October 2021. He got the position just one day after his predecessor had been voted out by the ruling Sluha Narodu Party over policy differences. By comparison, it's about three weeks since Kevin McCarthy was voted out of the Speaker's chair.
So this is another reason why the House Putin Caucus doesn't like Ukraine – its national parliament make them look like even bigger fools.
Speaking of Ukraine, there is still a war going on there against Putin's genocidal invaders. If the blanket coverage of the Middle East has kept you from hearing the latest on Ukraine, here's an opportunity to catch up on the last few days. It's mostly good news. 🇺🇦

From @Ohra_aho – a retired Finnish general.
You can’t have a Victory Day parade in Moscow these days. It might just remind Russians that Putin is far from victory on Day 422 of his three-day “special operation” in Ukraine.
Not only does Russia look bad for its poor overall military performance in Ukraine, but it also just bombed one of its own cities, Belgorod, which was never part of Ukraine.
Russia’s air force accidentally bombs own city of Belgorod
Because of tight media censorship, tens of millions of Russians don’t understand what an international embarrassment Putin and his armed forces really are.

Members of the puppet government which Russia set up in the occupied city of Tokmak are apparently leaving as the Ukrainian military advanced to within 20 km of town.
That’s according to the information of locals reported by Ivan Fedorov, the mayor of Melitopol, which is the next occupied Ukrainian city in the area. “The occupiers are being smoked out of Tokmak. Almost daily explosions and the liberation of settlements in the Melitopol direction transform Tokmak, which is still occupied, to a completely front-line city,” Fedorov said. While the initial distance from the Russian-occupied city of Tokmak to the frontline was about 31 km, it is now less than 20 km as the Ukrainian army advanced, taking Robotyne and areas around it. The Ukrainian army has reached the second line of Russian defense in the area.
A few days ago Ukraine liberated the village of Robotyne. Ukraine's goal is to reach the Sea of Azov and thereby cut the Russian-occupied territories in two.
As was reported, following the liberation of Robotyne, Ukrainian troops are continuing their offensive in Melitopol direction in Zaporizhzhia Oblast, bypassing minefields and advancing towards the second line of defense of the Russian Army.

Russia is a closed totalitarian society. Greater effort is required to determine what is going on beneath the surface. Despite Tucker Carlson's glowing propaganda postcards from Moscow, Russia is experiencing what might charitably be called supply chain issues in its illegal war of aggression against Ukraine.
Russia is struggling to provide ammunition and weapons for its war in Ukraine, according to Western officials. It is facing "extreme challenges" in obtaining sufficient equipment and materiel, an official said. It comes as concerns over the provision of Western weapons to Ukraine are mounting. As the war enters its third year, the supply of ammunition, arms and manpower looks set to be a critical factor. "Russia's domestic ammunition production capabilities are currently insufficient for meeting the needs of the Ukraine conflict," a Western official claimed, saying Moscow has been able to increase its supply only by seeking out alternative sources of ammunition and weapons, which does not offer a long-term solution. They pointed to the impact of sanctions as one cause. "Sanctions are hitting the Russian military industrial complex hard, causing severe delays and increasing costs. An inability to access Western components is severely undermining Russia's production of new systems and repairs of old systems, with long-term consequences for the quality of weapons produced," they said.
This is the time to supply Ukraine with more aid. But assistance is being held up by MAGA American weakness Republicans led by Putin ally Donald Trump.
The claims about Russian weapons supply come ahead of the second anniversary of Russia's invasion of Ukraine on 24 February. The assessment from Western officials is that Russia has not given up on its original goals of "subjugating" Ukraine. But they said Russia does not have a clear plan to bring that about other than hoping that in the long term its superior manpower and resources will make the difference by grinding its neighbour down. Russia is currently producing more ammunition than Ukraine is receiving. However, Russia may be close to its limits of supply while there remains the possibility that Ukraine could still get more from its allies.
Putin really doesn't want the world, and especially Russia, to know about the catastrophic extent of Russian losses. One pro-war Russian blogger killed himself after he was forced to remove posts about massive Russian fatalities in their Pyrrhic advance through Avdiivka.
Russian war blogger reportedly dies by suicide after saying 16,000 Russian troops lost in battle for Avdiivka
Multiple Russian pro-war Telegram channels have reported that Andrey Morozov, a Russian soldier who runs a popular Telegram channel and goes by the pseudonym Murz, has died by suicide. Lawyer Maxim Pashkov, who said he spoke to Morozov the previous night, reported that the military blogger shot himself. According to Pashkov, there was “no sign” during their conversation that Morozov was considering taking his life. On Wednesday morning, Morozov published a series of posts on his channel in which he said that he was going to shoot himself and asked his readers “not to be sad” about his death. He asked to be buried in the self-proclaimed “Luhansk People’s Republic.” Morozov wrote that on February 20, his superiors forced him to delete a post from his channel. According to BBC Russian, this likely refers to a post in which Morozov said that the Russian army lost 16,000 soldiers and 300 armored vehicles during the battle for control of the village of Avdiivka. The BBC noted that the post drew fierce criticism from Russian propagandists, who accused the blogger of “slandering the Russian Defense Ministry.” According to Morozov’s final messages, the order from his superiors was issued under pressure from the “political prostitutes led by [propagandist] Vladimir Solovyov.”
Interestingly, the late Andrey Morozov's estimate of 16,000 Russian deaths was not far from the Ukrainian estimate of 17,000 dead Russians in the same operation. Overall, Ukrainian figures of Russian losses are reasonably accurate.

« The uproar over Tucker Carlson’s announcement that he would interview Vladimir Putin was that the session would amount to pure Kremlin propaganda. Carlson, after all, is an admirer of Putin who, in his days as a Fox News host, hoped out loud that Russia would win its war against Ukraine. It was also feared that Putin would spout a stream of lies and that Carlson, who is not a real journalist, much less a historian, would be incapable of pushing back.
In this sense, the two-hour interview, which aired Thursday night on X and Carlson’s website, exceeded all expectations. It is a thoroughly repellent show—for the perniciousness of Putin’s falsehoods, the thoroughness of Carlson’s complicity, and the possible impact it might have at a time when many in Congress are looking for any excuse to cut off further aid to Ukraine’s embattled military. »
— Fred Kaplan at Slate.
The only good part of this event is that Putin probably bored the shit out of most viewers in just the first 10 minutes who decided there were better things to do.
When you're a dictator who controls state TV and censors the internet, you take for granted having a captive audience. Here in the decadent West we are under no obligation to listen to Putin's mind-numbing, pseudo-historical drivel spewed at a far right Trump influencer cosplaying as a journalist.
Megan Gibson at The New Statesman pointed out how the "interview" got off to a dubious start even before it began.
Tumblr media
A second rate influencer would have gotten burned in a comments section for similar stupidity. With Tucker Carlson, it's a struggle to make it up to second rate.

Ukraine hit yet another ship in Russia's shrinking Black Sea Fleet.
This time it was what the Russian navy calls a "rescue ship" (i.e. a salvage ship) called the Kommuna.
The interesting thing about the Kommuna is that it was originally commissioned on 14 July 1915 – when Tsar Nikolai II was ruling Russia as a near-absolute monarch during World War I. Russia again has a near-absolute leader during another catastrophic war. 🤔
It tells us something about the state of the Russian military that they were still using in active service a ship that is essentially a museum piece. We already have seen them using tanks in Ukraine that date back to the Nikita Khrushchev era. People in the West who run around with their hair on fire worrying about Russia's alleged strength are not looking closely at the reality of this strength.
The Kommuna was damaged at Russian-occupied Sevastopol by a Neptune (Нептун Р-360) missile which was manufactured by Ukraine.
Dmytro Pletenchuk, a spokesperson for Ukraine's Navy, told the Liga media outlet on April 21 that the navy had struck a ship in occupied Sevastopol and confirmed that it was the Kommuna, a salvage ship. The extent of the damage to the ship is unclear at the time of this publication. Earlier in the day, the Russian proxy official Mikhail Razvozhayev claimed an anti-ship missile had been "repelled" in occupied Sevastopol and that "fragments caused a small fire, which was quickly extinguished. Unverified video posted to social media appeared to show a Russian naval vessel on fire and local media reported the Crimea bridge had been closed. The Kommuna was launched in 1915 and is the oldest ship still in service in the Russian Navy. Sevastopol is home to Russia’s Black Sea Fleet and is frequently targeted by Ukrainian missile and sea drone strikes. Pletenchuk said on March 30 that Russia had withdrawn nearly all its major ships from ports in occupied Crimea following successful Ukrainian strikes. To prevent further Ukrainian drone strikes on the Black Sea fleet, Russian forces in occupied Crimea are constructing barriers at the entrance to Sevastopol Bay, the partisan group Atesh reported on March 27.

EXCELLENT! 👍🏼 🇺🇦 The only way to end the war for good will be with Putin's defeat.
A flagship Russian long-range bomber has been destroyed in a Ukrainian drone strike, according to reports. Images posted on social media and analysed by BBC Verify show a Tupolev Tu-22 on fire at Soltsy-2 airbase, south of St Petersburg.
Ukraine had not been very active in that region. Soltsy is 124 miles/200 km south of Putin's hometown St. Petersburg.
The Kremlin is pretending that this is not a big deal.
Moscow said that a drone was hit by small-arms fire but managed to "damage" a plane. Ukraine has not commented. The Tu-22 can travel at twice the speed of sound and has been used extensively by Russia to attack cities in Ukraine. [ ... ] It stated the location as "a military airfield in the Novgorod region", where Soltsy-2 is situated. "The UAV was detected by the airfield's observation outpost and was hit with small-arms fire," the ministry said.
The point is to make the Kremlin feel insecure and cause the Russian military to divert resources to protecting locations which were previously thought to be immune to attack. Soltsy-2 is about 620 km from Ukraine.
The location of this attack is directly related to Russia's terrorist attacks on Ukrainian civilians.
The Tu-22 is a Cold War-era, swing-wing supersonic bomber, codenamed "Backfire" by Nato, which has been used extensively in attacks on Ukrainian cities. Modern versions such as the Tu-22M3 can reach speeds of Mach 2 (2,300km/h or 1,430mp/h) and can carry up to 24,000kg of weapons, including "dumb bombs" and homing missiles. They have been used in conflicts in Syria, Chechnya, and Georgia and most recently in Ukraine. According to prosecutors in Kyiv, 30 people were killed when a Tu-22-launched missile hit a block of flats in Dnipro in January.
There is now one fewer Tu-22 (possibly two according to other reports) which can bomb Ukrainian maternity hospitals, schools, apartment buildings, and blood transfusion centers.
Russia is losing the war – but not fast enough. Give Ukraine whatever military hardware and weapons it needs except nukes.
The bottom line is that Russia has no fucking business in Ukraine. That's all anybody needs to know about this conflict.

Russia, a fossil fuel superpower, is experiencing significant heating issues this winter.
Thousands of Russians have been affected by heating systems failing across the country, including Moscow and its outskirts, the Moscow Oblast, as they face one of the harshest winters in decades. The wave of breakdowns started in December and shows no sign of stopping. This week, at least 16 people suffered burns in the city of Nizhny Novgorod when a large-bore heating pipe exploded, spouting boiling water into the street. The pipe failure also left more than 3,000 people without heat, according to a local news channel on Telegram. [ ... ] The most severe breakdown occurred in Klimovsk, a district of the city of Podolsk in Moscow Oblast, just 50 kilometers (30 miles) from the capital. On January 4, the temperature dropped to -34 Celsius (-29.2 Fahrenheit) — the coldest spell for the area in at least 40 years. On the same day, a Klimovsk heating plant failed. Some 20,000 people were left without heat in the district of 50,000 people. Thousands of them remained cut off from the heating grid for several days. Other cities and towns in the region also experienced multi-day heating failures during the extremely cold weather, with residents of the city of Elektrostal lighting bonfires in front of their apartment buildings as a sign of protest.
Putin has his priorities. The Brezhnev-era infrastructure in Russia is falling apart but he is still diverting resources to his 3-day 696-day "special operation" in Ukraine.
Experts warned that the heating network in Russia is poorly maintained and outdated — especially in the areas that have massively increased their population density since the Soviet times. Even now, some parts of the country still use decades-old steel pipes, well past their projected 25-year lifetime, according to Russia's The Bell outlet. Official figures cited by The Bell indicate that some 3% of the heating, water and sanitation network is labeled as being in a state of "emergency" every year. Still, only 1%-2% are being modernized, leading to thousands of breakdowns.
Putin gambled about who would "suffer" – and he lost.
Following Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, state propagandists issued dire warnings over EU sanctions on gas imports, claiming Europe would "freeze" without access to Russian gas for its heat. Nearly two years into the war, however, heating in Europe appears stable while Russian officials scramble to respond to the heating crisis. This contrast is pointed out with glee by Putin critics and Russian-speaking users from war-torn Ukraine. "They decided to freeze out Europe, but that didn't work. Then they decided to freeze their own to intimidate others," a YouTube user commented under a video reporting on the breakdowns.
Europe had already been increasing the amount of energy it gets from renewable sources. And after Putin's illegal invasion began, many European countries greatly decreased the amount of natural gas they import from Russia. Being less reliant on Russian energy has made Europe more independent. It's never a good idea to become dependent on neighboring dictators.
This report on people freezing in Russia is from UATV in Ukraine. You'd never get anything this candid about the Russian heating crisis on Russian state media.
youtube
Dictator Putin's invasion of Ukraine has only spotlighted Russia's shoddy army, its decaying infrastructure, its endless corruption, and its police state repression. If Putin was trying to demonstrate what a great world power Russia is, his invasion has only proven the opposite.

Russia smugly proclaimed a few years ago that nobody could shoot down its hypersonic missiles. Ukraine shot one of them down a few days ago using a US Patriot air defense system. 😁
Air Force commander Mykola Oleshchuk said in a Telegram post that the Kinzhal-type ballistic missile had been intercepted in an overnight attack on the Ukrainian capital earlier in the week. It was also the first time Ukraine is known to have used the Patriot defense systems.
“Yes, we shot down the ‘unique’ Kinzhal,” Oleshchuk wrote. “It happened during the night-time attack on May 4 in the skies of the Kyiv region.”
Oleshchuk said the Kh-47 missile was launched by a MiG-31K aircraft from Russian territory and was shot down with a Patriot missile.
The Kinzhal is one of the latest and most advanced Russian weapons. The Russian military says the air-launched ballistic missile has a range of up to 2,000 kilometers (about 1,250 miles) and flies at 10 times the speed of sound, making it hard to intercept.
A combination of hypersonic speed and a heavy warhead allows the Kinzhal to destroy heavily fortified targets, like underground bunkers or mountain tunnels.
Ukraine actually withheld news of this for a few days.
Direct from the Ukrainian Air Force Telegram channel:
Також оприлюднюємо інформацію щодо нічної атаки 4 травня! Близько 2.30 у небі Київщини ЗРК "Patriot" знищено аеробалістичну ракету Х-47 "Кинджал", запущену із МіГ-31К з території росії.
❗️Ще раз наголошуємо, військовим керівництвом було прийнято рішення не оприлюднювати інформацію про збиття Х-47 "Кинджал" системою "Patriot" ОДРАЗУ❗️ Причини цілком зрозумілі. На все свій час!
Rough translation.
We're also releasing information about the attack on the night of May 4th! Around 2:30 AM in the skies above the Kyiv region, a Patriot air defense system destroyed a Kh-47 "Kinzhal" aeroballistic missile launched from a MiG-31K over Russian territory.
❗️We emphasize once again, the military command made the decision not to publish information about the downing of the X-47 "Kinzhal" by the "Patriot" system IMMEDIATELY❗️ The reasons are quite clear. All in good time!
Yeah, let Putin waste more of his most expensive missiles before letting him understand they are now vulnerable to Ukrainian air defense. Of course, verifying that it was indeed a Kinzhal was important to the Ukrainians for the sake of accuracy.

« Like Nazi Germany, the Russian Federation will fail to re-imperialize. Its military is demonstrably mediocre, its economy is about as big as that of Italy or Texas, and its governance has become increasingly ineffective and unstable as elites begin to jockey for power in what they view as the rapidly approaching post-Putin era. The immediate future could be even worse, especially if the regime remains guided by the whims of a single autocrat and continues to discourage technological innovation and economic growth.
In a word, Russia’s imperial aspirations are dead, even if the Kremlin thinks otherwise. And the man who presided over their destruction is Putin. »
— Political Science Prof. Alexander J. Motyl at Rutgers University. Writing at the journal Foreign Policy. (archived)
Prof. Motyl has an implied warning at the end of the article...
In the absence of defeat, a militarily and economically weak and misgoverned Russia will remain in thrall to the ideology and attempt, yet again, to re-imperialize—all but certainly with the same results: failure, death, and destruction.
If Russia is not pushed out of Ukraine it will have learned nothing and may pursue the same course elsewhere – even as it continues to decline. Putin's Russia is a persistent problem which will not go away if we ignore it.
Ukraine is not slacking, it is doing the actual fighting in this war. According to Putin's plan, Ukraine was supposed to be in Russian hands by the end of February of 2022. It has held off the world's second biggest (if greatly overrated) military over 20 months. It just needs help with supplies and up to date weaponry.
We just got news of a Russian missile launching ship being taken out by Ukraine. 🇺🇦 😃
