ghost!will fic — a masterpost.

this is your apparition passes through me by me a.k.a vaguelyradiantwords

❝And so, forever began, in this place, in this time, in this moment. And that would last for a long, long time.❞

the december of 1922 began with a death. more specifically, the death of one william byers.

it is the most notable legend of the town, of course. the fifteen year old william, called will by his family, was found dead in his bedroom at half past five. there had been no sign of struggle or disease. a healthy boy of fifteen has dropped dead without warning. that's all the town seems to know.

though misleading or obscure the known facts are, it was the truth. it was not the whole truth however; as it so happens, will byers did not die. not exactly. exactly a year later, will finds himself as an apparition, haunting the same house he had died in. there was no end in sight for him.

until. a visitor, a century later. a boy with the name of mike wheeler and his family moves into the haunted house. after various attempts, mike and his friends, affectionately christened 'the party', find the ghost. their goal is to discover what actually happened that night one hundred years ago, and the curse that left will byers in this state; and how to break it.

author's note

fic title is taken from 'death with dignity' by sufjan stevens. this is quite a long fic, i estimate the final word count to be 60k+. there may be some triggering topics, all of the tws, i will mention in the chapter notes when they do come. though the characters may have some different romantic interests in the past, this is a byler endgame fic with a happy ending. angsty, the party-centric as well. hope you enjoy it :D

Max does as Mike says. Her knuckles turn white under the grip and all eyes are on the two separate words. Two sides of a dangerous coin. Yes or no? She takes a deep breath and closes her eyes. Her hand is already moving towards no, slowly. “Ghost –” her voice is fragile, “Are you really here?”

Will has one second to make up his mind. Should he give up this charade, let her flip to the safe side of the coin? Or turn to yes and let the chaos ensue. If Will had been perfectly normal, someone who just wanted a simple life; a mother and a brother who he loved dearly, mean schoolmates, he would have left it alone. Turn around, always the observer, never the participant. The world always moving around him, all he does is stand still and witness it all. Now, he has the ability to change it somehow. Perhaps not the world, but they would remember. And after all, could you blame him? He is mindlessly, impossibly, dauntlessly bored. Why not have some fun?

Mike hasn’t forgotten the probable ghost in his house. He tries to think about other things; his family and friends, what he wants to photograph, interesting books he has been reading. Recently, Mike had picked up a novel by Albert Camus called The Stranger . It is an intriguing read and he is familiar with Camus’ work, having read The Fall previously. And there is, of course, one line he has been staring at for long moments of time: I looked up at the mass of signs and stars in the night sky and laid myself open for the first time to the benign indifference of the world. He had read countless times, pondering over its meaning and depth. And even so, he always thinks of the sleepover, it’s always in the back of his mind. One part is always screaming, ghost! as it is some comedic ghost story.

But this is not a story. This is reality, and Mike is certain that there exists a ghost. He remembers the warning he had uttered to Nancy that night, you’re going to wish you believed me. And Mike is desperate , he must find the ghost, he must make sense of it. There is no logical explanation for everything that had happened then, there cannot be.

a fool's game : modern era hs au where the crows are hired by their principal van eck to steal the rival school fjerda high's mascot before the games. 6/? abandoned. tws of six of crows really. don't read this one, abandoned and i don't know how to even feel about this.

stranger things

i got your letter (hope you feel better than i do) : will gets sent a series of anonymous love letters in his locker. mike's been awfully quiet about this. 2/2, tw internalized homophobia. i don't really like this one but it's been very well-received so you can give this shot if you !

we both matter (don't we?) : mike asks max if she could go to California with him on spring break. that sounds like a bad idea, but she goes for it. el is unhappy in lenora; she is not in love with one of her first friends, but she is painfully in love with the certain red-haired skateboarder girl, who makes her laugh. 1/2 i have no idea if there will be a continuation? this was really good in my opinion, kind of sucks that it didn't get any love :((
