“ I have worked in a pharmaceutical environment for over 15 years, earning just over minimum wage. My husband works part-time as a general laborer and we have two young kids. When either of us gets sick, we either have to take time off without pay or work through our illness. We only get two weeks of vacation time for the whole year We support FIVE days of paid sick leave and more vacation pay.

“I have worked as a personal support worker and factory employee through numerous temp-agencies.
People hired directly by the company got paid more with better treatment. While other workers were given water, provided a lunch room and invited to Christmas parties, we were never afforded the same treatment.
Equal pay for equal work is important to respect all workers dignity. #148now.

“ Despite working full-time, my employer failed to pay me for over 100 hours of work. The Ministry of Labour made an Order against my employer. 4 years later, I still have not been paid wages I earned.I support strong enforcement!

“I have worked at low-level minimum wage jobs for the last 18 years. I have never been able to afford living beyond a rooming house, maintain a healthy lifestyle, or climb out of poverty, despite working 3 jobs at a time.
A low minimum wage means poverty!
I support a $15 minimum wage. #148now

“ I worked in various precarious work jobs for over 15 years. At one point I was suffering from bad health conditions. However, I was never able to get paid time off for the days I was ill under current laws. I was forced to work while I was sick or use my vacation days.
I’ll never forget the pain for working these days.
I support paid sick leave”

#Bill 148 Community Action
We would like to express our sincere gratitude for those who showed their support at our Community Action, #148Now at Queen's Park on November 16, 2017 and signed the online petition to Premier Kathleen Wynne. Together, we were able to show our MPP's why we need Bill #148Now!
Tumblr media
Even with the cold weather, we had over 130 attendees at the action including Toronto workers, Voices of Scarborough, several labour unions, community activists, clinic staff and community allies. At the action, workers and workers’ rights advocates spoke about why Bill 148 is so important to the lives of precarious workers, demanded stronger language in the legislation to better protect workers and to close loopholes that allow employers to exploit the working poor. Even Santa took a break from his holiday preparations to make a special guest appearance, warning our lawmakers not to be on his naughty list!
Toronto workers, Tamil Workers’ Network, and Voices of Scarborough leadership members also submitted petitions with over 1000 signatures along with a book of workers’ stories to send a powerful message to the Committee on Finance and Economic Affairs, demanding change, now. You can read some of the stories here: https://148now.tumblr.com/.
On November 22, 2017, Bill 148 will be entering its third reading.
If passed, we will see better protection for precarious workers.
It is now more important than ever to make sure that the government keeps its promises so that no one is left living in poverty. We need to remind our government that change is needed now.
We need to echo Santa's wise words and show our government that we want decent work now; stronger protections now, equal pay for equal work now, fair wages now - Bill #148Now!
If you have not signed the petition, please follow the links below:

Thank you to all those who supported workers in Ontario and participated in our Community Action.
