omg the HUGE disappointment and sadness i felt when they didn’t use the sci-fi/alien concept from the teasers in the actual dcm mv and promotions….. all of the build up and for what 😭???????? it was an AMAZING concept…. and they just let it go…… that’s why i have no expectations for red velvet’s upcoming cb (it’s VERY similar to shinee’s fake reality teasers). i don’t like the direction sm has been going. and it entirely sucks because they were the front runners in kpop for their concepts.

i’m still also very sad they let min hee jin (their art director for fx/shinee) get taken away by bighit 😤 that company is paying her for her worth and i’ll definitely be on the lookout for her future releases (she’s in charge of bighit’s new gg). but like…. she really defined sm and their looks. why did they think it was a good idea to let her go 🙄

the betrayal i felt when saw on twt that kibum said that "shinee means light, so it's just a reference to light it doesn't have to be connected to anything" about the fake reality teasers..............like kim kiBUM DON'T U FUCKING DARE. DO NOT. DO. NOT. i know he was probably trying to cover his ass because oh man whoever that creative director was was just taking any suggestion thrown at them and had NO clear thesis or overarching design. i'm so fucking glad someone got their shit together for atlantis and the repackage but they're still on thin ice. i am watching the rv teasers out of the corner of my eye because i am AFRAID. i agree i'm not a fan of sm's current direction for their groups, even though i think there have been a few good things in the last year and a bit. taemin, obvs, but he hired his own creative team for ndga and also probably for advice and it sure as hell paid off. i also really liked kyungsoo's mv, i thought it was cute and stylistically pleasant. kai blew my expectations for his solo out of the water which was a welcome surprise, even if the concept film was by far the most interesting visual element. i am actually of the (controversial) opinion that superm's styling + production is probably the closest current kpop has got to recapturing the bizarre theatricality of 1st and 2nd gen, even if it has been hit (tiger inside, 100) and miss (one). cowboy taemin surrounded by speeding cars........absolutely fucking INSANE galaxy brained idea. totally unhinged. i love every part of it. i don't keep up with nct that well because i haven't been that impressed by their concepts, although i did like the styling overall for kick back, but those boys look fancy and expensive in anything so it's not actually that hard to style wayv. i'm tentatively looking forward to ten's station solo because the teasers have been good and definitely feel taemin + kai approved.

i know she got poached by bighit and sm just let it happen!!! and they haven't even been using her that well...........sigh. i'm definitely on the lookout for her work because please....the styling this year in general has been all over the place, not just from sm lmao.

•Song That Got You Into K-Pop: Bae Bae by BigBang. I first clicked on Loser, I wasn’t feeling it completely but liked it enough to give them another chance so I clicked on Bae Bae, that one was on repeat for weeks.

(Idk... I think I might seem like an older kpop fan but I got into kpop in 2015. I’m one of those people who when getting into sth they really dig further until the origin of a thing, especially when it comes to music. So I know a lot about 1st and 2nd gen too, and I am mainly a fan of 2nd and 3rd gen bc I’m more around the same age as late 2nd gen - 3rd gen kpop idols, we grew up around the same time so I relate to them the most. For reference I am 2 years younger than Gikwang (late 2nd gen) and Yongguk (early 3rd gen), same age as Ken (early 3rd gen) and Sunmi (late 2nd gen). I heard about Kpop before 2015 ofc but i was in an industrial/obscure electronic music fase before kpop)

September SongFest: Kimg Jongkook x ATEEZ - Be My Lover release: August 2021 genre: Kpop

What's that, time for another Kpop history lesson? Yes, yes it is. XD This collab probably could use some background, so bear with me a bit.

The concept of Kpop idol generations can be a bit weird, especially since they're not always that clearly defined. 1st gen's start is under debate as somewhere between middle 1990s and 2003, 2nd gen probably starts around 2005/2006, 3rd gen about 2011/2012, and 4th around 2018/2019, with the Kpop idol industry as it exists now having really developed and bloomed in the early 00s. Of course genres and trends are much easier to define after the fact, so whether a group would have been referred to as idols back in the day or not (mostly not), those middle 90s pop acts are generally counted as 1st gen now. Which is where we introduce Turbo, a mid-90s duo with a hiphop dance aesthetic (as was common of a lot of Kpop boy groups at the time), and one of their more popular singles, Black Cat Nero (stage performance from 1996, featuring original members Kim Jongkook and Kim Jungnam). Indeed, "Black Cat Nero" became popular enough that when Immortal Songs 2 came around in 2020, ATEEZ sought permission to cover it for the show, earning themselves a standing ovation from Kim Jongkook in the process: ATEEZ - Black Cat Nero (Immortal Songs 2) (20200829). It was such a hit with fans, in fact, that for Halloween ATEEZ released an official performance video*, with Kim Jongkook ... and a storm of ATINY begging for an official release as a single ever since. Jump ahead to this summer and ATINY got their wish and then some. Pretty much everything about "Be My Lover" sends me right back to those early days, from the vintage-inspired fashions to the 'dance' moves to the sound of the song itself. Its simplicity is part of its charm, IMO. Yes, even with that damn air horn at 0:30. Plus this was the first big project since Mingi had announced his return, so seeing Seonghwa still doing rap lines was a surprise treat when the video came out. But then this video is full of those sorts of little ATINY treats - the WooSan content, Yeosang denying Seonghwa's heart yet again, Hongjoong's giggle, Jongho's high notes. And then there, on the single, was "The Black Cat Nero," just as fans had been hoping for months. Of course ATEEZ couldn't just stop here, no, of course not, but we'll talk about "White Love" later... ;) * because I regularly comment on how tiny label KQ shows up their seniors by routinely including English translations in CC on everything else they put up, I'll note that this music video is the one thing without a translation in CC - KQ specifically notes that they didn't translate "Black Cat Nero" to, in their words, "preserve the the musical elements of the original song." In fact, KQ felt strongly enough about it to put that note on the upload in English, Japanese, and Chinese, ahead of the usual media links. Although some digging suggests the song was based on an Italian nursery rhyme? I haven't looked into that further myself yet thanks to running out of day, but... Want to sponsor a song selection? Hi this is gonna to be long. I want to say why Starship artists always make me emotional? First it was Sistar disbandment and now Boyfriend with The Unit thing, I really hope they pass ;; Tbh I wasn’t sure why I was so emo about Sistar when there was other 2nd gens groups I used to like had disbanded. I knew Boyfriend since 2012 or 13 and love them a lot but I kind of quit because of so many jap schedules and lack of sub. (1/?)

Also when I have no one to chat with about Boyfriend, I kind of feel empty? And I didn’t know tumblr exist back then. I feel guilty for being like this ;; and I always change with other groups (sometime it’s about rude fandom so I left) Well I checked Boyfriend again after their comeback announcement and I was excited like? I missed them a lot and I do feel more guilty when I wasn’t there for them for their 1st win haha. (2/)

Boyfriend lead me back to their fandom and I’m here like “Omg stop attacking me.” This same thing happen to me with Sistar before their last comeback 😂😂😭 I want to rewatch Boyfriend’s old reality show but the quality is kind of suck and the list Boyfriend was in was removed from Wiki ;; I can’t remember who was my bia from Boyfriend when I was young but nowadays Jeongmin and Donghyun getting me heart attack the most. What do you think of Blackpink's latest song "As If Your Last." I did not particularly like it, it sounded kinda sort of too teeny bopperish to me(ironic coming from a teen). I mean I was expecting it to be more of a powerful song but it ended up a bit underwhelming for me, thousands of people may disagree. People seem to already be calling them legends, etc. and yes they are talented, etc. but it's a little too early in the game to tell, they only have 5 songs to their name; I think we 1/2

need to wait awhile for them to put out more stuff and show other sides/ “skill” I guess you can say to themselves before all of that. I think their concept this time was more on the “cute” side so to speak, I dunno.. Where do you see Blackpink going in the future? Not to be negative here, but knowing YG they might be victim to horrible promotions though he seems to be doing surprisingly well with them, for now at least… 2/2

Well first I’ll address your last concern: I have no faith in YG when it comes to female artists. Historically speaking, they are all disposable. Literally every single female artist to ever be under YG has been proven to be disposable. If CL wasn’t doing this US thing (or she wasn’t a visual who could act or model like Dara) she’d be gone I think. I do not trust that company when it comes to female artists.

As for the song, I don’t really like it. But I’m known for having songs grow on me months or weeks later. So who knows what the future holds. Like I said, I can literally hear which parts should be which 2ne1 member so I would be VERY surprised if it wasn’t a 2ne1 unreleased song (nothing wrong with that).

As for the people throwing around the legends title? Yes, it’s WAYYY to soon. The Legend title comes with time and achievement in my opinion. No group younger than 3 years has made it there yet. To me the legends are the 1st gen groups of course and now the 2nd gen groups (since they paved the way and have paid their dues). I feel like people are wearing out the word now and I HATE that because now when someone really does achieve something legendary (like BTS for example) now when people call them legends it’s kinda like “yeah, but so is everyone else since we’ve been calling literally any and everyone that” Same thing with “kings”, “queens” etc. When I first got into kpop there were very specific groups who were legends (BigBang, SNSD, Wonder Girls, SHINee, Suju,DBSK,KARA to name a few) and that’s where like you KNEW. Even if you didn’t listen to them. That was Wonder Girls, SuJu, and even SNSD until I warmed up to them (I saw one performance with what looked like 50 girls and stage and was like “Nope” then I found the “Gee” video a few months later after I had gotten more comfortable with kpop and I was totally into them). Even without listening to them I knew their legends status and multiple of their accomplishments and it wasn’t just “oh this groups is popular right now. They have a lot of fans and are topping charts right now”. It was a long list of accomplishments, awards, “firsts”, and some of those things are records that still stand until this day.

i know you’re expectin me to say map6 lol one i haven’t talked about on here is ses’ paradise. it’s really aesthetically pleasing and also umm??? fuck yes? 1st generation girl groups getting back together and releasing new music??? i very much support this concept. i wish it got more attention though. a hit from a 1st gen group getting back together would make it easier for other disbanded girl groups (4minute, 2ne1, wonder girls, and others from this dying breed of 2nd & 3rd gen girl groups) to come back in the future. i think that’s really sweet, and i also like that it was the members’ own decision to come back for their 20th anniversary this year. fuck man i’m really happy for ses.

Who do you think are the best male and female dancers in kpop? I ask this cuz i saw some poll about best male on twitter this morning and it was kai 1st and jhope 2nd and taemin 3rd i think. Which I dont agree with tbh. For me, best male is Yunho of tvxq and female is Kahi of After School (well not anymore but you know what im saying lol)

Ah, I don’t know enough about the old gen idols to really have an opinion on Yunho, but I definitely don’t think Kai is the best. He’s good but that’s just fan power. I really don’t know much about Jhope either. As far as Kahi, I don’t really agree. She’s very good yes, but I wouldn’t put her on par with Boa or Hyo. Maybe not even Nicole. This may be very reductive of me, but I feel like it WAY harder to rank the female dancers because they have such vastly different styles, while I feel like male idols are kind of expected to dance in a more similar way. I also didn’t include Luna because I feel like we haven’t really seen her just purely dance in so long that it’s impossible to see what her skill really is anymore. Yes, she’s obviously still a powerful and capable dancer and performer but if you go down to pure skill and technique, we don’t really know where she lies anymore. This is why I need Luna to get more dance exposure again, but I don’t really think it’s ever gonna happen. People are too obsessed with the new gen dancers and Hyoyeon. I think if people had to know her for something I’d rather it be her voice, because there are more opportunities out there to showcase it (if SM would give them to her).

Back to boy groups though. I definitely feel like BM and Shownu are gonna have to be included real soon though. Yugyeom also gets regularly overlooked.
