The aviation nerd in me is kind of disappointed that Sully didn't lead a rash of big budget Hollywood movies depicting other aviation incidents that made successful emergency landings with no loss of life, because there's a ton of amazing options:
There's Air Canada Flight 143 aka The Gimli Glider, wherein due to a botched weight/volume conversion and a broken fuel gauge a 767 ran out of fuel mid flight and had to glide into a landing at a decommissioned air force base/motorsports park
There's TACA Flight 110, which lost both engines due to liquid ingestion after flying into a thunderstorm and made an emergency landing a levee. The pilot flying, Carlos Dárdano, did this while only having one eye
There's British Airways Flight 009, which flew into an ash cloud created by the Galinggung volcano and lost all four engines due to the volcanic ash (the engines were able to be restarted later in the flight), and made an emergency landing in Jakarta. Potential for fantastic visuals due to the plane being surrounded by St. Elmo's fire while in the ash cloud
There's Air Transat Flight 236, which suffered a fuel leak over the Atlantic and glided to an emergency landing in the Azores. This flight holds the record for the longest glide of a passenger aircraft
There's British Airways Flight 5390, which is especially notable for having no deaths despite the emergency involving the captain being partially sucked out of the aircraft

I competed this weekend, for my first time, in the Atlantic Regional Motorsport Time Attack. Track conditions were ideal and the Mustang felt hooked up with lots of grip. My brakes performed well as I took greater risks in corners 3, 4, and 7. It paid off! I placed 1st in SGT2 and 3rd overall. Unfortunately, my best time of 1:17.3 was scrubbed because I put two wheels in the grass. It was the fastest time I ever set at AMP in my Mustang. I’m sure with more practice and a few more mods, I can shave another second or two. It was an awesome first experience where I got to push myself and be challenged. The cadre of participants were competitrive of course, but ultimately very supportive. Can’t wait for next year to go for a better result!

My 2 cents on the Vegas GP bc I can't sleep:
- I don't really have an issue with 3 races in the US. The US, as a country with a rich motor racing heritage, hosts a myriad of historical racetracks of high standards. But instead of making use of those readymade circuits, we have a track that is aspiring to give Sebring a run for its money on bumpiness, a stadium parking lot, and a street circuit. The opening of the US market is a wonderful opportunity to introduce the wider world to the beauty of American circuits and the quality racing they are capable of producing, not tourist postcard attractions with labeled corners.
- This may be total nonsense, but the words of the governor are giving me the vibe that he wants Vegas GP to be the new Monaco GP (in terms of glamour and prestige). First of all, Monaco isn't the most fitting track for current cars, so the racing isn't that great, but that's not the point. The point is that, with Monaco ceasing to be a standalone event this season and Vegas coming onto the calendar next season, I'm sensing perhaps Vegas will be (or attempt to be) on par with Monaco in terms of special events. I guess what I'm trying to say is that I hope Vegas doesn't become like Monaco, where what happens outside of the race is of more substance than what happens on race day. Nowhere else has Monaco's racing heritage to be able to pull it off.
- I think I would be delusional to believe historic European tracks won't be cut from the calendar. In fact, I would rather prefer it over 30 races, although it is not unlikely to have 30 races and less European circuits in a few years time. The removal of motor racing history and heritage from the calendar is sad to watch.
- A bit of tangential observation: Europe (FIA WEC) and America (IMSA) spent years working out a cohesive regulation (LMH and LMDH) to make racing more accessible across the pond. Phenomena like this represent the trend of motor racing becoming more global (especially across the Atlantic), with a key emphasis on the quality and cultural heritage of motor racing (shown in the endurance case: WEC constructors want to race in Daytona/Sebring, IMSA constructors want to race in Le Mans). It shows sacrificing racing heritage like historic circuits is not necessary for attracting new crowds; in fact, one may argue that these historic circuits are drawing said new crowd in.
- Going back to F1 and motorsports. The way to create and maintain viewership is through superb racing and professional race control on high quality circuits. Drive to Survive is all fun and games until the newly-inducted realise the lies and cracks in a gimmicky show. F1 shouldn't aspire to be widely publicised and widely ridiculed as a Netflix show.
- That said, Vegas can end up a great track and if it does so I'd happily eat my words.
- I know some Europeans care about time zone, but it's something most of us non-Europeans had to deal with for most of the season. Just as I don't believe F1 should specifically accommodate American viewers, they are not obligated to go out of their way to accommodate European viewers either. It is one weekend, and no one is putting a knife on your throat to watch it live.

So, in Brazilian environmentalism news, the Bolsonaro government, Rio de Janeiro state governor Wilson Witzel, and mayor of the state’s capital Marcelo Crivella plan to take down a forest named Camboatá in order to build a car racetrack. The Camboatá Forest, sized 194 hectares, is the only large stretch of Atlantic Forest (of which only 3% remains in Brazil) left in flat areas in Rio de Janeiro, sheltering endangered animals (such as the yellow-headed alligator) and animals that migrate from other parts of the country (like the sapiraia bird), serving a port for several others that transit between the surrounding forests, having a lake with huge water capacity that prevents flooding in the area, and helping alleviate the local climate.

A researcher and member of a local opposition group criticizes the study of predicted environmental impact made by the company that wants to build the racetrack, Rio Motorsports, saying it only accounts for 11 of the 20 endangered species in Camboatá. A prosecutor says the study doesn’t account for the impact of the real estate projects the company has in mind. Another prosecutor says the study lacks hydrogeological diagnosis and that there were pending issues in the process, such as the question of explosives that would still be on the region's soil, used by the Army’s installations nearby. The Public Ministry has claimed there are inconsistencies in the study. Rio Motorsports say that they will create a forest garden and plant more than 700 thousand trees to compensate for the deforested area (Camboatá has 200 thousand trees), and that the race track will generate new jobs and tax collection and that the economic impact would be almost R$ 30 billion (~US$ 5.49 billion). Local opposition groups ask for the track to be built nearby and for Camboatá to be used for green businesses.
The Public Ministry also argues that an audience about the topic must take place when the covid-19 pandemic ceases and the public health situations goes back to normal, saying that remote means for an audience to happen wouldn’t permit the necessary discussion and participation by interested citizens, as well as mentioning the stoppage of deadlines for administrative activities on environmental topics. Supreme Federal Court Dias Toffoli had previously decided that the audiences could continue and that he thinks the Court shouldn’t decide on local administrative topics.
A virtual public audience with no deliberative and decision-making disposition was held on August 12th 2020, lasting for 5 hours and with 402 participants and 160 questions. The Legislative Assembly of the state of Rio de Janeiro was scheduled to vote on August 20th 2020 on a bill that would annex the Camboatá Forest to a nearby conservation park, turning it into a protected area, but after a heated discussion and four amendments, the discussion is to be resumed this week. A petition for the track to be built in a nearby area has been created.

Day Unknown. Friday. Sep 25. 2020.
I'm not dead! But my battery is.
Riding up to Fort McMurray, through to see the Giants of Syncrude - old massive mining machines by the roadside.
ABS light comes on. Weird. Maybe something to do with the new tires. Should fix with a restart.
Dashboard display turns off. Worrisome. No speedometer, gas level etc. But I don't need those immediately. Start looking for someplace safe to pull over.
There isn't any. I'm on something locally known as 'Supertest hill'. A very long climb. It's three lanes wide, with no shoulders, and a deep several meter dirt ditch slanting down the right side. I realize if I crest the hill, I'll be virtually invisible to anyone making their way up it, so I make the judgement call to pull over as far as I can maybe 300 yards before the top.
The road edge is loose dirt and gravel, I have trouble with footing to stabilize the bike and get the kickstand down. I turn off the machine. Wait a few. Turn it back on. The display reappears, but not as bright as usual. I press the starter. The display vanishes and the starter makes a few weak clicks.
Shit.
Well. I thankfully decided to bring my emergency booster. Almost hadn't because it's very heavy, but added it back in at the last second. Dismount, unhelmet, dig it out of the tail pack, hook it up, wait. My cigarette lighter socket USB charger/voltmeter reads around 10. Usually it's around 12. 14 when running.
I get it back to about 11.6 and decide to try my luck. It starts! I rush to repack my tools and put my gear back on. I get on the bike and notice the voltage is dropping. Try to go and... Dies again.
The sun is starting to set and I am in a BAD location. Time to call CAA.
I don't know if I just need a Boost (bad battery? End of life? Unable to handle the extra drain of the phone/gps and the new chain oiler?) or a full on Tow (where to? There's no motorcycle shops on her list. The tow driver can't let me ride along because of the pandemic. How do I get back? Where do I go?)
The tow company calls me. He suggests 4G Motorsports, a Can-Am and Ski-Doo dealership. It's that or a Harley place. 4G, please. He is currently on a tow and will be here in about an hour.
I have a reflective vest on, but I'm standing on the ditch side of my bike for safety. There are no road lights. And obviously my hazards don't work. A few semi trucks come uncomfortably close as they struggle up the hill in the growing dark.
I shift the vest to drape over the tail luggage, and abandon attempting to boost the battery, using the charger instead for its blinking flashlight feature, pointing it down the hill and activating the three pulse flash.
Nothing to do but wait. Behind me, over the forest, a pillar of smoke wafts high into the night sky. The stars are out. At least it isn't raining. Each time a vehicle approaches, I brace, praying they see me and shift away from my precarious position.
I glance back to the forest and notice the smoke pillar has warped and shifted, and there was other light glowing overhead.
Oh, shit.
It wasn't smoke at all.
I'd finally found the Northern Lights.
I tried to enjoy the show, in between tensing as trucks surged past, as the green band stretched and wriggled through the planet's magnetosphere, or whatever the correct term is. Pictures proved elusive, as single snaps resulted in too dark an image to share the sight, and iso delayed shots would lose the definition of the individual bands of particles. But that didn't stop me from trying.

I'd love to be able to relax and enjoy the show some night, but at least I got this.
The tow service arrived, EMI - Eastern Mechanics Inc. Kind young gentlemen, the driver from Nova Scotia, came to work the sands like so many young people of the Atlantic provinces. The local hotels have a monopoly on shelter, so the prices were all upwards of $120 for the night, and me facing an undefinable repair bill. That and the night was already half over - no discount for only using a room for four hours. I assured him I'd be fine.
The tow pulled in about ten minutes after, same driver, different buddy. We unload the bike, they refuse a tip (thank gods, I'm so stressed about finances), and now I'm alone. 4G opens at 9am on Saturday, so I do the logical thing and set up my bivy next to the bike at the edge of their parking lot. The Aurora is gone, but I was too exhausted to watch the skies any longer anyway.

The consummate promoter, Ax broadcast his in-car camera on his facebook page for the entire weekend. Did you see the excitement... Constantly battling in the lead pack, Ax would bring the Hot Betty’s / Race 4 Hunger / KnackerPower Mygale Honda home P3, P4, and P3. Alongside Ax in the F1600 tent, Omar Khan gains more valuable points with 3 - top 15 finishes.

With the FRP series running with Historic Sportscar Racing (HSR), the opportunity for Rick Wark to join the team for the weekend in his IndyLights car and Kirk Kindsfatter doing double duty in the Swift 014. When the time came for the Weathertech Sprint Race - Kirk would come home with a class win, and Rick would climb the podium as well in P3.
