Below are just a few of the brands that deserve a reputation, but there are more.

Ed-tech apps spy on kids

When schools switched to distance learning amid the lockdown, it represented a chance to rethink education and ed-tech, from lessons to schedules to evaluation.

For the most part, we have squandered that chance, doubling down on the most destructive educational practices.

This is true across the board, not just in ed-tech. Take the bizarre start-times for classes - as early as 7AM for students enrolled in "period 0" classes. This timing has nothing to do with best practices in pedagogy or our understanding of adolescent brain-development.

Instead, it's a least-worst option arising from the US's unwillingness to treat high-quality child-care as a public good that benefits both kids and working parents. We open our schools at o-dark-hundred because parents need to get to work.

This, despite the fact that the majority of teens' body-clocks shift nocturnally as they go through puberty. We know that waking kids up early hurts their learning outcomes, but we accept that tradeoff because the alternative (kids whose parents can't earn a living) is worse.

Virtual schools represented an opportunity to shift education to more humane hours, but we blew it. And that's the least of our failures, barely registering in comparison with the way that we failed to fix ed-tech even as it grew to eclipse all other pedagogical questions.

Exhibit A, of course, is "remote invigilation," the spyware that we force students to install on their computers in the name of preventing cheating on the pedagogically bankrupt high-stakes tests we cling to.

These tools are force-multipliers for the destructive power of high-stakes testing: their junk-science "sentiment analysis" facial recognition algorithms can't recognize dark-skinned faces, forcing Black kids to sit tests with multiple lamps shining directly in their eyes.

Students forced to use tools like Proctorio are expected to rotate their webcams 360' degrees to prove they're alone in a room at home - which means that poor kids who share a room (or can only get wifi in the parking lot of a Taco Bell) are penalized for poverty.

Unsurprisingly, a company that would knowingly torment children in this way is run by terrible people and behaves terribly. It's not just that the CEO doxed a child who complained about his products on Reddit:

The company has also abused copyright law to sue and intimidate its critics, including a student security researcher who revealed defects in the company's products:

The fact that businesses that profit by spying on children are run by awful, awful people is no surprise.

One of the most established ed-tech categories is censorware, which schools are required to install as a condition of receiving federal funds, under 1997's CDA.

This software captures every student's click and search-term, and often their chats and emails, and spies on all of it, using arbitrary word-matches and human classifications to block kids (and teachers) from seeing materials deemed "inappropriate."

The premise of this exercise is that somewhere there is a boiler-room full of prudes so large that it can look at billions and billions of webpages and decide which ones are and aren't "child-safe" and that an "AI" can pass judgment on the pages they haven't got to.

Even if you accept that bizarre premise, remember: this isn't an editorial process, it's a surveillance system. It's one thing for a school librarian to make decisions about which books to shelve, but this doesn't require them to spy on everything every kid tries to read.

For censorware companies to block your kids' data-requests, they have to intercept and examine them. Censorware is spyware. Given that, it's worth asking, "Who are we allowing to spy on our kids?

Terrible people, as it turns out.

The school censorware industry is a subsidiary of the global censorware industry, and its largest clients aren't schools - their bread and butter is the tyrants of the Middle East and former Soviet Union, dictators who buy their products to keep their citizens in line.

These are the depraved human-rights abusers we get to spy on our kids (they also provide censorware for corporate, hotel and airport wifi!), and you know what? They've got *terrible* judgment.

Independent audits of their blocklists show that they're blocking about a third of the top search results for terms related to the common curriculum, with overblocking skewed heavily to women's health, reproductive health, and LGBTQ (no surprises there).

And, like Proctorio, these censorware companies have a long history of intimidating and harassing their critics, abusing copyright law to prevent independent analysis of their blocklists in a bid to make it impossible to test whether they are any good at their jobs.

We've been spying on schoolkids' online activities since 1997, and the pandemic only accelerated that process, and not just through test proctoring, either, as a new report from the Me2B Alliance shows.

The report analyzed 73 mobile apps that 38 schools in 14 US states were using as part of their administration and instruction and found that 60% of them transmit student data to commercial data-mining companies.

The apps were built using "free" SDKs from Facebook, Google and other surveillance companies; these SDKs make it easy to build apps quickly, but they also harvest the app users' data at scale and subject it to long-term retention and analysis.

Ios devices were far less likely to harvest user data than Android apps, but 1 in 4 still spied on users, and on both platforms, "95% of third-party data channels... are active even when the user is not signed in and that these apps send data as soon as the app is loaded."

Here’s chapter two, in which a truce is struck, crude jokes are made, and we learn more of Peeta’s childhood.

Chapter Two: Embers

His commander had gone into the city for the night, leaving the crew on standby at the docks. Their ship, lovingly named The Bloody Rose, needed tending and Peeta, an exhausted soldier running on three hours of sleep, needed a drink. He longed for a pint of proper ale. Not the bitter swill that the ship’s cook had distilled.

A chilled autumn wind whistled through the harbor, jostling netted shrouds and furled sails. The white and blue flag of Sjorkden snapped proudly above the crow’s nest where Thomas Jaclin quietly kept watch. There was a muted hush about the night, as if the world were holding its breath in anticipation, knowing something was about to happen. At this point, with his chores done and nothing left for him to do except lose another round of cards or go off to bed, Peeta wished something would.

He was nursing a cup of moonshine and chatting with his friend, Yasser Pjengo, when they heard the sounds of a scuffle. He and Yasser crossed the deck and looked down onto the dock that the ship was moored to.

There, struggling to drag someone up the gangplank, was the commander.

“Commander on deck!” Peeta announced with all the authority he could muster, hoping his voice carried down to the lower levels to rouse the men from their games. Peeta had only recently been promoted to lieutenant, and he was going to prove he deserved it. He felt a rush of pride swell within him when the crew emerged from their sleeping quarters, blinking both the mist of alcohol and the gleam of gambling from their eyes.

Commander Snow was of medium height with a thick beard and hard blue eyes. Though the hairs at his temples were gray, the way he carried himself was young. He spoke softly but commanded the kind of respect that caused listeners to lean in and catch every word. He now dragged a young girl with him onto the ship. Her red dress was torn and low cut, revealing the hollow between her breasts. A few strands of hair had been pulled from a tar-black braid to hang limply in front of her face. She had a blooming bruise on her jaw and a cut above her eye but otherwise seemed unharmed.

“Men! Say hello to our newest addition. From what I’ve seen so far, she’s sure to be a feisty one.”

Some of the crew had laughed and hooted, including Peeta, but the girl snarled as she twisted and spat in the commander’s face. In return he sent a heavy punch to her gut, causing her to whimper and double over in pain.

“I have to warn you all. This here is no ordinary witch. She’s a Heartrender.”

Peeta sucked in a breath and felt a chill pass through the assembled crew like a breeze passes through dead grass.

“A Heartrender…”

“One of her kind cursed my uncle. Turned his feet backward.”

“I heard they could snap your neck with a flick of a finger.”

“They don’t just stop hearts. They cut them out and eat them.”

Peeta had heard of Krellian Heartrenders. The rarest of the witches, Heartrenders could use their magic to manipulate bodies: peel the flesh from bone, collapse lungs, knot intestines, burst eyes in their sockets. He could only imagine what she would unleash upon them if her hands weren’t locked into those metal hand caps.

Snow cleared his throat to quiet the men. A hush fell over the deck.

“I see you’ve all heard the stories. If you let her out of those shackles, we’re all dead. I want at least one guard on her at all times.” His eyes shifted to Peeta in the front row. “Mellark, you take the first watch. Gerholt will take over at midnight, then Dawson, then Pjengo. This will be a rotating schedule. You’ll all get a chance with her before this voyage is over.” He twisted her arm, throwing her into the semicircle that Peeta and the crew had formed around them. She collapsed onto her stomach, a wilted heap of red dress and chains. “Now get her out of my sight.”

Peeta and a few others bent down to lift her up as the commander retired to his quarters, but she swung out her arms to ward them off.

“Don’t touch me,” she spat in Krellian.

“Get up and walk or I’ll drag you, witch. Your choice,” Peeta growled. His accent was thick, but he knew by the way her nostrils flared that she’d understood him.

She stayed crouched on the ground, her metal covered hands in her lap.

Peeta’s anger erupted.

“Fine,” he snapped. He wrenched her off the floor, threw her over his shoulder, and listened to her screams the entire way down to the brig.

During their slumber, the witch had commandeered his arm.

She lay sound asleep, his bicep propped under her cheek like a pillow. He only awoke when his hand had gone numb, the blood trapped, circling and pricking within his fingers like a swarm of wasps scrabbling to get out from under his skin. He watched the subtle rise and fall of her chest, the pulse that fluttered at her temple. She looked peaceful. Almost innocent. But he knew what she was really capable of.

Her head smacked the ground with a dull thud when he took his arm back.

“Ow!”

The witch glared at him as he massaged the feeling back into his palm. She made it a point to rub the tender spot on her head dramatically so that he’d feel bad.

It didn’t work.

“Get up,” he rumbled.

The witch turned over and curled in on herself. “Five more minutes.”

He rose from the nest of furs, grabbing one and wrapping it around his waist to cover his nakedness, then moved to sweep the curtain out of the doorway. From the watery yellow sun high in the sky, he determined it was noon.

“Get up,” he growled again, injecting more anger into his tone. “We need to keep moving.”

“Why? We found shelter,” the furry lump on the ground said.

“If we want to find civilization we’re going to have to move. We need to get home as soon as possible.”

She turned on her side and rested her head in her hand. Her eyes gleamed like freshly polished silver in the light pouring past the curtain. “You’re letting me go home?”

“I meant my home,” he corrected, allowing the curtain to fall and shrouding them in dusk-like darkness once more.

There was a tense moment where both knew the time to act was upon them. Either kill the other or let them live. Both were risks. If Peeta killed the Heartrender, he’d be left to fend for himself. There’d be no magic to keep his blood warm. But if he hesitated and let her live in the hopes that he could return her to Sjorkden and have her tried for witchcraft, there was a chance she’d kill him down the line. It would be so easy to reach out and crush her windpipe, deaden those bright eyes, neutralize the threat. She may have magic but she couldn’t weigh more than a hundred pounds soaking wet. Peeta had height, strength, and military training on his side. He was arrogant enough to assume the odds were in his favor.

He thought she was thinking along the same lines because she eyed his muscles warily. He was broad-shouldered and obscenely muscular, the product of a decade doing hard physical training at the academy. She couldn’t crush his heart if he lashed out and stalled her hands first. He may be heavy but he was surprisingly quick. After all, he hadn’t become a witcher for nothing.

She pursed her lips as if considering something. “I think we’d both sleep better at night if we made a truce.”

He laughed and shook his head. “Your word is as valuable as a campfire is to a fish.”

She scowled slightly, a deep line forming between her furrowed brows. “This isn’t a promise that I’ll never harm you, just as I know you won’t agree to never harm me. You are a witch hunter after all. Bloodshed is your life. But let’s make a pact that until we make it out of this, we help each other.” She paused a beat and looked away as if ashamed. “After that, all bets are off.”

Peeta had nodded, but this truce didn’t mean he trusted her to stick to it. In fact, it made him even more suspicious of her. What kind of demon agreed to the drawing out her own demise? He thought her gamble unwise and surmised she had some angle to play against him. He’d have to be especially careful from here on out.

They faced away from each other and put their clothes on quietly. She still wore the red dress, the one from The Bloody Rose. It looked looser on her now, but the sleeves were elegant, poufed at the shoulders, and fitted down to the wrists. The skirt was still full, even after she had spent so much time sitting in her cell and thrashing about in the sea. She would have looked ready for a party if the dress wasn’t so dirty and torn.

She caught him watching her and winked. “Like what you see?” She twirled and the skirt flared like the petals of a blooming rose, twisting and shimmering in the low light.

Peeta grunted as he did the last button on his dusky blue jacket. His undershirt was still damp against his skin. “It doesn’t fit you where it counts.” He gestured towards her breasts.

She had snorted then, happily surprised he was loosening up.

They set out with empty hands, only having the clothes on their backs and the furs wrapped around their shoulders. The witch had taken a liking to the black one. She stroked it between her thumb and forefinger like a child would clutch to a blanket for comfort.

The briny scent of the sea permeated the air and even so high up as they were on the cliffside, Peeta felt the fine spray of the waves collect on his cheeks. The constant rushing of wind blew his hair back and whipped the fur about his shoulders.

They had been walking for hours when the witch asked, “What do you miss most about home?”

Peeta wished they could just be quiet.

“A bed to myself.”

“Right,” the witch crowed wickedly. “I can feel how much you hate sleeping next to me. I felt it pressing into my hip last night.”

Peeta’s cheeks flushed scarlet. He had never been with a woman. He was a member of the Order: chaste until he earned his talisman and won the right to choose a wife. For his service to the Order he’d be allowed the hand of a nobleman’s daughter. Pretty, young Sjorkden maidens with hair of palest gold and soft, supple bodies. Daughters of the nation raised in the ways of womanly charm and domestic knowledge, basket weaving and child-rearing, dancing and singing and carving.

He had been dreaming of what his future wife would look like, what their first carnal encounters would entail, the holy honor in producing a child. As a father, a former witcher, and the husband to a woman with status, he would be granted an official seat on the council of Rjaka. His first solid foothold on the ladder of power. It was a lower rung, but it was a start. If only he could get back to his post and fulfill his service, then he would be given his freedom and permitted to marry.

Those dreams, full of glory, sex, and fatherhood, were the source of his arousal and frustrations, not the witch’s soft skin against his body. Her deep complexion and ebony hair were not of Sjorkden. Her lips were too large, her nose too wide, her body too slender and bony. She looked as if she had spent years scrounging about for meals, with ribs and hips that protruded like sticks in a canvas bag. He liked rounded women with pillowy bosoms, not scrawny little birds.

Or so he told himself.

“Why do you say such lewd things?”

“Because I can. And because I like when you turn red. It does wonders for that pale complexion of yours, valkrӕlla.”

Valkrӕlla.

Barbarian.

“You’re disgusting.”

“You like it,” she teased and continued walking, swaying her hips beneath the cloak of fur clasped at her throat and sweeping a glossy curtain of hair over her shoulder. Even here, in the permafrost fields of the tundra, she still smelled of moss and jasmine, as if the misty forests of Krell dwelled within her pores.

Peeta scowled. He hated her. He hated her for what she was: an abomination, a demon sent to tear at the fabric of the natural world. He hated her for making him want to laugh. He hated her for being so brazen and sensuous and everything the women of his country were never allowed to be. But mostly he hated her because he realized he didn’t hate her.

Not even a little bit.

They walked in the hopes of finding a fishing village, or maybe a trading outpost, somewhere with an inn they could stay at. But as the day dragged on and the sun dipped precariously close to the sea, Peeta started losing hope. The witch stumbled behind him, making her way over embedded boulders and paling tufts of dead brush sticking out from the snowbanks. She squinted against the burning red sunset staining the landscape in bleeding color.

“Maybe we should head back,” she said, though they both knew this wasn’t an option. They were many hours from the whaling camp and turning around now meant they’d just be back at square one, with no food and no fire.

Peeta hadn’t been hungry last night, but his adrenaline had burned off, leaving his body weak and watery. He salivated at the thought of rosemary crusted mutton and boiled potatoes, buttered peas in ceramic crockery, honeyed mead, and angel cake with lemon filling. What he wouldn’t give to be back in the vast stone dining hall of the academy, laughing with Yasser through full mouths of meat and drink. After a feast, all the boys would tell stories in large circles or spar each other for prizes. Peeta had been one of the best hand-to-hand fighters among his peers and as such had accumulated a treasure trove of their makeshift awards. The wishbone of a chicken. A fork with a bent prong. A pearl someone had found in an oyster. When he had tired of winning, he would climb the stone steps to his dormitory and sleep dreamlessly on a goose down mattress. He’d wake to the rising sun and Yasser’s deep snores and know that he’d have a day of training ahead of him. Advanced lessons in combat, weapons handling and upkeep, survival skills, sailing, and instruction on foreign languages. He was a well oiled hunting machine, as he was raised to be by the masters.

But that was the past, a boyhood he would never return to. Peeta was a man now, and nobody was coming to instruct him. He was on his own.

Well, not entirely. He looked back at the witch. Her skin glowed deep bronze in the fading light and her dark hair whipped loosely about her angled face. She caught his eye and winked.

No, he thought grimly. I am not alone.

Peeta had only been seasick once. It had been his first time on a ship, sailing from his birthplace to his new home. As the other boys “oohed” and “aahed” at the gray stone towers of the academy rising up from the mists, Peeta had vomited over the banister.

The others had made fun of him for it. Groups targeted him in the corridors, tripping him or pulling on his hair. Others mocked him, knocked him down hard in training, and then pretended to retch dramatically as he struggled to his feet, fighting to hold back tears. They called him ‘Greenie’, for the color of his skin on that first voyage.

It was better than ‘runt’ but he still resented himself for it, ashamed he had shown weakness. He trained hard after that, alone if he had to. Classes would be over, dinner would be served in the great hall, but the masters would find him in the training rooms practicing his punches on a dummy, or throwing knives, or moving through his stances with a blade. The hours of solitude paid off, and once the students were old enough to compete for rank in the sparring circles, no one came close to Peeta’s brutal technique or raw ferocity.

And after he broke Geoff Tonson’s leg, no one ever called him ‘Greenie’ again.

Peeta climbed down into the bowels of the ship, feeling the slight sway of the ocean lapping against the hull as he descended. The Heartrender had been on board for two weeks now and hadn’t earned her sealegs. He shriveled his nose as he came upon her cell. The acrid scent of vomit filled the compartment.

“Time to switch?” Wilhelm asked from his seat in the corner.

Peeta nodded. He hated guarding the Heartrender. She was in her own cell, isolated from the other witches he and the crew had captured. At least when you guarded the others you could eavesdrop on their conversations. It wasn’t much, but it was something.

Wilhelm Larone, a fresh-faced recruit on his first-ever witcher voyage, rose and stretched languidly. He hadn’t been able to grow a full beard, but his top lip held some promising peach fuzz. “I thought a Heartrender would be more entertaining,” he said, his dark eyes sparkling as a thought occurred to him. “Hey!” He rattled her bars. “Lift up your dress.”

The witch slumped in the corner, her skin waxy and coated in a film of sweat. Her hair was matted and oily. She blinked slowly at the wall and ignored Wilhelm’s racket.

He sighed like a disappointed child at the zoo. “I thought the commander said she was feisty.”

“That was before she had vomit on her dress,” Peeta said dryly.

The witch responded to Peeta’s voice, turning her head slightly to watch him between lanky strands of hair. A chill ran down Peeta’s spine at the intensity of her gaze. They hadn’t spoken since the first night when he had thrown her over his shoulder and dragged her into this very cell, but she remembered him.

Peeta tore his eyes away.

Wilhelm had placed his foot on the lowest step, moving to leave when she croaked: “Water.”

“When was the last time she was fed?” Peeta asked.

Wilhelm turned, a confused look on his face. “I don’t know. Ask the commander.”

“At least get her a cup of water before you go to bed. We want to keep her alive for the trial.”

Wilhelm smiled wickedly. “I have a better idea.” He jumped off the stairs and sauntered over to the Heartrender’s cell once more. “You thirsty, witch? Here, drink up.”

Peeta watched in horror as Wilhelm unbuttoned his pants and began pissing through her cell bars. Wilhelm’s eyes, which Peeta thought were too far apart in his head, darted up to the older man’s face. “You owe me two gold pieces if I can get it in her mouth.”

The witch made a strangled sound of disgust and tried to move away, but she was already in the corner. There was nowhere to go and her dress was soon soaked a deeper red.

“That’s enough,” Peeta said, but Wilhelm’s stream only grew stronger. “I said that’s enough!” he barked and shoved Wilhelm away.

In his surprise, Wilhelm sprayed the wall. “Damn, Mellark. It's a joke. Dawson’s right. You are no fun.” He shook the last drops of piss from his cock and then stuffed himself back into his pants. He turned to the witch and winked. “Maybe next time you can drink straight from the source. If you promise not to bite of course.” He then fixed his uniform and lumbered up the stairs. Peeta watched him and his half-mustache go.

“Krą khiăh,” she whispered after the creaking of Wilhelm’s steps faded.

Thank you.

“I didn’t do it for you,” Peeta snapped. “It was unsanitary, and your kind deserves hellfire, not some quiet death on a ship.”

Peeta spent the remainder of the night sitting on the chair in the corner, breathing in the scents of piss and vomit and misery. He hid his annoyance when the witch started sobbing.

But the next time he reported for guard duty, he brought her a cup of water.

What is Self-Care to the Wellesley Community? [Follow-Up]

A few weeks ago, we raised the question about what specifically self-care is in the context of hashtags and Instagram photos of bubble baths and face masks. In response to our call for the W community at large’s thoughts, here are some of the responses we received:

What do you consider self-care?

To me self-care involves making improvements to my life that will benefit me long-term. Allowing myself to stay home (saying no to outings); exercising and having a gym membership; going to therapy and taking the time implement new strategies; working towards taking my experiences seriously - medical, romantic, appetite, mood, etc.

I see self-care as the steps we take to become ready to confront and destroy the systems that hurt us, rather than as a way to navigate and further support those systems. Saying NO. Specifically because I am the kind of person who instinctively says "yes" to everything. Sometimes because opportunities seem exciting, often because I feel a sense of obligation to my work, my family, my friends, etc. But I end up exhausted, overstretched, and depressed when I do this, and also I immediately let slide my health, my eating habits, and my sleep (which to me are the fundamentals of "self-care"). So as painful as it is, learning to say no is one of the biggest building blocks of "self-care" I am trying to learn.

Self-care means prioritizing my healing and doing things that help me connect to myself, my loved ones, the communities I belong to, my ancestors and nature-most of these don’t require money; sitting at my altar, hiking, dancing, yoga at home, having dinner with my chosen and blood fam, game night, listening to music, going for a walk. Self care also means doing things to counter the harms of the daily capitalist, phobic and ist day. So if most of the day requires isolating myself at the conputer in order to “produce” then laughing with friends helps me counter that.

To me self-care is ensuring that everyday I workout, go for a walk during work hours, spend time with my dogs, eat well and drink lots of water. Self-care is the daily care of my body, mind, and my soul. When I can I call long distance friends and go hiking but those are not everyday tasks that I am able to do so in order to cope with everyday life I need to make sure that I am consciously taking care of myself.

For me, self-care is about carving about spaces/times where I can fully be myself. So much of my life is spent reading the room and figuring out who I need to be and when, withholding or censoring parts of myself or identity depending on who is present. Anytime, I can be 100% me, person who watches Love & Hip Hop and Basketball Wives and also owns every Hanson album 1997 to the present, feels both liberating and like self-care.

What do you think of the #self-care trend?

The capitalist co-opting of self care is honestly embarrassing. The idea that you can reach wellness just through buying things is harmful to us all, but especially poor folks. Plus, the #selfcare trend was at points a way that I got in the way of dealing with my own mental health. When dealing with depression, I would say that self care meant laying in bed all day and skipping responsibilities. This isn't self care, it's self destruction. Self care on a bad day looks like taking a shower and making sure I eat, not making excuses for my worst impulses.

I appreciate that self-care gives me a way to name and confront the ways that capitalism harms me, and (as above) to recognize myself beyond my capacity to produce labor. at the same time, capitalism has already weaponized self-care as complacency. I don't think there's anything wrong with recognizing and meeting your own needs, but there's a pretty sick and tidy irony in the way that capitalism hurts us, then exploits recovering from that hurt as a market, then tells us that participating in that market is enough to fix our problems. Commodified self-care is just coercive, performative femininity by another name, marketing ways for women to feel that they are failing to do and be enough. the solution is, of course, to purchase products and display conspicuous consumption. Just as we're not going to ~save the environment~ through taking shorter showers, we're not going to overturn capitalism or confront systemic issues by buying commodities. self-care has become an aesthetically-packaged set of the master's tools. speaking of Audre Lorde, I also think it's worth underlining that a revolutionary black woman did not come up with the concept of self-care as political warfare, for wealthy white women to co-opt it as a way to excuse ourselves from the fight.

As a mental health provider, I’m glad that it is something that has become so much a part of our awareness that it has a hashtag. Like anything in this culture, the tendency is to commodify it, though. I try to encourage folks to think in terms of your 5 senses and choose one thing that will bring pleasure to one of those senses as a simple mindfulness exercise. Self care shouldn’t be cost prohibitive.

I think 99% of it is bogus capitalism. Its aim is to create a new market, commodifying things that people have already been doing, moralizing and monetizing them. Claiming selfishness as an excuse to engage in consumerism is fucked up. Yes we need to care for ourselves - but vanity and selfishness are actually bad (hot take). I think that there are many strategies that people can employ to help them deal with a variety of personal struggles, but they do not have to be commodified under the umbrella of #selfcare. Additionally much of what we deal with in our lives is due to systemic wrongs, things that cannot be fixed by a face-mask or manicure. Face-masks and manicures are not bad, but they're not good either. Drawing attention to personal changes feels like a neo-liberal cop-out to real systemic change. It feels like a collective shrug emoji - well, we can't fix the economy so we might as well do this juice cleanse.

It is very linked to creating an aesthetic and beautiful self and life. That is bullshit - beauty is not good. Humans don't have blemish-free skin, and we shouldn't have a 7 step routine that burns our flesh to try. Dieting framed as self-care falls in the same category. Juice cleanses, Whole30 diets, #cleaneating etc are not actually healthful, and are thinly veiled moralized body control tools.

Blood on the dance floor : Only Lovers Left Alive

In James Jurmusch 2014′s Only Lovers Left Alive, Eve ( Tilda Swinton ) and Adam ( Tom Hiddleston ) play vampire lovers who seem to be searching for more than blood. Tom is a rockstar who can’t seem to get back into the groove of doing things. It is not directly said in the movie but Tom shows clear signs of depression ( or is it just vampire behavior?) . Eve decides to travel from paris to detroit to comfort and try to get him out of his funk. Everything appears to go smoothly until Eve’s younger sister Ava ( Mia Wasikowska ) shows up causing a ruckus and ultimately killing Adam’s friend Ian (Anton Yelchin). This results in Adam moving to Tangia with Eve where Adam does respark his love with a new instrument but due to their wise vampire friend Marlow (John Hurt), they are without blood and finally park-take in vampire festivities.

I would first like to start off by talking about the production of the movie as a whole. The use of birds eye view/overview camera angel is immediately established at the opening scene.

This angle is formally called Aerial shot and is used when directors want to establish not only the character but the world around them. In this scene Jurmusch appears to use the angle to give us some indirect characterization of the two: Eve is surrounded by books and draped in a robe signifying she is probably the knowledgeable and spiritual one and Adam is surrounded by music and instruments so he may be the creative yet “ troubled” one. Showing how both worlds come together. The music that is being played ( “Im going down down down, my head is spinning around and around”) also goes along with the angle shot and helps establish that there may be conflict for the characters together or apart.

The fact that the writers did as best they possibly could to not make this a cliche vampire movie is worth speaking on. Throughout the movie, they don’t seem interested in being the regular vampires and overall have a moral compass. Often in vampire movies you see them blood sucking anyone what comes in contact with them but this doesn’t seem to be the case for them. I thought it was interesting that they didn’t kill someone for blood until the end of the movie. Adam critiques humans a lot to Eve but when encountering with them , he still humanizes them & himself carries on like one. There was an actual conflicts in this movie that wasn’t tied to being a vampire. Like i spoke on earlier, Adam had shown clear signs of being depressed from his music. He often blamed on the human’s for the feeling but i truly do think it may have been him being a vampire.

Could it be the fact that he’s been alive for centuries and his love for art isn’t as strong as it was? New artist emerging and he can’t take it? Eve makes a very interesting comment to Adam saying “ How do you live so long and still don’t get it?” I seen this as a potential theme because it eternal life doesn’t mean eternal knowledge or even the fact that no matter who or what you are in this world, you’re still going to be trying to figure things out. Adam scolded humans for not knowing but in actuality, he was looking in the mirror and maybe he wasn’t so different as he thought. The tangents can go on just from those thoughts alone. This is what makes the movie unique with the fact that you kinda have an idea of what’s going on but it’s left up to you truly to decide what it is.

Another thing to note wardrobe choice. In the Jenni Miller article Q&A: Costume Designer Bina Daigeler on Only Lovers Left Alive Vampire Costumes, Dressing Tilda, & More , she was able to sit down with the costume designer

What sort of ideas did Jarmusch approach you with about the costumes — what did he want them to look like, what did he want to avoid?

I think he was looking for something [without a] specific period, with very simple and clean lines. At this moment, the vampires don’t really care about the clothes, you know? They lived [through] that in all other periods, so they [wear] something very simple but protective … On the other side, of course, they are like animals. They have their second skin with their clothes, and that was a little bit my idea — that it’s like the second skin they got during so many years of living. They’d already lived all the fantasies they could live … so it could be something very, very simple.

I thought the part about them already have lived their fantasies was interesting but i do feel like their color choices did play a role While in Tangia, you can see Eve wearing nice garments but once he comes to detroit , she wears the same white often and Adam wears all black. This could be signifying Eve bringing purity and life to Adam’s dark time

Overall, Jurmusch does an amazing job of telling a modern and far-less stereotypical vampire story

SECHSKIES, starts their first promotion in Japan after comeback. “ We want to show 20 years’ worth of experience to fans in Japan.”

SECHSKIES is the legendary group from the 90′s which has carved out its name in the history of Korean popular music. SECHSKIES has joined YG Entertainment, which has many talented artists, such as BIGBANG, PSY, WINNER, and iKON among many others. After a successful comeback last year following a 16-year hiatus, SECHSKIES has finally announced that they will be branching out to Japan. For the first time, they are releasing their album, “THE 20TH ANNIVERSARY -Japan Edition-” in Japan, and holding their own first fan event,”SECHSKIES JAPAN FAN MEETING 2017.” What are their thoughts on their first Japanese promotion following their comeback in 16 years? Here’s the interview with SECHSKIES. ―― How do you feel when you look back on time since SECHSKIES’ comeback? Jaeduck: I’m happy that I can spend time with my fellow members and Yelkies (the name for their fans).

Jiwon: My heart flutters everyday. I want to go back to how I felt in the very beginning and meet with my fans.

Jaijin: I’m nervous, but I’m enjoying it.

Suwon: Everyday I spend with my members is always fun, and I still can’t believe we’re together with our fans.

Sunghoon: First of all, I’m happy to be with my fellow members. And, I’m even more more more happier because I feel like I’ve become a family with our fans.

―― What did the 16 years between disbandment and comeback mean for each of you?

Jaeduck: It was a really good and precious time in my life.

Jiwon: I think it was a good time for me personally, pursuing my solo career in music and Korean variety shows.

Jaijin: It’s too long. How can I describe the 16 years? It’s difficult.

Suwon: I was doing my solo activities while eagerly pursuing music. But I’ve always thought about SECHSKIES.

Sunghoon: I cried, I laughed and experienced many things. I think it was time for me to become an adult.

――Please tell us if you think something has definitely changed as you transitioned from 20s to 30s.

Jaeduck: I feel that way when I try to handle various situations wisely without losing my original intention.

Jiwon: Physical strength has changed, of course. But my mental attitude and passion are unmatched by any other.

Jaijin: Yes, physical strength. Ultimately, physical strength has declined compared to the past. (laughs)

Suwon: Physical strength and elasticity of skin. (laughs)

Sunghoon: My mind wants to “work harder” than before, but the sad thing is that my body doesn’t follow (laughs).

――Can you describe the view from stage at your Yellow Note concert last year?

Jaeduck: The massive number of yellow balloons in sight was impressive.

Jiwon: I felt like I went back in time to 20 years ago on a time machine. I was very happy because I felt like I’ve become one with our fans.

Jaijin: Black? Because of the condition of the lighting, I have an impression of the concert hall being very dark. (laughs) But it was beautiful.

Suwon: It was a concert where we could feel much love from our fans who’ve waited a long time.

Sunghoon: I have a memory of feeling as if I were lying in a bed of forsythia* (*Translator’s Note: Yellow flower that represents SECHSKIES fans).

―― How do you think the Korean music scene has changed after SECHSKIES’ disbandment? Did you feel any anxiety about going back to the scene?

Jaeduck: I guess various genres have been loved by many people. I felt uneasy about taking the challenge and going back tthe new Korean music scene. But, it was okay because I had my fellow members, YG, and our fans.

Jiwon: Music with catchy hooks dominates the scene. But SECHSKIES wants to preserve our own color.

Jaijin: Yes, I was anxious, but I trusted and relied on YG.

Suwon: To be honest, I was anxious. I worried about what music style we should pursue for our comeback. But after signing contract with YG, I had trust in YG’s producing, and enjoyed preparing our new album.

Sunghoon: I guess we’ve changed to a pop-like style. I am not anxious.

――After signing with YG, did your music production style or musical activities change?

Jaeduck: First of all, I have pride. I also thought I should make more efforts.

Jiwon: We did it in a very free and open atmosphere probably because we were working with Hoobae* musicians. (*Translator’s Note: Hoobae means someone with less experience in work, school, etc.)

Jaijin: I don’t think anything has changed in particular.

Suwon: YG is very systematic, and cares about various things from the artists’ perspectives, which is why we get high-quality albums.

Sunghoon: I feel like wearing new clothes. There was sensuous change toward refinement.

―― 「SECHSKIES-THE 20TH ANNIVERSARY -Japan Edition-」 album has been released in Japan. How do you feel?

Jaeduck: I’m palpitating. I feel good.

Jiwon: My heart is pounding fast.

Jaijin: I’m moved. Dear fans, please look forward to our promotion. I’m excited.

Suwon: I never expected doing concerts and promotions overseas. I am very pleased.

Sunghoon: It hasn’t hit me yet, but I’m grateful. And I’m enjoying it.

――Is this your first time singing in Japanese? How did you feel about singing your song in Japanese?

Jaeduck: Yes, it’s my first time. It was hard getting myself used to the lyrics, but I tried hard to express the right emotions for my part.

Jiwon: Mine is the rap part, so I really focused on conveying the message in the lyrics.

Jaijin: I can pinpoint that the part “うらんだでしょ(Urandadeshou, I blamed)” was difficult. The pronunciation of “ うらんだ (Uranda)” was hard.

Suwon: It’s my first challenge. I’m still not used to singing in Japanese. I’m paying attention to the pronunciation, but I think I should make more efforts.

Sunghoon: I’m still not used to this, but I hear that it sounds somewhat attractive.

――Do you have a Japanese lyric that you like?

Jaeduck: I like the part "今 (ima, now)” as a word and as a lyric.

Jiwon: “ 約束(yakusoku, promise).” I like the word “promise” in Korean, as well. And I always try to keep my promise.

Jaijin: It’s the "ごめんよ～ (gomenyo~, I’m sorry)” part.

Suwon: It’s the "平気じゃないことわかってるけど最後まで僕は見勝手で ( Heiki ja nai koto wakatteru kedo saigo made boku wa mi katte de , I know you’re not okay, but I behave as I please till the end) part. Because it’s my part (laughs).

Sunghoon: "永遠にそばにいて (eien ni soba ni i te, Please stay with me forever)” part has a nice message.

――SECHSKIES has decided to hold fan meetings at Yokohama (July) and Osaka (September). What do you want to show your fans?

Jaeduck: I want to show them myself enjoying stage and speaking good Japanese.

Jiwon: I want to show them not Eun Jiwon on stage, but Eun Jiwon as a person.

Jaijin: We’ll show you a great stage and great dancing.

Suwon: Let’s show our fans 20 years’ worth of experience and something much cooler than Japanese idol groups.

Sunghoon: Friendly aspects of SECHSKIES and real Kang Sunghoon?

――Please tell us if you already know some Japanese words.

Jaeduck: Let’s go together.

Jiwon: I love you. Gambatte (Keep trying your best!). You seem well.

Jaijin: Even a monkey sometimes falls from a tree.

Suwon: May I please get some water? How much is it for 2, 3?

Sunghoon: I love you. ――What are your interests in Japan? Is there anything you want to do for your next visit, or something you enjoy?

Jaeduck: Fashion, people, design, food, etc. I want to see a lot of stuff and feel various things. I want to broaden my view.

Jiwon: Clubs, games, figures, anime (Japanese animation), and manga (Japanese comic books).

Jaijin: I guess food?

Suwon: Food and fashion. I really enjoy strolling in the streets of Harajuku, Omotesando, and Aoyama.

Sunghoon: I don’t normally drink, but I want to drink nihonshu (sake) in Japan. I also have interest in Teppanyaki and other gourmet foods.

――What does it feel to have fans waiting overseas?

Jaeduck: I look forward to seeing what future will unfold.

Jiwon: I’m very amazed. My heart is full of gratitude.

Jaijin: My heart is pounding. I want to show us fast.

Suwon: It still doesn’t feel real. I want to feel it on stage soon.

Sunghoon: I think it’s a mix of mysterious feeling and excitement.

――Finally, SECHSKIES will be promoting in Japan. What are SECHSKIES’ charms?

Jiwon: Please look forward to seeing SECHSKIES, back with a new look!

Jaeduck: Each of us has a vivid personality. We are doing strict self-management.

The shopping for groceries experience is a life-or-death activity for Americans. Sometimes, the shopping experience includes that I will be confronted by some famous person at the store, and when that happens, things become very real... I have been confronted by Ted Nugent, Robert Duval... ========================= Incoming call from American Medical Response assassin cart drivers just now. Thursday: 1:10 pm. The AMR cart Driver service is sponsored by the Oregon State Government assassination squad in Salem Oregon from the offices of Kate Brown, Governor. ========================= ... Sarah Palin; Kid Rock; members of the cast of Cheers; members of the cast of The Office; Shelley Long; George Wendt; Barack Obama (during his tenure); Dick Cheney; Ann and Nancy Wilson more than once; Sarah Huckabee; Ted Danson; Jay Leno; David Letterman' Slash; Axle Rose; and a variety show of others. If the truth ever is found, there will be a large collection of snuff movies that shoe a fight with various weapons between myself, and some famous asshole who has a team of assassins to help kill me, except that in these snuff movies, it will be shown that a lot of famous people are dead and were killed on film in a "Celebrity Death Match" that backfired. Today, right now, there are at least one hundred very famous SAG members who are indeed deceased, yet somehow, continue to live, and entertain. Tom Petty was one such person associated with Celebrity Death Match Snuff Movie making service. Mr. Petty died recently, last year, for the second time. If Tome Petty were to be famous for his most outstanding achievement, it would have to be that he is a man who managed to die twice. Two times. Duplicate Death Service. He died once in about 2010, and he died again in 2017. It must be a miracle. With that said, today, there are a number of famous people who are dead, yet still entertain, and for all intents and purposes are alive and well. In other words, there ar a lot of impostors in the SAG who will also die again someday. Ok, well I did not intend to write about all of that, but there you go. Do what ever you like with the information. I wanted to write about observances at the Wal-Mart. At Wal-Mart, there is a men's clothing department. In the clothing department there are pants for sale. There are a lot of pants at the Wal-Mart, all hanging neatly on the racks for dispaly... dys-play... The pants on the racks are size 40 waist and above. There are a few pairs of pants that are 38 waist. And a couple, two, three, 36 waist size. In a sea of pants, hundreds of pairs of pants, there are no size 31, 32, 33, 34, waist size pants. None. Zero pants in the men's clothing department that will fit any normal sized man. It has been that way for many years. They have excuses when questioned about it. The excuse is that all of the pants in normal size have sold out, and these are what is left, that I should come back and try looking again later after a new shipment arrives. =================================================== Pissed-off rant complete with cuss words and throwing of objects. =================================================== All they have available at the Wal-Mart is World-Wide-Pants. Hello? Anyone? Doughnuts and coffee? Popcorn and Jujubees? How about a Tonight Show Coffee Cup with Jay Leno's Autograph on it? How about David Letterman's Autograph? What if they just signed it instead? Would you do some ant-terrorist work then? Dickhead, yeast infected Virginia! Agent Smart... agent 86. Agent 99. Chaos. Now is a real good time to do some anti-terrorist work. The very best and most helpful way that agents from Langley could help, is to step the fuck out of the way, have fucking doughnut so you can fit into the available pants at the Wal-mart, and let the US Military do what they do... There are never any normal size pants. I know why there are no normal sized pants at the Wal-Mart now. It's because that in Socio-terrific Dystopia, here in Oregon, no one needs to purchase pants. The terrorists get what they need given to them. The clothes are handed out as needed by the soldiers. The normal size pants are taken to the church, most likely the one on 9th street in Grants Pass, and distributed to soldiers there. No one needs to purchase food either, instead, soldier Seventh Day Adventist Screen Actor Guild Vatican terrorists have private buffet, they can go there and eat whatever they want twice per day. But no buys food at the store. Anyone attempting to purchase food, clothing or anything at all at the Wal-Mart will be marked as an outsider and singled out for extermination services, like I have been. In the women's clothing department. There are isles and isles of shelves and racks stacked way up high... of braziers. There must be 10,000 Braziers available at the Wal-Mart in every shape, size, configuration and color option imaginable. There are so many braziers, because all of the American Women have been exterminated. Dead women don't use braziers. and that is why they have so many. They have to keep the inventory at the store a certain way so that it does not raise concerns with corporate offices, so, they still have to order more braziers, even though there are no breasts for the braziers to support. The terrorists have killed all of the American women, and no one cares. No one ever answers the cries for help... no one cares. If anti-terrorist agents would go there, to the brazier department and pick up a few bra's, then, they could take those bra's to their favorite movie actress or rock star, or public official and get a FUCKING AUTOGRAPH put on the braziers they take. 5th blog post YAY! Again I would love to thank everyone who had liked my Innisfree no sebum mineral powder blog, 100 likes and counting. I'm so amazed at the amount of attention I've been getting I'm very grateful, I've had some lovely conversations with some friends here on Amino I'm just amazed at how lovely everyone's been so THANK YOU 🍑

I thought I should let my friends (all of you) know about my personal skin care routine! DISCLAIMER: I am by no means a skin care expert, I do whats been working for me, it may not work for you but it does work for me. At the moment I'm still testing things out, I mean I'm still using a westerner eye cream and I am in hope to find an amazing Korean one! So if you have any recommendations please let me know and they will go on my wishlist, Thank you in advance!

Okay, let's get started!

ＢａｃｋｇｒｏｕｎｄＩｎｆｏ:

I do wear makeup nearly every day as I'm working or I'm at school. I love makeup and feel the need to do it every day (don't judge I do it for me, not for anyone else, I enjoy 'painting' my face). But I do have to say after a long day I'm hyped to take it all off, best feeling every.

Just info on my skin type too, I have an oily T-zone (nose, cheeks forehead and chin) cheeks and the surrounding of my face is dry too. I have past acne scarring, which has faded and not a big problem. I have small pore which I treat every week with a mask, I don't do any nose pore strips nor do I use that tool that brings the sebum out, I just leave it. I do suffer from acne ( I'm only 17, I'm a teen so I'm not threatened by pimples, I'm still young!) which I never pop my pimples, I leave them to do it thing and I have somewhat sensitive skin, like super sensitive to acidic masks (*caugh lemon).

01.Ｂｅａｕｔｙｗａｔｅｒ

I first start off with a Beauty water, taking my eye makeup off first, ensuring everything off. I know this is a westerner brand, in all honesty, this was like my first 'skincare' product I ever got, I've been using it for the last 3 years!

Product: Simple Kind to skin micellar cleansing water.

How: I usually put some of the water on a cotton pad and softly wipe my eye makeup off, ensuring that everything is taken off before going on to the next step.

02.ＯｉｌＣｌｅａｎｓｅｒ

Secondly, I use an oil cleanser, I always use a water-based cleanser around my eyes as oil cleaners seem to make my eyes foggy (?) and I hate that. Everyone knows this brand, I personally like it. The oil does get my foundation off my face while not being harsh which is a benefit!

Product: Banila co. Clean is zero (original)

How: Using a spatula, I grab about a 10c coin amount and rub it into my face, I usually message it in bringing it down to my neck. I usually do this before I go into the shower so when I'm in I run warm water and wash the oil away, it turns almost milky.

03. ＷａｔｅｒＢａｓｅｄＣｌｅａｎｓｅｒ

The third step is cleansing all of the oils off, I usually use a foamed based cleanser which I know isn't the best to use as foam cleanser can spread germs, but like I mentioned before it works for me and I haven't practically broken out from using a foam. I usually wash my face with a foam cleanser in the shower which is easiest for me.

Product: Innisfree Green Tea Cleansing Foam

How: Squeeze as small amount of the product (10c coin size) onto wet hands and rub onto a wet face massaging it into the skin ensuring that all of the oils and makeup comes off, wash with warm water.

Another great foam cleanser is the Innisfree Jeju Volcanic Pore Cleansing Foam!

04. Ｅｘｆｏｌｉａｔｉｏｎ

I usually exfoliate about twice to three times a week. It really comes down to how I feel, if I've worn thick makeup that day or I feel the need to exfoliate, I never do this too hard just enough to ensure that I've softly scrubbed the dead skin away.

Apologies for the dirty packaging its been in my shower, where I usually keep it as I do most of my cleansers!

Product: Skinfood Black Sugar Perfect Essential Scrub X2

How: I usually (as mentioned) do this in the shower, so I grab a small amount and water it down a little bit before i softly scrub over my face washing the srub off after scrubbing my face for 50 seconds to a minute.

ＡｎｏｔｈｅｒＥｘｆｏｌｉａｔｉｏｎＭｅｔｈｏｄ

Now and again i change it up and use a peeling gel, which i feel can provide better results, i defently see and feel the difrence afterwards.

Product: Holika Holika Lazy & Easy Egg Smoothing Egg Peeling Gel

How: Squeeze a small amount onto hand and rub into face and watch how your dead skin forms into little balls, wash away with warmish water.

05.Ｔｏｎｅｒｓ

I actually love toners, they have actually help with my past acne scarring and seem to balance my skin's redness! Plus toners make your skin feel as soft as a babies bottom.

Product: Skinfood Black Sugar Perfect First Serum in Light

How: I usually shake some into my hand then I pat it into my face and neck. If I'm feeling fancy I'll pour some onto a cotton pad and swipe all over my face and neck.

06.Ｓｅｒｕｍｓ

I actually just started using serums as I was kind of lost as to what they do, but honey can I tell you I'm so happy I tried it. My acnes has healed up a tonne (still have some left but it's fading which is positive) and my pores seem to be smalleer (not that they were big, to begin with). My skin legit drinks this in, i love it!

Product: Innisfree Green Tea Seed Serum

How: Like the toner, i pump two pumps into my hand and dab (please don't) into my face and neck.

07.ＥｙｅＣｒｅａｍｓ

Eh, I I'm sorry I don't have any Korean products to show you but this is what I've been using for the last 5 months, I'm looking for a Korean eye cream so if you have any recommendations I'll be highly grateful.

I know I'm young (17) but I still hope to keep my under eyes hydrated, that's all. I don't care about bags or darkness I just hope for them to be nice and hydrated.

Product: Olay Anti-Ageing Eye Cream

How: I lightly dip my finger into the cream and light tap it around my eyes bringing it onto my lids.

08. Ｍｏｉｓｔｕｒｉｓｅｒ

I've had a hard time trying to find the one (not that I've had a massive look around) and I've just started using this again, I say again because I started using it about 1 -2 months ago and I started to break out. I want sure if it was something else (as I was trying other things) or it was this product. Well, I confirm that this wasn't the problem. I've been using it the last 3 - 4 days and I haven't broken out and it seems to do the job, not sure if it's going to be great in winter. It's summer where I am right now...prays.

Moisturisers I've been using for 2 years or so, I was so bad with my skin before. Definitely, notice the different in just hydrating my face!

Product: Etude House Moistful Collagen Cream

How: I spoon a little on my hand (clean) and dot it around my face then I rub it in (not too hard) and round my face bringing it down to my neck.

ＥＸＴＲＡＳ

This section is just other things I do now and again, spot treatments, mask, sleeping mask etc.

ＳｐｏｔＴｒｅａｔｍｅｎｔ

I usually use two things, I know one of them is a little harsh but for me, it works and it doesn't leave scarring.

Product: Thursday Plantation Tea Tree Oil Antiseptic

How: I usually put some tea tree oil on a q-tip then apply to the risen pimple before bed, in the morning I make sure to wash my face.

Product: Nexcare Blemish Clear Cover

How: Peel off a sticker and place over a pimple, let that stay one overnight and in the morning peel it off, carefully. You can actually see all the junk come out off onto the sticker, ew!

ＳｈｅｅｔＭａｓｋｓ

Sheet mask does wonders to the skin, you can get all different types brightening, moister, pore tightening etc. I usually use mask 2 - 3 times a week depending on how my skins feeling and looking.

I've been using sheet masks for the last 1-2 years, these were the first skincare items I had even before moisturisers. I use to get mine from The Face Shop, the only Korean place in my city. I love them so much.

Product: Olive Young X DreamWorks Sheet masks (Fav: Kung Fu Panda)

How: After toning your face place one of these onto your face and leave for 20-30 minutes afterwards pat what's left into your skin.

I do switch between sheet and clay mask every week, for me sheet masks are something that quicker and easier and clay mask are something I use when I'm not busy and have time to sit down.

These masks are popular and everyone knows them, I personally love these two the most out of clay mask that I've tried.

Product: Innisfree Jeju Volcanic Pore Clay Mask

How: I use the little spatula (that was in my ELIZAVECCA Carbonated mask review) and put a good amount into my hand then I spread it onto my face and leave it for 30-35 minutes. Afterwards, i wash it off with warm water and pat my face dry.

Product: Elizavecca Milky Piggy Carbonated Bubble Clay Mask

How: Using a spatula I spread onto my face and let it bubble for 5 minutes, then I wet my hand a message my face for 2 minutes, washing it off with warm water.

Now and again when five had a busy day and haven't had the time to put a sheet mask or clay mask on, then ill stick with a sleeping mask. These are great for something quick to use.

How: Apply a thin amount on your face before bed. When you have awoken wash this off with the little bit of water and notice how squishy your face is.

How: Put an appropriate amount into hand then spread over wanted dry area on the body, it's not oily so it's okay for wearing during the daytime !

But as played by Mary Lattimore--in long, looping, droning, aimlessly explorative passages--it seems more suited to a sort of purgatory than the commonly-accepted concept of heaven. Please don’t mistake--this is no charge of a lack of beauty. At The Dam is suspended in a state of all-encompassing bliss that is true paradise for the non-progressive spiritualist, a static instrumental meditation in fully-present grace. It simply never feels like it exists at any sort of end or is even working its way towards any sort of end. It lacks the finality and intentionality required for passage into “heaven.” It is simply a collection of singular, infinite dazes that start and stop within themselves constantly and at indeterminate points, totally devoid of time concept, relinquishing its blessed listeners from the tyranny of destiny. -SM

20) Wei Zhongle - Nice Mask Over An Ugly Face (Pretty Purgatory, August 15 2016)

“Hungry freaks, daddy!” Outlandish Chicago four-piece’s latest mini-album is a substantial swerve to the left incorporating a deranged funk stent in their avant-folk primitivisms. The result is early Liars dipped in Hawaiian Tropic tanning oil or maybe a mescaline-rationed Brandon Boyd trapped in Bollywood Park. The finest outcome, though, is that Wei Zhongle’s wry outsider sensibility invites this kind of indulgent miasma of reactions. Nice Mask Over An Ugly Face is a 19-minute-clocking deviant wail of euphoria. -JD

19) Battle Trance - Blade of Love (NNA Tapes, August 26 2016)

Blade of Love is a striking force that evokes the power of nature--primal, elemental, raw, traversing extremes of delicate beauty and chaotic dissonance. Through seamless and inventive use of extended techniques, a quartet of tenor saxophonists (!!) perform lone takes that cut straight to the heart. How this album succeeds at touching on a very human and emotional level is a testament to the strength of composer Travis Laplante’s vision. -DA

18) Savoy Motel - Savoy Motel (What’s Yr Rupture?, October 21 2016)

Savoy Motel’s debut release has the choogle of T Rex’s Electric Warrior but slimmed down, teeth bare and extremely high. Fronted by Cheap Time’s Jeffrey Novak, this young supergroup of new-Nashville scene veterans refreshingly lacks the clearly inflated ego of most current Nashville bands. Taut funky rhythm guitar from Mimi Galbierz (Heavy Cream) is topped by pleasurably decadent wet-noodle fuzz leads by Dillon Watson (D. Watusi) and, while chunky drumming from Jessica McFarland (Meemaw/Heavy Cream) keeps it all moving, her vocal contributions threaten to upstage the whole show. Novak’s songwriting is as strong as ever and he coos with the sleazy charisma of a cult leader. It turns out, however, that the charming boogie of his newly recruited band is what makes Savoy Motel his most interesting project to date. -DA

17) Anderson .Paak - Malibu (OBE, January 22 2016)

Here is another hard-working veteran getting their due. However from the perspective of an uninitiated mainstream music listener, it seemed like Anderson .Paak was everywhere, out of nowhere, in 2016. The premiere voice on both of NxWorries’s fantastic Stones Throw 2016 releases, as well as a featured guest on The Blank Face LP by Schoolboy Q and the (probably-should-have-made-this-list) new album from A Tribe Called Quest, .Paak gets his propers from us for his sophomore effort as a lead artist, Malibu. A highly-enjoyable listen, Malibu showcases .Paak’s talents as a singer, songwriter, producer AND drummer across a catchy collage contextually themed (in the spirit of his 2014 debut, Venice Beach) around the beauties and tragedies of his Southern Californian lifestyle. -SM

16) Huerco S. - For Those of You Who Have Never (And Also Those Who Have) (Proibito, April 26 2016)

Recent Brooklyn-by-way-of-Kansas City transplant Brian Leeds is the experimental electronic producer known as Huerco S. A few years of vacillating between ambient strictures and a sturdy leftfield techno preoccupation led to April’s For Those of You Who Have Never (And Also Those Who Have), one of 2016’s finest experimental pursuits. A monument to headphone meditation therapy, on For Those of You…, Huerco S. discovers the personality of compounded textures and their vibrant and natural ability to express rhythm independently of traditional percussion. For Those of You… is a sonic immensity elegantly fashioned from the frailest but most voluminous strands. -JD

15) The Avalanches - Wildflower (Astralwerks, July 08 2016)

All of the mixed reactions over The Avalanches’ return after a 16-year gap between records caused Wildflower to get a bit lost in the shuffle last year. Though there seems to be a faint pulse of Big Beat resurgence in the air, Wildflower barely seemed to raise an eyebrow. Perhaps we didn’t have enough time to digest the extensive 21 tracks or we couldn’t humor the romping joviality amid the looming sociopolitical fears. Context aside, Wildflower wields some of the best electronic pop tracks of the year. The symphonic collages are buoyant, sunny, beach blanket sensations strung together by chutes and ladders of soul samples. The hope is that our outlook will improve enough at some point for us all to appreciate them. Or, as The Avalanches might suggest, it may require a move to Australia. -JD

14) Jackie Lynn - Jackie Lynn (Thrill Jockey, June 10 2016)

Haley Fohr/Circuit Des Yeux’s outlaw alter-ego Jackie Lynn is confident and smooth; a futuristic cowgirl crooner who’s almost nostalgic yet clearly malcontent and on the move. Playful synthetic beats and softly twanging guitar creating a welcoming world crowned by Fohr’s distinctive voice and rich storytelling. With the expert assistance of the Bitchin’ Bajas bizarro Wrecking Crew, this album is Circuit Des Yeux’s most finely produced work. Jackie Lynn is steely cool but something dark is off here. She has the aura of David Bowie’s character in The Man Who Fell To Earth. Before you can unravel the secrets of her story, she is gone. Hopefully, though, we will hear from her again. -DA

13) Moor Mother - Fetish Bones (Don Giovanni, September 30 2016)

Camae Ayewa, aka Moor Mother Goddess, aka Moor Mother on her 2016 breakout Fetish Bones, beats around no bushes with her poetry. She decries police brutality, systemic racism and the centuries-deep plight of black people over dense bouts of percussive noise. At times, the sonic qualities recall art-punk and Bauhaus-inspired noise-rap outfits like Dalek and Death Grips, at other times the harshest industrial pulses of My Life With The Thrill Kill Cult and Pigface. A hard-working organizer and leading voice in Philadelphia’s underground/DIY scene for some time, Ayewa’s partnership with Don Giovanni Records combined with the cultural climate of 2016 generated a massive audience for her far-from-easy-to-digest music, earning Fetish Bones highlights in major publications like Rolling Stone and Pitchfork. No argument here; certainly one of the most important documents of the year. -SM

12) Solange - A Seat at the Table (Columbia, September 30 2016)

If 2016 was the year the icon died, it was also the birth of a new class of artistic leadership. A Seat at the Table is Solange’s graduation from pop chanteuse to soul royalty. With the humble empowerment of the opening lines, “fall in your ways so you can wake up and rise,” Solange identifies the timeliness of spiritual and emotional guidance. Her melancholy on “Cranes in the Sky” is material and her romantic navigations on “Borderline (An Ode to Self Care)” are erudite and virtuous. Solange’s register, moreover, is one of calm contemplation. It, in combination with A Seat at the Table’s delicate pulse of piano-led modern R&B is a gracious statement of purpose and a firm plea for empathy. -JD

11) Africans With Mainframes - K.M.T. (Soul Jazz, May 06 2016)

Longtime Chicago orbiters Noleian Reusse and Jamal Moss (aka Hieroglyphic Being) blast into the Soul Jazz universe with a relentless acid house hardware assault. As driving and exploding as it is mesmerizing and entrancing. K.M.T. is a cybernetic machine gun suite that shoots both bullets of love and bullets of fire. -SM

10) Badbadnotgood - IV (Innovative Leisure, July 08 2016)

On IV, these jazz-school outcasts turned breakbeat superstars have reigned in their act to achieve a more refined cohesion of groove and style, a tasty mellow piece of modern mood-jazz. This record sounds dope--like a 21st century remodel of Morricone’s finest 70’s lounge themes. The juicy production would make David Axelrod smile. After their illustrious collab w/ Ghostface Killah (2015’s SOUR SOUL), BBNG sound like they have less to prove. More comfortable in their own skin and playing host to memorable guest features including Kaytranada & Future Islands’ Samuel T. Herring, IV is their best album yet. -DA

9) Jamire Williams - ///// EFFECTUAL (Leaving Records, December 02 2016)

Heard from the front as the lead artist of ERIMAJ, and from the side as a drummer for the likes of Christian Scott, Robert Glasper, Jeff Parker, and many more, Jamire Williams’s distinctively colorful, minimal and textural percussion has always projected a more finely artistic vibe than the average modern jazz drummer. His elegant rhythmic expressions are distinctively present in all the aforementioned, often swaying over swinging, sounding like a bastard child of Thelonious Monk on traps. For his first eponymous release, Jamire worked with producer Carlos Niño to channel the spirit of Jack DeJohnette’s solo percussion recordings of the 1970s. ///// EFFECTUAL is a collection of purely focused portraits, along the lines of DeJohnette’s Pictures, but utilizes an updated palette (beatboxes, hard-compression, hovering synths) to paint more contemporarily communicable abstract sound canvases. -SM

8) Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds - Skeleton Tree (Bad Seeds Ltd, September 09 2016)

Dismissal is a common response to late career offerings from prolific artists. Expectations of softer treads on well-worn territory are safe, simple ways to disengage as a listener. In the case of Nick Cave’s #16 studio album with the Bad Seeds, however, dismissal is a certain mistake. Skeleton Tree is exemplary of Cave’s brittle and transcendent songcraft. Cave as balladeer hasn’t struck so emotionally rife and raw as he does on “Rings of Saturn” and “I Need You” in over a decade (see: Abattoir Blues / Lyre of Orpheus). He has, once again, improved brilliantly on the form. Madman balladry may be well-worn but the difference is that Cave’s treads press deeper with contour and detail and illuminate the lively oeuvre of one of our dearest masters. -JD

7) Rob Mazurek & Jeff Parker - Some Jellyfish Live Forever (Rogue Art, February 19 2016)

The first duo recording from these longtime collaborators is a masterwork of strange and sublime beauty. Curious melodies are set to explore and delight a minimally textured Eno-esque palette of guitar, cornet and electronics with effortless command of tone and space. The alien movement of jellyfish is an apt image here; the rhythmic pulse seems infinitely repetitive yet changes occur subtly and/or suddenly over time. Placid and hypnotic, tension looms in tacit danger and dissonance. A fitting soundtrack for eternity in a submerged world. -DA

6) Jay Daniel - Broken Knowz (Technicolour, November 25 2016)

House music’s relentless mechanized beat is a polarizing force which often alienates instrumentalists and perhaps drummers in particular. Jay Daniel’s November debut is a history in reverse--the electronic producer retreats to the drum kit for rejuvenation and thusly lights the way forward. The acoustical warmth of Daniel’s loops and his rigid minimization of layers casts the spotlight onto the elements of the beat and makes Broken Knowz one of the most generous gateways into dance music to date. -JD

5) Carlos Niño & Friends - Flutes, Echoes, It’s All Happening! (Leaving Records, April 22 2016)

The majestic mellow of Venice Beach scene sage Carlos Niño has been steadily seeping into the experimental electronic, jazz and future soul sounds of Los Angeles, and the vision of its omni-present aura is nowhere more materialized than on Flutes, Echoes, It’s All Happening! Niño’s opus takes a more spiritually guided approach to blissed out orchestration in the veins of Martin Denny and Yanni, or Enya and Esquivel. But it’s most like the way Alice Coltrane & Pharaoh Sanders would interpret those purveyors of New Age and Exotica. -SM

4) Kendrick Lamar - untitled unmastered. (Aftermath, March 04 2016)

We chose not to include To Pimp A Butterfly in our 2015 list. What was immediately clear as the album of a generation did not need mention on our humble year-end recap. The addendum and expansion that is untitled unmastered. was dropped so quickly on its heels and with so little fanfare it was almost shocking--needless proof of the deep talent Kendrick & Co. have to offer. This record is just badass and so fun to listen to. Its unfiltered quality feels authentic and immediate. We are living in a trying time that calls for action and, in guiding form, Kendrick wastes no time overthinking it. He just delivers. -DA

3) Elza Soares - A Mulher Do Fim Do Mundo (Mais Um, June 10 2016)

Bygone Brazilian pop icon Elza Soares embodies A Mulher Do Fim Do Mundo (“The Woman At The End Of The World”)--extraterrestrially fashioned and coming in ablaze at seventy-something-years-old, a raging backdraft of feminine fire. She cuts no slack, unapologetically rallying and railing against oppressive patriarchal norms and the slew of imminent social issues accompanying 2016’s troubling influx of Brazilian neo-fascism. Elza’s pertinent messages are delivered passionately over brooding avant-garde dirty samba grooves, a perfect pairing. For tonal and textural fans of Toms Ze and Waits. -SM

2) Mica Levi & Oliver Coates - Remain Calm (Slip, November 25 2016)

Though the 13 Neo-classical passages of Remain Calm may have been suited as a film score like Mica Levi’s other recent work (namely Jackie and Under the Skin), there’s a deliberate singularity to the article as a whole. Composing looped electronics and vocal samples next to Oliver Coates’ bellowing cello drones is placidly hair-raising. On Remain Calm, Levi and Coates finesse tonally grim noirs with lush acoustics signalling a prevailing existentialism within a cold and malevolent landscape. The linguistics of track titles (“Bless Our Toes,” “Dolphins Climb Onto the Shore for the First Time”) and the clipped vocal utterances reveal a resoluteness of human spirit while the network of influences reveal a lucidity of musical history and social consciousness. Remain Calm is remarkable, transcendent and unveils two collaborators working at the peak of their creative powers. -JD

1) Horse Lords - Interventions (Northern Spy, April 29 2016)

This Baltimore quartet have been revising the ‘rock band’ format since 2012, escaping the genre’s binds and mashing up a selection of 20th/21st century avant-gardeisms with faraway folk styles in their just-intonated Sahara Desert cruising machine.

Interventions is a blazing technicolor display of the ideas they’ve laid out in black & white before, a building and stripping of polyrhythmic layers tightly woven into their unique brand of groove. Mesmerizing left field jammers are broken up by could-be snippets of the members’ minimalist solo works; explorative ‘interventions’ that critically punctuate the album. Horse Lords distill challenging and diverse elements down into music that is incredibly palpable. All of that to say, the record is still fun. There is a head-nodding booty-shaking catchiness throughout. A refreshing reboot of rock music, Interventions is a hypnotically immersive listen. -DA

With each passing day the Trump White House Reality Show Saga staggers forth, drowning the public arena in plots and events which would leave a Brazilian soap opera in the dust of absurdist improbability. Each day the various spokespersons emerge to spew ridiculous lies, one after the other, with seeming shamelessness. Nearly each day Herr Trump emits a sequences of Twitter enuncios, often mangled in misspellings, grammatical knots, and, yes, the invariable Everest of lies which seem to be his singular reason for being. This grand drama has carried on ever since his highness descended the golden escalator of Trump Tower, greeted by a large gaggle of paid actors, and announced he was in the ring, running for President. It was in more ways than one a real class act.

He’d laid the groundwork for this grand Guignol theater with decades in the trenches of the New York real estate biz, and then the tinsel glamor of casinos, draped with gambling’s usual cast of thugs and local Mafia which, in fact, was not a great change from NYC’s corrupt building industry. And then, having failed in both these endeavors, with a trail of bankruptcies to show for it, he moved on TV’s reality-show sewer, and ever greater fakery.

As with his businesses, so it was with wives. Failing with one, he dumped her and moved to the next, a littering the way with a string of children, the last of whom is named after the fake PR agent which Trump himself used to play to pass along juicy items to New York’s yellow press. Barron was his name, and he’d call to let the world know of Trump’s latest conquests in the field of fucking. His son now bears this albatrossian monicker. Lucky him.

And now looking more haggard with his vast comb-over and sagging flesh, eyes peering out from their odd white sockets from the fake tan skin job he applies to himself, The Donald is able to command the world’s attention, his stubby fingers but a code away from incinerating the whole globe, should the corrupted American system comply with a demented order from The President. Thus far the theoretical “checks and balances” of the Founding Fathers scheme seem to be faltering seriously.

All of the above is appalling, and sadly true. The Rosebud of Trump’s psyche is clearly hidden in the massive chip on the Queens kid’s shoulder. Bruised with a silver spoon up his ass at birth, and apparently a harsh unloving father and mother, The Donald took his million buck wad from his father, moved into the Manhattan real-estate racket, and pulled himself up by his own bootstraps, a real Horatio Alger American success story. Well, not quite. Hobbled with a bone spur in one of his feet, he forgets which, Donald blazed a pecker-track trail through the decadent Manhattan party scene of the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s, emerging, so he says, unscathed with STD, his own private Vietnam, risking AIDS with each psycho-sexual battle. Along the way he blew his million buck starter kit, had some bankruptcies here and there, and built a reputation as a scam artist, from high to low. He moved on to Atlantic City casinos, and gambling there, lost again. His dad bailed him out with a legally dubious multi-million dollar purchase of casino chips. The Trump Taj Mahal recently shuttered its doors after being sold to another sucker. Along the line The Donald learned that old PT Barnum maxim, there’s one born every second.

Failed but famous, he saw his name was the best product on offer, mystical and golden. Trump Steaks! Trump National Golf Courses! Trump Vodka! Trump University! He built a tower on 5th Avenue, asserting it was 68 floors when it was in fact 58. He installed a private Versailles on its top floors, a garish palace of fake Louis XIV and hauled his third wife up there to spawn his 5th child, dear Barron. And yet, despite all this, the Manhattan elite never accepted him and his brash, crude and rude ways, and the best tables at the classy restaurants were not reserved for him. In fact the boys on Wall Street finally declined to bank with him, and he turned his sights to other funding sources, and, along with other New York real-estate moguls, Trumpworld became a money laundering machine for Russian and East European dirty money, carefully funneled through an arcane web of off-shore shell companies and banks.

This fantastical story is no fable, but rather the unhappy truth, a real American novel writ large if crude.

Though the still more fantastical story – no fable – is that this one could never have been lived if it were not for the world in which it has been played out: America, circa now. In an America where corruption on a vast scale is the norm, though not so long ago we primly lectured the world on probity. Where the once staunchly proper Republican Party lies supine, awaiting Donald’s allegedly very little dick, for a daily reaming. Where a party of pious moralizers about women’s bodies turn utterly silent when the most obvious of liars occupies the White House in their name, and tramples daily on the “values” which they once harped upon so loudly. The hypocrisy is so vast as to diminish the word “hypocrisy” to nothing. It is something else. It is something which has incrementally entered the American body politic in ways that, as ever in hindsight, seem so obvious now, though were invisible as they entered the bloodstream. A stealthy terminal cancer which does not reveal itself until it takes your life.

Today the liberal world of Democrats is still in shock, unable to believe their most worthy candidate actually lost to the uncouth bullying braggart which Donald John Trump is. At the outset of the campaign they were salivating at the obviousness of their win, it was a no-brainer no-match. They’d take the Senate, clean up in once Red States, and waltz happily from the wonders of a black President to smashing the glass ceiling of sexism, and have a woman in the Oval Office. And, in a manner they did: 3 million more votes went to Madam Clinton than Mr Trump received, just that, in the arcane electoral scam world of America, they were in the wrong places. Firm in her belief that certain fly-over zones, traditionally Democratic, were hers for granted, she declined to campaign in Wisconsin, Michigan, Ohio, and missed out on noting the collapse of these realms which Don the Con so expertly gamed into his head count.

And then of course there is the litany of GOP tricks of gerrymandering, of voting roll purges, and, so it seems, a bit of Russian cyber warfare to tilt the appropriate tables just enough to pull out a Trump Electoral College win. Such is the Dem lament. If, indeed, Putin had much to do with it (I’d guess he did, but the roots go far back into post-USSR oligarchic mafia money flooding into NYC and along the way bailing The Donald out of his business miseries), then in terms of grand real-politik, he’s already had an immense win: the USA is in severe internal turmoil, and seems headed towards a dissolution similar to that which the good old USSR went through.

The bottom line, which it seems Democrats are unable to comprehend, nor did their GOP counterparts, is that the USA is, socially, utterly corrupted, top to bottom, and only in such a situation could a Donald Trump emerge triumphant. With the GOP he acted like a juvenile delinquent, he huffed and puffed and called his opposition truly stupid bad names – and they all shriveled up and collapsed as they were nothing to begin with. And once he won, having insulted them all, they showed their true characters and value and went to suck his butt.

“We came, we saw, he died.” (Laughter.)

And while the Democrats imagine themselves somehow different, in truth it is their own corruption – for decades – which brought this debacle upon them, and upon the nation. For decades they have spoken nice liberal niceties, while wallowing in the trough of corporate malfeasance, and enhancing their personal wealth along the way. Clinton (both) did half-million buck speeches to Wall Street honchos and said no quid pro quo was involved, while they backed the corporately-written trade agreements that have decimated American labor. Obama, well-mannered Harvard-trained Step’n Fetchit did the Man’s bidding and let Wall Street off the hook for illegalities up the kazoo in the 2008 collapse. Ditto did he say he was “looking forward” and not back in letting Bush and gang off the hook for lying the USA into a disastrous war, the consequences of which are still being played out. One of the club. The list of Democratic dishonesty is equal to that of the Republicans, because, bottom line, they all belong to the same institutions and the same insider game. That is the corruption which blossomed over the decades as the few became obscenely wealthy, and the many fell ever further behind, and the social infrastructure was effectually let to rot while the liberal-left of America mouthed platitudes about race, sexual identification, “safe” spaces, and all the rest of the fake stuff of “political correctness” which invaded our public commons, while the invisible hand of the market consigned a vast portion of the country to Walmart and worse. While 22 veterans a day, left homeless, commit suicide each day – now far out-numbering those killed in combat. While meth and then opioids cut a lethal swath across the nation’s failing economic casualties. It is not as if these things were not visible, it is just that for the liberal world, the large mental “fly-over” country was dismissed as a yahoo red-neck Nascar wreck, unworthy of attention or care, and was left to Fox and friends to warp with 24/7 right-wing propaganda. All in plain sight, but until it came to whack them over the head in the 2016 election, seemingly unworthy of giving the time of day. And now the institutional Democrats are convulsed in an internecine war with themselves, fingers pointing blame at anyone but the person in the mirror: It was Sanders’ fault. It was the blind DNC. It was Clinton’s ham-handedness and arrogance. It was the Russians. It was…..

It was anyone and anything aside from the rotted corrupt society that is America today. A society in which corruption is such a norm that a great majority is blind to it, taking it as how the world is, and how it should be. Grade inflation in schools, from kindergarten to PhD’s in Harvard. Cheating as a necessary way to get ahead. A medical system which is little more than an extortion racket. Our vast and corrosive “entertainment” industry that feeds virtual death on a grand scale 24/7 – look at your TV and Hwd block-busters. Sports which are but a step away from Roman gladiators killing each other for the pleasure of violence besotted spectators. A military-industrial-media system that functions as a quasi-religion and contorts the American economy in a death-lock. Look almost anywhere and the ugly specter of corruption materializes: social, economic, cultural, political.

This should be no surprise in an imperial system which lies to itself, and has done so from its inception. The United States of America comprises 5% of the world’s population and consumes 25% of its resources. While America insists that it is “exceptional” and that this disproportion derives both from having a large landmass and brilliant creative entrepreneurial people the brutal fact is that it has a vast military machine which enforces its economic sway on much, if no longer all, of the world. It is imperialism, plain and simple. But Americans, self-deluded, do not acknowledge it, just as they do not acknowledge that the US is almost always at war, supposedly defending “US interests.” In such a system the moral rot is innate: no one wishes to admit their wealth is ill-gained, no one wishes to really admit the history which is that of America. Almost no one in such a system will volunteer to relinquish 80% of their wealth to help even out the grotesque distribution of global wealth. Being on the road often, driving and parking in the dirt, and traveling through various weather conditions all put your RV through a lot. The cleaner you keep your RV, the easier it will be to avoid the normal wear and tear from traveling throughout the year.
