❦  BOOK ONE - A Realm Reborn   ❦
❧ CHAPTER FOUR- - - - - The Ascian      PART ONE: patrol
The most dangerous times were quiet, peaceful times, he found.
With the case of the missing farmhands solved and peace restored to Summerford Farms, Lucan found his patrol duties to be limited and somewhat needless. A few errant beasts here and there that wandered too close for comfort, but nothing the average pirate couldn’t handle. The thought of disbanding his one man guard post came to mind, but Staelwyrn insisted he stay on as the guard. That just because quiet reigned supreme in the here and now, it didn’t mean the future wouldn’t hold some other need of Lucan’s talents.
Lucan knew that only all too well. The most dangerous times were quiet, peaceful times, he found. Often interrupted by the unexpected. So he agreed. Agreed to stay on as the sole Summerford Guard, under one condition: his patrol range was to be widened. Rather than simply patrolling Summerford and beyond the Lift, he’d head into Western La Noscea. From the road passing by the Brewer’s Beacon all the way to Aleport, he would patrol day and night. It would give him a change of scenery, though the landscape was similar to Summerford. High, limestone rocky cliffs overlooking the ocean as far as the eye could see.
The Brewer’s Beacon was a lighthouse that would give him a view of all the major landmarks in the area. From Aleport’s massive shipyard to the Isles of Umbra, where the ship graveyard littered the waves and Pharos Sirius stood tall among the clouds, scored for an eternity by the breath of Bahamut, large yellow crystals immortalized in it’s epicenter. Both were well known causes for trouble and Lucan liked to keep an eye on said trouble.
His favorite time to patrol was at night, when the crystals glowed brighter than the moon and the stars combined. Golden light shining out across the land. Brewer’s Beacon paled in comparison, though he gathered the lighthouse itself was not really used as a lighthouse. The brewery beneath was the reason for the building. Some nights, he’d even stop in for a quick brew, though none that would threaten his ability to patrol. He could only imagine what his former guard captain would think of drinking on the job.
But it was a job less needed the more time passed. The farmhands were settling back down, Rhotwyda’s wounds were healed and the girl had been ever thankful to him for the part he played in her rescue. Sevrin was making it up to his comrades and for the most, they’d forgave him. Some still held a grudge and Lucan hated to see it, but he could tell through the bruises Sevrin sometimes showed up with. Those would fade, as would the hard feelings if Sevrin kept at it. Kept at trying to make amends. The boy would be alright, Lucan was sure.

Urias’ WO SAC Fly Wins It For Brewers.
Twins 6 Brewers 7 W-Hader (1-4) L-Duffey (2-4)
The Minnesota Twins started the second half off strong with a pair of wins over the Tigers. They continued their road trip with a trip over to Milwaukee to play the first place Brewers. The Twins were ready from the start as Byron Buxton belted an Ethan Small fastball out to left for a lead-off homer. The Brewers would answer in the second when Andrew McCutchen and Kolten Wong dumped in singles. Hunter Renfroe followed and smacked a Dylan Bundy slider out to left for a three-run blast. Luis Urias kept the inning going with a base hit to right and Jonathan Davis walked. Christian Yelich doubled home another run and the Brewers led 4-1 after two innings of play. Byron Buxton helped get those runs back as he doubled to start the third. Jorge Polanco walked and Jose Miranda plated a pair with a double to left. Minnesota was within a run, but Milwaukee came right back. Luis Urias smoked a Dylan Bundy fastball out to left for a solo homer and the Brew Crew had a 5-3 lead. The Twins started to comeback in the fifth with a Kyle Garlick two-out walk. Jose Miranda singled to center and Gio Urshela put the Twins ahead with a three-run homer off Trevor Gott. Kolten Wong would tie up the game with a blast off Joe Smith and we remained tied at six for awhile. Both bullpens held up until the bottom of the ninth. Andrew McCutchen ignited the rally with a one-out single to left. The next two batters walked to load up the bases. This brought up Luis Urias, who hit a flyball to right field. Alex Kirilloff made the best throw he could home, but it was too late. Andrew McCutchen scored and the Brewers took the series opener tonight at Miller Park.
-Final Thoughts- Dylan Bundy had a rocky outing in his first start of the second half. He went four innings and allowed five runs on seven hits with two walks and five strikeouts. Joe Smith gave up a homer with two strikeouts in the fifth, Emilio Pagan fanned two in the sixth, and Griffin Jax had a scoreless seventh. Jhoan Duran got in and out of trouble in the eighth. Tyler Duffey didn’t have his control and lost the game in the ninth. Jose Miranda led the way with three hits on the night. Byron Buxton returned to the lineup in a big way with two hits. The Twins hit 2-for-9 with runners in scoring position and left six men on base. Tomorrow, Chris Archer faces Corbin Burnes in the series finale from Milwaukee.

You Are So Streaky, Pittsburgh Pirates
My Dearest Pittsburgh Pirates,
Well, you certainly know how to beat up on the bad teams. This week you played two last place teams, the Cincinnati Reds and the Miami Marlins. The only thing that stopped you from winning all six games was the weather. You were rained out yesterday so you couldn’t sweep all three from the Marlins. You scored 25 runs in the five games this week so the offense finally started producing again. The pitching remained solid only giving up ten runs in those five games. It’s the same old thing. You look like world beaters for a week and then the next week you look like you are the worst team in baseball. It’s what streaky teams do and typically streaky teams are only so successful. They are usually about .500 which is exactly what you are right now. You are 71-71 with twenty games to go. You are an average team. That’s okay because you are an average team on the rise with a rotation and bullpen that are young and improving. There is reason for optimism going into 2019 if you can improve the roster.
Gregory Polanco played his last game of the season this week. Polanco hurt his knee sliding into second and stayed down for a while before hobbling off. I was concerned it could be something that would carry into next season. It’s a significant bone bruise to his left knee that requires six weeks of rest. He injured his shoulder on the play too. That’s a relief as far as him being ready for next season. It’s a little disheartening to see a guy who has trouble staying healthy get hurt yet again. Polanco ended up putting together his best year of his career. 23 homers, 81 RBI’s, 12 steals, splits of .254/.340/.499 for an .839 OPS. His OPS+ was 127 and he ended with a WAR of 1.9. It’s not superstar level numbers but that’s a pretty damn good season from someone we were all losing faith in during his terrible slump earlier this year. These are good stats but if they are the stats of your best player, that’s a problem. Even if you have another player or two with the exact same stats it can work, but not when he’s your only batter to his over twenty homers this season. That’s a problem when you play in a league dominated by the home run. It’s something you desperately need to address this offseason. Maybe Jeff Branson should finally embrace the launch angles.
It’s not much of a debate who the biggest disappointment was this season. That would be Josh Bell by a landslide. Going into this week, he had only hit eight homers after hitting twenty-six last season. He hit two this week to get him up to ten, but even this week hasn’t been great. He did walk seven times so that explains his .370 OBP and the two homers give him a .500 slugging percentage which means he had an .870 OPS this week. He also batted .150 with three hits in twenty at bats. Over his last 30 games, he’s batting .211 with a .753 OPS which is funny because that’s his exact OPS for the season right now. Bell’s defense has improved but is still problematic based on his negative defensive WAR, so if he doesn’t hit more he’s basically Colin Moran. He can’t field, he’s slow, and he has middling offensive potential. Your corner infielders are supposed to provide a lot of offense in most lineups. With Freese gone, you are looking at next season with two corner infielders who have combined to hit eighteen homers this year. That as many as Starling Marte has and he’s not usually looked to for power numbers. After last season, Bell will be giving a full opportunity to bounce back next season and that’s an opportunity he should get given his pedigree. That means you need to add a third baseman and possibly an insurance policy for Bell. Maybe a righty hitter with some pop who rips lefties well. It would give you a nice platoon option, if nothing else. You can’t afford to go another season with production like this from your corner infielders. You do and you might be looking at another .500 season.
Corey Dickerson has had a tough fall from grace. He was putting together a terrific season and was a main reason why you felt comfortable trading Austin Meadows to the Rays in the Chris Archer deal. He should have arguably been an All Star with the first half he had. Then he pulled him hamstring and spent a little under two weeks on the disabled list. Since then, he’s been a totally different player, in the bad way. In his last 30 games, his splits are .211/.221/.275 for an abysmal .496 OPS. He struck out 26 times in 103 at bats during that span and walked twice. This is what happened to him last year. Had a terrific first half, made the All Star game, and then couldn’t buy a hit in the second half. It could be that he’s playing hurt so that’s affecting his performance. Either way, I assume it will put a pause on all of that extension talk. He’s making 5.95 million this year and has one year left of arbitration before becoming a free agent after next season. He should get a pay raise to about 7 or 8 million for 2019. It’s hard to know which Dickerson will show up. You have limited options right now so you will definitely pay him next season but the long term future with the team is cloudy. Like Polanco, he doesn’t hit lefties well so you want might to look into getting a fourth outfielder who punishes lefties. Then you can give either your lefties a day off once in a while. You hope Dickerson can bounce back next season, but with not a lot of outfield prospects near the majors, things have become a little dire.
This week isn’t so friendly. You hit the road for two series against two division rivals fighting for playoff spots. It could be fun to play spoilers. You start a three-game series today against the St. Louis Cardinals. They finally cooled off after their ridiculous run that got them back into the playoff picture. They currently hold the second Wildcard spot with a one game lead over the Dodgers and three games over the Diamondbacks. The Rockies only lead the Dodgers by a game in their division so there are a lot of teams still vying for those final two spots. It would be lovely to hurt the Cardinals chances of making the playoffs. After a day off Thursday, you head to Milwaukee to play the Brewers, who currently hold the number one Wildcard spot. They have a two game lead over the Cardinals and are only two games behind the Cubs for the division lead. These are huge games for these two teams that you don’t like and you could really put a damper on their chances if you can win some games. It would be fun to see that happen. The rest of this season is about seeing some of the younger guys and staying healthy. Obviously the Polanco injury sets a bad tone but you can’t just bench everyone and wrap them in bubble wrap to protect them. It’s not realistic. Though with a couple guys, I might prefer it. Keep getting better and try to ruin your rivals week. Good luck!
                                                                          Remaining Hot And Cold,
                                                                                           Brad
P.S. can stand for many things in this instance. Pretty Sloppy, Pretty Sh**ty, but it actually stands for Pittsburgh Steelers. They are back and played their first game yesterday in terrible weather conditions. They tied the Cleveland Browns 21-21 in what can only be described as an ugly game. The officiating was bad, the Steelers’ six turnovers were bad, and the Browns are supposed to be bad. They are certainly improved but they will need to right the ship quickly. The high-flying Kansas City Chiefs offense comes to Pittsburgh for the home opener next weekend. Another performance like this and you will be 0-1-1 with either Baltimore or Cincinnati (they play each other Thursday night) on top of the division at 2-0…

Coastal Carolina: 2021 Cure Bowl Champions
Tumblr media
ORLANDO, Fla. -- — Grayson McCall threw four touchdown passes and Coastal Carolina held off Northern Illinois 47-41 in the Cure Bowl on Friday night, with the game ending with the Huskies at the Chanticleers 4.
McCall was 22 for 30 for 315 yards, and Braydon Bennett ran for 108 yards and two touchdowns on six carries to help Coastal Carolina (11-1) win 11 games for the second consecutive year. Bennett also caught four passes for 47 yards and a TD.
"He just operates, he's a smooth operator," Coastal Carolina coach Jamey Chadwell said about McCall. "As a coach, if he misses a play, you're like, ‘What in the world is wrong with him' because he makes so many good one's."
Chadwell said while there is speculation about McCall's future, "we're confident that he loves Coastal and he's going to be here with us and finish out his career."
It was also Coastal Carolina's first bowl victory. The Chanticleers lost in their first bowl appearance last year, 37-34 in overtime to Liberty.
"Pretty cool," McCall said. "Definitely a team effort. I don't think I played by best game but but all my teammates propelled me forward."
Jay Ducker ran for 146 yards on 24 carries, and Antario Brown added 105 yards and 12 attempts for Northern Illinois (9-5). Rocky Lombardi completed 20 of 33 passes for 181 yards and two scores.
"Couldn't be more proud of their fight," NIU coach Thomas Hammock said. "This could be a launching pad for us into the 2022 season."
NIU's roster has just seven seniors, and includes 71 players who graduated from high school in 2020 or 2021. The Huskies are the first team in FBS history to win its conference championship game one season after going winless (0-6).
Lombardi also had picked up 66 yards including a touchdown on eight carries.
Northern Illinois (516) and Coastal Carolina (514) combined for 1,030 yards. Northern Illinois picked up 335 yards on the ground.
After Northern Illinois wide receiver Trayvon Rudolph was stopped for no gain on a fourth-and-1 run at the Huskies 34, McCall threw a shovel pass from the option to Bennett for a TD on the next play. He then connected with Isaiah Likely on a two-point conversion to make it 47-41 with 6:40 left.
NIU converted 4 of 5 fourth-down plays in the game and ended the season successful of 26 of 31 attempts.
Northern Illinois got the ball back at its own 13 with 2 1/2 minutes to play. Lombardi hit Miles Joiner for a 4-yard gain on fourth down to the Coastal Carolina 4 with 2 seconds remaining, but the Huskies couldn't off another play.
Likely's second touchdown reception got Coastal Carolina within two at 41-39 with nine minutes left, but McCall's threw an incomplete pass on the two-point try.
Northern Illinois led 24-19 at the half as both teams scored on their first four possessions. NIU's fifth and final possession started with a second left following a kickoff.
McCall passed for 164 yards and a TD during the opening half, while Lombardi threw for just 23 yards but had scoring strikes of 5- and 12-yards.
GAME BALL
A special pink football was brought into the stadium by U.S. military paratroopers during a pregame ceremony. The NCAA approved the use of a football with pink laces for the opening kickoff. It was the first approval of its kind by the NCAA.
TRAINERS ROOM
Northern Illinois: Hammock said around 20-to-25 of his players were impacted by flulike symptoms over the last few days.
Coastal Carolina: Defensive lineman C.J. Brewer left with a groin injury.

Yelich’s unlikely shot at history comes to an end as Brewers win NL Central
Tumblr media
By Stephen Gugliociello
By the time Christian Yelich arrived in Phoenix for Milwaukee Brewers spring training, he was the final piece of another Miami Marlins fire sale to go.
Over the previous seven months, the Marlins had traded or released the majority of their primary assets: Reigning-NL MVP Giancarlo Stanton had been traded to the New York Yankees, left fielder Marcel Ozuna had been traded to the St. Louis Cardinals at the trade deadline, second baseman Dee Gordon had been traded to the Seattle Mariners, and the team’s best pitcher, Edinson Volquez, had been granted his out-right release.
Yelich had always been a player with great potential, but had only shown flashes of it in south Florida. In his five seasons in Miami, he averaged .290, 12 homers, 59 RBI, .369 on-base percentage, and .432 slugging. He did have a career year in 2016, however, when he hit 21 home runs, 98 RBI, .298/.376/483 and had won a Silver Slugger.
But when Yelich arrived in Milwaukee, he was met with something he had never experienced before -- expectations. The team had recently signed free-agent outfielder Lorenzo Cain away from the Kansas City Royals, and were in hot pursuit of free-agent pitcher, Yu Darvish (Darvish eventually signed with division-rival Chicago).
The team still had pieces in place from the previous season -- 2011 NL MVP Ryan Braun, third baseman Travis Shaw (31 homers, 101 RBI in 2017), young shortstop Orlando Arcia, and first baseman Eric Thames, who hit 31 home runs and had a .518 slugging percentage in 2017, his first year in the majors since 2012.
By the All-Star break, the Brewers found themselves in a good position -- they were 55-43 after a 19-8 May. Yelich was also finding success, hitting .292/.364/.459 with 11 home runs and 43 RBI, and being named to his first All-Star team.
But during the second half, the Brewers came back down to earth. They played .500 ball from June to August (12-13, 15-13, 13-13) and were trailing the division-leading Cubs, who had sat in first place since the middle of July.
The team had made several moves at the trade deadline in a hope to bolster the team’s hitting -- they acquired Mike Moustakas, a power-hitting, free-agent-to-be from Kansas City, and Jonathan Schoop from Baltimore, a second baseman having an impressive year.
Yelich’s surge really began in August, when he hit 10 homers with 27 RBI, .307/.363/.557, which had the people in Milwaukee talking. However, by the beginning of September, the Brewers were still five games behind the Cubs for the division lead.
It was at that point Yelich spring-boarded himself into the national conversation as the Brewers surged. He hit .352/.500/.807.  And thanks to his late-season outburst, not only did many consider Yelich the favorite for the National League MVP, but he was suddenly in a race with history. After game 162, Yelich led the league in hitting at .323, he was second in home runs with 36 (Colorado Rockies third baseman Nolan Arenado had 37), and second in RBI with 108 (Cubs infielder Javy Baez had 110).
Thanks in large part to Yelich’s hot hitting, the Brewers went 19-7 in the season’s final month, ending the season in a tie for first place with the Cubs, which meant only one thing -- a game 163.
Game 163, a tie-breaker for the division, would be held Oct. 1 in Chicago. It would also give Yelich one last shot at hitting for the triple crown.
Facing Cubs lefty Jose Quintana, Yelich started the game red-hot, going 3-3 with an RBI, cutting Baez’s RBI lead down to only one.
With the score 1-1 in the top of the 8th inning, the Brewers began to rally. With runners on second and third and no one out, Cain singled off Cubs side-arming reliever Steve Cishek to drive in the runner from third, making the score 2-1, Brewers.
Cubs manager Joe Maddon immediately went to the bullpen as the crowd started to murmur and cheers got louder. Left-hander Randy Rosario strolled out of the Cubs bullpen as the crowd rose to their feet. Into the left-handed batter’s box strode Yelich, and what was at stake in the moment for the Brewers, and Yelich himself, was lost on very few.
“If he homers here, I’m going to get up, walk out of this broadcast booth, and never come back,” said ESPN analyst Tim Kurkjian, “because nothing will ever top that.”
Yelich proceeds to swing and foul off the first three fastballs from Rosario, all around 93 MPH.
The fourth pitch comes in at 88 MPH, high over the black. Ball one. 1-2 to Yelich.
The fifth pitch, another cutter, comes in at 88 MPH, but is in the right-handed batter’s box. Yelich lays off easy. 2-2.
With the goal of keeping the game close, and holding off history for Yelich, Rosario dealt the sixth pitch.
Yelich took a big swing.
Cutter, 87 MPH on the outer half.
But alas, the mighty Yelich had struck out.
He put his head down and headed back to the dugout. There was a mixture of cheers and boos; cheers from the home Cubs fans, and boos from the Brewers fans, many of whom had made the three-plus hour drive from Wisconsin. They weren’t mad at Yelich for striking out, they were more disappointed that he didn’t get to achieve immortality.
Yelich wouldn’t get another at bat. But the trajectory of history would not change with his strike out.
Braun came up next and hit a single to right-center at the vacated second base position, as Cain had been running on the pitch, scoring the runner from third.
Left-handed fireballer Josh Hader came on in the bottom of the 8th, and would retire the next six hitters to record the save, and seal the win for the Brewers.
The Brewers had climbed all the way back and won the NL Central, had the best record in the league, and Yelich being named the 2018 MVP seemed all but a cinch.
But on this day, his name wouldn’t join the likes of Joe Medwick, Chuck Klein, Rogers Horsby, Heinie Zimmerman, or Paul Hines, as National League hitters to achieve the triple crown.

Here are my predicted standings for the 2019 Major League Baseball season:
                                           American League:
East:                                   Central:                               West:
1.) New York                       1.) Cleveland                   1.) Houston
2.) Boston                           2.) Minnesota                   2.) Oakland
3.) Tampa Bay                     3.) Detroit                        3.) Los Angeles
4.) Toronto                           4.) Chicago                      4.) Seattle
5.) Baltimore                       5.) Kansas City                5.) Texas
                                         National League:
East:                                      Central:                                West:
1.) Atlanta                         1.) Milwaukee                  1.) Los Angeles
2.) Philadelphia                2.) Chicago                       2.) Colorado
3.) Washington                 3.) St. Louis                      3.) Arizona
4.) New York                    4.) Pittsburgh                    4.) San Francisco
5.) Miami                           5.) Cincinnati                   5.) San Diego
American League Wild-Card: Athletics Beat Red Sox
National League Wild-Card: Cubs Beat Rockies
ALDS: Yankees Beat Athletics. Astros Beat Indians
NLDS: Dodgers Beat Cubs. Brewers Beat Braves
ALCS: Astros Beat Yankees
NLCS: Dodgers Beat Brewers
World Series: Dodgers Beat Astros in 6 Games.
The American League should more be more competitive this year than it was last season. The American League East has the Yankees poised to win the division. The Red Sox didn’t solidify their bullpen enough and will get burned eventually. That division will be a three-team race between the Yankees, Red Sox, and Rays. I think the Yankees are the strongest team in the East. The American League Central is the weakest division in baseball. The Indians might have enough to repeat as division champions, but the Twins are breathing down their necks. It will come down to the starting pitching for the Twins to see if they can beat out the Indians. The Tigers, White Sox, and Royals are all rebuilding. The American League West has the Astros, A’s, and Angels all fighting for that top spot. Oakland surprised everyone last year, but that bullpen is among the best in baseball. The East and West divisions should be fun to watch unfold throughout the year.
The National League has a lot of good teams. The American League East will be a two-team race between the Braves and the Phillies. The Braves have so much young talent, while the Phillies went out and added Bryce Harper among others. The Nationals should be decent, but the Mets and Marlins are rebuilding. The National League Central is so deep this year. The Brewers were amazing last year and you have the Cubs, Cardinals, and Pirates as solid contenders in the Central. The Reds even improved their pitching staff to go along with a powerful lineup. The National League West should be a two-team race. The Dodgers are the kings of the West though and will make deals where they need to at the trading deadline. Their bullpen is better than it was last year with Joe Kelly and a healthy Kenley Jansen. The Diamondbacks will take a step back without AJ Pollock and Paul Goldschmidt. The Padres made a splash with Manny Machado, but the pitching isn’t there yet. The Giants have the pitching staff, but they need to score some runs to be competitive.
Overall, the Dodgers get to the World Series for the third straight year and finally win their first championship since 1988. Their lineup is solid and they have a few new names with AJ Pollock, Russell Martin, and Joe Kelly. They also have a healthy Julio Urias, Corey Seager, and Kenley Jansen. If they can stay healthy then the Dodgers have the farm system to make a trade deadline deal to be lethal this fall. The Astros should get back to where they were two years ago. Houston added Wade Miley, Robinson Chirinos, Aledmys Diaz, and Michael Brantley. They should be favorites again in the American League.
