Artists, let’s talk about Instagram commission scammers

There’s been a huge rise in commission scammers recently, mostly on Instagram. A lot of new artists don’t know what to look out for, so I figured this might help people.

How they begin

Usually the scammer will write to you asking about a commission. Something deceptively cute - mostly I encounter asks about pet portraits, with one or two photos sent. They’ll probably try to sell you a sweet little story, like “It’s for my son’s birthday”. They will insist that they love your artwork and style, even though they don’t follow you or never liked a single piece of your art.

What to look out for:

Their profiles will either be private, empty, or filled with very generic stuff, dating at most a few years back.

Their language will be very simple, rushed or downright bad. They might use weird emojis that nobody ever uses. They will probably send impatient “??” when you don’t answer immediately. They’re in a crunch - lots of people to scam, you know.

They’ll give you absolutely no guidelines. No hints on style, contents aside from (usually) the pet and often a name written on the artwork, no theme. Anything you draw will be perfect. Full artistic freedom. In reality they don’t really care for this part.

They’ll offer you a ridiculous amount of money. Usually 100 or 300 USD (EDIT: I know it might not be a lot for some work. What I mean here - way higher than your asking price, 100 and 300 are standard rates they give). They’ll often put in a phrase like “I am willing to compensate you financially” and “I want the best you can draw”, peppered with vague praise. It will most likely sound way too good to be true. That’s because it is.

Where the scam actually happens

If you agree, they will ask you for a payment method. They’ll try to get to this part as soon as possible.

Usually, they’ll insist on PayPal. And not just any PayPal. They’ll always insist on sending you a transfer immediately. None of that PayPal Invoice stuff (although some do have methods for that, too). They’ll really, REALLY want to get your PayPal email address and name for the transfer - that’s what they’re after. If you insist on any other method, they’ll just circle back to the transfer “for easiest method”. If you do provide them with the info, most likely you’ll soon get a scam email. It most likely be a message with a link that will ultimately lead to bleeding you dry. Never, and I mean NEVER click on any emails or links you get from them. It’s like with any other scam emails you can ever get.

A few things can happen here:

They overpay you and ask for the difference to be wired back. Usually it will go to a different account and you’ll never see that money again.

They’ll overpay you “for shipping costs” and ask you to forward the difference to their shipping company. Just like before, you’ll never see that money again.

The actual owner of the account (yes, they most likely use stolen accounts to wire from) will realize there’s been something sketchy going on and request a refund via official channels. Your account will be charged with fees and/or you get in trouble for fraudulent transactions.

You will transfer the money from your PayPal credit to your bank account and they will make a shitstorm when they want their money back, making your life a living hell. They will call you a scammer, a thief, make wild claims, wearing you down and forcing you into wiring money “back” - aka to their final destination account.

Never, EVER wire money to anyone. This is not how it’s supposed to go. Use PayPal Invoice for secure exchanges where the client needs to provide you with their email, not the other way around.

What to do when you encounter a scammer:

Ask the right questions: inquire about the style, which artwork of yours they like, as much details as you can. They won’t supply you with any good answers.

Don’t let the rush of the exchange, their praise and the promise of insanely good money to get to you. That’s how they operate, that’s how they make you lose vigilance.

Don’t engage them. As soon as you realize it might be a scam, block them. The sense of urgency they create with their rushed exchange, and pressure they put on you will sooner or later get to you and you might do something that you’ll regret later.

Never wire money to anyone. Never give out your personal data. Never provide your email, name, address or credit card info.

Don’t be deceived by receiving a payment, if you somehow agree to go along with it. Just because it’s there now doesn’t mean it can’t be withdrawn.

Here is a very standard example of such an exchange. I realized it’s a scam pretty fast and went along with it, because I wanted good screenshots for you guys, so I tried going very “by the book” with it.

Please share this post, make it reach as many artists as possible. Let young or inexperienced artists know that this is going on. So many people have no idea that this is a thing. Let’s help each other out. If you think I missed any relevant info, do add it as an rb!

Ok so here we go I guess... aka big rant and dumpster fire life update

As you guys may have noticed, I’ve disappeared from here for a while, except for a couple hellos here and there. The last few months have been pretty hard if I’m being honest. Between exams and family issues. And... basically I now find myself with absolutely no income. I could go into a very long rant about how this wasn’t what I expected to happen and how much I hate society and how much I really hate having to post this but I think this post will be long as it is...

Long story made slightly shorter: my ex is still a shitty person and has not given me child support since august and who knows when/if he plans on ever giving it ever again. That’s basically a 900€ hole in my account that I’ve been trying to make up for by using my small savings to get by with the income I had during my course (I was earning about half the minimum wage here for a full time course so not a lot but I’m used to being on a tight budget).

The course is now over so I’m not getting any more money from that, I have no job yet, no more money saved and no money coming from the unemployment place that was supposed to give me a minimum allowance to survive for the time between the course and the future job income... and I just don’t know how I’m going to pay my bills, buy food for me and my kid. I don’t know anything. My rent payment went through a couple of days ago and my bank account is so in the red it’s scary. Especially knowing that I have no way to make it better. I have all my bills in monthly transfers so I have no way of controlling that, it’s just money going out until my bank finally decides to block my account because I keep going under my overdraft limit. And I really really wish to avoid getting to that point but I just don’t see how to avoid it with how things are going.

I mean, at least it’s not anything medical or life threatening, I know people have it worse than having no money. But being in financial crisis and not knowing how or when i’m going to be able to make things better... well, i didn’t expect that since I took the course to move toward a better life, not a worse one.

All that rambling to say that I’m putting my pride aside and posting this in the off chance that maybe anyone feels like donating to help, that would be really really appreciated. So if you ever appreciated the stories I’ve written, the gifs I made, or all the events I organized over the years, maybe you’ll consider helping out if you can. I mean, now would be the perfect time to save my sorry ass.

I have no real clue how to do this. I don’t have venmo since it’s not available where I’m from. I do have my Kofi account which seems like the simplest available option? I don’t know about fees though, fees are my enemy because I'm at a point where every cent is very much welcome and needed, I’m just clueless.

I hate that I don’t really have anything to offer in return. I don’t know if I can offer to take prompts for ficlets or photoshop and actually have the focus and energy to follow through any of that because I’m pretty burnt out from the course/internship/exams and now this, I never feel creative when I’m exhausted and worried so I don’t want to make promises I can’t keep.

Sooo if you’re still reading after all of that, thank you, it makes me feel a little less alone. Obviously I know that most people are also in financial need and my problems aren’t extraordinary so I don’t really expect a thousand dollar miracle donation that would solve all my worries. But at least I got it off my chest and that’s already something...

Long Post Warning

So a lot of my Au’s have so many variations and the Black Widow Light is a great example. There are so many different ideas I have for it and trying to compile them all in one cohesive thing would be really hard, so I’m not going to! I’m going to list some ideas that stay pretty consistent across them all, and then below the line will just be some ramblings of other ideas for it. Below the cut probably won’t make much sense at all, so be warned.

To start, what exactly is Light doing? He (with the help of Misa) is seducing people with money, marrying them, setting up off shore bank accounts, transferring their money, making sure he get in the will, etc. Once he has secured that all of their money will go to him, he kills them. Then rinse and repeat.

Light would stay pretty consistent with how he kills and it would be via poison. Light is at the point of desperately trying to poison L but it simply isn’t working. Light plays the role of the perfect “house wife”, cooks, cleans, looks pretty, etc. All of Light’s previous victims had been older and have wanted to be closer to him at all times and he always killed them before it would ever get too serious. His new husband (L) doesn’t try and pressure him for physical affection or really seem to want it all that much to start with. L doesn’t even really care about spending time with Light necessarily, this is something Light really should be suspicious of but he’s mostly relieved. Even though it’s not required Light cooks for L and poisons the food, at first at just enough poison to kill. When it doesn’t work he keeps slowly adding more and more until there is just an absurd amount of poison in this guys fucking food and jack shit is still happening. Light gets concerned that his husband is on to his schemes. In reality, L is not eating the food in favor of eating the sweets Watari brings, and simply does not tell Light that he is not eating it because he doesn’t want to hurt Light’s feelings.

In this au Light looks like the definition of opulence, he is decked out in the finest things money can buy. Custom made designer everything, stiletto red bottoms, not a single thing about him looks anything less than absolute perfection. Light is willing to drop massive amounts of money on clothes in general, but especially for a disguise. He and Misa would spend a significant amount of time looking into the next victim so they can learn about that person’s tastes so Light can match it perfectly. It is not only in appearance do they prepare Light for the next victim, he also has to act the part. He’ll act however the person will find the most desirable, need a sweet southern bell? Light can be it. You need someone who will call you out on your bullshit? Oh he might actually enjoy that one. And so on. The point is that there is so much research done to create the perfect persona to get max profit from marital murder.

Those three things are the main things that are consistent across all the variations I have.

Here are on to some elements that are typically a either/or situtation, or general question I think might be asked

Does Light’s family know what he is doing?

In the ones that they do know, his mom and sister absolutely encourage his behavior. They give advice on how to improve and simplify the whole process, they help lay the scene and create whatever illusion Light is trying to create. Even in this there is variation of their involvement, one version Sayu is also doing what Light is doing, and in the other she is not. If his family knows his dad would not approve but would never say anything against it.

In the ones that they don’t know, Light is hiding it very well. In both variations of this he doesn’t tell his family much of anything at all, he’d give very little details and try to keep what he’s doing to be very vague. One version he tells them that him and Misa are just friends doing what they are doing in life together. The other version he would say they are lovers, because he believes his parents would ask less questions this way.

Do L and Light fall in love?

In almost every variation the answer is yes, the better question would be how do they fall in love? How quickly do they fall in love? Hmmm I don’t know which is more appropriate. I think ultimately the answer would be is one of them would have to initiate something besides being basically married roommates. I think ultimately it would start with one of them starting a conversation. Any conversation Light would be would be from a place of anger whether it be because he hasn’t been able to kill L yet or because L hasn’t done a single goddamn thing since they got married. I think Light would be far more likely to start the conversation but if L were to be the one, I don’t think it would quite make sense. It would probably be about something incredibly small he noticed instead of the big thing like getting married and not talking for a month. Regardless of who starts the conversation I think it would lead to them spending more time together, playing chess at first, then intense conversation, and then maybe Light helping with L’s cases. The most confident way to describe this variation is it would be similar to how Belle and the Beast fell in love (kinda).

I will get to the version they “don’t” later

Does Light kill L?

There isn’t any scenarios that particularly stands out where Light would actually end up killing L

Why does L marry Light?

Have you fucking seen Light? No seriously have you seen that hot mother fucker, god just the thought of him in a skirt. But on a serious note, for most of the variations its because he is lonely. Why not go with someone who is attractive and practically throwing himself at you? In a lot of the variations L wants the feeling of not being alone without having to put in any effort, he wants it to just happen. Some versions he kinda figured Light would do all the work, others he doesn’t really think about how it will realistically work.

Now on to some very specific ideas that only apply to a couple variations! (I think they are fun)

One of my first ideas for how L and Light would meet in this au was at a Golf Course meant for rich people. Misa and Light would’ve been cart “girls”, so basically they would bring alcohol and snacks to rich assholes who would flirt with them. In this one it was more focused on staying at this specific location as a hunting ground and it was actually working quite well for them. Misa used to participate in the hunts but she fell in love with the Course’s pretty florist. In this a lot of the other characters would’ve also been present, team Kira and the shinigamis were working at the course, while team L were members. This type of meeting would also work well for like a cruise ship, a casino, etc.

This next one I consider more comedy based, where basically Light is trying literally everything and he just cannot kill L under any circumstance. So he tries progressively more elaborate and terrible ideas and he just won’t die.

Finally one of my favorite specific ideas the version where the “don’t” love each other!

Variation 1: Light realizes L knows what’s happening but goes on and gets married banking on the fact that he thinks he can kill L before L can do anything.

Variation 1A: Neither of them say anything waiting for the other to do say something first, so they have a awkward time of knowing the others intentions. In this Light tries to poison L with the dinner, it doesn’t work. The big element at play for this one is the suspense of who is going to do something first and you can’t trust that you’ll be safe in your own home.

Variation 1B: The second they get home they are immediately trying to stop the other. This one is supposed to have major Mr. and Mrs. Smith vibes. They are both actively trying to take each other down and it is non stop. There may be some sense of normalcy or maybe not.

The overall arching theme of variation 1 is that they both know and it is dangerous. In all variations I think they would ultimately fall in love but still have that bite to each other.

Variation 2: Light doesn’t realize that L knows, in this Light keeps trying to kill L and gets increasingly angrier as all his attempts fail. This one eventually leads to variation 1, where they both know and all that. The thing I like about this one is the thought of Light doing increasingly obscure things to try and kill L sneakily and L just watching as he dies this and pretending not to know, and then Light being pissed once he finds out L knew the whole time. This one ends the same way as variation 1.

This overall idea branch is focusing on the enemies while lovers thing, but make it more intense than internal monologues. Again major Mr. and Mrs. Smith vibes, but instead of being spies being predator and prey. There is a weird balance of do they actually like eachother? let alone love? They don’t like eachother, they hate eachother, but they are in love.

So um yeah there are some of the ideas for the Black Widow Au. The rest of this can be ignored its just some ramblings not realted to the au really.

I do want to say, that I started this blog because I wanted to see more in the fandom, more ideas, more thoughts, etc. I was trying to consume more and more but it felt like hitting a dead end. I wanted to hear more people’s opinions about the characters and hear what scenarios others were coming up with. So I started this blog to add something instead of just consuming, I was and still am hoping to give people something that they can think about and enjoy. I also want to hopefully encourage more people to put their ideas out there no matter how dumb they may seem (look at basically all my posts for examples of stupidity). I love reading them and seeing them and adding where my mind went. I hope this isnt reading the wrong way. I feel like its easy to think the same thing over and over again and just hearing something simple can open and entirely new road of thought. Now I’m just rambling ugh.

All of my posts are meant to encourage thought so do whatever the fuck you want with them. Add what ever you want, get rid of aspects, mold it to what you like. I have what feels like thousands of different thoughts about the same thing going at the same time, no thought is concrete. Every idea can be changed, don’t feel like any of my posts are strict in what they say is I guess I’m trying to say.

since multiple people have wondered abt my funny ryanyurikeith office au can be found here. its just a google doc though.

the plot i havent detailed anywhere, in summary:

keith is the naive average protagonist who tries his best. he has awful dating luck and hasnt even gotten to a real date, and has been stood up by a lady named cis (more on her later).

ryan is the bad boy who transferred to the school, and yuri is the childhood friend. but who knew... ryan actually has a heart of gold despite his delinquent behaviour and yuri is the actual bad boy with his dark delinquency secret.

this except its in an office building and everyone is an adult. but its just a spoof of some high school romance tropes i could think of. also, everyone has way too much time to focus on interpersonal drama even if they all allegedly work fulltime jobs, etc.

so its perfect. its not exactly legal but through legal ways the culprit would just simply cover their tracks... shes only surprised yuri agreed to it so easily but apparently he is multifaceted...

the plotline beyond strange romance blunders and comedy bits is that someone is stealing the company assets and the three guys have to figure this out, assigned to this task by agnes.

she trusts yuri, who is also the general counsel and therefore well-suited to this task. she also trusts keith, because as the head accountant (they have in-house accounting), everything related to money has passed through him. plus he is their best employee.

ryan she does not trust but despite the rumours, due to him coming from a branch office, its impossible hes in any way related to it and even if keith is very nice and yuri is very cordial, neither seems very good at making excuses for mystery projects and the like, whereas ryan is a publicist so its his actual job, and also hes very loud and insufferable, and if he was not trustworthy yuri and keith would be very cross with him.

keith is just having fun and being himself. breasting boobily across the room to introduce himself to his new coworkers. he is going to adopt a 2nd dog (very important and deep. directly plot-related)

unbeknownst to agnes, yuri HATES corruption and rich people and corrupt rich people. he is wiretapping every single board members phone. be has access to half of their personal banking information. he has filed them away neatly too!

he is already halfway through solving the theft himself and now his greatest issue is that he cant let his coworkers know he is doing this, and that hes been doing this for a long time and publicly shaming them as the mysterious lunatic who sends neat press releases to the media (though ryan thinks that guys press releases are a bit lacking. clearly not a publicist aha. he could do better)

for no reason theyre going to not learn anything for the hypothetical 1000 chapters in my mind because the writer had to invent new misunderstandings to achieve the perfect romance “will they wont they” for no reason. theyre all going to think that the two others are dating for real at some point.

theyre going to take 500k words to remember they all have two hands despite having blatant carnal relations about twenty chapters ago.

then the series gets cancelled by gabriel brain inc. publicing company and its wrapped up in one chapter and its like thank god. fucking finally theyll get together for sure!

also the other people have various other side plotlines but this explanation is already way too intended but dont you worry. theres so much lore to this joke AU
