A Child's Perception...

Came across this blog and thought it was quite intriguing and so very true... Yesterday I met a 10 year old girl. Her father (who happened to be a producer) introduced me to her and mentioned I was an actress. She looked up at me and said “I can tell you’re a really good actress… because you’re pretty”. Now, as flattered as I was by this sweet little girl, my heart instantly broke. I responded “Thank you, that was very sweet. But listen, just because someone is pretty… does not make them a good actress”. Judging by the look on her father's face, I’d say it was a little out of left field and maybe crossing a line. I couldn’t help but make some sort of an imprint, and maybe say something that would perhaps change this impressionable young girl's view on women and society. Maybe it’ll force her to look deeper or harder next time she watches the Disney channel or a movie. Maybe she won’t overlook the less attractive people in life and find what’s really there. Maybe she will see that a nice smile can be ugly and a less than “perfect” one can be stunning. Or maybe she will forget everything I said and remember me as pretty and crazy. Either way, it was a moment. One I felt was worth writing about. One that reminded me of the world we are raising women in. -Chelsea Hobbs, Actress
