Carlisle Cathedral from West Walls - City of Carlisle.
The spectacular laser display at the amazing City of Lights experience just over a week ago, seen from West Walls looking towards Carlisle Cathedral and The Fratry. It was quite difficult getting a clear shot from this angle due to the narrow pavement and the amount of people and cars passing by, but every now and again there would be a brief lull where I was able to get some shots! The lasers were very fast moving across the sky, and the colour sequence changed sporadically, so I had to be quick to capture certain elements of the light show. These piercing lasers were the most eye-catching and definitely provided a dramatic backdrop to the historic urban scene.

Haven't had a chance to post any images from the spectacular Carlisle City Of Lights: Luguvalium show last weekend due to my recent LPOTY announcements, so here's one from the final evening on Sunday at Carlisle Cathedral.
This area was out of bounds for the majority of the evening due to the ticketed Luxmuralis event within the Cathedral grounds itself, but once all the showings were complete towards the end of the evening I was able to enter this section for the last 20-30 minutes of the JustBeamIt Lasers display. It was a bit of a rush getting set up and finding a suitable composition in the pitch black and, after taking a few images closer up, I wandered further back and noticed this scattering of autumnal foliage which provided some lovely foreground interest.
Luckily it was an extremely calm night, so I was able to do some long exposures without the surrounding foliage moving and being blurred in the final image. I really wished that I had 3 arms as I was using an actual torch to illuminate the ground, as well as the torch on my mobile phone to light up the trees, which was a bit tricky in the dark whilst also trying to operate the camera!
I would've liked a slightly longer window of opportunity to capture some images before the light show ended, but am still pretty happy with the result here despite being hurried.

Following on from yesterday's good news, I can also confirm that my image "Long Lane" has been Commended in the 2022 UK Landscape Photographer of the Year in the Black and White category. I'm feeling very honoured having two of my images featured this year as the standard of the competition is extremely high, and it is also pretty humbling that this is one of them as it is a picture of my home city.
It will be featured in the touring exhibition which begins in London at the end of this month, and also published in the Collection 15 Awards Book.
A big congrats to all the other photographers featured in the competition this year.

Paternoster Row - City of Carlisle.
Am I the only person who loves rainy autumnal mornings like this?
Pictured earlier today, this is the cobbled street of Paternoster Row seen from the grounds of Carlisle Cathedral. I just find that the rain makes everything sparkle; with the illuminated street lamps reflecting on the shiny cobbles, and the glistening interior lights of buildings looking very cosy indeed.
Paternoster literally means "Our Father" (from the opening of the Lord's Prayer) which means that the street name most likely originated from its close proximity to the Cathedral building and grounds. The wall pictured in the foreground here once marked the Cathedral boundary and was raised significantly in 1838 to prevent body-snatching from the graveyard within. However, upon construction of the cobbled Paternoster Row between 1930-31, this wall was lowered to its current height.

Carlisle City Of Lights: Luguvalium kicks of tonight in Carlisle which should provide another fantastic display. This image was captured at last year's light show, with Carlisle Castle seen from Irish Gate Bridge. I really liked this composition with the curving walkway leading towards the Castle and lasers, and I used a slow shutter speed to capture the flowing traffic below.

St Cuthbert's Churchyard - City of Carlisle.
There are so many elements to this scene within St Cuthbert's Churchyard that I love, but my favourite is definitely the red brick facade and spiral staircase of the central building which I made the focal point in the picture. I've had my eye on this shot for a while, but the aforementioned building has been under renovation for a few years and had scaffolding on the roof, which was removed earlier this year. The tree was very useful in framing the scene to the left, but upon moving my camera around to experiment with a few different angles I noticed the same tree reflected in the window of the church so decided to incorporate this into the image too; therefore, framing the scene from both angles. I also really liked how the illuminated lamp post was also reflected in another window.

St Albans Row - City of Carlisle. I captured this image during the week, but was unable to post at the time as unfortunately my computer equipment crashed. While my original laptop is getting looked at, I decided to purchase another so at least I'll have a spare in future if my other one is fixable - and now I'm able to post again 😊 I captured a very similar image of this exact scene only the week before, but on this occasion I loved how some of the surrounding windows were illuminated which wasn't the case the previous time. Even though it was roughly 30 minutes before sunrise here, the foreglow was splendid and provided a lovely backdrop to the Clock Tower of the Old Town Hall. As can be seen from this angle, the north face of the tower has no clock face. Local legend is that the locals didn't want to give Scotland the time of day due to the long and turbulent history at the nearby Border, but the exact reason has never been proven. I used the pattern of the foreground pavement and cobbles to compose the picture. This also helped to lead the eye towards the illuminated street lamp in the centre of the lane, which is known as St Albans Row. For me, this place has a real Dickensian charm and I hope I have managed to convey this through my photography 🙏 #carlislecumbria #carlisle #cityofcarlisle #urbanexploration #urban #urbanexplorer #cumbria #igerscumbria #greatbordercity #oldtownhall #carlisleoldtownhall #historicengland #clocktower #streetlamp #lamppost #architecture #architecturephotography #townhall #stalbansrow #sunrise #foreglow #carlisletownhall #dickensian (at Carlisle, Cumbria) https://www.instagram.com/p/CjOBhZ9jBNv/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

St Albans Row - City of Carlisle. Sunrise this morning captured in the pedestrianised shopping centre at the heart of the City of Carlisle, with the clock tower of the Old Town Hall seen from St Albans Row. The sky suddenly erupted in this dramatic fashion exactly as the clock face struck 7o'clock which was an added bonus. The Clock Tower was constructed in 1717 as an extension to the Town Hall building, which was erected in 1669 to replace the even earlier Moot Hall which dates all the way back to 1345. I also was really pleased as the street lamp remained illuminated just long enough in order for it to stand out from the brickwork behind. #cityofcarlisle #carlisle #cumbria #historicbritain #sunrise #urbanexplorer #igerscumbria #discovercarlisle #stalbansrow #oldtownhall #carlisleoldtownhall #historicengland #clocktower #streetlamp #lamppost #architecture #architecturephotography #uk_greatshots #ukpotd (at Carlisle under the Old Town Hall Clock.) https://www.instagram.com/p/Ci7H05djS7R/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Carlisle Cathedral - City of Carlisle. Some wonderfully atmospheric light captured at Carlisle Cathedral early yesterday morning, with the impressive East Window bathed in the golden hour sunshine. The Golden Hour is a photography term used to describe the period of daytime shortly after sunrise or before sunset, when the sunlight softer and more colourful than when the sun is higher in the sky. Although Carlisle Cathedral is the second smallest in the country, the East Window is the oppositely the largest window of its type. I waited until the sun had risen enough above the surrounding buildings in order to illuminate the whole window, and I was very lucky as not long later it disappeared behind the stormy clouds. #carlislecumbria #carlisle #cityofcarlisle #greatbordercity #carlislecity #igerscumbria #discovercarlisle #carlislecathedral #sunrise #goldenhour #historicalbritain #historicengland #cumbriaguide #thecumbriaguide #architecturephotography #architecture #urbanexplorer #citygrammers #cityview #urbanphotographer #urbanphotography #sonyalpha #sonyshooters (at Carlisle Cathedral) https://www.instagram.com/p/CiPGzBTDl8d/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Carlisle Cathedral Precinct - City of Carlisle. A panoramic view of the Cathedral Precinct in Carlisle during a fiery sunrise last week. Pictured here is the main Cathedral building to the left, but also The Fratry & Cafe in the centre and Prior's Tower to the right. I love the mixture of architecture within the grounds, and although many modifications and additions have been assembled over the centuries, they all combine perfectly and nothing looks out of place. The newest project, The Cathedral Cafe, was only completed a few years ago but still looks like a part of the original architecture, seen here in the centre with the gothic arches. In medieval times the adjoining Fratry building was the dining hall of the Cathedral Priory, so it is quite fitting that the cafe extension has now been constructed here. To the right, The Deanery incorporates a 15th-century pele tower, called The Prior's Tower. Built in 1507, this small bastion was designed to offer a place of refuge against any invasions on the city. For this photo, I combined separate images to show all the buildings in one panoramic frame. I also decided to include the illuminated lamp to the right which stayed lit just long enough to capture in conjunction with the fiery sky overhead. I liked how the sunrise sky kind of encompassed the Cathedral itself, making it stand out from the other buildings. #carlislecumbria #carlisle #cityofcarlisle #urbanexploration #urban #urbanexplorer #cumbria #igerscumbria #greatbordercity #historicalbritain #historicengland #cumbriaguide #thecumbriaguide #cathedralgram #carlislecathedral #thefratry #priorstower #architecturephotography #architecture #sunrise #historic (at Carlisle Cathedral) https://www.instagram.com/p/Ch6n3s4jon0/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Carlisle Cathedral Precinct - City of Carlisle. Sunrise yesterday morning within the Precinct of Carlisle Cathedral, looking towards the Cathedral itself with a glorious sunrise sky behind. This year marks the 900th anniversary of this landmark which was founded by King Henry I as an Augustinian Priory in 1122. Throughout the centuries, the interior and exterior of the structure has had many modifications, as has the surrounding Precinct area which now has the latest addition of the Cathedral Cafe which can be seen to the right here. I wanted to include this large lamp in the composition, and luckily it stayed illuminated long enough for me to capture this panorama including the burning sunrise sky beyond before automatically switching off minutes later. I really liked how the light is also mirrored in the gothic arch window of the Cafe building. #carlislecathedral #cathedralgram #cathedral #historicalbritain #historicengland #carlislecathedralprecinct #architecturephotography #architecture #urbanexplorer #igerscumbria #cumbria #carlisle #cityofcarlisle #greatbordercity #carlislecity #sunrise #carlislecathedralcafe #cathedralcafé (at Carlisle Cathedral) https://www.instagram.com/p/ChwcIOrDtKQ/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Carlisle Cathedral & Lodge from Castle Street - City of Carlisle. The dramatic East Window of Carlisle Cathedral framed by a red rainbow earlier this morning during some stormy conditions, seen from nearby Castle Street. A red rainbow is formed when the sun is on the horizon meaning shorter wavelengths of blue, green and yellow light; leaving a primarily red appearance. The conditions only lasted a few minutes so I had to be quick in order to capture this panorama. Here, the Cathedral Lodge can also be seen which sits just outside the gated Precinct. I really liked the vivid red begonia plant bed to the left which complimented the red light and rainbow, so I decided to include a section of it in the frame too. #carlisle #cityofcarlisle #carlislecathedral #historicalbritain #historicengland #cumbriaguide #thecumbriaguide #ukpotd #urban #igerscumbria #cathedralgram #cathedral #architecturephotography #moodygrams #redrainbow #rainbow #sunrise #castlestreet (at Carlisle Cathedral) https://www.instagram.com/p/CheieiejUi2/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

No. 4 Gasholder from Rome Street - City of Carlisle. Sunrise captured a few days ago only 5 minutes walk from my doorstep. At this time of year it's tough getting out of bed at 4:30am to catch the first light, but it's definitely worth it to witness mornings like this. After this beautiful start, it rained for the duration of the day so I was pleased I made the effort. Here, the Grade II Listed structure of No. 4 Gasholder can be seen on the site of the former Gasworks in Carlisle, dating back to 1878-79. I composed the shot to include the brickwork of the wall which I really liked for foreground interest, while also acting as a leading line into the scene with the gasholder viewed here from Rome Street. #carlislecumbria #carlisle #cityofcarlisle #urbanexploration #urban #urbanexplorer #cumbria #igerscumbria #greatbordercity #romestreet #carlislegasworks #gradeIIlisted #historicalbritain #thecumbriaguide #cumbriaguide #no4gasholder #gasholder #sunrise #uk_greatshots #discovercarlisle (at No. 4 Gasholder, Carlisle Gas Works, Rome Street) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cd_j1dBjlDK/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Carlisle Cathedral - City of Carlisle. Carlisle Cathedral surrounded by blossom trees on a lovely spring morning. Here, the impressive East Window can be seen bathed in the early morning light as the sun appeared for only the first few minutes of the day. The blossom seems to have put on a particularly lovely display this year, and here I liked the combination of both pink and white blooms. #carlislecathedral #cityofcarlisle #carlisle #cumbria #historicbritain #sunrise #historicalbritain #historicengland #cumbriaguide #thecumbriaguide #igerscumbria #blossom #springblossom #blossomtree #urbanexplorer (at Carlisle Cathedral) https://www.instagram.com/p/CdAXoPPDlG1/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

De Ireby's Tower: Carlisle Castle - City of Carlisle. Captured only a couple of hours ago, this wonderfully atmospheric sunset lasted barely a few minutes as the light disappeared over the horizon. From this angle I really liked how the setting sun illuminated the glass in the lamp post, casting a lovely warm hue. I composed the picture to include the cobbles leading up to the entrance gateway of De Ireby's Tower, including the Bridge over Outer Moat, which are both Grade I Listed structures. #carlislecumbria #carlisle #cityofcarlisle #carlislecastle #englishheritage #historicalbritain #historicengland #cumbriaguide #thecumbriaguide #ukpotd #sunset #deirebystower #igerscumbria #urbanexplorer (at Carlisle Castle) https://www.instagram.com/p/CcOZxNVDG8d/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Carlisle Cathedral - City of Carlisle. Yesterday's sublime spring sunrise at Carlisle Cathedral. I absolutely love this magnolia tree which sits near the magnificent East Window. I planned to capture it last year but unfortunately the flowers were damaged by a hard frost before they reached their peak, but luckily this year they have remained unscathed due to the lovely weather over the last week or so and it is currently in full bloom. The sunrise was truly beautiful with the morning sun illuminating the window - which is the largest of it's type in England - providing a wonderful backdrop to the tree itself. It certainly feels like Spring has well and truly sprung 💮🌤️ #carlislecathedral #cityofcarlisle #carlisle #spring #magnolia #magnoliatree #cathedralgram #cathedral #historicalbritain #historicengland #urbanexplorer #sunrise #ukpotd #uk_greatshots #discovercarlisle #cumbriaguide #thecumbriaguide #igerscumbria (at Carlisle Cathedral) https://www.instagram.com/p/CbhRfG-jMWa/?utm_medium=tumblr
