Carlisle Cathedral - City of Carlisle. Some wonderfully atmospheric light captured at Carlisle Cathedral early yesterday morning, with the impressive East Window bathed in the golden hour sunshine. The Golden Hour is a photography term used to describe the period of daytime shortly after sunrise or before sunset, when the sunlight softer and more colourful than when the sun is higher in the sky. Although Carlisle Cathedral is the second smallest in the country, the East Window is the oppositely the largest window of its type. I waited until the sun had risen enough above the surrounding buildings in order to illuminate the whole window, and I was very lucky as not long later it disappeared behind the stormy clouds. #carlislecumbria #carlisle #cityofcarlisle #greatbordercity #carlislecity #igerscumbria #discovercarlisle #carlislecathedral #sunrise #goldenhour #historicalbritain #historicengland #cumbriaguide #thecumbriaguide #architecturephotography #architecture #urbanexplorer #citygrammers #cityview #urbanphotographer #urbanphotography #sonyalpha #sonyshooters (at Carlisle Cathedral) https://www.instagram.com/p/CiPGzBTDl8d/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Spectacular photos from @historicalbritain . . . Tantallon Castle, Scotland. . . - From top to bottom Scotland is filled with beautiful castles from once powerful now romantic medieval ruins through to stately homes still habitable today. One of Scotland's most beautiful medieval castles is definately Tantallon Castle. Set upon sea battered cliffs looking out to the remote Bass Rock, the now romantic ruins are surrounded on all sides by astonishing natural scenery. At its height, the castle was a massive fortress and though much has been lost over the years to war and the sea, a large part of its immense outer walls is still standing for you too climb up and explore. - The castle is currently owned by @historicscotland and entry will cost you around £6 with parking available just a short walk from the site. - Built in the mid to late 14th century, Tantallon was one of the last castles of it's era to be built in Scotland. Its formidable high and thick walls surrounded by deep thick cut ditches and earthworks all made this a main stronghold of it's owners the powerful Red Douglases. Twice they clashed with the Scottish crown and twice the castle would prove too much for both seiges of James IV(1491) and James V(1528). Tantallon could not resist Oliver Cromwells seige of 1651 however and the battered and destroyed castle woukd never recover. . . Fun Facts!💡 • Cromwells artillery took only 12 days to breach the castle's mighty walls. . • In the 14th Century the Douglas family split into the two factions known as the Black and Red Douglases. . . . . . . . . . #historicalbritain #freetourguide #historicscotland #tantallon #tantalloncastle #castles #scottishcoast #northberwick #visitscotland #lovescotland #instascotland #historicenvironmentscotland #bassrock #scottishborders #scotland #castle #europeanhistory #history #historicsite #historicalsite #castlesofscotland #scotland_greatshots #scotlandsbeauty #scotlandlover #historygeek #castlehunter #castlehunting https://www.instagram.com/p/CDwPYhiMT9B/?igshid=1ns30fnnq74yg

Carlisle Cathedral Precinct - City of Carlisle. A panoramic view of the Cathedral Precinct in Carlisle during a fiery sunrise last week. Pictured here is the main Cathedral building to the left, but also The Fratry & Cafe in the centre and Prior's Tower to the right. I love the mixture of architecture within the grounds, and although many modifications and additions have been assembled over the centuries, they all combine perfectly and nothing looks out of place. The newest project, The Cathedral Cafe, was only completed a few years ago but still looks like a part of the original architecture, seen here in the centre with the gothic arches. In medieval times the adjoining Fratry building was the dining hall of the Cathedral Priory, so it is quite fitting that the cafe extension has now been constructed here. To the right, The Deanery incorporates a 15th-century pele tower, called The Prior's Tower. Built in 1507, this small bastion was designed to offer a place of refuge against any invasions on the city. For this photo, I combined separate images to show all the buildings in one panoramic frame. I also decided to include the illuminated lamp to the right which stayed lit just long enough to capture in conjunction with the fiery sky overhead. I liked how the sunrise sky kind of encompassed the Cathedral itself, making it stand out from the other buildings. #carlislecumbria #carlisle #cityofcarlisle #urbanexploration #urban #urbanexplorer #cumbria #igerscumbria #greatbordercity #historicalbritain #historicengland #cumbriaguide #thecumbriaguide #cathedralgram #carlislecathedral #thefratry #priorstower #architecturephotography #architecture #sunrise #historic (at Carlisle Cathedral) https://www.instagram.com/p/Ch6n3s4jon0/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Carlisle Cathedral Precinct - City of Carlisle. Sunrise yesterday morning within the Precinct of Carlisle Cathedral, looking towards the Cathedral itself with a glorious sunrise sky behind. This year marks the 900th anniversary of this landmark which was founded by King Henry I as an Augustinian Priory in 1122. Throughout the centuries, the interior and exterior of the structure has had many modifications, as has the surrounding Precinct area which now has the latest addition of the Cathedral Cafe which can be seen to the right here. I wanted to include this large lamp in the composition, and luckily it stayed illuminated long enough for me to capture this panorama including the burning sunrise sky beyond before automatically switching off minutes later. I really liked how the light is also mirrored in the gothic arch window of the Cafe building. #carlislecathedral #cathedralgram #cathedral #historicalbritain #historicengland #carlislecathedralprecinct #architecturephotography #architecture #urbanexplorer #igerscumbria #cumbria #carlisle #cityofcarlisle #greatbordercity #carlislecity #sunrise #carlislecathedralcafe #cathedralcafé (at Carlisle Cathedral) https://www.instagram.com/p/ChwcIOrDtKQ/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Carlisle Cathedral & Lodge from Castle Street - City of Carlisle. The dramatic East Window of Carlisle Cathedral framed by a red rainbow earlier this morning during some stormy conditions, seen from nearby Castle Street. A red rainbow is formed when the sun is on the horizon meaning shorter wavelengths of blue, green and yellow light; leaving a primarily red appearance. The conditions only lasted a few minutes so I had to be quick in order to capture this panorama. Here, the Cathedral Lodge can also be seen which sits just outside the gated Precinct. I really liked the vivid red begonia plant bed to the left which complimented the red light and rainbow, so I decided to include a section of it in the frame too. #carlisle #cityofcarlisle #carlislecathedral #historicalbritain #historicengland #cumbriaguide #thecumbriaguide #ukpotd #urban #igerscumbria #cathedralgram #cathedral #architecturephotography #moodygrams #redrainbow #rainbow #sunrise #castlestreet (at Carlisle Cathedral) https://www.instagram.com/p/CheieiejUi2/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Ashness Bridge - Lake District. A truly beautiful sunset captured at the famous Ashness Bridge yesterday evening. I was originally planning on ascending one of the nearby hills, but upon arriving at this location I couldn't resist stopping due to the sublime warm light and also the fact that the place was deserted. After photographing a few close-ups of the bridge, I noticed the sunlight filtering nicely through the trees so decided to change position and capture a wider angled perspective to include the rays. I really liked the pattern of the rocks in the foreground leading perfectly towards the iconic Lakeland vista, including Skiddaw in the background; showcasing the bridge in it's wider surroundings. #ashnessbridge #ashnessgill #skiddaw #falconcrags #nationaltrust #historicengland #historicalbritain #sunset #landscape_captures #sonyalpha #sonyshooters #lakedistrictnationalpark #lakedistrictnpa #lakelandphoto #igerscumbria #lakedistrict #fromlakelandwithlove #visitthelakes #thelakelanders #thecumbriaguide #cumbriaguide #rural_love #thegreatoutdoors #picturetokeep_nature #ordnancesurvey (at Ashness Bridge) https://www.instagram.com/p/CeUI0nyDF34/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

No. 4 Gasholder from Rome Street - City of Carlisle. Sunrise captured a few days ago only 5 minutes walk from my doorstep. At this time of year it's tough getting out of bed at 4:30am to catch the first light, but it's definitely worth it to witness mornings like this. After this beautiful start, it rained for the duration of the day so I was pleased I made the effort. Here, the Grade II Listed structure of No. 4 Gasholder can be seen on the site of the former Gasworks in Carlisle, dating back to 1878-79. I composed the shot to include the brickwork of the wall which I really liked for foreground interest, while also acting as a leading line into the scene with the gasholder viewed here from Rome Street. #carlislecumbria #carlisle #cityofcarlisle #urbanexploration #urban #urbanexplorer #cumbria #igerscumbria #greatbordercity #romestreet #carlislegasworks #gradeIIlisted #historicalbritain #thecumbriaguide #cumbriaguide #no4gasholder #gasholder #sunrise #uk_greatshots #discovercarlisle (at No. 4 Gasholder, Carlisle Gas Works, Rome Street) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cd_j1dBjlDK/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Carlisle Cathedral - City of Carlisle. Carlisle Cathedral surrounded by blossom trees on a lovely spring morning. Here, the impressive East Window can be seen bathed in the early morning light as the sun appeared for only the first few minutes of the day. The blossom seems to have put on a particularly lovely display this year, and here I liked the combination of both pink and white blooms. #carlislecathedral #cityofcarlisle #carlisle #cumbria #historicbritain #sunrise #historicalbritain #historicengland #cumbriaguide #thecumbriaguide #igerscumbria #blossom #springblossom #blossomtree #urbanexplorer (at Carlisle Cathedral) https://www.instagram.com/p/CdAXoPPDlG1/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

De Ireby's Tower: Carlisle Castle - City of Carlisle. Captured only a couple of hours ago, this wonderfully atmospheric sunset lasted barely a few minutes as the light disappeared over the horizon. From this angle I really liked how the setting sun illuminated the glass in the lamp post, casting a lovely warm hue. I composed the picture to include the cobbles leading up to the entrance gateway of De Ireby's Tower, including the Bridge over Outer Moat, which are both Grade I Listed structures. #carlislecumbria #carlisle #cityofcarlisle #carlislecastle #englishheritage #historicalbritain #historicengland #cumbriaguide #thecumbriaguide #ukpotd #sunset #deirebystower #igerscumbria #urbanexplorer (at Carlisle Castle) https://www.instagram.com/p/CcOZxNVDG8d/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Carlisle Cathedral - City of Carlisle. Yesterday's sublime spring sunrise at Carlisle Cathedral. I absolutely love this magnolia tree which sits near the magnificent East Window. I planned to capture it last year but unfortunately the flowers were damaged by a hard frost before they reached their peak, but luckily this year they have remained unscathed due to the lovely weather over the last week or so and it is currently in full bloom. The sunrise was truly beautiful with the morning sun illuminating the window - which is the largest of it's type in England - providing a wonderful backdrop to the tree itself. It certainly feels like Spring has well and truly sprung 💮🌤️ #carlislecathedral #cityofcarlisle #carlisle #spring #magnolia #magnoliatree #cathedralgram #cathedral #historicalbritain #historicengland #urbanexplorer #sunrise #ukpotd #uk_greatshots #discovercarlisle #cumbriaguide #thecumbriaguide #igerscumbria (at Carlisle Cathedral) https://www.instagram.com/p/CbhRfG-jMWa/?utm_medium=tumblr

Amazing Castle from @historicalbritain Dunstanburgh Castle, England. - Due to it's remote location amongst the rugged, sea battered ancient Northumberland coastline, Dunstanburgh Castle has got to be in the running for one of the most beautiful aswell as one of the most photogenic castles in all of Britain. A highly popular site for photographers and painters such as JMW Turner, Dunstanburgh certainly rarely fails to deliver beauty and inspiration as it juts out into the wild North Sea. Due to the castles remoteness however the nearest car park is infact a few miles away in the small town of Craster. Luckily for anyone willing to walk the distance to the castle though because the walk up the natural coastline is astonishingly captivating and well worth every bit of the potentially muddy journey. The castle remains still seen today were first built in 1313 on thr orders of 14th century Englands most powerful and wealthy men, Earl Thomas of Lancaster. During his second rebellion against King Edward II, Thomas would be captured following defeat at the battle of Boroughbridge in 1322 after failing to retreat north to Dunstanburgh. Humiliation followed for Thomas as he was executed by beheading within the walls of the massive Pontefract Castle in Yorkshire, a castle he actually owned. The castle would next see major action during the bloody Wars of the Roses as it was used as a Lancastrian stronghold in the North, sufferring from two separate Yorkist seiges in the process. . . Fun Facts!💡 • The interior of the castle covered an area so immense that much of the land inside would remain unused throughout it's life. . • In 1940, after the threat of invasion from Nazi Germany increased dramatically with the fall of Norway, the castle was integrated into Britain's North East coastal defences. . . . #historicalbritain #freetourguide #englishheritage #dunstanburghcastle #dunstanburgh #northumberland #europeancastle #castlesofinstagram #castlesofeurope #englishcastles #englishhistory #castles #castle #visitnorthumberland #northumberlandcoast #northumberland_pics #visitengland #historicengla https://www.instagram.com/p/B9g2NkFgIVC/?igshid=1bppilxcwb63z
