Limassol Salt Lake is the largest inland body of water on the island of Cyprus, covering 4.11 square miles (10.65 sq km). Since its deepest point is only about three feet (one meter), it frequent dries and refills, causing its appearance to vary from the Overview perspective. It is considered one of the eastern Mediterranean region’s most important wetlands, providing a seasonal habitat for thousands of greater flamingos.

Can Flamingos Be Blue Or Black? (Do They Exist?) By NWC Staff Updated on July 10, 2021
If you’ve ever been to a zoo and seen the flamingos exhibit, then you already know that flamingos are pink in color. In fact, it is well known that flamingos are pink as a result of their diet. And if they change their diet, then they lose that pink hue. But is pink the only color that flamingos can be? You may wonder – do black flamingos exist? Or blue flamingos? We’re here to answer this question once and for all. Are There Blue Flamingos? You may have seen some talk on the internet about a rare blue flamingo. Is it true that flamingos can be blue? No. There are no known cases in history of blue flamingos. This is just a myth perpetuated by people on the internet. Do Black Flamingos Exist?
Only one other black flamingo has ever been spotted in the wild before and that was in Israel in 2013.
Do Black Flamingos Exist? While there is no such thing as a blue flamingo, there existence of black flamingos is a true one. That’s right. Yes, black flamingos do exist, but they are very rare. In fact, only two have ever been seen, though some people think it is really just one that was seen in two different locations. An extremely rare black flamingo, thought to be only one in the world, has been filmed on the island of Cyprus in 2015. The bird’s unusual plumage comes from a genetic condition called melanism, which causes excessive pigment to darken feathers. It’s occasionally seen in hawks and ducks, but has only been observed in a greater flamingo once before, in a bird filmed in Israel in 2013.
Flamingoes can migrate long distances, so it’s “definitely possible,” that the Cyprus sighting is actually the same bird, says Felicity Arengo, a conservationist at the American Museum of Natural History. Are Yellow Flamingos Real? If you saw some flamingos in the wild and thought one looked to be yellow in color, then your eyes are not fooling you. If a flamingo eats the right things, they can appear to be a sort of pale yellow in color. Coloration of a flamingo’s legs and feet varies according to species – from yellow to orange or pink-red. The Andean flamingo is the only species that has yellow legs and feet. Are Rainbow Flamingos Real? You might be wondering if flamingos come in any other colors. You may even have seen rainbow colored flamingos online and wonder if those are real. No, rainbow flamingos are not real. If you see real live flamingos that are rainbow colored, then it means someone has dyed their feathers. What Color Are Flamingos When They’re Born? As you may already know, baby flamingos aren’t born that same right pink as adult flamingos. Baby flamingos are born grey or white, and turn pink over the first couple of years of their lives. Final Word As you can see, there is some variation in color among the various flamingo species, though most of the time you’re only going to see pink flamingos. But, keep your eyes open for that rare black flamingo in the wild.

Some populations[which?] are short distance migrants, and sightings north of the breeding range are relatively frequent; however, given the species' popularity in captivity, whether or not these are truly wild individuals is a matter of some debate. A single bird was seen on North Keeling Island (Cocos (Keeling) Islands) in 1988. This is the largest species of flamingo, averaging 110–150 cm (43–60 in) tall and weighing 2–4 kg (4.4–8.8 lbs). The largest male flamingos have been recorded at up to 187 cm (74 in) tall and 4.5 kg (10 lbs). It is closely related to the American flamingo and Chilean flamingo, with which it has sometimes been considered conspecific, but that treatment is now widely seen (e.g., by the American and British Ornithologists' Union) as incorrect and based on insufficient evidence. Flamingos, Calpe (No. 4)
It is found in parts of Africa, southern Asia (Bangladesh and coastal regions of Pakistan, India, and Sri Lanka), the Middle East (Bahrain, Cyprus, Iraq, Iran, Israel, Kuwait, Lebanon, Palestine, Qatar, Turkey and the United Arab Emirates) and southern Europe (including Albania, Greece, Italy, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Bulgaria, Portugal, Spain, and South of France). The most northern breeding spot is the Zwillbrocker Venn in western Germany, close to the border with the Netherlands. They have been recorded breeding in the United Arab Emirates at three different locations in the Abu Dhabi Emirate. In Gujarat, a state of India, flamingos can be observed at the Nal Sarovar Bird Sanctuary, Khijadiya Bird Sanctuary, Flamingo City, and in the Thol Bird Sanctuary. They remain there during the entire winter season.
The greater flamingo resides in mudflats and shallow coastal lagoons with salt water. Using its feet, the bird stirs up the mud, then sucks water through its bill and filters out small shrimp, seeds, blue-green algae, microscopic organisms, and mollusks. The greater flamingo feeds with its head down, and its upper jaw is movable and not rigidly fixed to its skull.
Like all flamingos, this species lays a single chalky-white egg on a mud mound.
The typical lifespan in captivity, according to Basel Zoo, is over 60 years. In the wild, the average lifespan is 30 – 40 years.

(ESA)  Cyprus
The third largest island in the Mediterranean, Cyprus is about 240 km long and 100 km wide. It is located on the Anatolian plate and therefore belongs geologically to Asia, but politically it is a member of the EU.
The Troodos mountains dominate the centre of the island and include Mount Olympus, the country’s highest mountain at 1952 m.
Along the northern coast, the smaller Kyrenia Range rises suddenly from the plains.
The capital and largest city, Nicosia, sits between the two mountain ranges. Since 1974 the island has been split between the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot populations, with the line of separation running through the city.
East of Nicosia lies the Mesaoria plain, which is the agricultural heartland of the island – but depends greatly on winter rainfall and irrigation, limiting its production. High summer temperatures further exacerbate the situation. Thousands of years ago the area was covered by thick forest, but most of this was cut down to provide wood for the Ptolemaic dynasty’s navy in the 1st century BC. Today, much of the plain is covered by hard-packed calcium carbonate.
At the southernmost area of Cyprus, we can see the Limassol Salt Lake, the largest inland body of water on the island. Covering over 10 sqr km, the lake is an important stopover for birds migrating between Africa and Europe, with greater flamingos spending the winter months there.
Further up the coast to the east is the seasonal Larnaca Salt Lake, which also sees flamingos.

Greater Flamingo at The Souss-Massa National Park, Morocco - March 2009 by SaffyH The Greater Flamingo (Phoenicopterus roseus) is the most widespread species of the flamingo family. It is found in parts of Africa, southern Asia (coastal regions of Pakistan and India) and southern Europe (including Spain, Sardinia, Albania, Turkey, Greece, Cyprus, Portugal, and the Camargue region of France). Some populations are short distance migrants, and records north of the breeding range are relatively frequent; however, given the species' popularity in captivity whether these are truly wild individuals is a matter of some debate. A single bird was seen on North Keeling Island (Cocos (Keeling) Islands) in 1988. Greater flamingo is the state bird of Gujarat, India. This is the largest species of flamingo, averaging 110-150 cm (43-60 in) tall and weighing 2-4 kg (4.4-8.8 lbs). The largest male flamingoes have been recorded at up to 187 cm (74 in) tall and 4.5 kg (10 lbs).[2]. It is closely related to the American Flamingo and Chilean Flamingo, with which it is has sometimes been considered conspecific, but that treatment is now widely (e.g. by the American and British Ornithologists' Union) as incorrect and based on a lack of evidence. Like all flamingos, this species lays a single chalky-white egg on a mud mound. Most of the plumage is pinkish-white, but the wing coverts are red and the primary and secondary flight feathers are black. The bill is pink with a restricted black tip, and the legs are entirely pink. The call is a goose-like honking. The oldest known greater flamingo, a resident of the Adelaide Zoo in Australia, is at least 75 years old. The bird's exact age is not known; however, he was already a mature adult when he arrived in Adelaide in 1933.[3] en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greater_Flamingo https://flic.kr/p/6i51Ls
