Queer Star Wars Characters (Round 3): Cross-continuity overflow
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sav Malagan | Identity: bisexual | Media: The High Republic
Sav Malagan is the main protagonist of the 2022 run of The High Republic Adventures, where she is an adventurous Jedi Padawan who temporarily abandons the Jedi path to join Maz Kanata’s pirate crew. To save Maz from the ragtag gang of darksiders known as Dank Graks, Sav pretends to join them. With them, she began to grow (romantically) close with Saya Keem. She fought beside Saya in the chaos of the Battle of Jedha. Despite their closeness, Saya betrayed Sav when her desire to free Maz was revealed. Feeling guilty about how she hurt Saya, she returned to Maz’s pirate crew to join them in freeing Takodana from the control of the Dank Graks. That adventure made her realize she did actually want to be a Jedi, especially since she now had the more suitable Tera Sinube as her master.
In Phase II, she is the wise and badass Marshal of the Jedi Temple on Takodana, a friend of Maz Kanata. There she single handedly defeated most of the Nihil attacking Takodana, although the temple was lost in the process. Then she traveled to Branchii, where she became a mentor to the young Jedi Knight Lily Tora-Asi. After the Temple there was destroyed by a Nihil attack, she joined Lily in ignoring the Council’s “return to Coruscant” order to protect the sector from Nihil stragglers.
Juhani | Identity: lesbian | Media: Knights of the Old Republic
Juhani from 2003’s Knights of the Old Republic was the first ever queer character in Star Wars. The Mandalorian Wars rendered Juhani’s family refugees on Taris after the destruction of their homeplanet of Cathar. Juhani was enslaved due to her mother’s debts, but was liberated by the Revanchists when they freed Taris from Mandalorian rule. This inspired her to travel to Dantooine to train as a Jedi, where she fell in love with her fellow padawan Belaya. For her final trial, she was tricked into believing she killed her master when consumed by the Dark Side. She fled into the wilds of Dantooine, her turmoil agitating the wildlife. Dealing with Juhani is the player’s final trial as a Jedi, and they can either kill Juhani or handle the situation diplomatically and return her to the light. She then joins the player as a companion.
Traveling together, Juhani grows close to Revan and can be romanced by female Revans (the game shipped with the gender flag for romance bugged, but she is intended to be a lesbian). She takes the player turning out to be Revan very well, as she never truly accepted that Revan turned to the Dark Side due to how the Revanchists saved her. If the Dark Side ending is chosen, the player must kill Juhani.
Juhani strives to be a good Jedi, strongly believing in their principles. However, she struggles with the in-born aggression and heightened anger of her species, which with her perfectionism creates a vicious cycle that drives her towards the Dark Side. Other than Revan, she kept herself separate from the rest of the crew of the Ebon Hawk, especially Canderous Ordo due to the Mandalorian’s genocide of her people. She was also full of bitterness regarding the racism she faced on Taris, and struggled not to lash out against all humans because of it.

“That Jedi I told you my grandma fell for on Jedha—Sav Malagán? Nana Saya was ready to leave her group, the Dank Graks, and run away together. But the girl said she couldn’t go with her. Broke Nana’s heart. They became close friends later and finally talked about it, what had happened—something about Jedi not forming powerful attachments, and also my grandma was a war criminal?”
...
“That girl on Jedha was apparently not the only Jedi she’d gotten tangled with.”
- Zyle Keem in Escape from Valo, chapter 21

Tumblr media Tumblr media
Alak | Identity: mlm | Media: The High Republic Adventures 2022
Alak was a member of Maz Kanata’s pirate crew. He was born to one of the ruling families of the Scarlet Skulls, a brutal group of mute assassins. However, the night before the initiation a baby was born, and seeing her innocence and the brutal life she’d be forced into, made him realize he couldn’t become a full Scarlet Skull, or let the same thing happen to her. He left, and eight years later he returned to destroy the cult and rescue her. She became his adoptive daughter and pirate prodigy Quiet Shan. He was part of Maz’s crew when she opposed the Dank Graks, a motley gang of Dark-siders attempting to take over Takodana. He was in love with the famous pirate hunter Raf Thatchburn. Their opposed occupations made things very difficult. When they talked over holo, the rest of the crew observed to make sure he didn’t give any information away. Chasing after the Graks when the kidnapped Maz led him and the crew to the Battle of Jedha, where he had a conversation about love with Dexter Jettster (who talked about his QPR with Maz). Shan overheard this conversation, and when Raf was also drawn into the chaos of the battle of Jedha, she saved his life. This made Raf realize he needed to be someone who deserved Alak and Shan’s trust, and he helped save Maz and Takodana from the Graks. He quit his job as a pirate hunter, becoming a pirate to properly get with Alak.
Vernestra Rwoh | Identity: aroace | Media: the High Republic Phase I
Gifted Kid SyndromeTM. Vernestra Rwoh is primarily a character in the middle grade High Republic novels (as appearing in the YA Out of the Shadows). A prodigy, she solves the problem with adults having to be out of the picture in middle grade novels by being one of the youngest Jedi Knights ever- being knighted at 15 after an unusually short term as Stellan Gios’ padawan also from an abnormally young age. As a padawan, she would fall unconscious when traveling through hyperspace and have visions, something that resolved itself on its own (unknown to any of the characters, this was an unrealized ability to navigate hyperspace). Following a vision from the Force, she secretly modified her lightsaber to become a light-whip.
She was on the Steady Wing, a diplomatic ship, that blew up and killed all of the adults. Working with the prodigious inventor Avon Starros, Honesty Weft, and the padawan Imri Canatros, they survived and captured the Nihil who sabotaged the ship. She also talked Imri down from the Dark Side and became his new master, despite their similar ages. During the Attack on the Republic Fair, she joined Ram Jamoram and Lula Talisola, who both looked up to her, in restoring communications on the planet. Later, she and her Padawan investigated a gravity well generator the Nihil were working on. During that time, her hyperspace visions were reactivated by Mari San Tekka. She was with the old woman when she finally managed to die, denying the Nihil any new Paths. She gave Venrestra one final path.
Later, following visions of Avon being in danger, she and Imri found that the Nihil were kidnapping children to be made into recruits on the planet Dalna. By leading the Jedi of the Dalna temple to the camp, they were able to alert Starlight Beacon and evacuate the planet before it was geologically destabilized by the Nihil’s kyber crystal experiments. She was in the top part of Starlight Beacon when it was destroyed and participated in the group effort to hold it together. She presumably escaped. As a prodigy, she had the maturity and serenity expected of a Jedi. Fear didn’t trouble her, but she struggled with self-doubt, wondering if she could really be a Jedi Knight and Master to someone the same age as her. She also understood not to let her friendship with Avon cause her to be more worried about her than the missing children on Dalna (commentary with how her being aroace doesn’t make her immune to attachment). She was also a terrible pilot. She has been confirmed to appear in Acolyte.

Queer Star Wars Characters (Round 2): General Bracket Match 14
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Kitrep Soh | Identity: gay | Media: The High Republic The Rising Storm
Kitrep Soh was the son of the Chancellor of the Republic Lina Soh. A shy person, he disliked how he had become a newsworthy person since his mother’s election as chancellor. He didn’t begrudge her for this, and saw her as a good mother and always making enough time for him. This was despite the fact she made him attend the Great Fair on Valo even though it was a media event.
When the Republic delegation arrived on Valo, he was immediately drawn to the mayor of Valo’s son Jom Lariin. While he hated being dragged across the fair with his mother, once he got over his initial awkwardness with Jom, they were able to strike up quite the conversation. The next day, the two teenagers snuck away from their parties to board the Innovator (a ship on display at the fair) for a secret date. Unfortunately, the Innovator was one of the Nihil’s first targets when they attacked Valo. The two boys, an attendant, and a Quarren guest attempted to find a way to escape the damaged ship. The Jedi Bell Zettifar was able to rescue them and lead them and several other survivors to safety. After the attack on Valo, he spent most of his time by his comatose mother’s side, only leaving to say goodbye to Jom. He kissed Jom, not caring that cam-droids were recording. He would never play to the cameras, but now he wasn’t afraid of the public role he had been forced into.
Raf Thatchburn | Identity: mlm | Media: High Republic Adventures (2022)
Raf Thatchburn was a pirate hunter employed by Galactic Antipiracy Command. Despite that, he was in love with the pirate Alak. The two would chat over holo, supervised by the rest of the pirate crew Alak was a part of to make sure he didn’t give any information away that could hurt the crew. He tracked Maz’s crew and the Dank Graks to the battle of Jedha, where his Correlian hound caught the scent of Sav Mallagan (a Jedi padawan undercover with the Graks). She gave her lightsabers to the hound, who brought it back to Raf. Reeling about why Sav would trust him with her lightsabers, his life was saved by Quiet Shan, Alak’s adopted daughter- because of how happy he made Alak. Realizing that all these people were treating him way better than he deserved, he decided to quit his job and become a pirate. He allowed himself to be captured by the Graks, gave up half of Sav’s lightsaber, and so that he could give her the other half and they could stop the Graks from taking control of Takodana. Now a pirate and a member of Maz’s crew, he and Alak could actually be together.

Saya Keem | Identity: lesbian | Media: High Republic Adventures (2022)
Saya Keem was a force-sensitive member of the ragtag gang of dark-siders the Dank Graks. She ran away from her home on Iridonia because of its restrictive nature, where she became the youngest member of the gang. When the runaway Jedi Sav Malagan joined them, she developed feelings for her and they grew close. However, the leader of the Graks knew Sav was a Jedi from the beginning and tasked Saya Keem to fight with Sav through the chaos of the Battle of Jedha while the rest of the Dank Graks took Takodana. Saya attempted to keep her busy, even after Sav demanded to know where Maz was. When pressed, Saya begged Sav to run away with her, to be the best pirates together. But Sav couldn’t abandon Maz, leaving Saya behind on Jedha and crushing her heart.
Kor Plouth | Identity: wlw | Meda: The High Republic Phase II
Kor Plouth was the Force-sensitive daughter of the Herald of the Path of the Open Hand. While most Force-sensitive children were abandoned in the nearby town, Kor’s parents decided to keep her. She grew up to believe fervently in the Path and suppressed her Force powers the best she could. She became the girlfriend of another Path member, Yana Ro. She tried to convince Kor to join her in leaving Path and traveling the galaxy. They both became members of the Children, a group of operatives that stole Force-artifacts for the Path. Kor desperately wanted her parents to approve of Yana, but because of Yana’s cynicism they didn’t in her lifetime. While she was a Children, Kor was still very compassionate and unlike her girlfriend didn’t approve of killing to complete their missions.
The Mother agreed that Yana could leave after doing one last mission for the Path. However this mission was a trap to kill all the surviving Children. As Kor died in Yana’s arms, she confessed that if Yana had asked, she would have left her family and all she’d ever known. After her death, Kor haunted Yana, and it’s unclear if it was a manifestation of Yana’s own mind and her survivor’s guilt or some aspect of her girlfriend that couldn’t dissolve into the Force.

Collective Slicer | Identity: nonbinary | Media: Resistance Reborn
This unnamed slicer was a member of the Collective, a late New Republic era antiauthoritarian slicer group. Although not initially aligned with the Resistance, they opposed the First Order. This slicer received a list of FO political prisoners on Corellia from the aide Monti Calay, which they gave to the organization’s benefactor to auction to the Resistance. A confident and mysterious figure, they were skilled in the in-person parts of espionage as well. They had a cyberpunk-ass appearance with makeup that foiled FO facial recognition. The Collective is a very interesting organization, which like a lot in Resistance Reborn, set up potential future plot threads for the First Order-Resistance War which likely won’t be followed up on for a long time in light of TROS’ failure. Their logo is an ouroboros.

Tal Veridian | Identity: wlw | Media:  “The Backup Backup Plan”
Tal Veridian was an administrator of Cloud City, who considered herself Lando’s second in command (who cares about Lobot). She stayed behind after Cloud City was evacuated, which left her feeling bitter towards Lando. Unlike what the title “Cloud City administrator” implies, she was much more involved in day to day technical operations and closer to the support staff and common people than the wealthy Lando focused on. Her lover was the Imperial lieutenant Ela Radodan, who informed her that the Empire was about to “deport” a group of miners to a Mining Guild mine to cow the people of the Cloud City. She cajoled the Cloud Car mechanics Kiren and Baudu to join her in liberating these people. The plan quickly went south and the three of them ended up captured and set to be deported with the people they planned to save. However, Ela faked the destruction of the transport and allowed the operation to ultimately succeed. What happened to the two lovers afterwards is unknown, but we can assume they were involved in founding the Uprising which would oppose the Iron Blockade

Zian/Hackrack Bep | Identity: mlm couple | Media: The High Republic Mission to Disaster
Zian was the husband of Hackrack Bep, the vice president of Dalna. Their son, Theo, was kidnapped by Kara Xoo’s Tempest to hold the Dalnan government hostage and prevent them from taking action against the Nihil encampment and recruitment/kidnapping center on their planet. After the Jedi of Dalna, Vernestra Rwoh, and Imri Cantaros rescued Hackrack’s son and uncovered that the Dalnan president was working with the Nihil, Hackrack assumed control of the government. Finding that Nihil kyber research had geologically doomed the planet, he traveled to Starlight Beacon to ask for their help evacuating the planet. After doing so, he was assassinated by Nihil-aligned Senator Ghirra Starros. Despite that, Starlight Beacon was able to evacuate the population of Dalna, presumably including Zian and Theo. Although given Starlight Beacon was destroyed soon after, they may still have perished. As fairly minor characters, they both have pretty generic personalities- grieving and worried parents grateful for the help from the Jedi, with Hackrack the hand-tied politician able to do things only after the protagonists fix things first. Zian seems to be a stay at home father.

Domina Tagge | Identity: wlw | Media: Doctor Aphra comics
Domina Tagge is the brutal girlboss head of the Tagge megacorporation. After Aphra “killed” Ronen Tagge, she hired bounty hunters to capture Aphra, but instead of executing her, she offered the rogue archeologist a job to acquire for her a Nihil Path engine. She has a crush on Aphra, but flirts in such an unhinged way it had to be clarified by the author. When her brother Silas hired Boushh’s crew to assassinate the rest of the board, she defended herself using the lightsaber inspired proto-blade, killed Silas, and then recruited Boushh’s crew. They defended her against another Crimson Dawn coup, which she had arranged to flush out the Crimson Dawn operatives in the corporation. She’s peak “if you want a girlfriend who would murder you” material.
She originated in the 1977 Marvel Star Wars comic series, hence her on the nose name and unadorned design. This makes her the first character to originate in Legends brought into the New EU and made queer. In Legends, she was force sensitive. It's unknown if her New EU counterpart is as well, although her skill with the protoblade suggests it.
