#Draenei Cuisine

Text
like 7 years ago I wrote this whole long post in a response to an ask where someone asked me what real-world cultural group I thought the Draenei were based on. and I did a bunch of research and really put thought into it but then I deleted it almost immediately because this is tumblr and I thought someone would feel offended by it. and i didnt and still do not want to deal with those sorts of things online.
but I kind of wish I hadnt deleted it, because there were a lot of interesting thoughts in there about the religious and ethnic bases that draenei lore calls upon. and even their aesthetics and cuisine seem to suggest a myriad of different influences. to this day i havent seen a more unique fantasy race.. except maybe in Wildstar, which barely lasted, but was chock-full of fresh ideas. i feel like so much fantasy media calls back to the same exact Tolkien-esque tropes and it becomes hard to break out of that. which is why the Draenei are so unique and so much fun.

Some months back I noticed this display in Draenor and decided I would name each and every one of these. Since I’ve a spot to share, I thought I’d do so now here. Each row is designated as a letter top to bottom, and each column a number. I only went up to 8 as the right most display is identical to the left. Row D refers to the bags. A1. Ground Flame- Fireweed reduced to a powder, used to give heat and a smokey flavor. A2. Starflower petals (Ground)- Used as a stimulant in dishes. Most frequently used in preparing breakfest. A3. Salt (Sea)- You know what salt is, I hope. A4. Vraetin Petals- Petals of the vraetin flower, dried. A5. Moonlit Herbs- Though it provides a flavor not unlike oregano, it is usually used decoratively, garnishing dishes and giving them a soft glow. A6. Pharii- A mix of Chakbo Flour and lunarblossom, used to thicken and color. A7. Talador Orchid- Used more often as a garnish than a direct ingredient, though its stamen are often used in cooking. A8. Kela- A spice not unlike nutmeg or mace in flavor. B1. Rice- You know what rice is. B2. Skian’bo (ground)- A slightly sweet, pepper like spice. Ground up. B3. Dragon dust- Dust collected from faerie dragons. Though more typically used for its magical properties, some dishes make use of it. B4. Skian’bo (whole)- A slightly sweet, pepper like spice. Whole dried seeds. B5. Purple lentils- They are lentils, but purple. B6. Anchorite’s Weed- A spice, functionally similar to ajwain. B7. Chakbo Flour- The dried ends of Chakbo leaves turned into a powder. Used typically as a thickener for sauces and soups, but can be use do bread things. B8. Lunarblossom- Though more often used as gifts to show affection, lunar blossom is sometimes utilized in cooking, used more for color than its flavor which is comparable to roses. Seeds of this plant are dried to make Skian’bo. C1. Shimmerspores- Spores collected from shimmershrooms. C2. Or’vren- Talador Orchid Stamen. C3. Vraetin (Ground)- Seeds of the vraetin flower, a climbing plant. Most comparable to cumin. C4. Slumberbloom powder- A spice with sedative properties. Usually used in dinner to add flavor and help one to get to sleep, or make sure the kids are not up all night. C5. Saffron- Self-explanatory C6. Agrin Root- The root of the Agrin plant. Most comparable in taste and use to ginger. C7. Riot Dust- Ground riotvine. Typically used more for remedies than it is for its almost pungent flavor. C8. Violet Curry- A spice blend that ultimately holds a violet hue. Used to make curries or just to spice things. D1. Dried Arinor- Dried Arinor petals. A stimulant, often used in making drinks. D2. Draenor Pumpkin Seeds- The seeds of a large yellowish-white spiky gourd grown by the draenei, typically referred to as pumpkins. More often roasted than not. D3. Chakbo Leaves (Sliced)- Sliced up chakbo leaves. Used similarly to aloe or cactus in food. D4. Starflower Petals- Used as a stimulant in drinks. D5. Arrowbloom Petals- Petals of Arrowbloom. Has a taste most comparable to basil. D6. Draenor Pumpkin Spines- The spines of the draenor pumpkin. Typically soaked then boiled before eating. D7. Pink Lentils- They are lentils, but pink. D8. Flytrap Teeth- The teeth petals of the Gorgrond Flytrap. Tart in flavor.

“Friday” Fun Facts
Tumblr media
1. Belucera has four parent: two mothers (Delalia and Kalaya) and two fathers (K’ane and Kor’shar.) Kor’shar joined their family after she was born and is a Draenei. (They were initially concerned they might end up with a father younger than her and her sisters, but Kor’shar is thankfully significantly older than the rest of them.) Kalaya was the one who gave birth to Belucera.
2. While Belucera’s sisters have each had their fair share of spouses over the centuries, Belucera has only been married once and it was an accident undone fairly quickly. During her travels as a performer, she became enamored with a Pandaren singer named Lianfi. Their decision to get married may have been undertaken while under the influence. Lianfi does not talk to Belucera anymore and the acrobat does not blame her, considering how recklessly she both entered into and abandoned what was, to Lianfi, a serious emotional commitment.
3. Traveling around, Belucera makes a habit to seek out local cuisines wherever she goes. She has a keen nose and sense of taste, picking out flavors in a dish with ease. The elf can often talk her way into recipes, and those she cannot earn, she will try to figure out for herself. She considers herself a skillful cook, even outside of a kitchen, often cooking for whatever troupe or caravan she has hitched a ride with.

Owl Fest Day One Results
Tumblr media
In the wake of the Fourth War, some good, relaxed times were just what Remington needed. Getting out and about combated the paranoia. And thankfully, none were harassing save for some kaldorei in plate asking when Darkshore would be cleaned up.
“Dunno. Never was a soldier,” Remington said. If only he knew. If only he knew that she helped save this world before in the Argent Crusade. She bit her tongue.
But looks like Bull handled it well, despite him being drunk off his rocker and painted blue to pass off as a draenei in Brewfest. A hulking tauren would make most folks wanting to start trouble think twice.
She noticed Loira’s singed robes, but asking in public wasn’t the time nor place for it. In the back of her mind, she knew, and she could understand. But Remington didn’t necessarily agree.
Items Sold:
Crystal Skull - Diamond x2 (30g): Sculpted by a master Undead artisan Indiana ‘Indie’ Bones, crystal skulls are often treated as foci for spellcasting or as an idol during rituals of the Forgotten Shadow. 75% of proceeds go to Forsaken refugees trying to get by in Orgrimmar. Dream Linkin’ Rings x5 (125g): A set of two silver rings whose colors shift with emotion. Sleeping with the ring on will allow the owner to visit the opposite ring’s wearer in their dreams and vice-versa. Tirisfal Fungus Culture x1 (5g): A delicacy found in Forsaken cuisine, the Amanita sylvana species is a mushroom that only grows in the plagued parts of Lordaeron. Surprisingly, non-toxic to the living with an almost beefy flavor, much of Forsaken cuisine incorporates this species into cooking. The culture within this jar may be planted within any soil to grow Amanita sylvana. Scribe’s Skull x1 (10g): Often found in the possession of Forsaken archivists and scribes, This rune-inscribed skull can be placed in an area for up to three hours. At the end of that time, pressing the skull’s forehead will cause it to repeat every word said in its presence. Tapping the temple and fitting parchment into its jaws will make it transcribe what it hears real-time in a ghastly green ink All-Seeing Eye x1 (15g): Favored by Forsaken bankers and merchants to quickly judge the worth of treasure, this marble-colored eye can be placed on any pile to measure a specific aspect of the pile, such as weight, number of particles or objects within the pile, the approximate worth of a pile, and anything similar. A number will float above the pile in red. 75% of proceeds go to Forsaken refugees trying to get by in Orgrimmar.
Total: 185g
Remington never would have predicted being handcuffed to Brassy for ten minutes as part of the ‘Clamps’ prank.
Have you ever heard of the tragedy of Darth Plagueis the Wise the Archivist? I thought not. Goblin religion was... odd, though Remington listened as much as she could. A ten percent tax to all income every Winter’s Veil was brutal.
With Leucothia’s first sale, Remington couldn’t help but feel just a bit proud. After all, after spending an exhorbitant amount of gold on that arcwine bottle, she’d need to start making it back somehow.
And finally, a pleasant surprise walked its way to Remington in the form of Zeke, the jewelcrafting human that had been interested in one of the crystal skulls to study its cutting. He returned the jinyu jewelry set in addition. The gunslinger stored the cursed array in a lead box for safekeeping. It was Riley’s after all. And after that night, the death knight would find it mailed back to her with a small note.
Riley, This is a cursed object. Apparently, it’s got some kinda siren song ta it fer sailors and the like? Can ya look inta it? -Rem

Interview with Genn
Q: If Anduin was able to bring back the dead, would you ask him with extreme politeness if he could bring back great warriors of Gilneas? Yes that includes Liam
Genn: The dead should stay dead and rest. And that includes Liam.
Q: How do you feel about Tess being part of the Uncrowned?
Genn: Tess is part of what now? Tess: (Wildly gesturing “He has no idea, shut up!” behind Genn’s back)
Q: What do you think about the heroes?
Genn: Powerful. Useful. Sometimes toying with things that shouldn’t be toyed with. Sort of... unreliable.
Q: How do you feel about Death Knight Worgen?
Genn: I mean, being Worgen is bad enough, they didn’t choose to be dead murderous machines either. I guess... I have an understanding. But no sympathy.
Q: How much do you hate Nathanos Blightcaller?
Genn: On a scale from 1 to 10 there isn’t any number that would be big enough.
Q: Does Anduin reminds you of Liam? If so, its painful to watch him and remember your son?
Genn: No. Liam was a warrior. A leader. Anduin is a whinny ninny who likes books too much for his own good.
Q: Do you think, at some point that Tess will become queen, and if yes, what queen do you think she will be?
Genn: She is the daughter of a king, of course she will become a queen. Genn: It is going to be problematic with her. She wants to be her, as she says it, her own woman. She doesn’t understand she isn’t meant to be in the front line doing things. Women should stay home and safe while we protect them! Genn: I am... I am not saying that she wouldn’t be able to go and kick asses. I just. Don’t like that idea. She is a lady, for Light’s sake. She should be the caring one.
Q: Do you love your daughter? Because sometimes it feels like you don’t.
Genn: Of course I love my daughter! What kind of father doesn’t love his daughter? I’d do anything for Tess!
Q: I always wondered if the transformation into Worgen was hurting?
Genn: It isn’t painful. It is more like... sneezing with all your body at once.
Q: Why with such attachment in Anduin verse?
Genn: He has lost his father. I am the only competent father around. And he needs a strong man as a model and a teacher. Just look at him! On his own he would either start wearing skirts or even worse, entered a monastery, which also includes wearing skirts. And he is being a friend with that blasted black dragon! Black dragons are evil!
Q: Do you ever feel insecure about Gilneas being destroyed and having to go to Stormwind and follow a new, young, and inexperienced king and not being able to rise like you used to?
Genn: Actually, since I’ve got my ass out of Darnassus, things are getting better. Genn: Anduin has always been opened to take advice from someone more experienced. Unlike Tyrande. Genn: Who might be more experienced. But also, she is a gentle woman and a priestess, nothing made for this cruel wartime.
Q: Do you still keep in touch with Crowley?
Genn: Oh. Yeah. Not really. We have... differing opinions. Genn: However, Tess is very befriended with the whole family, which is good for all kinds of diplomacy.
Q: Do you ever get flashbacks of the Battle for Gilneas?
Genn: Yeah. It’s called nightmares.
Q: What was your opinion on Varian?
Genn: Good king. Good warrior. Good friend. More liberal then I am, but then, it has been brought to my attention that against all new things I tend to build a wall. Sometimes literal. Genn: I know I don’t have to be always right about things, and that times change. But I am too old for changing. Varian was younger than I and has been taught different values.
Q: How did the worgen react to him being the Chosen of Goldrinn?
Genn: Actually, we didn’t give a fuck. Like, not our problem, really.
Q: How would you react if Anduin actually fell in love with Tess?
Genn: That would be wonderful. Mia and I have actually been thinking about bringing the two of them together. I have discussed it with Varian, too, but he always insisted that it is Anduin’s problem, not his. Genn: So overall, I would be very pleased. Love isn’t required in a marriage, but it certainly helps things.
Q: What do you think about Katherine Proudmoore?
Genn: I didn’t really bother making an opinion. Knowing the Proudmoores’ luck, she is gonna get struck by a meteor or something before this whole war is over.
Q: What is your opinion on the night elves?
Genn: They whole society is upside down of what I have been taught and what I know! Women warriors? Friendly nature? Have they heard of proper walls and doors? Why are they so damn tall?
Q: Did Gilneans like Darnassus (before Sylvanas burned it down)?
Genn: Ummm... you know, there was this gigantic wall thing and Kalimdor being not a really discovered continent until recently. Genn: Although I admit, the Draenei were way more surprising.
Q: How do you feel about new allied races that recently joined the Alliance?
Genn: Evil, insane, creepy, and all of above. Silver coin for you if you can guess which is which.
Q: Does your mind sometimes shift between forms, even if your body doesn't?
Genn: No, not really. I don’t think my mind shifts at all... It is more like... In Worgen form, I can get away with way more things I wouldn’t as a human. Such as, say, tearing out the jugular vein with my bare teeth out of a Troll’s neck.
Q: What's your opinion on Jaina Proudmoore?
Genn: Batshit crazy. But it was a long time coming. Genn: There was this whole Arthas thing, then she lost her father, then there was Arthas again, the Theramore got destroyed... Jaine deserves support and a bit of pity. Not condemnation. Pushing her away because she is insane and sangerous is going to make things worse. Genn: She needs help. But I don’t know how to help her.
Q: Since being able to shift at will between human and worgen, which form you like the most?
Genn: I am still favouring my human form, because it is more, well, human. Although, the Worgen one is... more practical in many ways. Except small spaces, I can’t fit anywhere like that.
Q: Also, any special carw for that glorious mane/fur of yours in the BfA trailer?
Genn: Fleas-Flee shampoo. I don’t want to hear any comments.
Q: Genn Greymane is a fitting name, innit? Did anyone ever... point that out?
Genn: Well, the only person who did was Taedal. I consider it some kind of a demon insult. Because he laughed.
Q: Favourite food?
Genn: Roasted quails. With a touch of roasted almonds, maybe?
Q: Did your preferences in cuisine change after you wee affected by the curse?
Genn: Well... I used to like my meat medium rare, but now I am more into well done. And I dirnk far more water than I used to.
Q: In how much trouble would one be, if one were to call you daddy? Asking for a friend. *cough* daddy *cough*
Genn: Unless it was my children, I’d hand them over to the guards.
Q: How's the wife? Haven't seen her out in public lately, and with you out and away so much,  I sure hope she is alright.
Genn: Mia is good. Mia is good. War front isn’t any place for gentle women. She is staying back in Darnassus. Genn: Which caught fire... Genn: On that matter, she’s got a new haircut, because her hair got kind of... scorched. Genn: But otherwise she is doing good. I feel bad for neglecting her. But you know. There is a war going on.

I'd love for Blizzard to hire a small writing team solely to establish specific cultural aspects of their races. I know just wandering the world we get plenty hints and pieces but... honestly, there just isn't that much in the game. I'd love to see a bookshelf in the Embassies that tells you about each races' cultural norms in many ways: their music, arts, the way they generalize the other races, their fashion choices, culinary and so on and so on. Maybe I'm just not looking deep enough...
I think there’s some of that in-game, but it’s definitely not easy to find. I’ve found stuff like this in the most obscure of places: city guard gossip text, the things that vendors sell, the official cookbooks, etc., but you don’t often see it in quest text, which is where everyone gets most of the lore. A lot of the more detailed cultural elements are actually in the RPG, but unfortunately, it’s non-canon. I was doing a cursory browse through the Horde Player’s Guide and there’s a substantial amount of information in there about religious beliefs, funerary rites, celebrations, and so forth. None of it is canon until put in the game, but that doesn’t mean you can’t use it for your roleplay (although I do understand the desire to have something concrete).
There’s a mechanical issue in having a writing team for it, unfortunately. It would take a lot of time for a dev (or team of devs) to properly flesh out each race’s cultural norms, especially since there’s so much pre-established lore to go through to prevent discrepancies. Having a team of people do this when they could otherwise be doing things like bug fixing or creating new content, especially in a game played by more PvEers than RPers, would just be considered a waste of resources.
I’m not familiar with the process behind the Chronicle volumes, but those were meant to be the most recent, up-to-date version of lore, and they still had some errors. This game has an enormous amount of lore in it and although it sometimes feels like there’s huge voids (the draenei’s 25,000 year expedition through space? the night elf’s 10,000 year long vigil?), there’s still a lot to cover. The Chronicle books covered as much as they could, added just about as much, and still never touched on these smaller details.
You’ll get a lot about High/Blood elf music in in-game sound files (because most significant songs are sung in Thalassian), fashion via their unique armor items, and then nothing about their art. I wouldn’t ever ask this of anyone, but I’m sure if you did some painful sifting through all of the food and drink items vendors sell, you could probably get a good idea of each race’s cuisine... except there are some races, like the gnomes, which don’t appear to have any food items specific to them in-game. It’s very touch and go with different races and some are far more fleshed out than others.
I, however, love details. I’m hoping with what I do in my Lore Months that I can maybe shed some light on this for you! I admit, I get excited when someone says, “This race has no lore!!” because I’m eager to prove them wrong. I want to prove to everyone that while Blizzard may not have given us everything we want, they gave us enough. I will sift through those vendors and I will tell you what each race’s cuisine is. You want to know something specific? Tell me and I’ll look for it so you don’t have to.

Foreign Cuisine
The notebook lay open upon the Kaldorei’s desk. The page open to a half finished article for the paper.
Foreign cuisine is something that anyone who travels extensively for work or pleasure will tell you can be a hit or a miss depending upon your personal preferences. But one that can open your eyes and become a highlight of the travel experience.
As the editor of The Royal Courier, I have traveled more in the last two years than in all of my 405 years of life. I have eaten everywhere in that time, too. From the snowy mountains of Dun Morogh to the sunny beaches of Pandaria, the food is just as diverse as the people who inhabit those lands.
I have tried some of the weirdest and strangest yet delicious dishes one could imagine. From a worm served with vegetables after being baked to perfection to a broth that was surprisingly filling for just being liquid. The foods we eat show our culture, our history, and our tastes. Spicy to sweet; plain to too hot to handle; savory to citrusy; our palates shed insight into who we are as individuals and groups.
The cultural significance of dishes such as the Draenei’s Grilled Saberfish to Dwarven Blood Sausages to Human Turtle Bisque can not be underestimated as significant. The development of these dishes have their own stories and add to the cultural phenomenon that makes some dishes more favored than others.  Each race upon Azeroth has a unique way of preparing ingredients that are similar and each comes out tasting different and special.
The writing ends there with a note to add a dish unique to each race. Scratch outs and corrections shed some insight into the Kaldorei’s writing practices.

I have this little thought go through my head that trolls are products of their environment. Jungle/forest trolls can grow moss or use moss as part of their skin care/como and frost trolls have fur patches or fur as their skin and sand trolls use mud/sand mixtures upon their skin to block the sun and heat from them.
I love this!
What I try to bring with headcanons and ideas is not what SHOULD be, but what COULD be - and to let you all be inspired and think about aspects of your favorite races you probably didn’t think about before, or see it in a new light. A headcanon should be a platform for a player to further expand creatively with their character(s) and make it their own however they want. I hope my thoughts and headcanons help turn something unexceptional into something extraordinary. Ever thought of the daily life of a tauren kodo herder? How has orc simple “meat-on-fire” cuisine evolved since their exposure to the different cultures of the Horde? What would a draenei toilet look like?
If I can’t help you fall in love with Azeroth all over again by sparking the ‘what if’ side of your imagination then I am not doing my job.

Cooking headcanons
A L L I A N C E
- Eruina (nelf huntress): like most hunters, supplies all her food by herself. Years in the wilderness taught her how to survive minimalistically, yet use all of what she hunted and gathered. It’s very unlikely to catch her dining at a capital – when she wants food, she goes back to her lone camp in the wilds to eat what she had found. She knows how to savour her food with herbs found from the wilderness, and she never lets anything go to waste. A great cook, taught by nature itself.
- Naieelie (nelf druid): doesn’t give a damn. Since Naieelie likes being in her animal forms more, she also hunts as a bear or a cat. Picks berries and fruit from nature. It’s unknown if she actually knows how to cook. Maybe she just doesn’t care enough, as she eats everything raw, unless offered prepared food by someone. She doesn’t eat Leverette’s mana pies though.
- Eydis (human hunter, 18 by the time of BfA): she’s young, so she still has a lot to learn. She knows basic recipes though, and she also knows how to survive in the wild, since her mentor was Eruina. She enjoys spices a lot.
- Lufeni (nelf DH): she is 10000 years old, so we can assume that she has learned at least the most basic cooking to survive through hard times. However, the need for that has diminished heavily ever since she became a demon hunter.
- Valkÿ (draenei paladin): undoubtedly the best cook from my Alliance squad. She has been trained in exotic cooking techniques and use of spice in Pandaria. She has great knowledge of Outlandish/Draenor cuisine, and she can make at least one meal from every part of the world (or even beyond)! If you want a gourmet meal, you should probably ask her.
 H O R D E
- Amaara (undead warlock): in life, she was capable of cooking. Now, however? Is that... someone’s tongue? Why is it green? What did you feed me?
- An’ti-tormen’to (troll shaman): wonderful cook. Her knowledge was passed on to her by mother, the knowledge from generation to generation. She has to make food for her husband and her four children. And they all enjoy her cooking greatly.
- Fereonal (goblin hunter): just the barebones meals needed to survive, of course provided by herself. She doesn’t ever cook crabs though. Her pet is a crawler, after all.
- Lithyllis (belf mage): has never heard of the term „cooking“. Probably something the poor people do. Everything is always brought to her on a silver platter and if she does manage to go hungry, she gets herself her mana pies or better yet, ask her death knight bodyguard to find her some real food.
- Wendeysel (pandaren monk): from my Horde squad, the best cook. Even though her knowledge was initially confined to the Wandering Isle, the mastery of the Pandaren Ways was not lost there. As soon as she got out from the Isle, she started building on what she already knew. She is eager to learn, and may become a master chef in time. Even now, her use of spice and technique is amazing. Wen and Valkÿ should do a cooking contest sometime.

Eiridiel returns to the Shatari Bazaar. Given their popularity last time, Eiridiel will be stocking more when it comes to skewers.
The menu will include:

He made sure to grab a table an hour in advance; the Crescent was a nightmare to get into for lunch if you weren't lucky or 'somebody.'
The dwarf wasn't either really, which meant it took some serious effort on his part to keep up with everyone else. It was something he was used to, with mixed-blood heritage and his choice in profession earning him the ire of just about everyone he had known growing up. If it wasn't for the Ambassador-
“Emberslag!”
Kartast literally went up an inch from his stool, jumping up and attempting to twist around to see who called him.
“Oi! Pratchett! Bloody hell, get in 'ere! Yer just in time!”
The dwarf motioned over to the young human at the doorway of the tavern before quickly taking to his feet, waving his arms to make sure he didn't get lost.
“I'm actually on my way to-” “It dunna matter, boy! Git'cher ass in 'ere! I gotta table 'an a appointment with you-know-who!”
The young man spoke to someone outside and ahead of him on the street, all smiles and waves as they parted ways as quickly as they could in the bustle of Dalaran's afternoon streets. Will didn't waste any time slipping into the tavern, avoiding conflict with the hired muscle at the door by first pointing with his finger at himself and then to the Dark Iron dwarf at the table with his arms flailing about. The round-about waving gesture the young man makes with his index finger and hand conveys more intent than his words could have so quickly, indicating his intention to slip inside and get to where he's going with little hassle. His insistence and haste are the only things that get him inside without an explicit vetting process; the dwarf inviting him in helps matters, but only just.
“Rhonin's magnificent fiery mane, what in the fel are you doing in here, Kart? And which you-know-who are we talking about? There's a couple.” Will asked the important questions as he stole a stool from a nearby counter and slid up to the not-quite-made-for-three-people table with the dwarf.
“The Ambassador, boyo! Who else, ah?” Kartast is all grins and pride as he made the exclamation, getting comfortable on his stool again. The reaction from his human companion was priceless as always when it came to Her. Kartast thoroughly enjoyed catching Pratchett off guard whenever he could, a feat which was becoming harder and harder as the young man went through hell on a seemingly daily basis. “Hope ya got a spare hour in yer day, 'cause she's s'posed to be in any minute!”
“Good thing I wasn't in a hurry. I suppose my sister can manage until dinner without me.”
“Oi, Gracie?! Why didn't ya invite'er in? I'd love ta see the-”
“You'd love to hit on her until she picked you up and carried you to the nearest water trough, Kart. You know she could crush you.”
“Aye, boyo, aye. S'what makes her so attractive.”
“Aaand we're changing subjects. I imagine you're in here for lunch with the Ambassador then?”
“Aye, I am! Hilde'gath's got some work she needs done; and where Flaresoul needs us, the Emberslag's'll go!”
“Mm. Well, I'll stick around for a little bit. Have a bite as a courtesy. Only a bite though; I'll die if I eat heavy for the rest of the day.”
“Oh yeah! Donny mentioned ya tried ta kill yerself this mornin'. Keen on that orcish cuisine eh?”
“The draenei daughters and their mother have had me on a strict diet for the last week or so here, Kart. I needed it. Like you need eye-candy.”
“Ah ya poor bastard! Surrounded by buxom, beautiful blue gals 'an their tender mercies! A torture if I ever heard'a one!” The dwarf guffawed as he raised a hand to flag down service, giving a few curious looks around as he let his attention wander.
He couldn't help himself, it was all too enjoyable for him. The barmaids all dressed up for show, the patrons in their flashy outfits and revealing clothing; even the glimpses outside of the melting pot of races on the street. If there was anything he was guilty of, it was being a true race traitor. Which among the Dark Irons was starting to become more and more acceptable. One of the few reasons he was able to get away with it so openly.
The fact Pratchett wasn't joining him in the sights was cause for concern. The dwarf only realized it after the long silence that came with looking about the tavern, giving his friend a long considerate look before nodding at him as he spoke up. “What's botherin' ya? Ya got that far-away look on 'yer face.”
Will shrugged helplessly, placing his palms on the tops of his thighs as he leaned forward a bit and rested some of his weight on them. “Ah, I don't know. It's been a morning, you know? Just dealing with things.”
“Yeah, things huh? Like what things?”
“Just... things. Life. Trying to get through it, you know?” “Aye, yeah. Don't think I don't know that answer for what it is, boyo. Ya seen'er yet?”
“Who?” “Sarah! She's in Dal, after doin' whatever the feck she was up to in Suramar with Gaile 'an Yesi.” The way Pratchett sunk and lowered his head, Kartast knew he'd made a misstep. “Ya ain't on good terms with'er still, huh?”
“You know what? Let's change the subject. Again. I've already gone through it a couple times today, with Gracelyn insisting I sit down and talk to her.”
“She ain't wrong.” “You're not helping, Kart.” “She still ain't wrong.” “You're still not helping, Kart.”

Eiridiel’s Cookbook, Part I: Talbuk Skewers
Before we begin, there is a core principle held in draenic cuisine as I learned it that will be reflected in this. That principle is as follows;  Everything is to taste. While distinct recipes exist out there, you will find that many cite to do as you feel with the dishes. Terms such as pinch, dash, or to taste for spices are everywhere. Actual units, for such a deeply religious and technologically advanced people, are curiously scarce in cooking. I’ve come to the conclusion this may have had something to do with the thousands of years they had been fleeing from the Legion, and events where they have had to start over in various fronts on their culture. Since i’ve never asked, do take that with a pinch of salt.  Now! Lets begin with one of the most basic and beloved, the skewer.
To begin, make sure you have wooden skewers, a cut of talbuk, and your spices. You can use any meat for this task, but talbuk is traditional.
Start by heating your cooking surface. Usually this will be some kind of oven but these can be done over a fire if you are patient, or even on a grill or in a pan if you must. If it is the latter, we can leave this step for later.
Next you want to cut your talbuk into bite sized chunks. I find little more than half a thumb’s length roughly to be the right size for me, but do what you feel is right.
Now you want to spice them. You can toss them or just put a light dusting on. Usually, this is where I get out the salt, skian’bo, and just a little bit of grounded flame, violet curry, or both.  Once those are spiced to your taste, it is time to put them on your skewers.
By this point your oven, or your surface of choice, should be hot enough. If you are using a pan, heathen, now is the time to get that going. When that is hot enough, transfer your filled skewers to it.
Remember to watch your skewers and remember to turn them every couple of minutes. I find about four minutes is sufficient on a grill, or ten in a draenic oven, works nicely. That said, this will change based on how hot you have things and your own tastes.
Once they are done, remove them and give them a minute to cool. Then, well,  don’t think  need to tell you what to do wth food.

Eiridiel’s Cookbook, Part 2: Polemko Pie
To begin, first we need a polemko. Also known as draenor pumpkin, these used to be grown substantially on draenor. I do warn you that they are not as bountiful as they once been, mostly being grow on the Botanica as part of conservation and restoration efforts, there are always private growers. How you get yours is up to you.
Take your polemko and cut it open, removing as much of the seeds and guts as you can. Personally, I like to save the seeds for later but that can be a little annoying. Afterwards, if you don’t have it running already, start up your cooking wok or pot and fill it part way with water. How much depends on just how big yours is, and how much polemko you intend to cook.  The whole thing will need a sizable one, I fill my largest half way and it does it, but there are always ways to store it when you are done if you don’t want to make a dozen pies.  Cut your polemko into chunks, you can leave the spines if you want or remove them at your discretion, just make sure you don’t boil the stem too. It should take you half an hour or so. Add a bit more time if you kept your spines. At that point, remove the chunks and remove the peel. Again, you may keep the spines for this if you like for a slightly different flavor and texture. Then you want to, in a large bowl, mash up the cooked chunks of polemko. This will the the base for the pie.
Next comes your crust. I mix a half and half mixture of Azerothian flour with Chakbo, though you can rely on either exclusively if you wish, with a little salt. If you use just Chakbo, the crust has a habit of being crumbly so you might want to line the pan with polemko seeds before adding your dough. That should give it some structure in getting from pan to plate. Cut fat into the mix and add just a little water. Mix it all together until it you can get it to stick together into a ball. If it doesn’t feel right, feel free to add more or any of the ingredients, you’ll know when its right. Regardless, roll it out to your desired thickness and set into a pie pan.
In another bowl, mix the mashed polemko with eggs, salt, milk, kela, agrin, and sugar. The darker and richer the sugar the better. Feel free to experiment with your spicing. I like to add a little bit of shimmerspore or dragon dust when I can get a hold of either, but these are not vital for the pie. Now, naturally, the more polemko you used the more of the above you’ll need, especially crusts beyond a point. Do not worry If you have extra and an empty tin, you can just make polemko custard.  Now, pour the polemko into your crust or crusts. Now, all thats left is to bake it. Set it level in your oven, and let it cook. Start keeping an eye on it after half an hour. Once you can draw a blade from it clean, the pie can come out and cool.
Now, the last step.  You can cut it into as many pieces as you like. In my family, we wind up doing eighths. Not because there are four of us, there are not.. yet, but because my daughter isn’t getting a whole sixth of the pie.  You can do eighths, sixths, fourths... You can take a spoon to the whole pie for all I care, just let it cool first.

Eiridiel’s Cookbook going forward
While it was never my intention to be the focus of this blog, but rather an ask blog, I am enjoying
doing this. As I get full ideas together I’ll do them, but.. I’d like to try an experiment. This should help me move along. I have many ideas, but I don’t know what to do next, so here is where you come in. I will post a list of dishes below. You may, via the ask link, request one of those dishes or something else if you have something in mind draenei food related, as broad or specific as you like. Standard asks will be addressed normall, but food asks I will take them one at a time and do up the recipe.
My current ideas:
Bluefish Curry
Draenic Meatballs
Draenor Dumpling Soup
Honey-Roasted Polemko Seeds
Lentil Dahl
Web and Turf
