I'm really, really obsessed with Roxanne, despite us knowing nearly nothing about her. Her life is just this perfect, horrible tragedy, and since we know so little about who she really was, it's interesting trying to decipher how she went from a teenaged political marriage to surviving and being successor-in-the-name-of-her-son. Like, how she got on with Olympia's, what she thought of Alexander. I really wish we had more information about her, she's just so intriguing. Jane Rochford of the Hellenistic age for sure!
I wish we know more as well! If you have not looked at Beth Carney's Women and Monarchy in Macedonia, Beth addresses Roxane a bit there. But trying to pick out the Plutrachian Romance plus anti-Asian attitudes in our historians in order to figure out much about her as an historical figure is virtually impossible. :-(
There have been a couple historical novels featuring her, one called Roxana by Helene Moreau published originally in 3 parts in the '60s, then reissued as one long novel by Playboy in the early '70s (that should tell you something). It's not very good, but it's there, and she's not presented as a bad person. In Stephanie Thornton's The Conqueror's Wife, she's a bitch, one of three main female voices. The other two are Drypetis (yeah, H.'s wife) and Thessalonike, ATG's sister. It's a...strange book. Not as classically a Romance like Roxana, but I had issues with several of the choices she made, and her research into Zoroastrianism was kinda hit-and-miss. In neither novel is Alexander well presented, btw. Hephaistion is nicer, and in the second, he's the Hero of the Romance. (snort)
There have been a few others, but all seem to be self-published and my experience with self-published ATG novels is not good, on either the history or the writing quality fronts.
Tumblr media
If you're a writer, maybe you should take her on? Tell her story. As I said, it's hard to detach her from the romantic threads, but Beth has made a lot of headway researching women. And there's been more work of late on the Achaemenid court, etc. Maria Brosius is a good start (Women in Achaemenid Persia; History of Achaemenid Persia). Marek Jan Olbrycht is a bit too into the old "fushion" theories, but he also has a fair bit about the Iranian parts of Alexander's court in article form (his book on ATG is now kinda old, and in Polish). Not sure about work on Sogdiana itself, but plumb the bibliographies of Brosius and Olbrycht. I fear much of it would be in Russian, but there may be some in French or English.
Depending, you may be able to find a publisher. Women's fiction is intrested in historical retakes like that. It's part of how Thornton got hers sold (she routinely writes romantic historical fiction from a female perspective). You might also look at Elisabeth Storr's series on Rome/Etruria for an idea of how to approach it. She tells a story of a Roman bride sent to Veii as part of a peace negotiation. She winds up preferring Veii (and loving her new husband), but it takes a while. And it's well-done (imo), although I preferred the first novel.

NORTH&SOUTH
My Muse was stressed and needed a brake. She came back quickly, and, GUESS WHAT? A new idea... As if I haven’t got 3 fics to continue and one research to do...
For now, a picset, inspired by “North&South” by Elisabeth Gaskell with Sansa as Margaret Hale and Jaime as John Thornton. Sorry, Richard Armitage fans, I love this actor and man, but idea was too good ;) It is also loosely on one idea from Margit Sandemo’s “Isfolket” serie with similar themes (workers and all).
Industrial age Westeros. People - including children - are working too long and too hard, first strikes take place. Spring is late, as always in the North, and not so happy in the South. Cholera epidemic took many lives in whole Westeros.
Jaime Lannister, nouveau riche, is looking for new opportunities in the North. He lost his beloved mother, left his mourning father and brother Tyrion in the South but took his twin sister Cersei with him. Jaime meets industrial workers: Robb Stark, a son of a late preacher, rebellious Jon Snow and resonable Davos Seaworth. He meets also Robb’s younger sister Sansa, beautiful, smart and, as for period standards, well educated young woman. Cersei - a better version of character - is protective and affraids, that Sansa is a kind of husband-huntress, but doesn’t do anything malicious, just watches the girl closely. When Jaime realizes, that Starks, after their parents died, fail to support their three younger siblings, inspired by Davos, makes Sansa an offer.
Would you like to know which one? A job, or a marriage?
Should I start another fic?

Thank you to everyone who participated!  It’ll be interesting to see if our opinions change after season 7.
Your Comments: (under the cut)
I Hope the next Season Will be even much better than the last one. And I really want the show to continue as long as possible.
would like to see Frank back and Faith and Carson together.
I have to be honest - I watched the show originally mainly for the on screen chemistry and love story of the Thorntons. I enjoyed the first season the most - as a side note - Lori (aka) Abigail hogged way too much of the screen time as seasons progressed - WAY too much - very annoying. Need to bring back Frank or introduce a new pastor for the show and Carson / Faith have O chemistry ( might as well be siblings) !! I think they should have developed Carson and Elizabeth possibly - I could have maybe grown to route for them. Thanks for this platform!!
I love that you do this after each season. So fun! Wish I could have picked two characters to come back. I do wish Frank would come back. I think that he is important to the town and he would be great help with Jack (like this more than Bill being there) I don’t want an Elizabeth love triangle. Faith and Carson have lost their spark to me. They drag things out too long and I lose interest. Fiona and Julie would be fun to watch. I do want to learn more about Lucas’ past.
Thank goodness Abigail and Jack are gone, but the show's been going down in quality... :(
Thank you for putting these surveys together. It's always fun to see what kinds of results you end up with after polling people who visit Tumblr. These were great questions! Some were genuinely hard to answer (for different reasons, which makes me a bit nervous about S7), but I think something we should consider when we think about S7 is that the writers/cast/et cetera usually don't put everything out on the table before the episodes start airing. Here's to hoping we get some surprise plots along the way that spark an interest from fans who aren't particularly looking forward to any of the teased plotlines coming up. Cheers!
I hope Frank does come back, although I'm not at all religious, the program was all about the community's faith and it would be nice to see that return. But not too heavily
Not a fan of Jesse's undying distrust of Lucas. Hopefully that's over.
I love the "side-stories" more than the main plots 😂 Lee and Rosemary are basically everything I need. But I'm hoping to see more of Nathan, he seemed like a different character in When Hope Calls. Funny and witty and there's none of that in WCTH, probably because they are too busy having him in love with Elisabeth. 🤔
The show should focus on the characters they have already - stop bringing in new folks and then discarding them quickly!
love your blog and all the hard work you do! i just returned to tumblr after a break and i'll support ya <3
Just hope the show keeps going!
To be quite honest i believe that they should in the end keep Elizabeth single or something, its not because i cant see her without Jack its just that the two love interests arent the best. I dont like Nathan because he is a bit uptight and boring the only thing he has going for him is Allie (who is my favourite character!) and there is just something off with Lucas, otherwise i would chose him..... ultimately she could go with someone else....
Thanks for all that you do here an on your other site! I'm more of a lurker, but I want you to know I appreciate you!
You're doing an incredible job with your site and I'm so sorry any one of us has made you feel anything less than immensely appreciative of all your efforts. God bless you. You are a big reason I love the show so much is because of your insight and observations. So keep up the great work:) xoxoxo

The Bryan Awards - The Best of the Last Decade (The 2010s)
With only two weeks left in the decade, I took a thorough look back at the last ten Bryan Awards (with the last nine of them being recorded as annual podcasts for WCRS FM), and picked the Best of the Best since the 2010 Bryan Awards (or programs that aired since January 1, 2010, and airing up until the cut-off for this September’s Bryan Awards, which was May 31, which would eliminate the likes of Mrs. Fletcher, Season 2 of Big Little Lies, plus newbies like On Becoming A God in Central Florida, Perfect Harmony, the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup, and this week’s A Christmas Carol).
Here are the Guidelines Chosen for both this and the Silver Garbage Awards Worst of the Decade: - Eligibility Period is January 1, 2010 to May 31, 2019. - Glee is being entered for New Series of the Decade, because it won the 2010 Bryan Award in that race, despite it debuted in 2009. - Younger Acting will be merged through the genres: Daytime, Comedy, Drama, and Limited Series.  And if an actor turned 26 doesn't really matter, as long as 50% of their nominations were before they were 26. - Big Little Lies (Season 1), Orange Is the New Black, and Downton Abbey are Dramas.  Shameless is a Comedy.  True Detective is a Longform, as is American Horror Story, and ALL seasons will be lumped into one for Anthology Stories. - Sherlock and Sharknado are being entered for ALL of their movies, ditto for Black Mirror episodes, in the Longform races. - There will be separate Lead and Supporting Acting races for Comedy and Drama Bryan Awards, but NOT for Silver Garbage. Apologies for the Length of this Post, but without further ado...
COMEDY SERIES of the DECADE: Barry (HBO) The Big Bang Theory (CBS) black-ish (ABC) Girls (HBO) Glee (Fox) The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (Amazon Prime) Modern Family (ABC) Parks and Recreation (NBC) Transparent (Amazon Prime) Veep (HBO)

Simpson: American Crime Story (F/X) Temple Grandin (HBO)
