My brain wants me to cry so now you guys will too

Halt, walking into Crowleys tent during the gathering: "Oh, are you looking through reports right now?"

Crowley: "Yeah, I'm actually on a report from Gilan at the moment!"

Crowley: (starts describing the report, pretend it's something super impressive idk)

Halt: "Wait, really?"

Halt: (grabs the report)

Halt: "Oh, he's done so much, hasn't he?"

(Halt continues reading over the report, Crowley kinda just watches him while smiling?)

Halt: "I always knew he'd go far"

I think my brain wants me to cry, let me just walk you through the little scenario I just thought up against my will

During a gathering, Will's shooting at some dummies and absolutely killing it. Then, one of the other rangers gives him a challenge. They took one of the dummies and set it up a good while away, and told him to keep shooting at the other ones, but when he yells "switch," Will goes and shoots at the dummy before quickly switching back to the other ones. Will gladly accepts, of course, he loves challenges like that

So, he continues shooting at the dummies. Eventually, the other ranger yells to switch, and he does. He hits the dummy straight in the neck and immediately goes back to shooting like he was before with just as good accuracy. And he's like a 3rd year or something at this point, so a bunch of rangers that were nearby started congratulating him, highlighting how impressive that was for his age.

Unsure how to handle the praise, he looked to Halt, leaning on a stump nearby. Crowley's standing next to him, giving short bits of praise, yelling a little so that Will can hear. Halt meets Wills eyes, his face as neutral as ever. All he gives is a slight nod upwards, but Will knows exactly what he means. His face lights up, and he turns back to the rest of the rangers, gladly accepting praise and even teasing one or two.

As soon as he turns, though, Halts' face softens. Every part of his body language softens, actually. Crowley turns and comments on how Will immediately looked to him on what to do, how he started beaming at the slightest hint of approval from him, how adorable it all was. Halt just nods slightly and gives a small grunt of agreement. Crowley stays there for a second, looking into Halts eyes as he stares at his kid, having fun and challenging the other rangers to a competition of sorts. And then, softly, Halt speaks

"I'm so proud of him"

And that's all he says before walking away to continue some work he had left behind to watch Will.

That's all he needed to say.

I absolutely love Halt just not being able to handle Wills whole "not being around" at like any point in their relationship, but I found two extensions to that based on one problem:

Halt still loves Gilan, actually, Will isn't just a blatant favorite (at least he shouldn't be)

My two remedies are as follows,

1. Halt was actually the exact same way for the first couple of years or so after Gilan graduated as he was in Burning Bridge, that's why he went and did things like steal horses from the Temujai

2. He was so deeply affected by Wills' absence in particular because he actually bonded with Will during that short time when he was a baby that he took care of Will before he went to the ward. This also implies that he acted out just as much in between giving up Will and getting Gilan

Either way, the idea that such extreme behavior as soon as he loses a child not being new in the slightest is pure gold to me

I want more content of Halt and Will having disagreements like any teenager with their parent would and I especially want content of Gilan surprise visting them on a day that happens to be particularly bad

Headcanon that Halts a lover

That, despite all he does to appear gruff and angry, he loves deeply. He loves everything he comes into contact with, and he loves with his whole heart.

He loves the way the rising sun highlights the mist in the air, he loves the babble of the creek behind his house, he loves the smell of fresh baked cookies, he loves his friends, he loves his apprentices. He loves them and everything as if he'll never love again, but you'd never catch him saying that directly

Ok but hear me out

Will getting hurt on a mission, not bad enough to need immediate or even complicated medical attention, but bad enough that he can't fight

So, Halt finishes off who/whatever they were fighting pretty quickly and pretty much runs over to help him

And as he's cleaning and bandaging Wills wounds for him (they were at such an angle that Will couldn't properly do it himself) Halt kept muttering "Mo buachaill leanbh" to himself

(because he refuses to consciously admit that he views Will as a son, but he still really cares for him and defaults to speaking in Hibernian to hide that fact)
