So Harold Meij has today resigned as President/CEO of NJPW after a little over 2 years in charge. He’ll be finishing up on October 23rd when Takami Ohbari, who is current serving as the CEO of NJPW of America, will be taking over. Very interesting indeed.

G1 Climax 30 Night 6 - 9/29/2020; Harold Meij Out As NJPW President, Takami Ohbari In As Of 10/23/2020
Tumblr media
The tournament resumed today, the first of two nights at Tokyo Korakuen Hall, and the first of three in a row through this week. B Block matches were on offer today, and you can see it now on NJPWWorld.
- 9/29/2020, Tokyo Korakuen Hall
Yuya Uemura d. Gabriel Kidd (Boston Crab, 9:10)
G1 Climax 30 B Block: YOSHI-HASHI [CHAOS] d. SANADA [Los Ingobernables] (Karma, 15:15)
G1 Climax 30 B Block: KENTA [Bullet Club] d. Zack Sabre Jr. [SZKG] (Go2Sleep, 15:46)
G1 Climax 30 B Block: Hiroshi Tanahashi d. Juice Robinson (Samson Clutch, 14:16)
G1 Climax 30 B Block: Toru Yano [CHAOS] d. EVIL [Bullet Club] (Inside Cradle, 4:33)
G1 Climax 30 B Block: Tetsuya Naito [Los Ingobernables] d. Hirooki Goto [CHAOS] (Destino, 21:58)
Once again, Tetsuya Naito defeats Hirooki Goto, one of his favorite verbal punching bags. Yano is the true MVP of G1 30 don’t @ me. The Ace gets on the board... as does YOSHI-HASHI. Over SANDA. Poor SANADA. His loss here has made him a Twitter trending topic. Because he lost to YOSHI-HASHI. It is very likely this is where he begins a run because after all, so did Jay White in last year’s G1, and as I said before, nobody who is undefeated currently will be making the finals. Still, it doesn’t look good to be losing to YOSHI-HASHI, I admit.
Current B Block standings:
Naito: 6pts (3W 0D 0L) Yano: 6pts (3W 0D 0L) KENTA: 4pts (2W 0D 1L) Robinson: 4pts (2W 0D 1L)   Goto: 2pts (1W 0D 2L) Sabre: 2pts (1W 0D 2L) EVIL: 2pts (1W 0D 2L) Tanahashi: 2pts (1W 0D 2L) YOSHI-HASHI: 2pts (1W 0D 2L) SANADA: 0pts (0W 0D 3L)

It seems a board of directors meeting for Bushiroad was held today, and the result of that is Harold Meij will be out as President/CEO of New Japan Pro Wrestling as of 10/23/2020. The new President will be Takami Ohbari, who currently is the head of New Japan of America.
There’s been no indications given as to why the change is occurring. I do know that around these parts, the earliest days of his time as President were some of the rockiest for NJPW as far as the quality and presentation of the product, high as he was on Kenny Omega, leading to what we at this blog/podcast felt were some of the most unbearable main event matches in recent times. (We also know others do not share that opinion so please don’t flood our mentions.) At the same time, his handling of NJPW during the pandemic seemed to be the sanest, and safest, among wrestling companies around the globe.
There are some rumblings on Twitter that Meij was the real reason behind there being no formal relationship between NJPW and AEW, but who knows how much of that is true. Ohbari, for his part, seems to have done OK as head of NJoA thus far, although the pandemic certainly stifled NJoA’s ambitions as well.
Either way, best of luck to Ohbari as he takes over next month, and best of luck to Harold Meij in whatever it is he does next.
The next show takes place tomorrow, with A Block resuming.
- 9/30/2020, Tokyo Korakuen Hall
Yota Tsuji v. Yuya Uemura

G1 Climax 30 A Block: Kazuchika Okada [CHAOS] v. Taichi [SZKG]

Just watched this, and I guess they’re having a tournament with all their top U.S.-based wrestlers, and the winner will get a shot at the IWGP United States Championship, which makes sense except:
1) The current champion is AEW World Champion Jon Moxley
2) My understanding was that Mox’s AEW contract doesn’t allow him to wrestle for NJPW within the United States.
I’ve been wondering what they would do about this for a long time now, and I still don’t know, but at least this press release indicates that they have some kind of plan.   David Finlay even identified Jon Moxley by name, so it’s not like they’re trying to write him out of the product or anything like that.
As a fan, I feel like the best solution would be for NJPW and AEW to work out some sort of cross-promotional deal, something where Jon could appear on both Dynamite and this new Strong show.   Other AEW guys could show up on Strong as well, and beef up NJPW’s stateside roster.   Like, if we could get some sort of deal where KENTA beats Mox for the U.S. title on Strong, then challenges him for the AEW title at Full Gear, that’d be fucking incredible.   If it could lead to the Bullet Club’s U.S. contingent feuding with the Elite, that’d be even more awesome.
It probably isn’t that simple, though.    The most painless thing to do would probably be some sort of one-time waiver of Mox’s AEW contract, where he could appear at one (1) Strong show in the U.S., and drop the IWGP U.S. title to whoever.    The only issue with that is that AEW’s world champion would have to lose to an outsider, which probably wouldn’t sit well with AEW.     I guess if MJF wins the AEW title from Mox, that would make things less messy.
Alternately, they could just do what they did last year when Moxley couldn’t make it to Japan for his title defense.   Just invoke the 6-month rule and strip him of the title, and award it to the winner of this tournament.   But I feel like if they were going to do that, they would have announced it up front.
My fear is that NJPW is taking some sort of wait-and-see approach, where they’re hoping that somehow, some way, they can get Jon Moxley back in Japan again, and proceed along their ususal way.    And if that works, out, great, but something tells me Japan isn’t going to be letting Americans into their country for a long time.   The thing is, if their American wrestlers could travel freely to Japan, why bother doing this NJPW Strong show at all?   If I was Harold Meij, I’d want all my talent in the same country until things get back to normal.
Anyway, I’m curious to see how all this plays out.    Those Lion’s Break Collision shows have been okay so far, but they’re really short, and I’ve only seen like six guys, which made me wonder if they only had six guys to work with.   So NJPW Strong at least gives me some hope that they can make this work.

Video Message From Harold Meij Detailing Why NJPW Has Not Run Shows & Road To Returning
youtube
As you can see above, NJPW President & CEO Harold Meij has delivered a presentation detailing why NJPW has not run empty arena shows like some companies, Japanese or otherwise, and what it will take for NJPW to resume running. Only about a 10 minute watch, probably worth it.
