To wear fancy clothes and ornaments, to have your fill of food and drink and to waste all your money buying possessions is called the crime of excess. Oh, how these things go against the way of the Tao!
If you are at all familiar with traditional Chinese medicine, you are probably aware that it takes a more holistic look at the human body than Western medicine does. Last year, I had two ankle surgeries, visited a podiatric surgeon over a dozen times, and endured more than a hundred hours of physical therapy without anyone looking as high as my knees. I went to a massage therapist more recently, told her about my injury, and she immediately said, “I’m going to start with your hips.” After leaving the massage, I realized that it was the first time in almost a year that I had actually moved my hips while walking.
Of course, we know that the systems of the body are highly interdependent and inter-reactive. A limp in one leg stresses the other. Heart medicine can strain the kidneys. Hearing loss is associated with isolation and depression. We are whole bodies, each part playing a role in supporting the rest. Likewise, a family is a whole entity, and when one person is having a bad day, their bad mood radiates out to the others. A community is a whole entity, and when a factory closes, the shopkeepers will feel the loss of revenue from those who were laid off.
Why should those without children care to pay school taxes? Because those school children are part of their community, and having well-educated neighbors is beneficial. Why should those with health and money care to lift the addicted or mentally ill off the streets and give them treatment, financial support, and a home? For a hundred reasons, but one is that we can’t know what those people have to offer to the rest of us until we give them the opportunity to contribute.
Why does the Tao go to the level places – the low places? If we focus our energy and resources at the bottom, the lowest and neediest parts of society, we can raise the standard of society much faster than we could if we started toward the top. At their lowest, people are unable to help others because they can’t even help themselves. When we bring them up, we not only give them our compassion, we give them the capacity to help others. When more people are able to help, there is more help to be had. Heaping resources on those who already have enough contributes nothing.
