The 13 Most Common Fashion Mistakes Men Make
Dressing well does not have to be synonymous with conformity or "dressing up." Is your man making these errors? This men's style guide will teach you the 13 most common fashion faux pas that men make, as well as what you should do instead to look nice and classy. Cool men's fashion tips that you can start using right away! That being said, look below for some fashion faux pas you should definitely avoid:
Tumblr media
-  Photo created by halayalex on freepik Clothes that are too big or baggy FIT is the most important aspect of men's fashion. Even the most fashionable pieces will look dowdy on a body if the fit isn't nearly perfect. Make sure not to size up for comfort. When it comes to athletic clothing or inner wear like cotton vests, tighter fits with stretch material are preferable to baggy clothing. Basketball shorts should not be considered "general athletic shorts'' unless you are actually playing basketball. There are numerous options for athletic wear that are both functional and comfortable. Cargo shorts and pants Shorts with a lot of seams, pockets, and detail should be avoided. They add bulk and make you look frumpy and unkempt. These types of shorts and pants are appropriate for the right circumstances (combat, hiking, hunting), but not for everyday wear. Mixing incompatible fabrics or textures Mixing materials in your outfits should be avoided. Most materials are compatible with one another, but not all. A silky, gleaming dress shirt will look out of place with jeans. Athletic pants will look out of place with a short-sleeve button-up shirt. Athletic clothing, in general, can be worn with cotton but should not be dressed up. Smooth dress clothing, such as suit jackets and shiny shoes, will not look good with thick chinos or denim. Fastening all the buttons on suit jackets When wearing a suit jacket or blazer, always leave the bottom button undone (unless it's a one-button jacket). When you sit, unbutton them all, but you don't have to button them all when you stand. The origins of this rule can be traced back to King Edward VII, but honestly—just it's how things are done. Not all suit jacket buttons should be fastened. White crew socks Get rid of your white tube socks. There are alternatives that perform the same function while looking far superior. Instead, opt for black or gray ankle or calf-length socks, and only wear crew length socks when they're hidden beneath pants. Get rid of your white crew socks; they're unappealing! Socks with sandals When it comes to socks, never wear them with flip flops or sandals! How often does this need to be stated? If it's cold outside, don't make matters worse by wearing socks under your sandals. Simply wear closed-toed shoes. Crew socks with shorts When wearing shorts, you should never wear them with tall crew socks. Wear socks that are as close to the shoe's edge as possible (or completely hidden). Alternatively, you could wear sandals (without socks). Mixing too many patterns You can start breaking this rule as you develop your own personal style and become more comfortable with the rules. However, make sure that the patterns like in a printed lungi are of varying sizes. A small gingham can look good with a large striped tie, but if they're too close in size, they'll clash. Wearing the wrong shoes for the occasion Many men dress appropriately until they leave the house. That's when I put on my running shoes. They are, indeed, comfortable. Yes, they have the potential to ruin your entire outfit. Learn which shoes to wear with which outfits. If you're not working out, don't wear running shoes. Flip-flops always and forever Every now and then, swap out your flip flops for loafers or boat shoes. A good pair can be just as comfortable as a bad pair while looking a million times better. Wear something other than flip-flops to look instantly classier. Super wide ties Except for the exceptions listed in the fit guides above, your tie should be about 3.5 inches wide at its widest point. Wearing ties that are too wide will make you appear dated. Old, worn out jeans Upgrade to a nice dark-wash pair that fits well, and think about a medium-wash or tastefully ripped pair as a backup pair. These are the only type of jeans you should have in your closet. Light wash jeans are fine, but if the only reason they're light wash is that they're a decade old, it's time for a new pair. Pants with pleats Pleats will automatically date you and add bulk to your outfit. Look for flat front styles in your chinos and dress pants, and put away your pleated pants or shorts.

May I take Your Coat?
https://archiveofourown.org/works/25288321 For @livewire28
Bucky is a selkie, headed into the human world to find a potential mate. He has no intention of staying very long... until he does.
Wanda is closing up the tiki bar for the night and wishes this last-minute customer would hurry up and go... until she doesn't.
Inspired by several tumblr posts I’ve seen where the human offers the coat back after knocking it down, or whatever.
Bucky flopped up on shore, scratching his belly over the sand and wending his way up to the rocks. There was a cave there, long since used for such purpose. Human things were stored there, neat and tidy. If he was lucky, the rain barrel would be full and he could take a bit of a bath.
Long gone were the days that a half-dressed, scruffy stranger could walk into a seaside town and not immediately be run out by the local coppers. There were standards. He couldn’t look like a vagabond.
Humans were weird.
Bucky made his way to the cave and then shrugged out of his coat.
It always took him a moment to find his land legs again, and he was glad enough that there weren’t people looking at him. Not even his own kind.
The cave was cool, and well laid out, the earthen floor long since cleared of stone and debris, flat and firm under his feet. A few human style chairs were set around a flat surface. Tabul, Bucky thought was the word, or close enough.
The rain barrel was full and he drew a few buckets into the tub to wash the salt smell from his skin, to scrub out his hair. Things they didn’t really worry about during their day to day lives.
He checked the gift box; trophies from past loves and gifts for new courted mates. Never stolen. Selkies weren’t thieves. Take one, leave one.
A fine string of black pearls, intermixed with a rose pearl every five beads. That should be well enough. Human women preferred jewelry, men preferred weapons. Or gold. There was some of that in the chest, too.
Bucky took his own offering, a handful of pirate treasure that he’d gotten from one of the wrecks nearby. The sea was hard on things from the land, aside from treasure. Eventually, someone would come, check the box. Gather up that which could be crafted. Everyone contributed because the system benefited everyone.
If you wanted a child, or a mate, you went through the cave.
Bucky found clothes there, sealed in a zip locked bag. He knew about those, too. Plastic. It filled the ocean, no matter how much the selkies tried to gather it up and toss it back on the shore. But it kept clothing dry and free from dirt and stains while waiting for someone else to be able to use it.
He dressed. Finger combed out his hair, gently untangling the strands. He looked well enough to pass for a local, he guessed.
Slinging his coat over his arm, Bucky put on loose-fitting shoes -- he hated shoes, all selkie hated shoes, but the humans got mad if you weren’t wearing them.
Stupid human rules.
But it was the only way to be sure.
If a selkie mated with another selkie, they could birth seal pups, which was tolerable, or a selkie, which was ideal. Or a human child, which was not ideal at all.
Humans no longer looked at a child left on the beach or the docks as a blessing. The child would end up in the human foster care, sometimes adopted out, sometimes neglected, but often taken far away from the sea, too far for their parent to find them, so they would never know… until some years, or even generations later, when they had their own child.
Who might be a selkie.
But any selkie who took a human as their mate, the child would be selkie.
For the women, it was easier; come ashore, spend a few days with a relatively tolerable human, come home and have the baby. The only time that went wrong was if the human found and stole the selkie’s coat.
For men--
Well, there were a few options. Selkies weren’t thieves.
But the cost of a child was high; the cost of living a half-life among humans was high.
Many selkie men chose to raise a child not of their blood, help provide for a child with a selkie mate, adopt the offspring.
It wasn’t a bad plan, not really.
But Bucky wanted his own child.
Was that too much to ask?

Wanda sighed as the man walked into her bar. There was no dress code, aside from yes, please wear clothes. It was a beach bar, tiki themed and tacky, but it meant no one expected the floor to be swept. It was almost closing time, though, and she’d already shooed the rest of the locals and tourists out.
“It’s already last call,” she said. “I can get you one drink, and anything that’s left cooked in the kitchen, but that’s all.”
“That will be well enough,” the man said, and he was beautiful, really. Dark, windswept hair that looked like he’d been swimming most of the day. Blue eyes, cleft chin. Cheekbones that would worry the TSA, they were that sharp.
The clothes, not so much. A tourist tee from one of the shops up on the strip and ugly shorts with pineapples on them. Sandals, which wasn’t typical. But he carried a brown silk sport coat tucked over his arm. Gorgeous, almost golden. Glittery, reflecting back the light from the imitation tiki torches. The shop owner didn’t like smoke from real torches, so they had ugly fake electric things. And light up palm trees. It was tacky as shit.
Which meant, at least, her customer mostly matched the decor.
She wished she didn’t have to work the night shift -- she was always cranky during the evening -- but school was in the morning. One of these days, she was just going to collapse. Trying to do two full time gigs, and her side-hustle where she consulted for people doing gardening and helped them lay out and select plants. She barely got any time to breathe. Certainly relaxing was all the way out of the question.
Which didn’t make her the best host to a customer coming in to eat a plate of cold fries and drink a beer.
“Long day in the sun?”
“Something like that,” the man said, sitting down at the bar, moving gingerly. He didn’t look sunburned. Maybe he was just sore. Too much swimming.
“Well, we’re closing soon, so you enjoy your food. Yell if you need something, but I gotta start clean up. I was supposed to have help today, but both the other girls called out,” she said.
“Is there anything I can do to assist?”
Wanda didn’t quite scoff. Like a tourist would want to help do the dishes or put the stools up. “It’s just basic stuff. Put the seats up on the table, rake the floor for trash, empty--”
The man got up, drained his beer, and Wanda half expected him to leave without paying, saying he was going to leave a bad review and would be back to talk to the manager, because honestly that was what she was used to. Tourists were people with money, and most of the time, they were entitled pricks.
Instead, he wiped his mouth on the back of his arm, and then-- got to work putting up the stools.
“Thank you,” Wanda said. She probably shouldn’t let him help; Thaddeus Ross, her boss, would not be pleased with her if something happened to the man. Or even if he complained-- or if someone else complained. But she was so tired, really, what could it hurt, just this once? “My name’s Wanda.”
“Bucky,” the man said.
“Thanks, Bucky,” she said. “If you can do that, I’ll get the kitchen shut down, then take out the trash.”
“Will do, Wanda,” he said, and he stressed her name, like a caress.
She suppressed a shiver, headed into the kitchen. She didn’t have time or energy to worry about some guy.
Loaded the dishes into the industrial washer and started it. Sometimes she wished she had one of those at home. Once the dishes were in the rack, it took about four minutes to clean them. She had to be careful unloading because the dishes would be hot as hell, but it was nice.
And then she’d look at the space it needed and the cost and decide if she needed a plate in four minutes, she could just wash it in the sink.
By the time Wanda came back out to wipe down the bar, Bucky had put all the chairs up except the one he had been using, stacked all the trash bags by the door, and was raking the floor to get up all the random cigarette butts, spare change, and cruft that gathered around the tiki bar.
“Wow,” she said. “Nice job.” She took his plate back into the kitchen and left it by the washer. There was no point unloading the whole thing to wash one plate. Opening shift could get it tomorrow. “Here--” she snagged his jacket, flipped up the last stool, and then offered it to him. “Thanks for your help.”
Bucky reached out his hand tentatively for the jacket, as if he were shocked that she’d touched it. Or given it back. Or something. She couldn’t help petting it. The material was so soft.
But when he reached for it, his fingers brushing the fabric, a jolt of heat, of desire, of-- something passed from her to him and back.
“You-- want to go to one of the all night pancake houses up the way and buy a girl a cup of coffee?” her mouth said before her brain engaged. She never asked anyone on a date, even if she was interested.
“Yes,” Bucky said, and his voice was husky and seductive. “I would like that very much, I think.”

what i packed to go to scout summer camp
as i’ve mentioned a bit lately, i spent a week at a scouts bsa summer camp working on earning merit badges and just generally having a good time doing scouting things. as girls have just recently been allowed into scouts bsa, this is the first summer (at least on a national scale) that girls will be attending scouts bsa summer camps and thus resources are limited on what camp is like, what to pack (specifically for girls), etc. so i decided i’d talk about what i packed (or what i wished i had) for my week!
clothing
class a uniform
this is kind of obvious for most scouts, but besides just traveling in them, the camp i was at asked us to wear them for evening flags and dinner, as well as the flag retirement ceremony they had
4 sports bras
i don’t mind rewearing stuff like this for a couple days, especially if i don’t get super sweaty during the day, so i don’t bring one for every day
8 pairs underwear
bring a pair for every day you’re going to be at camp, and a couple extra pairs for emergencies. hanes has underwear made from stretchy wicking material, which i greatly prefer when i’m outside as it’s both super breatheable and easy to wash if i need to. i don’t remember the exact product name but i get them in packs of four at target
9 pairs socks
i brought less than 9 pairs of socks, but i’m recommending that you bring at least nine. this was the only thing that towards the end of the week i started to get worried that i would run out of, especially because i wanted to make sure i keep my feet clean and dry so i went through a couple pairs some days. as i wore tennis shoes all week, i brought low cut athletic socks i got at khol’s or target or somewhere like that (just make sure they’re not cotton)
pajamas
i took nike athletic shorts and a quick dry shirt. please please please don’t sleep in cotton clothing if you can avoid it, you sweat as you sleep, which will make the cotton damp, and then you will get chilled as the night goes on, leaving you feeling like you’re clammy and freezing even in your sleeping bag
3 class b shirts
my troop gave all the girls who went to camp 3 class b shirts, which i found to be enough as i rewore them a couple times throughout the week. if your troop doesn’t provide class b shirts, just bring more regular shirts
2-3 regular shirts
while this isn’t something i packed, they definitely would have been nice to have to wear after showers, while hanging around camp, etc. just to change things up from wearing my class b’s
4 pairs shorts
i packed 3 pairs of patagonia baggies and one pair of patagonia barely baggies and i loved having them. not only are they super comfortable, very durable and quick to dry, but i was never afraid they were going to slip off while whitewater rafting or swimming
1 pair leggings
this is another thing that i didn’t pack but wish i had, as we had what i felt was an unseasonably cold week while i was at camp
1/4 zip pullover
i took one from rei like this and was super glad to have it, again because it was pretty chilly. i wore it pretty much all day, every day while i was there and felt like it did a great job of odor control (though i didn’t actually sweat that much while in it so that may be part of it)
2 one piece swimsuits
i only packed one of these (i didn’t want to spend the money on a second one, as i would only wear it at camp) but would say that having two would have been nice, not only for the variety but also because the one i took got pretty rough smelling towards the end of the week due to the scuzzy lake water
rain coat
this is a pretty obvious thing to bring, but i wore mine almost every day, not because it was raining but because it was the only other jacket i had besides my 1/4 zip and it helped to act as a wind breaker
2 pairs tennis shoes
though i wore the same pair the whole week, i would definitely recommend bringing two pairs in case one gets wet
flip flops
to use for shower shoes. most scout camps don’t allow you to wear open toed shoes except for in the shower, so no need to bring your chacos or similar sandals
water shoes
again, we were required to wear closed toed shoes for water activities so i took a pair of my mom’s old water shoes from when she windsurfed to wear when we went whitewater rafting. luckily though, we weren't required to wear them while swimming but every camp is different so make sure you get a pair that are comfortable
gear
footlocker
i took a footlocker like this one because it’s lockable, durable, and waterproof for the most part. i was able to fit everything i took in it with some careful arranging and it was able to slide under my cot in my tent
sleeping pad
while my camp provided us with cots, i wanted some extra comfort so i took my therm-a-rest z pad to put on top of it. i had no problems with it sliding off my cot during the night
sleeping bag
i took my marmot trestles 15 and was glad to have its warmth. some people recommend just bringing a light sleeping bag or sheets but i would say opt for your full sleeping bag, even if it’s going to be warm because you never know how chilly it may get at night
pillow
i would definitely recommend bringing one of these, especially because weight isn’t an issue with packing. i just took a small one i made using a pillow form and fleece i bought at a craft store
headlight + extra batteries
i much prefer a headlight to a flashlight as it leaves my hands free. it can also be hung in your tent to make a tent light in a pinch. always remember extra batteries!
2 water bottles
i took my 32 oz nalgene bottles, carrying one with me throughout the day and leaving one by my cot so i’d have one in case i needed water during the night
hammock and straps
the camp i go to (like most scout camps i’m assuming) is pretty infamous for its ‘hammock cities’ that develop in campsites, where scouts stack their hammocks and just generally form clusters of hammocks so i made sure to bring mine. i loved having it to hang out in while we were chilling in camp
clothesline + clothes pins
nice to hang wet clothes on (obviously) but also just air out the clothes i had worn that day. i have one from nite ize (i don’t think they make it anymore) that is a piece of paracord with two clips on the end that allow you to circle a tree and clip it back on itself, as well as adjust how long your rope is. i could totally use a regular piece of paracord and just tie it around a tree but i have this so,,,,i use it (hmu if you find something like what i talked about online though)
mesh laundry bag
i bought one in the laundry section at target for something like $10
toiletries
toothbrush + toothpaste
deodorant
chapstick
lotion
razor
soap and shampoo
liners/pads/tampons
even if you’re not supposed to be on your period that week, stuff happens and it’s better to be prepared (or share with someone in need)
2 bath towels
i found this to be plenty, as i dried them between uses and sometimes kept one in my bag when i went swimming though i never actually used it
3 washcloths
i took two but an extra would have been nice to have
daypack
28 liter daypack
i took my gregory 28 l daypack similar to this one and it had plenty of space for what i carried. i originally was going to take the backpack i use for school but was concerned that if it got wet, it would take forever to dry so i opted for my this bag instead
scout handbook
though i didn’t use it that much, i always take it with me on scout trips and recommend taking it with you
sunscreen + bug spray
most camps don’t allow aerosol canisters so keep that in mind when buying/packing
playing cards + uno cards
good ways to pass free time. pack them in a ziploc bag so they don’t get wet!
notebook + 2 pens
i took a regular sized notebook but most people brought a much smaller notebook, which i would recommend. how much writing you do depends on the merit badge classes you take but you won’t need a full sized notebook that’s for sure. remember and extra pen or two as well
first aid kit
not only is this just a good thing to have in general (i have this one), if you’re getting your first aid merit badge, you will need to show this for one of the requirements
portable phone charger + cord
every camp and troop is different in regards to phones but my troop was pretty relaxed in regards to them so i took my anker powercore and it was more than enough for how little i used my phone
sunglasses
tissues
what i took and didn’t need/use
rain pants
while i would still recommend packing these, i didn’t use them as it didn’t rain that much and when it did i didn’t really care if my shorts and legs got wet
camp chair
i took my rei flexlite chair but ended up not using it as in camp we either sat at the provided picnic table or in our hammocks
sleeping bag liner
as i took my regular sleeping bag and it didn’t get super cold at night, i didn’t need this
book
i took a book thinking i would read in my free time or before bed, but i ended up hanging out with my troop during free time and being too tired to read before bed
i hope this information will be useful to someone out there, even if you use it for something besides scout camp! let me know if you have any questions/comments/thoughts!

Shoes Every Girl Should Own
When it comes to shoes there are so many different types, varieties, styles, and colors for all occasions and types of people. Now these staple shoes for me may be different for you depending on your style and what you consider basics, but overall I went off the most commonly owned basic staple shoes.
1. A Basic Heel
Tumblr media
Okay, now this may not be everyone’s cup of tea but as you get older owning a simple heel is important for wearing to job interviews, formal occasions, or parties. There are many options out there when it comes to owning a pair of heels. Personally my go to heel for any occasion is a black or nude block heel with small straps. The reason being because this type of heel is very versatile since it is so simple and dainty. It can be dressed up by being worn with: dressy pants, skirts, a dress, jumpsuit, etc. Or it can be worn more casually with a pair of boyfriend jeans or a simple pant. The heel itself is also more comfortable when it’s blocky because the base of the heel is wider providing more support when walking and depending on heel height lessening your chance of rapid heel pain, if any. This heel is very popular amongst girls to wear during homecoming so there are many places to find one that is inexpensive and will suit your style. For this type of shoe you don’t need to find one that is expensive in order for it to do its job. Now for more of black tie white tie occasions or a serious business vibe go towards owning a classic stiletto heel which ranges from both high end to moderate so you can find/own a little bit of both.

2. Sandals
Tumblr media
Along the line of open toed shoes is sandals. A flip flop is a basic need which almost everyone already owns. It can be found for very cheap starting at $1 and is used for sanitary reasons like when using somebody else's shower, for a day out at the beach/pool, or when just lounging around the house. Sandals, however, provide more support and comfort and are more commonly worn for spring/summer outfits. For me a brown strappy sandal is the way to go. During the spring time a brown or nude colored sandal is the perfect color contrast for brighter colors or floral patterns. Especially if you’re wearing a floral pattern of  lighter colors brown will tend to match more. During the warmer seasons wearing black is more of a harsh and too dark of a color, so if you want to go with a more spring/summer vibe stick to lighter or neutral colored sandals. You will also notice to that brands typically have sandals which come in a variety of lighter and brighter colors.

3. Athletic Shoes
Tumblr media
Everyone person no matter how athletic should own at least one pair of tennis shoes. Tennis shoes are often misperceived as being dad like, to colorful, or even not fashionable enough. However there are plenty of tennis shoes out there in the market that come in multiple varieties so you find one that suits your style best. Yes! There are even simplistic, light weight, and trendy ones out there. Just like most people I was also never of fan of really colorful shoes but brands such as Nike or Adidas make some really nice sleek black or white tennis shoes. You always want to have a pair of tennis shoes for the reasons of them being such versatile shoes, you can wear out for exploring a city, when you’re doing lots of walking, running or performing an athletic activity. Overall my favorite thing about athletic shoes is that you can find ones specific to your needs. For example there are shoes specific to running, hiking, or just walking use, and etc.
(photos courtesy of: Nike)
4. Sneakers
Tumblr media
When it comes to sneakers this includes shoes like Vans, Converse or your everyday street style shoes. My favorite basic pair which is a staple that everyone already owns are Vans Old Skool a classic for being an everyday use shoe. The black and white combo and style of this shoe literally makes it match with every outfit. Even when scrolling through instagram and finding styling videos I always see girls style their Old Skools with skirts and even dresses. Overall my favorite thing about this shoe is one how it goes with everything, two how long these shoes last, and the style of the shoe including the combo of canvas and suede. Along the lines of sneakers are slip ons. Now these are the perfect swap for a traditional ballet slip on if that it is not your vibe. This shoe is great for wearing with those outfits when you’re not exactly sure what type of shoes to wear. Personally, I believe that the slip on sneakers look best with ankle cut or cropped jeans.

5. Boots
Tumblr media
For this category I will be talking about three different types of boots. One is the rain boot which unless you don't live in place that gets a lot of rain, is a staple item. Even if you live in a place like California which does not get much rain sometimes the weather patterns are weird and we get those weeks or random days of rain. That is why instead of storing the traditional rain boot which can be bulky and take up space opt for a low cut ankle bootie rain boot. These rain boots will still do the job of keeping your feet dry but they are also a lot less bulkier and lightweight. Also appearance wise I‘d go for the look of low cut rain boots just because of the style. As for over the knee boots, these are great if you want to elongate your legs/body or give the appearance of thinner legs. Now on the spectrum of thinner legs, if you do have skinnier legs then go towards adjustable over the knee boots with ties in the back so it can fit to your liking. Over the knee boots are also more on the girly feminine side for people pair them with dresses and skirts. This is also a great way to add to your outfit if you are feeling lazy. You can always throw on an oversized sweatshirt (with shorts underneath of course) and put on some OTK boots which give the appearance of a more put together outfit. Depending on where you buy the OTK boots is can be both affordable and expensive so buy something which you know will last awhile but for a good price. Finally, every girl must own at least one pair of regular boots. Whether that be ankle boots, boots with heels, combat boots or fuzzy boots such as UGGs owning a pair of boots is a staple. Boots can be worn dressed up or down and are great during the fall and winter time when the weather is colder.

6. Statement Shoes
For this last section, I though I’d throw in something a little extra which is not necessity but something which I know quite a few people own. That is statement shoes or shoes which are life of an outfit. Statement shoes can include one of kind custom sneakers, unique high heels, or out of the norm shoes in general. For example, shoes that are covered in bling, have a uncommon print/design to them, or are very bright color are types of statement shoes which are typically worn with a more plain or monochromatic outfit. For most women this is just an extra in their closet which they prefer to own but even then we all have that one pair of shoes which we only wear for certain occasions or at certain times.
I hope you enjoyed today’s blog all about basic shoes every girl should own because let’s be honest here we all for the most own plenty of shoes and could not go without the ones we wear everyday. Well that’s all for today folks!
Till next time!

I was prepared for a trip to the middle of the jungle in a war-torn country (Nicaragua – Surfing during the Revolution), instead I arrived to Costa Rica – a place so safe and organized it looked like Little America (or a Latin neighborhood in LA to be exact). Credit cards and US dollars are accepted in most places (EUR are NOT), tap water is potable in Costa Rica, roads are well maintained (where there are roads), the weather is very pleasant at 80F max even in the midst of the rainy season and mosquitos are not bird-sized vultures like the ones I’m used to back home in Plovdiv, Bulgaria.
Tumblr media
PC: Rapture Surfcamps
Costa Rica and Nicaragua are tropical countries located slightly north of the Equator. As James Kaiser, a favorite travel photographer and guide books writer, puts it:
“Located at 10 degrees latitude (slightly north of the Equator), the sun shines brighter and the rain falls harder here.”
Tumblr media
PC: @sam_sherring for Rapture Surfcamps
Depending on whether you are visiting Central America in the dry or wet season you would need to prepare somewhat differently. Wet season (also known as “green” season) is from May to October and is more noticeable at higher altitudes where it can get colder and much wetter. The tops of the mountains get a lot more rain than the beach so if you are planning on hiking volcanos or exploring the jungle, maybe you’d prefer to visit in the dry season. If you are looking to spend more time by the beach, rain season shouldn’t affect you that much, especially if you head to Nicaragua or the Northwest province of Guanacaste in Costa Rica. The ocean water is warm year round, beaches are uncrowded and surf is amazing! Sure, you may experience a downpour in the afternoon but you are already wet from swimming and surfing in a storm is the coolest experience anyways 🙂
Tumblr media
PC: Free Images at Unsplash.com
The dry season is from November to April, which coincides perfectly with the chilly weather in the US, Europe, and Canada. Expect more tourists and some popular beach areas such as Jaco, Santa Teresa and Manuel Antonio may be overpopulated.
Essentials to bring with you to Nicaragua and Costa Rica
Bikini / board shorts – bring all the pairs you’ve got, even purchase some new ones. There will be VERY few times that you’ll be living outside of your beach gear. What is a mermaid without a weekly supply of bikinis?! And nothing else dries in the tropics anyways…
Rashguard – cheaper to order online while at home and you’ve got more choices. Provides SPF protection for your upper body while surfing (you’ll need it 🙂 ) and will serve as a barrier between you and the board (called “rashguard” for a reason). The bikini cut 1mm wetsuit is also a great option and finally I found a place where to wear this uber cute garment, even if I were slightly “hot” in it 🙂
Tumblr media
Sunscreen – 50 SPF ocean-friendly water-resistant sunscreen for the beach and zinc paste for surfing. Bring double the amount of sunscreen as your favorite brand may not be available here and it is at least double the price. Zinc is the only thing that will save you during surfing as it is the ultimate sunscreen barrier.

Hat / sunshades – it’s the tropics, it’s hot and sunny (even in the wet season) 🙂 Any wide-brimmed hat will do, the sunshades should be polarized if possible or with very dark lenses at least. The sun is very strong, protect your eyes!
Mosquito repellent – some sources recommend DEET, others mentioned mosquito repellent wristbands. I opted in for All-Natural repellent and made my own with citronella, orange and lavender oils – I smell great, cut on “french perfume” costs and the bugs don’t bug me 🙂

Flashlight / headlamp – a headlamp is something I always bring with me wherever I go. Big towns in Costa Rica and Nicaragua have plenty of street lighting but small beach towns can be dark at night and the areas where I stayed were good 30min away from civilization down dirt roads and in pitch black jungle. At hostels or surf camps, even if you don’t need the headlamp outside, it may come in handy when you enter your room late at night and don’t want to bother everyone else sleeping…
Sarong (or a light micro fiber quick dry towel for guys) – you can use it as a beach dress and it is lighter than a regular towel. Bath towels are usually provided at hostels/camps.
Power banks / battery packs – if the electricity goes out or if you are on a long bus trip, you don’t want to be caught without your electronics fully charged. Plugs are 110 Vt, US/Canada standard, plan accordingly and bring your adapters.
Travel insurance – I hope you won’t need it but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t get it 🙂 I recommend WorldNomads and I use it for all my adventure travels.
Hiking / water shoes – in general flip flops and sneakers should do, but if you plan to go on adventures bring hiking shoes and sports sandals/water shoes. NO, you will not need high heels or elegant shoes, spare yourself shlepping that extra weight.
Waterproof phone case (cord that hangs on your neck) – if you’d like to use your camera while adventuring on land and water, buy a waterproof case and a cord that hangs off your neck. You don’t want to drop your phone while rafting, horseback riding, or going on boat trips (even if the phone itself is waterproof). For surfing and in-water photography you need a special water casing for your camera.
First aid kit – you will get insect bites, board cuts, rock scratches that you don’t want to visit the doctor for. Don’t let minor surface wounds ruin your trip. Be prepared, bring a first aid kit that works for you. Moleskin, bandaids, wound treatments, topical pain relief balms, muscle relaxants if you get sore, Alka Seltzer for hangovers, insect bite salve, burn medicine (you will get a sunburn, I promise you that too), and any prescription medication you use.
Tumblr media
Day pack – If you are smart, you’ll travel with a 45L backpack on your back and a 20L day pack with your valuables on your chest. I wasn’t that smart (or more like I was going for work for a few months rather than a couple weeks) so I took a medium suitcase and a computer backpack (in addition to my daypack).
Additional items you’d want to have in rainy season
Sturdy raincoat or poncho that covers your backpack too – trust me, when it rains, it pours and it will get you soaked
Long pants – preferably water-proof if you have such or hiking pants that unzip under the knee so the part under your rain jacket remains dry
Warm clothes – at least one sweatshirt / sweater, jeans / long pants and a warm hat if you plan to hike at altitude.
Depending on the type of trip you are planning to take, these are some optionals
Pocket knife or multitool (I always have a knife with me in checked luggage 🙂 )
Trecking poles – I rarely use them but I would it is were a strenuous volcano hike
Water filter (or water tablets if you drink from unsafe sources) – Life Straw is great, so are charcoal filters and water purification drops.
What to Pack for Costa Rica and Nicaragua I was prepared for a trip to the middle of the jungle in a war-torn country (Nicaragua - Surfing during the Revolution), instead I arrived to Costa Rica - a place so safe and organized it looked like Little America (or a Latin neighborhood in LA to be exact).

A GUIDE TO Ceremony Visitor Clothing BY Coiffe Encipher Ceremony Garb Codes Demystified: Choosing the Rightmost Garb At few mark in our lives, most of us play a contest that is exclusive presented on observance invitations: deciphering the tog cypher. Often, the communication misused to inform the congruent typewrite of dress for the event leaves a lot to be desirable, especially if you don't attend these sorts of occasions oft. So, if you don't eff your "black tie optional" from your "dressy easy," here are whatsoever guidelines to get you on the justice rail. Caucasian Tie A colour tie hymeneals is the most schematic of the lot. Traditionally, this effectuation floor-length gowns for women and tuxedos for men. This is also an allot case for women to indispose opera-length handwear, either in unintegrated or stuff matched with the make, but the addition of gloves is nonmandatory. In fact, straight men are pleased to acquire a set of gloves in either unintegrated or discolor for the affaire. Women also condition to select situation that champion contend the scrubs and should select both of their finer jewellery for the circumstance. It is also great to observe that wearing a timepiece can be thoughtful improper during a covered tie concern, as it suggests you are watching the indication because there may be somewhere added you'd rather be. Bound any bags to exclusive a runty whelm, and attain trusty all hair and makeup choices reflect the literary nature of the event. Sarcastic Tie Inglorious tie weddings are also highly nominal, though they offer writer malleability that their discolor tie counterparts. Sarcastic tie weddings are solace an daytime affaire and men are noneffervescent typically prospective to don a eveningwear, but there is no necessity to decay handwear. Women get added options away from full-length conventional gowns in that upscale cocktail dresses, dressy separates, and buckram "little individual dresses" can be expedient. The most primary construct for women is that they should delay with dress dresses disregardless of the length. When in incertitude, analyze whether the see would be appropriate when visualized next to a eveningwear. If laladpoiufhffouj- it doesn't seem to fit that destruct of prescribed dress, then it is superior to study otherwise options. Dress and Smuggled Tie Optional An invitation that states the change cypher is ceremonial or person tie facultative can lose things notion a bit unclear. Notwithstanding, that doesn't meanspirited it is a stimulating sensing to uncovering. Men can listen in tuxedos within the human tie beautify stock or in stygian suits. Since men are surrendered the alternative to position somewhat fewer formally, women can often superior anything from a unsound dress to one that falls author into the cocktail clothing aggregation. For both men and women, the await is noneffervescent willful to be ceremonious, so it is improve to air on the view of slightly overdressed than low. But don't shy gone from having a minuscule more fun with the accessories specified as with a statement necklace or an attention-grabbing shell. Original Unfortunate Tie and Festive The air of a fanciful black tie or a festive ceremonious circumstance ofttimes leads to error when ceremonial guests honours indicate the missive. Notwithstanding, this just means it is encouraged to display a younger solon personality when it comes to vesture. The air is to discover a balance between starchy and fun. In many cases, the generative or festive elements are designed to jazz guests tog based on the tune of a ceremony. For ideal, if the bride and train are having a 1920s inspired rite wedge heel wedding shoes, then intermixture festively way guests jazz the deciding of choosing vesture that works with that motif. Similarly, festive prettify for a ceremony neighbouring the star winter holidays could countenance seasonally congruous flag and yet the flash of whatsoever sequins. Semiformal When a nuptials invitation requests formal or dressy light, it is oftentimes easier to expect of it as a enterprise nominal circumstance. Men present traditionally endure a check in a name that would lot for a more conventional impact environment belk formal dresses. Women may also take gasp suits or a correspondent, employ allot arrange. In few cases, the unconcerned even releases guests from the traditional proceedings and tie duty. Men can don slacks with a collared shirt while women may prefer garment and a blazer or a pencil border and blouse. The primal concept, again, is not to aim too unliterary. And this agency jeans, no matter how pleasant, are but a no-go. Dressy Cursory Dressy irregular is the introductory inform where jeans may be an deciding. Withal, they should be in respectable fix and not overly seedy or colourless. Additionally, they should be finished up with items like a sharp jacket or dressy blouse. Situation should stay on the more prescribed take, as sneakers or anything similarly light would be malapropos.
Tumblr media
Beach Formal A ritual on a beach automatically substance destined titular attire is apt not required plus size a line formal dresses, as it is taken the attire needs to be right for the dirt and breaker guests present convergence. Nevertheless, that doesn't normal jeans and t-shirts with flip-flops are effort to fly. Since a beach hymeneals you module be up against the elements men should select a season jibe (no ties required) that entireness with sandals time women should superior a dressier sundress that can be tea or a knee size clothing with a champaign sandal. Daylight A diurnal nuptials is typically inferior ceremonious than an daylight function. This implementation, unless a unique clothing is requested, it is oftentimes arrogate to slant unplanned, much as an appurtenances that would be suited for a land club or corresponding environs. Ofttimes, you can jazz cues from the environs in which the affair faculty bed gauge white graduation dress. A religion party followed by an interior salutation may inform a writer ceremonial way than a garden rite with an outdoorsy receipt. Where to Get Solon Info If you perceive a rite invitation and aren't trustworthy just what overdress is allot, you may necessity to think exploit author message. Yet, try not to demand the bride or honeymooner (they change sufficiency on their bag). Instead, see if a member of the wedding company can render the clearness you impoverishment. Often, they bed a moral savvy of what the couple is deed for and can furnish you with an overview or what is being requested. Horseback Riding Boots for Beginners
Tumblr media
You’ve decided to take up horseback riding – exciting!  But what are the best beginner horseback riding boots?
To truly get the most out of the experience and ensure you don’t miss out, you need to invest in a few pieces of crucial gear like helmet, pants and boots.  The shoes and boots that most people have in their closets will not make for an enjoyable ride and could even jeopardize your safety, so read on for some pointers about the right footwear.
Horseback Riding Footwear Must-haves
1-Inch to 2-inch tall heel.  While riding – and especially for new riders – it’s possible for a foot to slip through the stirrups.  Not comfortable and not safe. A modest height heel will stop that from happening.
Moderate traction on the sole of the boot.  Your sole will be the main part of your foot that’s touching the stirrup and you don’t want it to slide.
…But not too much traction.  A hiking boot, or a similar boot with deep treads, may get jammed in the stirrup in case of a fall.  Hiking boots are also bulky and boxy which are hard to get in and out of stirrups.
Enclosed foot.  Don’t even dream of wearing flip-flops or sandals; I don’t want to imagine your foot if a horse steps on it!  Your shoes need to offer some degree of protection in case this happens.
No laces near the foot.  Laces – and tongues – can get caught in the stirrups or other nearby gear.  Certain footwear – field boots, riding sneakers – do have laces, riding boot manufacturers have made these laces safe.  Your average running shoes are not.
Horse Riding Boot Styles and Footwear Styles
There are many different styles of boots so choose whatever feels good on your feet, fits your budget and is suitable for your type of riding.
Important note: Before you explore your options below, if you are taking up riding to compete in a specific discipline like dressage, jumping, etc, check with the organization that governs your competitions for any riding boot requirements they have.
First of all, boots can be divided into English riding boots and Western riding boots.
English Riding Boots
These boots were specifically designed for English-style riding, in which the stirrup leathers can chafe, rub or even pinch your legs if you don’t have the right gear (boots and/or pants).
The boots are mostly made out of leather but can also be made out of materials like PVC and rubber.  In addition to choices about material, English riding boots come in several different styles, generally falling into one of two categories: tall riding boots and short riding boots.
On a side note, many English riders also ride draft horses. They are awesome, and if you are looking for horseback riding boots for beginners because you have a draft horse then click on the link to head over to that article and see all about them.
Tall riding boots (eg: dress boots, dressage boots, field boots, Footwear)
As the name suggests – states outright, in fact – tall riding boots are tall and come most of the way up your calf.  These stylish numbers were seen in Downton Abbey and have long been considered the standard for English horseback riding.
If you’re getting a tall boot, know that there are calf widths to choose from in addition to shoe widths.
Dress boots:
Rigid and relatively inflexible: rather than being a bad thing, this is actually helpful to give extra stability while riding
Style tip: that piece that comes up higher only on the outside of the knee on some boots is called a ‘Spanish Top’
Field boots:
Look similar to dress boots but are more flexible, and this flexibility can have a noticeable, positive impact if you’re in jumping competitions
Most easily differentiated from dress boots by the laces on the top of the foot at the ankle; dress boots are smooth across the top.  (Were you wondering about the laces, given the list of must-haves? The laces are tight in the boot and can’t be caught in the stirrup.  Most field boots have a zipper up the calf to put the boot on and take it off.)
Short riding boots (eg: jodhpur boots, paddock boots, work boots)
Short riding boots, although not the traditional footwear, are preferred by many riders for a few reasons: easier to pull on and off, easier to size, potentially more comfortable in warmer temperatures, and usually quite a bit cheaper.
These are the most popular choice for riders who are just beginning and for children, although many transition into tall boots as they gain experience.  While they are called ‘short’, these boots still go above the ankle, but no calf-sizing is required.
You may want some protection for your legs while riding; wearing gaiters or half chaps with these boots will help.  It will also give the impression of wearing a tall boot.
Jodhpur boots:
Have a strap or elastic sides for easy pulling on/off
Often have wooden soles
Frequently made out of fine leather
Paddock boots:
Typically worn pleasure riding and working around the barn
Mostly made out of a more durable material that can be worn all-day
Usually have an extra layer of material called a ‘toe cap’
Might have a steel toe for added protection
Boots for English disciplines
For English disciplines like show jumping, dressage, hunter jumper, eventing, and saddle seat, you will need dress boots or field boots for competitions.  Rules might be relaxed for children’s beginner classes, where paddock boots are often allowed.
Western Horseback Riding Boots
Tumblr media
Western Riding Boots also known as Cowboy Boots, come in a variety of sizes, colours and styles.
Western boots are typically made of cowhide but can also be made of a wide variety of materials: alligator, crocodile, snakeskin, ostrich, bison, lizard and certain marine creatures like stingray and sturgeon.  Western boots are recognizable around the world for their distinctive look and famed for their durability. Did you know, the original purpose of the extensive, decorative stitching was to reinforce the boot so it wouldn’t sag or fall over?
Just as there are many materials to choose from, there are many styles: classic, shortie, work, roper, buckaroo, riding and stockman.  All have the recommended heel height, no laces or tongues, and have a pointed toe to make it easier to guide your foot into the stirrup.
amzn_assoc_tracking_id = "thehorsedispatch-20"; amzn_assoc_ad_mode = "manual"; amzn_assoc_ad_type = "smart"; amzn_assoc_marketplace = "amazon"; amzn_assoc_region = "US"; amzn_assoc_design = "enhanced_links"; amzn_assoc_asins = "B00U9ZFCPY"; amzn_assoc_placement = "adunit"; amzn_assoc_linkid = "2994ff83a92ea5ba07a3bc4405d90f3b"; amzn_assoc_tracking_id = "thehorsedispatch-20"; amzn_assoc_ad_mode = "manual"; amzn_assoc_ad_type = "smart"; amzn_assoc_marketplace = "amazon"; amzn_assoc_region = "US"; amzn_assoc_design = "enhanced_links"; amzn_assoc_asins = "B079RSV745"; amzn_assoc_placement = "adunit"; amzn_assoc_linkid = "e229ded61f00f15c939d4379f3f3ac8a";
Distinctions between the boots are
How tall they are: the shortie, roper and work boot are all 6-10” tall; the classic and the stockman are ~12” tall; the riding boot is 14” tall, as is buckaroo which is definitely designed for show
The depth of the decorative throat or ‘scallop’ (the pointy dip against your shin at the front of the boot) with the buckaroo, riding, and stockman having the deepest scallops
The extent of the stitching simply because the riding western boot is so tall and plain, it looks similar to English boots, such that Western riding boots appear in both English and Western disciplines.  Instead of loops to pull the boots on, they typically have buckles at the ankle and the top of the shin
Weight, with the shorter boots claiming the crown for being lighter, and therefore also cooler in warm temperatures
Cost, where the shorter boots save you a bit of coin over the tall boots
If you’re looking for your boots to do double duty outside the barn and into a social scene, avoid the tallest boots (and make sure your boots are clean) and you can step out with confidence and style.
Many of the boots listed here and ones that you will find are double purpose. They perform the function of helping you ride the horse, but also help you with a trendy look. It is important to remember that being safe when you are a beginner is paramount, and more important than looking good. That doesn’t mean that you can do both, however, and some people really go all out when purchasing their riding boots. Have fun. but stay safe.
Boots for Western disciplines
The competition requirements for boots in Western disciplines are much more relaxed than English disciplines.  Pretty much any cowboy boot will do, whether you’re cutting, barrel racing, roping, or trail riding.
In a nutshell, here are the steps to find the right boot:
Check if there are dress code requirements for the type of riding you’ll be doing
Determine if you’ll be riding more than working in the barn, or the other way around, or an equal amount of both
Determine what weather you’ll be wearing the boots in
Figure out how much you want to spend
Try on some boots
There are few activities that can produce the variety of emotions that horseback riding can: excitement, exhilaration, nervous anticipation, adrenalin rush, teamwork, accomplishment, satisfaction and serenity (to name a few).  And every good emotion you’re seeking can be compromised if you have inadequate boots for your purpose. Use this guide to get your shortlist of boots, try some on, listen to the experts, and then ride comfortably and safely off into the sunset.
FAQ Section
What Kind of Boots Should I Wear For Horse Riding?
As Discussed above the right choices include riding boots, cowboy boots or footwear with a heel. The Heel is important because it stops your foot from going through the stirrup. It is important to get boots that cover the ankle and don’t have extra pieces that can get caught in the saddle or stirrup. Boots or other sturdy shoes with heels (1/2 to 3/4 inch).
What are the Best Riding Boots To Buy?
The best riding boots you can buy are easy to pull on, have a heel and fit your foot snug so you can enjoy your riding experience. Cowboy boots fit all of these criteria and are designed for riding. There are also English riding boots available in a wide variety of styles and sizes.
Are Paddock Boots Good for Riding?
Yes, Jodphur or paddock boots are English styles of riding boots that only go up the ankle. Many people also pair these with half shaps and it makes for a great everyday riding, hacking and training footwear choice. A quality pair will be good for all-day wearing, even to wear around the barn for chores.
Can You wear Sneakers Horseback Riding?
You definitely can, but you have to consider safety. There are companies that are now making “riding sneakers” or “riding shoes” they are adequate, but you have to make sure they have some kind of heel. Never wear sandals or flip flops, getting stepped on by a horse can be very damaging to your foot and will bruise and even break bones. Make sure you wear proper footwear.
Can you Wear Rain Boots Horseback Riding?
Yes, you can wear rain boots, or rubber boots horseback riding. What you will find is that they will become uncomfortable over time, and may give you blisters. The heel in most rain boots is adequate for the task, however. You may also find that the feeling of your foot against the horse is less sensitive with a thick rubber boot. As you get better as a rider you will find that feeling the horse through your riding boot is important, and rain boots may not be the best for that.
Can you Wear Cowboy Boots Horseback Riding?
Yes, most definitely. Cowboy boots are specifically designed for horseback riding, and when riding western are the best. Do not wear sandals or flip flops, even when on vacation, you really need something with a heel to be safe. Cowboy boots are designed with a heel so they sit well in the stirrup and don’t go through. They also don’t have laces or a tongue that can get caught in the saddle or the stirrup. You will also want to invest in a good pair so that your feet are comfortable and don’t get sore.
What other equipment do I need as a beginner?
We have a whole section of this website dedicated to riding equipment and gear for beginners. You need boots, pants, a helmet, gloves and a number of other things. Check out our guide.

Some personal shit to be ranted about below. This is just me venting into the void.
So for those of you who don’t know, I was physically abused and psychologically tortured by my older half brother within my memory span from ages 3 to 16 (which was when he was kicked out of the house). This happened behind closed doors when we were supposed to be playing when dad (our shared parent) was off to work, and my mom was busy doing things around the house. He would vent his anger and frustrations out on me. He’d hit me in places that would be covered by my clothes until it bruised and I was crying, but I wouldn’t be allowed to make a noise. I quickly learned to adapt to pain and pretend everything was okay, otherwise, he’d kill everyone I loved before he would kill me. Now, he was only 2 years older than me, but as a child, I couldn’t rationalise that he couldn’t do that to my parents just yet. How could I? I was 3 when it started.
I hated summer time because it meant he’d be living with us instead of his mother.
When he turned 8, my parents gained full custody over him, and I cried myself to sleep every night, silently... but I had already been trained to not show it outside of my locked room at night, and I was only 6. A 6-year-old shouldn’t have to worry about their parents knowing they are in pain or scared for their own life. A 6-year-old should be playing, and be okay with telling their parents anything... but how could I? He’d kill everyone I loved before he’d finally kill me.
By no means were my parents perfect. They had their flaws. They could be emotionally and mentally abusive at times. It definitely got worse as I developed my own sense of self. Now I’m an adult, and I’m no longer their little girl... I’m a grown man, and they seem to hate that, but won’t say it anymore.
To them, family must always be forgiven, no matter how egregious the actions of a member... even if said actions were directed at another family member. You must do all you can to paint the picture of a happy family, despite how broken you are on the inside... despite how broken another family member made you.
I kept my mouth shut until November of 2015. I had just turned 21 the month prior to finally telling my parents why I hated my older half brother so much. It took me 5 years to summon the courage to say something about all the horrible things that had happened. To be brave enough to go against what I had been tortured into believing for so long... to know that he couldn’t kill everyone I loved before he’d finally kill me.
As I write this, I’m biting back tears. I shake with fear that somehow he’d know it was me writing this, that he’d make good on his promise, but I need this to be known... because after this horrible secret being spilled to my parents (and he most certainly knows because they confronted him)... not even 2 years after the truth being known, my dad invites him over to my younger brother’s graduation party, and he sneaks up behind me to say hello. I knew he was coming and was already orchestrating how to leave with Kara and Tyler before he showed up, but he was early. I fled to my room and locked the door. I was having an anxiety attack.
My other younger brother (have 3 of them), was the first to notice I wasn’t upstairs for the party. He was sent to ask me if the peach cobbler I was making was finished, or if the collard greens were done. I had finished both just as my abuser had surprised me. I regrettably snapped at Kevin (the one who noticed I wasn’t around) when he couldn’t hear me and knocked hard on my door and tried to open it and found it to be locked. I apologised later for that...
My mother was next. She called my phone to ask me where I was and if all the food was done. I told her I was in my room, trying not to panic (despite already panicking), and that my friend Tyler was on his was to pick me up and take me somewhere safe. She didn’t protest this, accepted it, but informed my dad... who was not okay with this.
My father came down and didn't’ say anything before trying to force my door open, causing me to panic more. How could I not know that it was my abuser? I cleared my throat to make myself sound okay and tentatively responded, asking who was there. Dad said it was him and demanded I open my door. I did as I was asked and he forced his way into my room... only to yell at and reprimand me for wanting to leave and for panicking. He berated me and tried to humiliate me for being scared. He tried to invalidate my gender identity, because years of torture left me frightened and crying... and real men wouldn’t let something like that get to them. Mind you, my father has been to war and also has PTSD. He can’t get in his vehicle without checking under it to make sure no bombs were planted there. Guess he’s not a real man either, based on his shitty definition of a real man -queue eye roll here-
After seeing that he “couldn’t get through to me” by yelling and humiliating me and making me panic more, after an awkward silence for a good 5 to 10 minutes, he quietly asked me what I would like him to do, I responded barely above a whisper, “I’d like for you to get out of my room please.” And this pissed him off further. He called me a selfish asshole and “That’s what you’re going to say to me?!” Then got up and slammed my bedroom door on his way out. I cried and waited for all to go quiet before I fled. My shoes had been hidden, but I found my flip flops, ignoring my strict rule of no socks and sandals, put those on, and proceeded to leave. My mom saw me head out and caught me just as I got to the sidewalk in front of our yard. She asked me where I was going, I told her I was going to the park and Tyler would be picking me up soon. She asked if I’d be home that night, and I said I wasn’t sure, but dad was pissed off and probably didn’t want me home anyways, and I definitely wouldn’t return until my abuser was gone. She let me go without further protest.
My calves burned as I rushed to the park, only to then decide to go further, walking all the way to the high school in my neighbourhood. The walk helped my nerves, but only enough to calm me from my anxiety attack. I was still a paranoid wreck, trying hard to not dissociate. Tyler texted that he was 5 minutes away. That was the longest 5 minutes of my life. I jumped at every sound that wasn’t a bird, kept scanning around and stayed hidden until Tyler’s car showed up. I was safe.
The car ride was mostly silence, with the dull hum of the radio. Tyler kept changing the station, but I mostly couldn’t pay attention to what was on. I could barely focus on his words whenever he spoke. I was safe, but I was still scared. There were several times where I wanted to grab his hand as an anchor, but he was driving, and I dunno if that’d be awkward or give the wrong idea, so I kept my hands to myself.
We made it to a mutual friend’s house, spent the evening with a handful of friends who were aware of the situation, they helped me calm down and get my mind off things. I tried hard to focus on what we were doing, my mind drifting every so often, but someone always managed to pull my attention back to reality and away from all the what ifs and paranoid thoughts of the future when I’d have to return home.
I then received a text towards the later hours of the evening that my abuser might be staying the night in my home. Cass, Adam, and Derek offered to let me stay at their house for the evening, and I definitely stayed. My abuser didn’t leave my house until almost 1 in the morning. Mom asked me if I was coming home, and I told her that everyone already left or went to bed, so I’d be back in the morning.
I did return the next morning, having barely slept and was plagued with night terrors, only to receive a cold shoulder from my dad... which I suppose was better than him deciding to yell at me more. I have been bouncing between apathetic and on the verge of tears since that happened... which was just this past Memorial Day weekend. Dad has barely spoken more than a couple sentences to me since it happened.
I’ve been depressed since then... nerves on edge because now my abuser knows exactly where to find me. I’m hoping to be gone to finish school by next spring, but that feels ages away and it makes me sick thinking about having to wait that long. I feel like I won’t be able to truly get better until I have my own place away from here, a place that my abuser has no knowledge of. Rent is too expensive in Colorado to find my own place now, especially since I’m trying to save my money to move up to Minnesota to finish school.
I have had the impulsive thought to shave my head, change my glasses, put a rush on my top surgery, pick a different name despite how much I love my name now, and move to a different state now... but I don’t have enough to do that. I like my hair and glass and name... I don’t even know where I’d go right now... so I’m stuck. I work 45~ hours a week as a baker, and I’m stuck right now. I’d pick up on commissions for extra cash, but I don’t even have enough of a following for anyone to care enough to pay me. I’m shit at advertising myself on social media. I’m barely capable of running an RP blog. I’m hardly active on Facebook. I go generally unnoticed. Sometimes I prefer to be that anonymous despite my wildly coloured hair and spunky personality (when I’m not feeling like utter shit)... I dunno... I’m working hard now, and I’ll get there. I gotta work on my portfolio to get into the school I’m planning on anyways. I may open up commissions when I’m feeling less frazzled and ready to bolt at the mildest sign of danger.
I’d like to thank my friends Kara, Tyler, Cass, Adam, Derek, and Nate (who was the only unmentioned friend in this, lmao, despite his humour helping me along too) for being there. I’d probably be in a lot worse of a state of mind if y’all didn’t kidnap me. I’d also like to thank my online friends Yuki, Psyco, and Inu for keeping me calm through that anxiety attack while I waited for Tyler to come get me.
I will be okay, I just need time to recover. It’s been one thing after another lately, but I feel like things will get better soon, at least for now.
He can’t kill everyone I love and then me, because he doesn’t live in this town, and my family now knows, and so do you, dear readers. I have survived this long, and will continue to do so for many years, because his threats were probably empty. I am stronger than my mental illness. I am stronger than the torture he put me through. I may hate him for all the horrible things he did to me and my family, he may terrify me still, but I am stronger than him.
I am stronger than him.

I Got Tagged - Mun Answers
Tagged by @drorah-walks Tagging: whoever feels comfortable answering these questions! :3
Are you named after anyone? I believe my middle name was given to me as a namesake for someone that my mother was really close to, her aunt, I believe. My first name, Amber, was given to me just because my mother liked it.
When was the last time you cried? I was tearing up over a roleplay response a few days ago.
Do you like handwriting? I journal with a real pen and a real journal but other than that, I don’t really do much handwriting at all. All of my work is on my computer.
What’s your favorite lunch meat? Turkey or ham.
Do you have kids? Lol. Me + Kids = Really Fucking Bad Idea.
If you were another person would you be friends with you? I'd like to think so. I’m not the most perfect person in the world but I do try to treat my friends well. I spend a lot of time worrying about them instead of myself. I just like to fuss over my friends, so yeah, if I was someone else, I’d probably want to be my friend.
Do you use sarcasm? My main muse on Tumblr is Loki... Sarcasm is a requirement...
Do you still have your tonsils? YEP! Though, sometimes I think it might have been easier to have them taken out as a kid when I get sick.
Do you bungee jump? Nope and considering I’m kind of afraid of heights, I probably wouldn’t be persuaded to do so. Maybe for money. Like... a lot of money.
What’s your favorite cereal? It’s a toss up between Reese’s Puff Cereal and Honey Nut Cheerios.
Do you untie your shoes when you take them off? Only if I have to. I live in a pretty warm climate, so I don’t normally wear shoes that require them to be tied. I go for flip flops, cute sandals, or flats most of the time. If I wear sneakers, I’ll leave them tied unless I can’t get the off.
Do you think you’re a strong person? Yes and no. I cry and get frustrated so easily but I’ve also accomplished a lot in my life that I can say would take strength. It’s a strange sort of in-between sensation, I guess?
What’s your favorite ice cream? Brownie or cake batter mixed with ice cream. I used to live by this ice cream parlor that would literally mix chocolate or vanilla ice cream together with their respective cake batters and it was the most amazing thing I’ve ever tasted.
What’s the first thing you notice about people? I hate myself for this, but I usually notice their noses first? Like, I don’t know why, but that’s a thing that always happens.
What’s the least favorite thing you like about yourself? Physically or emotionally or mentally? There are a lot of different things I’d like to change about myself like my weight, my tendency to lose interest in projects, or my tendency to avoid research even though I enjoy research and want to expand my knowledge. I also wish that when I’m in a bad mood, I’d handle it differently and I wish I was more of an extrovert.
What color pants and shoes are you wearing right now? I’m wearing grey pajama pants that say “LOKI” down one thigh in gold letters with his helmet at the top. I’m not wearing shoes or socks because I’m in my room.
What are you listening to right now? The traffic outside my house.
If you were a crayon what color would you be? Green, I think. Idk. This is a weird question... Green.
What’s your favorite smell? Mint, pumpkin, mocha coffee, coconut, vanilla.
Who’s the last person you talked to on the phone? My mom, I think?
Favorite sport to watch? I don’t really enjoy watching sports at all, to be honest, so none.
Hair color? Naturally, my hair is blonde, but I haven’t had natural hair since the 6th grade. Right now, my hair is black. Black has been my go-to color since 7th grade, but I’ve also dyed my hair red, brown, green, blue, purple, pink, and teal.
Eye color? Green
Do you wear contacts? I’ve tried wearing contacts and I really don’t like them, so I stick to glasses. I don’t need to wear them all the time, but I do have to wear them while doing computer work and driving at night. My night vision is terrible.
Favorite food to eat? SHRIMP. MAN, I LOVE SHRIMP.
Scary movies or comedy? Either’s all right with me, to be honest. Generally, I like comedy more than horror because I’m super fucking critical about horror movies. I’ll usually say a comedy was good quicker than I’ll say a horror movie was good, but I’ll watch both.
Last movie you watched? Ummmmm, I just saw Guardians of the Galaxy on Friday.
Color of shirt your wearing? Black and tan.
Summer or winter? Neither. I prefer the intermediate seasons.
Hugs or kisses? Hugs. I haven’t kissed someone in years and if someone kissed me, I’d probably kick them right in the genitals.
What book are you currently reading? A few different books on Norse Myths, actually. Research for a project I’m working on :D
Who do you miss right now? My cat, cause idk where she is but she’s usually curled up on my bed, sleeping next to me.
What’s on your mousepad? I just have a plain black one for the rare times where I actually need to use a mousepad. Most of the time, I just use my laptop without a mouse.
What’s the last TV show you watched? RuPaul’s Drag Race!
What’s the best sound? Cats purring hands down.
Rolling Stones or the Beetles? Rolling Stones, I guess, though I don’t really listen to either.
What’s the furthest you’ve ever traveled? From Ohio to LA, probably. I’ve only ever been out of the country a handful of times and that was always to go up to Canada. I’d love to do more traveling...
Do you have a special talent? ...Writing?
Where were you born? I was born in Ohio, but I’d rather not give out specifics on an exact location.

10 Trendy Beach Accessories for Women
How does the thought of going to the beach in style sound? It is an amazing experience that any beach lover would want to have. The best thing about being trendy and stylish at the beach is that you don’t have to spend a lot of money. All you need to do is find the right accessories to take with you at the beach and you’ll be good to go. Some accessories will go for less than $10, but they’ll make you stand out and look cool as you enjoy your time at the beach.
At NicheForBeach, we are crazy about beach accessories for women. We have lots of accessories for women that love to go to the beach. But we also love sharing some quality information. If you are planning to go to the beach and you want to stay trendy and cool as ever, here are some accessories you should consider carrying.
A Hat
Anyone that thinks of going to the beach without a hat is like a soldier going to the battlefield without a bulletproof vest. When you go without the hat, you are vulnerable, and Mr. Summer Sun will show you no mercy.
You have to have the proper hat that will keep your face well protected against the harsh sun. Ideally, go for a straw hat that will not keep your head hot as you wear it. A straw hat is breathable enough, and it also blocks the sun perfectly.
Even in ancient times, the straw hats were used to cool off. These hats will still keep you cool as they block the sun rays from damaging your face. As a woman, nothing beats stylishness than having an oversized floppy hat. With such a hat, you can enjoy the most sun protection, which covers your face fully from the UV rays. But you can still go for a non-floppy hat, as long as it still offers the needed protection to your face.
There are also other types like the Panama hats and the fedoras, which still keep you cool while protecting you from the sun. But if you plan to play some volleyball at the beach or run around, go for a hat that will stay on your head while offering the needed sun protection.
Beach Bags
Another type of women beach accessories is a beach bag. The beach bag will serve many purposes. However, the most obvious reason would be to carry items when going to the beach. With the beach bag, you can comfortably carry whatever you want without ruining your style.
Since you want to look stylish and cool at the beach, ensure that you choose a beach bag that looks classy enough. It should be big enough to carry all the items you will be taking to the beach and even have extra pockets for storing the valuables.
If you are going for a flashy beach bag, ensure that it also matches your bikini so that you don’t kill the look. The dull colors might not stand out as such. However, a beach bag with dull-colored clothes would still look cool as you enjoy time at the beach.
For a good beach bag, ensure that you go for one with multiple pockets. This way, you can keep various accessories at once while sorting them. Some bags come with small inner pockets and even key hooks for keeping your keys and storing your small valuables.
Don’t forget to go for one with a strong material that is both sand and waterproof.
Sunglasses
Who would want to go out in the sunny summer afternoon without a good pair of sunglasses? Not everyone would be comfortable without some eyes protection. Now, the worst thing you’d want to do is go to the beach without any protection for your eyes. The sand and the water will reflect the sunrays, which can cause some serious damage to your eyes. That is why you need some protection as you go to the beach.
A good pair of sunglasses will let you enjoy the seashore view the beach without worrying about your eyes. Since summer is just around the corner, it’d be great to get yourself some pair of colorful sunglasses. You can go for the bright colors and patterns that will leave you looking stylish enough.
If you want, you can go for the classic sunglasses or oversized sunglasses. Regardless of the brand, you intend to choose, just make sure that you find yourself the perfect set of eye protection while at the beach. It wouldn’t be a bad idea to match your sunglasses with the color of your bikini or beach bag.
Beach Shoes/Flip-Flops/Sandals
You won’t be rocking your stilettos at the beach, would you? Certainly not. Instead, you will need to wear the right shoes for the beach. You need a pair of shoes that will not sink in the sand or soak up water at the beach.
When choosing the right shoes for beaching, it is all about considering what you will be doing at the beach. Will you be basking in the sun, walking on the shore, or playing beach ball? If you will be moving around or you’ll be excessively active at the beach, you will want to go for a pair of shoes that will stick to your feet tightly. Flip flops won’t be the best choice if you will be playing or be active at the beach.
But if you plan just to lay back and enjoy the sun at the beach, wearing some sandals or flip-flops wouldn’t be a bad idea. This also lets you jump in the water anytime and put them back with ease. For the flip-flops, you can go for the sustainable bamboo that has vegetable-tanned leather. These flip-flops won’t soak up water, and they also tend to be sand resistant. Sand will not accumulate in the flip-flops as you walk on the shore.
Whether you will go for a colorful pair of shoes or plain design, make sure that you pick the right shoes for the beach.
Cover-ups
As the name suggests, these are just attire to cover your bikini when you don’t want to show some flesh. For instance, you can get a maxi dress that you can easily wear on top of your bikini when you want to rush to town or when you plan to go back to the beach later in the day. The cover-ups should be easy to wear and take off so that you don’t have a difficult time. Plus, you can go for a dress that is colorful enough to let you maintain your stylishness.
If you are going for a crochet cover-up, ensure that you wear enough sunscreen and that you don’t wear it for a long time. You can also opt for a sundress as a cover-up option. I recommend the beach Kimono!
Generally, cover-ups are not exactly needed at the beach, but they help you get ready to rush to the city or the shop and back without the need for changing.
A Lunch Box
Well, you will be spending some time at the beach, right? How do you plan to handle your meals? Will you buy food at the restaurant near the beach? Maybe not, because that would be costly – especially if you will be going to the beach every day.
Now, the best way to enjoy a day at the beach, be sure of having something to eat without spending a lot is to have a lunch box. With the lunch box, you can easily carry food from home and have your meals at the beach. The best part is that a good beach bag will have pockets that allow you to keep different beach accessories, including a lunch box.
When choosing a lunch box, go for one that can keep your food cold and fresh in the hot weather. If you want to eat something warm, you’ll have to go for one that can keep the food warm. A good lunch box will come with reusable cutleries to give you an easy time. Ideally, choose a lunch box with plastic cutleries. These cutleries are easy to keep and clean. You can wipe them with some napkins and store them in the bag to avoid them leaving the smell inside. Just make sure that you clean them properly when you reach home.
The lunch box that you choose can also be colorful or as you wish. Remember to pick a size that meets your needs appropriately.
Waterproof Speaker
Well, this is not a must-have beach accessory for women, but it is one that can make you look cool at the beach. If you are with your friends at the beach, you may not even need this accessory. This is a perfect choice if you will be alone at the beach and you are just there to relax. The waterproof speaker will keep you entertained as you relax at the beach.
Make sure that it is waterproof enough to avoid any inconveniences. The volume level of the speaker should be loud enough so that you can listen to your music even when there is some noise at the beach. Other than being waterproof, the speaker should also be sand proof. It should be designed in a way that it can prevent the sand particles from getting inside it. Above all, it should be easy to control. If you want, you can choose a speaker that has some shades of bright colors.
Ideally, go for a speaker that has Bluetooth connectivity to let you play your favorite jams from your phone with ease.
Portable Beach Table
Where do you plan to keep your lunchbox, phone, waterproof speaker, or other items while at the beach? On the sand? Not the best idea. Instead, you should go for a portable beach table that will let you set the small items as you have a good time at the beach. The portable wooden table would make you look stylish enough. It will prove that you were 100% prepared for the beach.
When going for a beach table, ensure that it is easily foldable for easy storage. Furthermore, go for one with features like a cup holder or a bottle opener. The beach table can also hold your laptop if you need to carry it.
Colorful Towel
Okay, this might sound like an obvious thing to carry to the beach, but it is important to have it in your top beach accessories. But you won’t be getting just your regular towel. Rather, you must go for a towel that is as colorful as possible. Plus, the towel should have some stunning patterns to make it stand out of other towels out there. You must ensure that the towel is not plain if you truly want to look stylish. Regardless of the pattern or color theme you choose, ensure that you find the right towel for going to the beach.
Beach Mat
If you want to bask in the sun and you don’t prefer going to the beach table, you can get a beach mat to solve all that. The beach mat that you choose must be sand proof and also waterproof. It should be made of high-quality material to enhance its durability. Plus, ensure that you go for one that is colorful enough. It should be large enough to let you place your sleep comfortably and even place your bag without having any problem. A waterproof mat will allow you to place it anywhere at the beach even on the wet sand. It will prevent water from soaking up and getting to your towel.
The mat should also not absorb sand because that would mean that you will carry sand particles to your car.
You can even go with some bracelet or chain if you want to show off some shiny accessories on you. All in all, carry whatever that will make your time at the beach incredible.

Interview with LADY ECHO
“Born in South Miami during the mid-1980’s, Emerald (also known as Echo or Lady Echo) grew up as the youngest and only daughter in a family of three boys. As a young girl, her favorite activity was riding on the back pegs of her oldest brother’s bike while being taught how to read the signatures of Graffiti artists from around their neighborhood. By 1994, Emerald had a “tag” and was learning how to use spray paint. In 1999, she began pursuing Graffiti and Art as a passion. She attended a pre-college program at Pratt Institute in New York City (just before 9/11) during the summer of 2001, receiving only a month of formal training in painting, drawing and art history. She has continued painting ever since. Many of Emerald’s works can be found interacting in public spaces throughout the United States and Europe, or rolling along freight lines from the United States to Mexico and Canada.” (Emeraldartstudio.com)
Tumblr media
So since your last interview in 2008, how has life been?
Life has been real! Lots of ups and downs in the past eight years. My best friend OiL died the year following that interview... I went into a bad depression. Poke BS, the only person in NYC who looked out for me at that time, died 8 months later. My older brother died a year and half after that.
In a span of 2 years, my protectors, the men who (although would give me so much shit in between us) wouldn’t let anyone fuck with me, were taken before I could realize how valuable they were. I spent the next several years in a bad place. It took a lot to figure out how to be happy again. I’m still kinda traumatized, I panic that the people I care about are going to die all the time. I panic that I’m going to die all the time – which is why I am constantly producing as much as I can. I don’t really party anymore, I don’t drink anymore, I don’t socialize very often, I stay in and I work on my legacy. I feel immense pressure to create while I still can. I feel immense pressure to leave things on good terms with people I care about as much as I can. I know how fragile life is, I’ve learned that even the strongest bonds are temporary, and I no longer take it for granted.
Also, since my last interview, Nekst - arguably one of the strongest American bombers in our current generation of Graffiti, passed away. Iz the Wiz passed away. Sace passed away. Countless other Graffiti writers have also died. Does this mean we, as Graffiti writers, are a culture of troubled people who will die young in higher percentages? I’m not sure but I’m well aware of the possibility.
Aside from that - technology has changed at a super rapid rate in the past 8 years. Smart phones became a thing, pay phones went extinct, social media emerged, instagram replaced Flickr (for me), information is being shared and spread at rates faster than ever before in our civilization, food (and nearly anything) can now be ordered through an app on your phone. It’s an interesting time to be alive!
Tumblr media
 When did you start writing?
I learned about Graffiti as an 8 year-old in the early 90’s - and even had a tag, E.C.K.,  but didn’t actually start seriously writing until 1999.
How many trains do you think you’ve painted since you started?
I honestly have no idea how many.. It’s gotta be in the hundreds, maybe even a thousand or more? It takes a lot of cars before you actually make a dent. I hope one day my panels get a catalogue raisonne like fancy artists do with their art works.
Tumblr media
What was your first train painting experience like?
Clumsy and inexperienced! Growing up in Miami, I spent most of my life in sandals. My dumb ass walked into the freight  yard with flip-flops and busted my big toe on a pile of rocks within 45 seconds of being in there.. My foot bled the entire time I painted, but I finished my piece - on a Chessie System coal car. I still have a scar from that day.
Some writers love painting trains more than walls. What about you?
I prefer trains. I love smooth metal on clean trains but also love working on the rough, rusted surfaces of freights. Trains come more naturally to me than a clean wall. A panel that will end up moving with a train is more forgiving and less intimidating for me than a flat wall that will blatantly showcase any mistakes I make.
Tumblr media
As an artist, what’s your favorite medium to use other than spray paint?
Stainless steel. I love welding and if you weld it properly, stainless steel will produce a rainbow of colors from the oxidation of the metal.
I also like epoxy resin, it allows me to make sculptures out of objects like used spray cans.
What was the most thrilling experience you’ve ever had while you were out painting?
Hmmm. Graffiti is always kind of a thrill for me, regardless of how big, little or insignificant what I’m doing is.. There are different kinds of thrills for me with painting - some are fun, but some are hectic. Seeing my work running years later is a thrill for me. Discovering new mediums and new instruments is a thrill. Recently doing fire extinguisher tags thrilled the shit out of me - like, had me smiling all night and doing a little back-it-up dance kinda thrill.
Guess the most direct answer: I haven’t had a most thrilling experience yet, cuz I never know what to expect, the thrills just keep coming :)
Tumblr media
What type of music do you enjoy listening to while you’re painting a canvas or any type of work outside of the streets?
I listen to music literally all day (if I’m not listening to the news), it helps me work and it just feels necessary. I’m probably more into music than I am into art - even though I’ve never made music or ever had an interest in trying.
I listen to all kinds of music: Rap, Hiphop, Soul, R&B, Folk, Metal, Alternative, Jazz, Pop, Electronic, etc, etc, etc. Obscure stuff as well as super mainstream. Just depends on my mood or the feeling I need or want at the time. Music gives me a physical reaction, so certain songs feel better than others and sometimes I overdo songs that make me feel really good - to the point they no longer feel good and I can’t stand to hear them ever again.
My favorite song, since 1992, is “Minds is Playing Tricks on Me” by Gheto Boys - The melody really spoke to me as a kid and it can still give me chills if the mood is right. Since then, my other favorite is “In a Sentimental Mood” by John Coltrane.
My favorite albums of all time are “Live and Dangerous” by Thin Lizzy, “Ready to Die” by Notorious BIG, “Table Scraps” by MHZ (Megahertz), “Give Up” by The Postal Service.
I was going to start listing artists that I like but it would take forever. Instead, if people are interested in my music taste, they can check out the playlists on my youtube channel: youtube.com/c/emeraldartstudio. So far I’ve made 3 lists: Dance party station, Rap station and Soul station. I listen to these playlists all the time and I add to them whenever I have a free moment.
What’s your favorite aspect of Graffiti? Is it piecing, hand-styles, throw-ups, or everything?
My favorite aspect of Graffiti is that one can never run out of surfaces on which to get up or instruments to do it with. I love tagging, I love throwups and I enjoy piecing too. It’s all fun to me, but some endeavors require more work than others. Tags and throwups are quick but require more strategy than a piece sometimes, even though a piece can be grueling effort-wise.
I prefer to paint super readable spots that will be seen in motion, whether the surface is moving (train, truck etc.) or the viewers are moving (trainline spot, highway spot, etc).
Tumblr media
What’s you biggest motivator/ inspiration that drives you everyday to be creative?  That skirt you made the line of drips on was rad as hell.
My biggest motivator is death. Like I mentioned before, since so many people close to me have died unexpectedly, I have a panic inside of me that I’m gonna die very soon. I’m extremely concerned with my legacy and I think the work I leave behind is what matters.
As for inspiration - I’m just a creative person. My mind searches for that “new new” all the time. I like to experiment and try stuff that I’ve never seen, I like to put new spins on traditional things. Monotony exasperates me, I can’t even walk down my own street the same way more than a few times. I’m constantly exploring. I like to go where I’ve never been. I like to have fun and be silly, even if I’m alone, there’s never a boring day.
Glad you like the skirt with ink drips! It was a spin on an idea I had for photoshoot with black drips on skin, combined with my obsession for edding ink + the recurring theme of edding ink in my artwork. I wanted something funky to wear out that night and nothing in my closet was cool enough so somehow I had the idea of dripping black ink on my white skirt and took the risk. The dried ink was smudging at first so I sprayed it with rusto clear coat to seal it. The ink stained the vegan leather of the skirt, but the sexy surface black ended up cracking off by the end of the night. It was a one-time item, but very fun to rock!
What’s the coolest place you’ve ever had the opportunity to paint in? (State, country, abandon spots wise.)
Hmmm… I think one of the coolest places to paint that I’ve come across is an abandoned factory in New Jersey - I have bad memory for some details so I can’t remember who took me to find it (maybe Tacoe). The factory had several floors, lots of walls, and old locker rooms for the workers, with a lot of stuff still in the lockers (including old porn magazines which I know I have photos of somewhere). For a while after we found it, I was the only person painting there along with whoever I selected from NYC to join me. I think I had like 5-6 pieces in there in the course of a few months. It was super cool to have an entire building painted with Graffiti that I basically got to curate.
Aside from that, I’ve had the opportunity to paint a freight spot that’s near the ocean. I’m a big fan of ocean, and a big fan of freights, so getting to combine the two is almost surreal. Imagine finishing an end to end, high as hell on paint fumes, looking up at the bright moon and stars, hearing ocean waves crashing as the moonlight melts onto your piece. It’s like a dream.
Tumblr media
What’s the creepiest thing you’ve ever experienced in an abandoned spot?
Never really had too many creepy things happen while painting, but the creepiest thing that’s ever happened in my life was on a “work” road trip with detour to the Grand Canyon. I was travelling with a friend, we were staying close to the monument the night before and had planned to visit  in the morning. We requested a room with two beds, but when we got to the room there was only one bed.. We soon discovered there was a door in the room which led to another room which had its own bed and bathroom. We assumed they either gave us the suite on purpose without saying so or that it was an accident, but we decided to use the second room either way.
I locked the manual door latch (which prevents the door from being opened even if someone has a key) and proceeded to wash my face and get ready for bed. B was in the room next to me and spoke to me thru the connecting door, told me he had to grab his shorts from the car so he could shower and would be right back. I was in the bathroom and heard a door slam closed.
When I finished I walked out, I heard B’s shower going next door but noticed the door latch on my door (in the second kinda sketch room) was open - which I thought was weird cuz B could have walked out of his own room - especially since we didn’t even know if we should be in the second room and he saw me make a point to latch the door when we first walked in.
I relatched the door and waited in B’s room watching tv. When B got out of the shower, I asked him if we could use his door only to go in and out of the room so that the door of the second room I was in would stay locked. I explained that when I got out of the bathroom my door latch was open and I was concerned someone could just walk in if they had the key.
“Emerald, but I didn’t go out of the door of that room. I went out of this door. Yours should have stayed locked, I didn’t unlock it.”
I looked at him in shock. “Are you fucking with me right now?”
“No, I swear.”
We both walked back into the second room and the door latch (which I had JUST reclosed) was open again. This time there was no possible way that B had opened it. We closed it again and watched to see if it was faulty and might open on its own. It didn’t. I got chills up my arms and tears started streaming down my face. B was in shock too, he didn’t know how to handle me crying but I could tell he believed I wasn’t fucking with the door latch either.
I ended up grabbing all my shit out of the second room and slept in the same bed as my homie that night. We both agreed it was probably a ghost and that the motel we were staying at had probably been built on some ancient Native American burial ground or something. I still get tears when I think of it. Creepiest shit ever.
This is probably a difficult question to ask, but what’s the most monumental piece you’ve ever done?
Hmmmm… I hope I haven’t done it yet! I hope I still outdo everything I’ve ever done. I don’t want to be stagnant. I don’t want my highest achievement to be in the past, I want it to happen as often as possible.
Tumblr media
Most people probably wouldn’t know you have a dog unless they follow you on Instagram or actually know you. (Who, by the way is very cute.) What made you decide to get a dog and how has she changed your life
I’ve wanted a dog for a while and circumstances finally aligned for it to happen.
Also, after so many super disappointing experiences with disloyal people, I figured adopting a dog would be a safer bet than trying to connect with another person who betrays me. I rescued a pitbull mix and she’s changed my life in a lot of ways - it’s like having a kid, I take care of her before I take care of myself. She’s so smart and makes me laugh all the time with the things she does. She’s really strong and fast, but is the sweetest little thing ever + possibly a winner for the world’s best snuggler award.
I can’t imagine living without her but have already prepared myself for the fact that dogs have 13-15 yr lifespans. I get mixed emotions sometimes when I watch her sleep - relief and shock that they almost killed her at a shelter and then kinda sad knowing I’m probably gonna outlive her and that there will be no other creature just like her. Aside from that and all the work involved, having a dog is the coolest thing ever!
What do your parents know about your Graffiti lifestyle?
My dad died when I was a kid, so I was raised by my mom and brothers. Yes, they know about it - in general, not necessarily all the details of what the lifestyle involves but they know I’m a writer.
When I was a kid, in the early 90s, my oldest brother wrote Graffiti and my mom was cool with it. She was cool with all his Graffiti friends hanging at our house, she even had her own tag, “Mom1” and would ask them to put her up + she would get excited when she saw them up on the highways or tags on toll booths etc.
When was 15 and started writing, and my mom found flicks, I got in so much trouble! It was OK for her son, but not for her daughter. I had to change my tag so my mom didn’t know what I wrote and I didn’t take photos of my Graffiti for the rest of the time I lived at home. During that time she found out (through one of my oldest brother’s friends) that I changed my tag to Echo but since she never caught me with photos, she could never prove any of the stuff she saw was done by me.
I moved out of her house before I graduated high school and after that she couldn’t tell me what to do so eventually I decided to be super open with her about what I was doing. In her attempts to finally have a close relationship with me, she was all of a sudden cool with it.
I remember when I lived in New Jersey at one point, she said she wanted to visit and do what I do - so I asked her if she was down to do backjumps on some subway trains and she said yes! I refused to take her but she insisted she wanted to spray. She’s never actually painted with me or really even made efforts to follow my work, but I have sent her flicks before and she has told me that she looks for “Echo” or “OiL” whenever she sees a train passing. She met OiL a few times and tells me that she remembers him fondly.
My oldest brother, who put me onto Graffiti to begin with, has reprimanded me a few times for writing on shit. Even so, I think he digs that I’ve gone so far with it and I think he respects my choices. I know he’s proud of me even if he doesn’t really think Graffiti is smart for me to do.
My older brother who passed way (I have three older brothers btw), never really liked it. He didn’t like that I would be out late at night with guys, didn’t like that I was going into train yards (with guys) and didn’t trust any of my guys friends - he was convinced my friends were going to sexually assault me or had already been trying to rape me in my sleep when I was on Graffiti roadtrips, etc.. On the other hand, he was also so amazed that I could get away with so much - like, statistically, he couldn’t believe how many times I had painted illegally and not gotten in trouble. I remember one night after telling him about a super-close call while painting in NYC, he was super stoned, got some sort of epiphany from my story, and explained to me, “The key to getting away with anything... is a girl.... All you need is a girl and you can get away with anything.”

What spots have you hit that you may have risked your life painting?
Ugh - recently did some seriously sketchy shit about 23 feet high on a ladder. The person I was painting with, who had just caught a fire extinguisher tag on the rooftop of a building - with security guard not far from us on the ground level - insisted that he could not bring the extinguisher down with him and that I needed to climb up and get it.
The logic of why he wouldn’t be able to climb down with the extinguisher and why I was able to do it made no sense to me -  but I needed him to shut up and get down, so I climbed up to get it.
The extension ladder was lifted to the max and still had a grip of space before the roof so he had to hand the extinguisher down to me from several feet above, and there was no chance of placing it into my hand - he was gonna have to drop it down (even tho there’s no logical or realistic way I could have grabbed it from the bottom). (As I’m typing this, I still don’t know how I agreed to do this). With one hand holding the ladder, I reached up above my head to have him drop a huge (way bigger than normal size) fire extinguisher into my small lady hand. I obviously couldn’t hold it and somehow (without falling off the ladder) repositioned the fire extinguisher mid-air, slid the bottom between my chest and the ladder and hugged it with my free arm and began to climb down. The entire time I was climbing down he kept going on: “Holy shit, you’re such a fucking gangster… You’re a fucking G.” I was shaking and my heart was racing from the adrenaline but I made it down safely and we didn’t get caught by the security guard. Definitely never doing that ever again.
New rule: You climb up with it, you climb down with it. Fuck that.

My final question… Are you a pizza or pasta gal?
Is both an option? I eat pizza and pasta more than once a week. If it’s a nice Italian restaurant I’m getting some form of pasta, but if it’s not boushie spot then I’ll go for the greasy pizza. Favorites: Joe’s Pizza on Carmine in Manhattan, Garage Pizza on Sunset in LA (yes, there’s decent pizza in LA!) and La Pizza on la Croisette in Cannes.
Thank you for all of your time Echo!
Thanks for the interview! Super cool to follow-up with the same website 8 years later. I don’t do many interviews so these will be valuable one day :)
