Quarantine, Day 142-143
July 31-Aug 1
I didn't write anything yesterday because I was tired and today I am even more tired, so I may just do a quick thing here and backfill in coming days. It is a little strange and possibly even disingenuous to write a quarantine journal for a day when you hosted an actual party, but since my sister's wedding is perhaps the clearest example of how profoundly the novel coronavirus has changed the way we live, I'mma do it anyway.
Yesterday was full-bore no holds barred wedding prep day. I sobered up enough on Thursday night to drink a ton of water before bed, so between that and my CPAP I managed to avoid a hangover. This was excellent because we were busy all day long. All the furniture arrived for the ceremony and the meal, which mostly consisted of rental chairs and folding tables we borrowed from everybody we knew. I am pretty sure we borrowed some tables from people who weren't even invited to the wedding, which would be a faux pas in normal times but right now everybody understood. I spent a good chunk of the day out running errands, picking up all the stuff we hadn't gotten before and I didn't want my mom or dad shopping for. I ended up going to Starbucks, Farm and Fleet (regional hardware store chain), Walmart and Walgreens all in a row and having to go inside everywhere except Starbucks. The Walmart was busy enough on a Friday that I actually had to wait in line outside for just a little bit before I could go in.
Tumblr media
We did not have a rehearsal or rehearsal dinner for the wedding because we didn't want to have any more people traveling overnight than necessary. We did stage the wedding area and painted spray paint Xs wher everyone was supposed to stand, after mapping it out using whoever was nearby. I believe the bridesmaids at one point included my aunt, my husband, the kiddo, my six year old nephew, my mother, me and my sister.
Tumblr media
(Yes, there were seven bridesmaids and seven groomsmen, and since the bride and groom did not want to demote any attendants for the minimony, the bridal party itself made up more than 50% of the attendees if you include the officiant, the usher, the ringbearer and the flower girls.) The attendants only stood for about five minutes anyway; as soon as the giving away of the bride occurred we all went back to our carefully spaced seats.
This morning was for decorating all over the structure we put together last night. Signs for every chair and table (there was a seating chart for the ceremony and the meal), decorations for every table, flowers for the arch, photos of older family weddings, and of course coolers full of drinks and bowls and platters full of prepackaged food. No buffet of catered food or picnic of potluck delicacies in these unprecedented times, but we did have a zillion fruit rollups and hundreds of mini bags of chips. We also didn't have cups for the drinks, so everybody drank from the cans or bottles all day. Two of my aunts and my mom's best friend came over first thing and spent hours putting everything together.
My first morning task was to clean and disinfect the bathrooms, both the main bathroom and the emergency overflow (so to speak) bathroom. Back in the dark ages when I was in college, I worked for a summer cleaning office bathrooms for Servicemaster, so this is something I know how to do well. We had paper guest towels and many soaps and disinfectant wipes standing next to the sink in each bathroom. After bathroom cleaning, I ironed and folded the pocket square for my pending brother in law's suitcoat, and then it was my turn for beauty! The hairdresser I visited earlier in the week came to our house and did hair and makeup for my sisters, my mother, the mother of the groom and I, and he made us look amazing. My hair was curly and my eyes defined, it was very glamorous. I put on my dress and my shoes and borrowed some jewelry from my mom (I always forget to pack something on these trips!) and I was ready.  I waited until much later in the morning to get the kiddo ready. As the usher, his main job was to escort my mom to her seat and roll out the aisle runner. He got a very cute little monogrammed button down shirt, a bowtie, suspenders, and khaki shorts I managed to score on clearance at Walmart on Friday. I brought two pair of khaki shorts with us, but one had ragged hems from excessive play and one would no longer button. The new shorts worked fine though, and he looked great! Trying to get people to wear masks inside the house was kind of a losing endeavor, but we did our best to lead by example. My mask wound up wearing a fair amount of foundation and lipstick by the end of the day.
Tumblr media
Because this was the minimony and not the real main event wedding, my youngest sister altered my middle sister's wedding dress for today rather than wear her own wedding dress. It didn't take much, mostly just pretty lacy shoulder straps to keep everything in place, and the good news was that we already knew how to bustle it. She looked amazing! We helped her get ready and then went outside to line up, and the whole ceremony got going nearly on time. It was a little weird because half the audience seats were empty when the bridal party wasn't seated, and because the audience was so small to start with. This wedding was supposed to be in a performance hall at the University of Illinois with 350 guests and live musicians, but instead it was forty people total, in a backyard with my uncle who is in a band playing iPhone DJ.
I think that dichotomy had a lot to do with the mood of the day. Don't get me wrong, it was a good day! The wedding went off just like it was supposed to, there were kisses and cheers, the food was good and nothing disastrous happened. People had fun, like a little backyard picnic where two people got married. But the whole day was full of the ghosts of what wasn't happening. There were people who should have been there but weren't. Longtime family friends, older and much-loved relatives, friends from school and church and work who were pared from the list out of necessity. Pretty much everyone who wasn't an attendant was a first-degree relation of somebody in the party. There was no receiving line, and very few hugs or kisses. There was no wedding cake or wedding-cake-feeding, just cupcakes. There was no dancing, so no first dances, father daughter dance, any of that stuff. My sister has been planning her father-daughter dance probably since she watched my dad and I dancing at my wedding sixteen years ago, and it did not happen today. It will happen next year at the maximony, but it's still a lost moment. In a lot of ways, it didn't feel nearly as much like a wedding as I'd thought it would. But it was still nice.
Later on, once the new in-laws had left and the newlyweds taken off for their hotel, a handful of my parents' close friends came over. These were people who would've been at the center of the wedding planning and prep in normal times, part of the tight-knit group of multi-decade friendships that are the good part of living in a small town. They sat out on the patio around the fire table and drank wine and socialized until after us younger folks gave up and went to lay down. I sat with them for a little while before helping to drag inside the stuff that could be ruined by dew, then sitting down to write this slightly delayed journal. More later, but I'm tired now.

~RPF ~Warnings - None ~ Jensen, Jared, Lexi(OFC), Alan Ackles ~Jared x Lexi(Eventually) ~Word Count 3,327
Alexia stared out of the window of the beige luxury car, her head leaning against the door. She ignored the sounds of honking car horns in the hot Texas heat of late July. Her earphones blared classic rock and 90’s punk music as she sat there in her grunge tank top, ripped jeans, dark eye makeup and raven hair, pulled back into a messy bun.
“This isn’t a punishment, Lexi.” Her father, Alan, spoke as she rolled her eyes for the hundredth time that afternoon.
“Oh, come on!” She gawked at him. “Does this really require shipping me across the country?”
“Alexia Ann Ackles, I am not shipping you anywhere.” He stated in a stern tone. “Brookston is a very prestigious preparatory academy. You will be challenged there. You won’t get bored nearly as easily. This will be good for you.”
“Did, did you hear yourself just there?” Lexi spoke pointing a finger “Prep school. Do I look like the prep school type?” She went on gesturing to her appearance with red and black manicured fingernails. “You know maybe this is a mistake. I’ve been known to be irrational at times.”
“Lexi, just try it for a semester or two, then we’ll see what happens.” He went on sliding easily through the afternoon traffic.
“At least its with Jay.” She mumbled with a shoulder shrug.
“That’s a positive right there.” He waved his hand again. “All that quality time with him. I know how much you miss him when he is in Vancouver.” Placing his hand back on the steering wheel he exhaled.
Today, fifteen year old Alexia Ann Ackles, Lexi as she preferred, a nickname given to her by her big brother, Jensen, was making the move from Dallas Texas to Vancouver Canada to live with her big brother. The already high school senior was in advanced level classes and nearly three years ahead of her peers. Her parents, Alan and Donna, felt  that she needed a challenge. Over the past year Lexi had gotten into minor trouble and, as Donna put it “got mixed in with the wrong crowd.” Her parents felt that she needed a change, something different.
Due to encouragement a few months prior, Lexi applied to a very prestigious prep school in Vancouver. Brookston Academy was known as one of the toughest schools to get into in Vancouver. When Lexi got her acceptance letter Alan and Donna were filled with such pride.
“I don’t get it.” Alan chided. “A month ago you were over the moon with excitement about getting accepted. What changed?”
Lexi exhaled loudly. “It’s not that I DON’T want to go, it’s just-”
“You’re scared.” Alan interrupted with a knowing expression. “I get that, honey. You have barely ever left Texas. It’s normal. But this is a good idea. It will broaden your horizons and give you life experience that kids your age don’t get.”
“I know, dad. It’s the across the continent thing that freaks me out just a bit.” Her gaze cast down to her feet once more.
“Kiddo, what does your gut tell you?” He asked with a side glance.
“That I would be stupid not to do this.”
“Well, there you go.” He commented knowingly. “What do I always tell you, your brothers and your sister?”
“If you don’t try then you can’t complain.”
“Exactly!”
Lexi shook her head and couldn’t help but laugh at her father. She knew everything he did was out of love and came from a loving, caring place.
Pulling into the airport he looked to her. “Do you want me to walk in with you, kid?”
“Dad, I got this.”
“Come here.” Pulling her into a hug he squeezed her tightly. “Jensen will be there to pick you up when you land. Be sure to text us both when you land.”
“I know, I know.” She gave an eye roll and then a smile. “I love you, dad.”
“I love you too, kiddo.”
Waiting two hours, going through airport security and all the headache that was required to board, Lexi finally sat down in her seat. Letting her head fall back against the seat she closed her eyes taking a much needed deep breath she felt the vibrations of her phone in her pocket.
>>Dork 7:02am You should probably be boarding about now.
<<Punk 7:02am How do you do that?!
>>Dork 7:03am I’m magic
<<Punk 7:03am Oh really? Then turn my 6hr flight into a 30min one.
>>Dork 7:03am Not that good, Punk.
<<Punk 7:04am Love ya, you Dork!
>>Dork 7:04am Love you too Punk.
Lexi smiled, turning off her phone. Jensen and Lexi were thick as thieves despite their twenty one year age difference. Nearly five years ago while Jensen was working in Los Angeles, he was plagued by a deviant that kept trespassing in his backyard and going through his garbage. That deviant turned out to be an eleven year old Lexi. She was living in and out of foster homes due to parents who would rather get high than be actual parents and take care of her.
After months of short  run ins  between Jensen and Lexi, Jensen decided to take her under his wind and watch out for her. As time passed she melted his and his parents' hearts with her personality. Lexi managed to fit in with them so well. He parents overdosed and passed away a short time later and that’s when Jensen talked to his parents about the idea of Lexi becoming an Ackles officially. He originally wanted to be the one to adopt her but his age and her age would have made that tricky. Alan stepped in and Jensen became big brother. A fatherly big brother but big brother nonetheless.
Fast forward five years and now you have a bright, well brought up young woman that was making a giant leap to further her future. A future that was non existent five years ago. Pulling out her journal she slipped on her headphones and settled in for the flight.
Six hours and fifty two minutes later , the plane landed with a rough jerk in Vancouver. Gathering her things, Lexi filed in line to exit the plane. Powering up her phone she was greeted with a message.
>>Dork 1:26pm Hey Punk I hate to do this to you but I got called back on set. Jare is gonna pick you up. Be nice. Don’t hurt him.
Lexi smiled at her brother’s message turning to the baggage claim, she heard a familiar voice. “Excuse me miss but you look lost.” Lexi turned to see Jared standing behind her, a small bouquet of  white roses in hand. He stood in his tall glory, a white beanie atop his head, a hoodie and dark jeans.
“Hey, Skyscraper!” She exclaimed reaching on her tiptoes to hug him. “My God, did you get taller?”
Jared swooped her up in a bear huge and gave her a quick spin before setting her back to the ground. “Well, hello to you, yoo beautiful. These are for you.”
“My favorite!” She exclaimed, burying her nose into the flowers. “Thank you, Jare!”
“What’s it been, like two months?” He asked looking her over.
“About, but it doesn’t feel that long.”
“That’s because you are always at my house.” He jested. “I swear you are one of the few people Gen trust the kids with.”
Lexi grabbed her bag with excitement. ‘Oh, speaking of!” She said handing Jared a folded up piece of paper. “Your little artist have been channeling Picasso lately.”
Jared with a smile of pride, chuckled. “I can see that.” He grinned reading the words ‘we miss you daddy’. “Oh and Gen told me Sheppy learned a new word at the pool the other day.”
“Okay?” Lexi gave him a confused stare.
“What was it?” Jared said playfully. “Oh yeah, bobbies.”
Lexi let out a laugh. “Dude, I was holding him and he just pinched me and shouted ‘boobies!’ I just take it That he will be a boob man.”
Jared shook his head with another laugh as they headed to the car. Once inside Lexi turned to him. “Locate the nearest Starbucks, please. I feel like a zombie.” She told him buckling her seat belt.
Pulling around the corner Lexi handed Jared a card. “Venti iced cinnamon dolce, please.”
“Put that away.” Jared instructed as he turned and order both coffee.
“Yes, sir!” Lexi gave him a mock salute.
It was a forty five minute drive to the house filled with small chit chat and catching up. Jared noticed something was different about Lexi. Sure, he hadn’t seen her in two months and she was a changing teenager, but something was indeed different. He couldn't put his finger on it.
Pulling into the drive Lexi gawked at the house. “Geez!” She looked tp Jared then back to the house. “It’s like ten times the size it looked in the pictures!” She exclaimed looking at the house for the first time.
“Yeah, well when you have three kids coming and going, you need big.” Jared said grabbing her bags and making his way to the door.
“Dude, I can get my own bags.”
“What do you have in here? A dead body?” Jared asked as he opened the door.
“No, that’s in the other bag.” She joked following him in the house.
“This is you room.” Jared told her as they reached up stairs. “Jensen got the room on the end and i’m across from you.” He sat the bags on the bed. “Do you need help unpacking?”
“Nah, I think I can manage.” She told him looking out the windows. “Dude you can see mountains!” Jared laughed at her excitement. “So, Jay’s directing this week?”
“Yeah, they had to reshoot a few shots that need to be in tonight. So looks like you’re stuck with me awhile.”
“Good, I may need you for some high shelves.” She poked fun.
By late that night Lexi and Jared had unpacked most of the boxes. The sun had long set and the temperature dropped. It was much different from the humidity in Texas. Their evening was mostly spent laughing till their stomachs hurt and catching up on things.
“Lex, this small box of stuff, where do you want it?” Jared asked opening it looking through pictures and movie ticket stubs. “Looks like keepsakes.”
“Let me see.” She said walking over. Jared watched as her expression changed when she looked in the box. “Oh, um, just, I’ll, I’ll take it.” She grabbed the box and set it at the bottom of her closet, tossing stuff over it.
“An ex?”
“What? Why would you say that?”
“I know that look you had on your face.”
“You hungry?” She asked changing the subject giving little acknowledgement to the comment or question.
Jared, picking up on her reluctancy, went with her. “Grilled cheese?”
~
At midnight that night Jensen walked through the front door, tossing his jacket on the couch. “Where is my little punk!?”
“Hey you big dork!” She ran into his arms squeezing him tightly.
“How was your flight? I’m sorry I couldn’t be there to pick you up.” He held her hands in his.
“It’s all good. I had good company.”
“You look like you’ve grown since I last saw you!” Jensen looked at her.
“Just my boobs and butt.”
“Yeah, keep those covered.” He laughed pulling her into another hug before moving to the living room.
“Jared showed me a map of the city and I’ve already pinpointed the coffee shops and shopping centers.” Lexi explains sitting.
“Of course.”
“So, tell me, how is directing?”
~
The next morning Lexi was awakened by the sound of men laughing and talking loudly downstairs. Having went to bed in her normal tank top and shorts, Lexi was freezing. She would definitely need time to adjust to the weather difference. She drug herself out of bed and dug through a few leftover boxes till she found her Chili Peppers hoodie.  Pulling it over her head she  got up and headed downstairs.
The sun hadn’t even risen yet and the men walked around the kitchen bustling with energy, laughing.  Lexi walked into the kitchen and saw Cliff standing with coffee in hand.
“I’m sorry, punk. Did we wake you?” Jensen asked pouring a cup of coffee.
“Y’all have big mouths.” Lexi sat at the counter laying her head on her folded arms.
“That little touch of southern drawl is so cute.” Cliff said setting the cup of coffee in front of her.
“Cliffy, you always knew the way to my heart.” She said as she sat up.
“When do you start school?” Cliff asked.
“Monday.”
“Later wanna come hang on set?” Jensen asked lacing his boots.
“Seriously?”
“Yeah, as long as you behave.”
“Hell yes!” She told him. “Just let me get a few more hours of shut eye first. Beauty sleep is a necessity after traveling across the continent.”
“You’re beautiful.” Jensen told her as he leaned kissing her forehead before leaving.
~
Late morning rolled around and Lexi and Cliff were pulling up to the entry gate at Warner Bros.  Cliff handed her a pass. “Keep this on you till the guard and security get used to who you are. After the get familiar with you you won’t really need other than to get in and out of the lot.”
“Okay, got ya.” She slipped the pass over her head.
Cliff introduced her to people as they passed on their way to the set. When they reached the set Jensen greeted her in his normal tight hug and excitement. It was easy to see he loved having his little sister around. He boasted on her and made sure she met everyone she hadn’t had the chance to meet. When the camera was rolling Lexi couldn't help but be amazed at how precise her brother was behind the camera as well as in front.  She admired him in his determination to seek greatness in his task.
“Why do you look so concentrated?” Jared asked handing her a bottle or water.
“Jensen looks so in his element.” Lexi said. “And you,” She turned to Jared. “You are  intense during certain scenes, just, wow!” She chuckled.
“When you truly love your job it comes natural.”
“Yeah, well I hope I find something I’m this passionate about.”
“You plan on going to college?”
“Yeah. I’m expected to.” She sipped on her water. “It’ll help me figure out what I want to do with my life. I haven’t even decided on a university yet.”
“Actually, I only have till the end of the school year.”
“Oh, right!” Jared pointed. “You’re a few grades ahead.”
“Yup, weirdo smart kid, right here.” Lexi pointed at herself.
“Nothing wrong with being smart.” Jared commented.
Lexi spent the entire rest of the day on set observing every possible thing she could. Lexi always had a love of learning. She was like a sponge just waiting to absorb whatever she could and took advantage of every opportunity she had to learn something new. After eight hours of asking questions and taking note of all that was going on around her, she made herself comfortable in her big brother’s chair.
“Somebody is worn out.” Jared said motioning to Lexi laying with her legs draped over one side of the chair and her head on the other, arms crossed over her chest.
A smile spread across his lips as he looked over seeing his little sister. Making his way over, he pushed her hair from her face. “Hey, punk, wake up.” He spoke softly.
Lexi opened her eyes and gave a chucked as she exhaled. “I totally just fell asleep in your chair didn’t I?” She covered her face with her hands.
“But you look so cute.” Jared crooned showed her a picture he’d taken on his phone.
“Oh, God, delete that!” She said standing. ~
Monday morning rolled around and by five am Lexi was already wide awake. Her nerves wouldn’t allow her to sleep much later than four thirty that morning. She sat at the counter with a cup of coffee dress in her new school uniform.
“Nice threads, preppy.” Jensen smiled walking down stairs.
“Haha.” Lexi said sipping her coffee in the khaki skirt and white button down blouse.
“Nervous?”
“A little.” She shrugged. “Just not sure what to expect. What if people think i’m weird or make fun of my accent?”
Jensen sipped from his cup. “Okay, one, you barely have an accent. And the little bit of one you do have is adorable.” Lexi rolled her eyes. “And two, you will do great, because you’re an Ackles. We kick ass.” Lexi couldn’t hold back her laugh at him. “You sure you don’t want me to drive you?”
“Positive. Cliff will drop me off this morning and I’ll walk back.”
“Whoa, walk back?” Jensen asked hearing this new information.
“It’s not far.” She shrugged her shoulders. “I’ll walk the few blocks from school to the bus stop, then the two blocks from the bus stop here.”
“I don’t want you walking home alone. I’ll tell Cliff to pick you up.”
“No, Jay, I don’t want you putting people out of their way for me. I’ll be fine, I’ll manage.”
Jensen and Lexi had a stare down for a moment then Jensen huffed. “Okay, how about this, Cliff will drop you off and pick you up for one week.” He saw Lexi about to protest then he spoke again. “Just long enough to give you time to get used to the surroundings.”
Lexi rolled her eyes. “Fine, deal.”
Cliff and Lexi pulled into the school and she looked around at all the students with a mixture of anxiety and dread. “You’ll be fine.” Clif k9 f spoke. “If anyone messes with you, kick ‘em in the crotch.”
Lexi laughed. “I’ll keep that in mind.” She took a deep breath grabbing her bag. “Here goes nothing.” She opened the door.
“Have a good day and good luck.” Cliff said as Lexi leaned in the big black SUV meeting Cliff’s extended fist with her own. “I’ll be back at three.”
“See, ya.” Lexi said closing the door and walking into the school.
She found her locker easier that she thought she would. Placing her books in, she looked at the paper in her hand and found her first class. Finding a seat in the back of the classroom, Leci sat quiet messing around on her phone trying to remain unnoticed.
“Morning, class!” She heard a woman say loudly causing her peers to begin seating themselves and quiet down. “When you’re ready.” The woman said urging the students to settle suddenly. “We have a new student joining us.” “Lexi’s eyes shut in panic. Do they seriously do this in every country? Lexi thought.  The embarrassment of being introduced to the entire class when all you want is to blend in. As if being fifteen and a senior was bad enough. “Please, welcome Alexia Ackles.”
Everyone turned to her as she gave a small wave from her seat. “It, it’s Lexi, actually. E- everyone calls me Lexi.”
“Alright then, Lexi, want to tell us something about yourself?”
Not really, she thought. “Uh, I’m Lexi and I just moved up here from Texas.”
“Ackles as in Jensen Ackles?” A blonde girl with way too much makeup asked from across the classroom.
“Tall guy, green eyes, bow legs? Yeah, that’s my brother.” She said with a touch of cynicism in her voice.
“Welcome to Vancouver and welcome to Brookston, Lexi.” The teacher said as she then began her lesson.
Lexi was more appreciative that the focus was no longer on her. Taking a small but deep breath she took her books out and began following along with the lesson. She could do this, she told herself.

Tumblr media
Once again Cheryl woke up with a pounding headache and a hangover, the only difference being the fact that she couldn’t remember much of the night. After dancing with Veronica and seeing Toni, it’s pretty much a blank slate. Which means hopefully she didn’t do anything stupid in the time that she couldn’t remember, yet knowing her she always managed to do something stupid when she got blackout drunk. Hence why she was quick to roll over and make sure that there was no one in her bed this time around.
A small sigh of relief left the redhead girl when she knew that no one was in her bed and that no one was in her house. She rolled back onto her back, staring up at the white ceiling as she thought. She was trying to remember the most about the previous night but none of it was coming back to her, the thing that was coming back to her though was sleep. Clearly, she had an eventful night if she was still tired, but there was no sleep as her phone went off.
A groan escaped her parted lips as she reached for the phone, not even looking at the contact name she denied the call. But there was another one right after that so she knew that it was the young girl she had taken under her wing. “What Dani?” She said, a small tone of annoyance in her voice as she spoke to her. In all honesty, their relationship had always been a little bit on the younger and older sister side, so this wasn’t abnormal for them. “You said I could work today and you’re not here.” At her words, she realized that it was both Sunday and that she was running late. She knew very well that by the time she was ready to go she was going to miss some of the usual old ladies that came every Sunday morning. So with a soft sigh, she was probably about to do one of the more regrettable things she going to do all day, mostly because she didn’t fully trust the young girl to run her shop.
“You can open up today.”
“Yay, love you!” “Love you too Dani.” She mumbled before hanging up on the girl, rolling over in bed and putting a pillow of her head. If she was being honest, Cheryl could easily fall back to sleep but she had no intention of doing that because Dani running the store meant bad things. So she dramatically rolled out her bed with a small groan, making her way to the bathroom so that she could shower and not show up smelling like alcohol.
Once she was showered and dressed she made he way to the kitchen to find something to eat before she had to face a long day of working with a hangover. Unable to find anything she let out a frustrated groan, adding grocery shopping to the list of things she had to do that day. So she grabbed her keys and decided that she could make a stop at Starbucks and be a few more minutes late to the start of her usual Sunday morning.
There was nothing that Cheryl hated more than being late, besides imbeciles, still if she was going to be late she would at least come to work fed. It was pointless to be running late and not eat, an extra ten minutes wasn’t going to kill her. Granted she was about two hours late, but that just made the ten minutes seem like a lot less time compared to if she was fifteen minutes late.
So, once she had food she found her way to the shop, her head still pounding as an excited Dani ran over to her and gave her a hug. She was happy to see the younger girl, but her headache had different feelings about the excited greeting that she had been given. Still, she gave the excitable girl a hug back, using one hand as to make sure that her coffee wasn’t spilled on the floor–– that was the last thing that she needed right about now.
With a hum she pulled away, examining her shop to make sure that there was no damage to be found to both the structure and the delicate flowers that sat on the shelves. Satisfied with finding nothing wrong she started walking back to her office, letting her heels click on the tile as she walked away. “Maybe I should let you open up more often, you didn’t do a terrible job.” She teased lightly as she set her things down.
Once she was back out in the main part of the shop she went to check on the cash to make sure that it was all set, only to find a blushing Riley sitting behind the counter with an apron on. “Oh hello Riley, you making yourself at home?” A questioning eyebrow raised at the girl as she waited for an answer, looking over at her little sister too as a smirk played on her features.
“I was bored and I wanted something to do- Wait! I don’t mean do as in sex, I mean do as in keep me company! Flowers are nice and all but you can’t have a conversation with them, plus they aren’t as cute as Riley is.” There was a bright blush on Dani’s cheeks as she rambled to the older redhead, not sure what to do about the whole thing. It was cute and it reminded Cheryl of the numerous times she had re-explained herself when she was in college, mostly when she was talking to the hot professor that taught her business class.
So, Cheryl only gave her a small smirk before going to grab her own apron to throw over her body. “What I’m hearing is Riley is looking for a no-pay job?” She said, continuing to tease the two of them as she made a mental note to offer the other girl a job. Paying her wouldn’t be a problem, the only reason that Cheryl was generally the only one who worked there that she didn’t need to extra hands. Still she was willing to make room for those that she cared about.
“No!” Riley exclaimed, standing up to her full height of 5’9”, which was granted taller than the other redhead in the room. “I mean, I would love pay.” The girl gave her a big grin, always being a happy and energetic person. She was a hot-shot sports player so it kind of went with everything really well, actually everything about Riley was a little too put together but Cheryl never thought much of it–– That would change within the next few months though.
Still, Cheryl gave her a smile back but before she could reply there was a ring the bell that told them that a customer had just walked in. All three pair of eyes go to the person at the door, and of course, it’s the one person that the eldest redhead tried so hard to avoid when she could. Which is why the smile that had been on her features had fallen so that her face was almost completely rid of any emotions. “How can I help you?”
There was an easy smirk on Toni’s features, which annoyed Cheryl because she looked so smug but also so hot at the same time and it left her as one ball of confusion. “Can I talk to you? In private.” She threw in a wink as she ended her sentence, mostly for the entertainment of the two teenagers who were shoving Cheryl towards the door without much hesitation.
“Go take a walk, we can man- or should I say, woman?- the shop for another twenty minutes, we’ve done okay so far.” Despite the fact that Dani seemed to be trying to convince to Cheryl, she was really just hoping that if she talked enough that her boss wouldn’t try and protest against the going. “Plus the fresh air will do the hangover wonders even if you don’t want to admit it and going on a walk will be great cardio- that you need because you skipped Sunday morning yoga.”
Cheryl didn’t attempt to protest as she listened to the younger girl talk, only shaking her head in response to be shoved out of the door of her own flower shop. “You better not burn down my place in the twenty minutes this walk takes.” She gives them a stern look before rolling her eyes at the smug look that remained on the face of the tattoo artist. “Stop looking so smug, I don’t even want to talk you.”
This got a nice chuckle out of the shorter girl as they began there walk down the quiet street where they both worked. It wasn’t the fanciest place in the city but it was definitely on the more upscale side of things, which is why Cheryl wondered how there was a tattoo shop that had found its way next to her simple flower shop.
“If you didn’t want to talk to me then why did you agree to leave your shop so easily?” The tattoo artist is quick to challenge, raising a perfectly manicured eyebrow in the direction of the redhead. Yeah, she could not tease her but she liked how flustered she could make the girl and how fast she could do it. The previous night had left her blushing and now she felt like she needed to make up for that. So, she was going to tease Cheryl and try her hardest to make her blush.
Her tactic worked, of course, worked and the redhead’s face was quick to match her hair. “Well, you see, uhhhh, the cardio is really good for me and Dani was right, I did skip my morning yoga and you know, fresh air can really cure a hangover.” Turning into a sputtering mess she tried her best to come up with any excuse for the walk that wasn’t she wanted to talk to the girl who was walking beside her.
“Mhmm, whatever you say, Blossom.” The doubt was clear in Toni’s tone as she spoke, her step easily falling in line with the girl she was walking by. After the previous night, she knew how the girl felt for her but she also wanted to see if she felt the same way for her when she was sober. The difference in sobriety could really affect the way that a person felt towards another human being. “So you’re nursing a hangover, do you remember anything from last night?”
The smirk that remained on Toni’s features turned to a concerned look as she asked her the question though, which sent a warm wave through Cheryl’s body. It was the idea that Toni cared enough to ask that left her cheeks an even brighter red than they previously were. “Oh uh, not really. I haven’t tried to remember yet.” She gave her a sheepish smile as she decided to not think back on the night before.
It was those words that made a small frown form on Toni’s features, only for a brief moment before it was out of sight and replaced with a teasing smirk. She could live with the fact that the feelings were nothing more than acting on drunk impulsive, but she hated that she got her hopes up for something. “Damn, Cheryl Blossom must not mess around when it comes to clubbing.” Her voice was light, hiding the slight twinge of sadness that she felt.
“We should part here, I just remembered I have an appointment. Call me if you remember our run in from last night.” With a wink, the tattoo artist turned on her heel and started her walk back to the tattoo shop. It was that moment that the previous night's memories came flooding into her brain, now that she was actually thinking past the pounding headache that was the byproduct of the night.
It took her through the start of it all and eventually ended with being dropped off by the girl who was currently walking away from her. There was a small tingling feeling in her lips as she remembered the previous kiss and the kiss before that. A lot happened the previous night and she knew she was going to have to face it eventually, but her brain didn’t want to focus on that.
Yet, her body seemed to have a mind of its own as she moved to grab onto Toni’s wrist and pull her back for a kiss. It was in public and if anyone she knew saw her she was going to have to deal with that, but she didn’t feel herself pull away as she kissed the tattoo artist. Her mind was screaming about how she shouldn’t be doing this but her body had control as her hands found the other girl’s cheeks.
The redhead essentially melted into the kiss that she started, not actually having enough confidence to continue being the aggressor through the whole kiss. Which was probably why she was the first one to pull away, her cheeks the reddest they had ever been and her breathing deep. “Woah, uh that was amazing.” Her voice is quiet before shes processed everything and is pulling away from the girl, an even darker blush forming on her pale cheeks- this time though, there was a slight tint to the other girl’s cheeks.
“I’m sorry, that was completely inappropriate of me and I have to go do things.” She stumbled over her words as she looked over at Toni, quickly moving past her in the direction of her flower shop.
“Things?” The tattoo artist called out after her, her eyebrow raised in curiosity but it didn’t hide her confusion for the situation. She wasn’t sure what had just happened, but she found herself watching the redhead retreat from her once again. As much as she wanted to help her come to terms with her sexuality, it was a lot more work than she thought it was going to be and she has no idea if she’ll be able to help her.
“I’m a busy woman, I’ll call you tonight.” And with that Cheryl was fleeing from the scene and was back to the flower shop in record time. She made a mental note to stop by the tattoo shop after work, knowing she was going to have to face Toni but also knowing that she could put it off for just a little bit later. What she couldn’t put off though was the bombarding of questions that came from the teenage girls who had been waiting for her in the shop.
She was quick to deflect all the questions as she put on her apron, giving different jobs for the two girls to do to keep them occupied. There were only a few hours before she was closing up the shop, which meant that there were only a few hours for her to prepare to see Toni. Yeah, she theoretically could see the girl unprepared but at the same time, she knew that was already going to leave her being too much of a flustered mess to function. For now though, she can daydream about what she wishes could be the outcome of the visit she is to make to Toni later that day.

Erin hadn’t even gone through the stack of paperwork she had dumped on me. I was surprised, to be honest. She was usually a little more diligent when she was turning over assignments. Maybe she was as angry as she appeared. I started flipping through the reports and sorting them according to which form they were. Then I alphabetized them. Then I went back and ordered them numerically, as I realized that we’d switched from names to ID numbers. Once I had everything sorted, I started checking each ID number against the casualty list from the attack and deactivated every report that no longer needed to be assessed. It was late in the afternoon by the time I had got that far. It was boring and thankless, and I needed a break. I poked my head into Erin’s office to see what she was working on.
“Hey, I’m going to run down to Starbucks for a latte. Want anything?” I asked. She looked up and smiled.
“I’ll come with.” She pulled her purse out and followed me out of the office. “How are those reports coming?”
“Erin, you should have told me you were so far behind on them. I could have helped you,” I admonished her. A scowl flashed across her face, but just as quickly vanished. I was sure she was hoping I hadn’t noticed.
“We had a lot come through while you were at the academy. I figured I’d be able to catch it up this week. Until Fury downgraded my clearance,” she grumbled.
“Where have you sent your resume?” I asked. Erin stopped and gave me a look of surprise.
“Oh my god, I was just blowing off steam, Annie!” She exclaimed. “I have no intention of finding another job. I was just pissed off.”
“Could have fooled me,” I commented as we turned into the Starbucks. She fell silent as we stepped in line.
“Do you think I should be looking?” She suddenly asked.
“Well, you’re obviously not happy. Venti non-fat London Fog please.” I handed some cash to the barista, and turned back to Erin. “Maybe you should be looking for somewhere safer.”
“Do you think my job is in jeopardy?” Erin pressed. I accepted my change and looked at her, long and hard. I could feel myself giving the ‘are you an idiot’ face to her.
“Erin, if you don’t follow through with what the director wants, your life may be in jeopardy. Isn’t that more important than a paycheque?” I demanded. “I mean, really. I get that this is not what you signed up for, but we’ve entered an arena now where risk-negation is far more important than personal pride. Don’t you think you’re being a little childish?”
“Wow. Tell me how you really feel,” she snapped as she paid for her coffee. We moved toward the pick up area. I could feel my cheeks flushing and my heart thumping in my chest.
“Okay, I will. I very nearly fucking died last week. I was a target in that attack. Everyone in our department that was at work fucking died except for me. So forgive me if I’m a little sensitive about this, but grow the fuck up. Fury is trying to keep you safe and alive as well as keep SHIELD running. If that means you need to put on a pair of runners and do five K, or take your fucking sidearm to the range and learn to defend yourself, maybe you should. Be more proactive about your personal safety. And if you really don’t want to take those steps, then yes, I think you should be looking for a new job at a different agency,” I retorted. The barista handed my tea across the counter. I snapped a lid on it and walked out, not waiting for Erin.
When I got back to the office, I tossed a ‘do not disturb’ note on the door and shut it before getting back at the stack of reports. I connected my phone to my console and put my favourite playlist on to keep the outside distractions down and then started pounding away at the pile. It shouldn’t have taken Erin more than a few hours to resolve what she’d given me, and I was determined to get it done before I went home. I kept my head down and pushed through, completely losing track of time. There was a tentative knock at my door on the third repeat of the playlist. I looked up as Stark opened the door. I raised an eyebrow at him. Tentative was not in his nature.
“Hey,” I looked back down at the report I was working on as he sat down across from me. He kicked his legs up and crossed his ankles on my desk
“Your receptionist was just locking up when I arrived. She said you haven’t left your office since three.”
“I had a pile of crap dumped on my desk that should have been managed while I was away two weeks ago,” I explained. “It’s been a long day.”
“But Coulson sent hugs and kisses in his text message. You should be all swoony,” he teased. I groaned and opened my phone. I pulled the tracer sticker off and tossed it in the garbage, giving him a smug look.
“Stay out of my text messaging,” I said, for emphasis. Stark just laughed.
“Where are we going for dinner?” He asked.
“We are going nowhere for dinner, Stark. Anna and I have an actual date. No work tonight.” Phil caught Stark off guard, and Stark rocked back in the chair just enough that he lost his balance. There was some undignified limb flapping, and his feet crashed to the floor before he regained his balance.
“I know when I’m not wanted.” I had to hand it to Stark; he knew how to play the wounded drama queen. He rose and walked to the door, his face a mask of exaggerated sadness. I looked at Phil and back to Stark.
“You are not wanted, Stark. However, I think we should get together tomorrow and go over what we know and what we’ve discovered.” Phil gave Stark the bland smile that I’d learned was his business fuck-off. Stark glanced my way and seeing the set of my jaw, sighed.
“Fine. I’ll bring my secret decoder ring tomorrow and we can find out who’s been stealing the lightbulbs from Old Man Johnson’s backdoor.” He swept out of the office, leaving Phil and I in confused silence. I looked at Phil and back at the door and cracked up. Phil shook his head.
“So tell me about this coded message.” Phil and I were sitting in my living room, eating Thai take-away. I took a big mouthful of noodles and chewed.
“Kate’s grandma called today. She’s Kate’s next of kin,” I started, and took a sip of my beer. “I figured she was calling about Kate’s life insurance, but she wanted to tell me all about this hornet nest she had in her yard years ago. She said something about smoking it, so the hornets left it but were calm, and then setting off a bug bomb, and then burning the nest so they couldn’t come back. I thought she must just have Alzheimer’s or something, but when I looked in Kate’s file, it showed her grandma had been a field agent.”
“What’s Granny’s name?” Phil asked.
“Cecelia Banks,” I answered. Phil choked on a mouthful of Pad Thai. I smacked him on the back and handed him his beer. He took a drink and coughed a couple time to clear his throat.
“Cecelia Banks? Jesus, she’s legendary,” he coughed again. “Her name is constantly being brought up at the academy. She discovered a cell of traitors in the 60s, and she wasn’t sure how deep it went. So she planted false information about a project she was working on to root them out. When she knew the extent of the infiltration, she exposed the works. Basically burned the nest so there was nothing left. That was a fucking brilliant analogy. No wonder they say she was one of the best.”
“How could she possibly know the importance of sharing that story with me?” I puzzled.
“You should go offer your condolences to your friend’s grandmother,” Phil recommended.
“That’s an excellent plan. I’ll see if Barton can meet me earlier tomorrow so I can drive up. She’s in Philly. Think you can get away and join me?” I asked. He nodded.
“Yeah. Fury has asked me to keep an eye on you anyhow.”
“I thought you were the mysterious security detail,” I laughed. “Natasha was quite concerned that she didn’t know who you were.”
“How did that go today?” He asked. I launched into an explanation of my training time, and how incredible Natasha was. I mean, Phil knew what I was talking about, so I really had no need to be so descriptive, but it had been an excellent session, and I could feel the ache settling into my muscles. Natasha was a tough teacher, and was going to challenge me, and I liked that. Phil leaned back on the couch and watched me as I gestured and tried to demonstrate stuff we’d done all alone. The indulgent smile, and loosened tie, combined with his completely relaxed posture and lazy grip on his beer bottle made me stop, midsentence and just look at him. I cocked my head to the side and smiled. He raised his eyebrows.
“What?” He asked. I shook my head and collected our plates and took them into the kitchen and brought us each another beer. I climbed onto the couch beside him and stretched my legs across his lap. He wrapped an arm around my knees as I leaned into his side. When I handed him the beer bottle he smirked.
“I know it’s a little early in the week for a two-beer-evening, but I’m feeling a little less invincible tonight. I feel vincible. Is vincible even a word?” I asked. He laughed and kissed my forehead.
“I’m not sure.” He ran his hand along my bare leg. “Is this what you wore at work today?”
“Yeah. Why?” I started pulling the pins out of my bun and fluffing my hair.
“Complete with your glasses there on your blouse all day?” He nodded toward where my glasses were tugging at the front of my blouse.
“Yeah. Why?” I asked.
“I got a text earlier today asking if Librarian Dominatrix Barbie was my new girlfriend or if it was The Other One.” He put air quotes around Librarian Dominatrix Barbie and The Other One. “I guess Librarian Dominatrix Barbie is my new girlfriend.”
I wasn’t sure if I should be offended or amused. I chose to be amused. It wasn’t the first time I had been compared to Barbie. It wouldn’t be the last. I could be offended every time, and point out the obvious differences: my boobs weren’t that big, my waist wasn’t that small, I wasn’t tall enough, my panties weren’t permanently molded onto my body and I was able to bend at the waist. Or I could roll with it, and let people underestimate me. It was probably to my advantage to let people underestimate me.
“So do I smack you around with a riding crop or a dictionary?” I teased.
“Well, if you have a dictionary, maybe we can look up vincible before you start hitting me,” he chuckled.
“Be forewarned. All my dirty talk tonight will be in words of no fewer than four syllables,” I taunted, whispering in his ear.
“I don’t know if I’ve ever looked forward to castigation and deprivation more.” He leaned across my legs and placed his beer bottle on the table, then took mine and put it beside his. He lifted my legs off his lap and slid across me, pinning me under him on the couch.
“Hey! I’m supposed to be Dominatrix Librarian Barbie. Get off!” I protested. He shook his head and smiled. I briefly considered flipping him off me, but in the end, I let him stay where he was. He was warm, and his hands were rough and it was exactly where I wanted to be after my day.
While Phil was in the shower, I sent a quick email to Erin to let her know I was going to be out of the office for the day. I clicked through the other emails and saw one from Barton in response to my message about changing our training time. I quickly responded by text message to let him know I was available until ten, and by the time I’d hit send, Erin had emailed back, demanding to know why I wasn’t coming in. I opted to phone her instead.
“What the hell, Annie? You chewed me out yesterday and then locked yourself in your office for the rest of the afternoon and now you aren’t coming in today?” She snarled into the phone instead of saying hello.
“One of the casualties from the attack had a dependent grandmother, and she phoned me yesterday. She wasn’t making any sense. I need to go see her to find out what needs to be put in place to ensure her safety. I think she has dementia.” I was not going to rise to the bait.
“And no one else can do that?” The venom was just dripping through the phone at me.
“Considering she called me, I thought it prudent that I check into this myself. If she has some sort of memory loss, it might help to hear my name.” I hoped that made sense. I knew nothing about dementia.
“Fine, whatever. Do whatever you feel prudent, Madam Director.” Her tone was contemptuous. It was time to rise to the bait.
“You know what? Don’t bother coming in today either, Erin. You can take a day without pay for insubordination,” I replied coldly.
“Fuck you. I don’t answer to you. Unless Fury tells me to take the day off, I’m not staying home.” The line went dead.
“That went well,” I sighed.
“What was that about, princess?” An unfamiliar male voice asked from the kitchen door. I dropped the phone and whirled around. It was Barton. How he’d got in was beyond me.
“Jesus Christ, Barton!” I gasped. “You scared the shit out of me.”
I prayed that Phil had head us talking, but I could hear the shower still running. Barton looked through my cupboards for a coffee cup and sat down to drink his coffee. I leaned against the counter, between him and the hall to the bathroom and my bedroom, hoping to somehow intercept Phil before Barton saw him.
“Hey, Annie?” Phil’s voice floated down the hall. “Can you toss my shaving kit to me? I left it at the front door.”
I closed my eyes and fought to keep my face calm. I knew Barton would have noticed the shoes at the door, so he would be expecting my boyfriend. But he knew Phil well, and I was just hoping he wouldn’t recognize his voice. I turned to get the shaving kit from the entry, but when I moved to head down the hall, Barton blocked me, and took the bag from me. Without a word he walked down the hall and knocked on the door. I stood, frozen in place, where he’d left me. Phil opened the bathroom door. Barton dropped the shaving kit into Phil’s hand, turned and walked back to the kitchen. He sat down and looked in his coffee cup and up at me and then back to his coffee cup.
“What’s in my coffee?” He asked.
“Nothing,” I answered. The look on his face made my blood run cold. Barton’s eyes narrowed and he was across the kitchen and had me against the fridge in seconds.
“WHAT THE FUCK WAS IN MY COFFEE?” He screamed at me. Phil was in the doorway of the kitchen in a flash, towel around his waist, sidearm drawn and trained on Barton. If I hadn’t been so fucking terrified, I would have laughed. He only had half his face shaved, and the other half was still covered in shaving cream.
“Let go of Director Ellis, Barton,” he ordered. Barton looked at Phil, then at me. He looked back at Phil and his face fell. His grip loosened and he slowly let go of me, without taking his eyes off Phil. I saw a tear snake down his cheek and without realizing what I was doing, I reached out and rubbed his shoulder. He pulled away from me without looking in my direction. Phil lowered his weapon and placed it on the counter beside him. Barton took two steps to cover the distance between them and reached out hand to Phil. Phil, aware of his partial nudity, intercepted the gesture and turned it into a handshake.
“This isn’t the way I would have liked to tell you, Clint, but –“
“Jesus Christ, Phil?” Barton pulled him into a bear hug. Phil looked so incredibly awkward and uncomfortable. He patted Barton’s back stiffly, and then extricated himself from Barton’s arms. He backed up a few steps, grabbed his sidearm and pointed at the bathroom.
“I’m just going to go get dressed. I’m sure you have questions.”

Happy things
1. A few days ago my brother came up to visit me. We went to the dine in movie theater and saw some dumb sci-fi movie that I would usually hate and then we went to Starbucks and Paulys and it was so good. We talked about how after he graduates he's going to move down town and we're hopefully going to get an apartment together and it'll be so good and I'm just genuinely so happy that I have my brother back even though it still sucks for him but I think it's better this way. We also talked about how we are going to go to Florida on a road trip together this summer to go to Harry Potter world and I'm so excited. 2. Today I went and saw Cinderella and Audrey was a step sister and I'm so glad I went. Even though most of that ballet was super long and boring and messy all the parts with the step sisters were really funny. And she looked like she was having fun up there. And I saw my old dance teacher for the first time in a really long time and she hugged me and like idk I didn't really think I missed her but seeing her made me realize that even though she's kinda crazy she was a really good person to have in my life. And then I got to hug Odd and it was just a really good night. And I miss dance and creativity and performing a lot and I think I'm going to start doing stuff even just on my own with it again. 3. My mom and I went to Portillos after the ballet and it was fun and happy and good and I got her hooked on portillos cheese fries and it was happy. 4. I've been hanging out with Rory a lot lately and honestly she's so good. I think she might be my favorite person here, or at least the person I can talk to the most. I just feel like when we talk we really relate and have such good conversations and she's one of the only people here that I think really listens. She listens really well and I feel like she really cares. It's hard for me to believe that people care about me or enjoy hanging out and being my friend but with her I really think she does and it's weird because I've never really been sure that anybody wants to be my friend before but I'm pretty sure she likes being my friend just as much as I like being her friend and it's great to have such an equal friendship for once. 5. This weekend I'm going home and I'm excited. Although my bed here feels more like home now I haven't spent a lot of time with my whole family in a while and we are going out for Easter together. It'll be the first time that my mom, dad, brother, grandpa, grandma, and I go out in at least 5 years because my brother's ex has always come with. I'm also excited because I haven't hung out with any of my friends besides Chris and Leanne in like a month because I've never been home for the whole weekend. Hopefully Ken and I will go to the gym and hang out and I'll see Raven. And I'll finally have time to snuggle with Bolt again and I miss my dogs so much especially Bolt. Also I'm nervous because I'm going to Maggie's house on Friday and I don't really feel like I belong when I'm with that whole group but last time it felt okay and Rory is going to be there so I'm still excited to go. I feel like I've been getting out of my comfort zone more and realizing that things aren't as bad as I think they'll be. 6. There's only 4 weeks left of my freshman year of college. My grades are good even though I could definitely work harder. This summer is going to be really good. For my birthday I'm going to hang out with my friends. I think we are going to turkey run but I haven't figured out all the details yet. Even if we don't end up going ill for sure have people over to my house. And I'm excited to spend time with people over the summer. And have someone to kiss and go on dates with and whatever even though it's not a long term thing it'll make me happy. And when it ends again at the end of summer I won't be heartbroken again. It'll just be a fun summer with someone I love. I'm worried Taco Bell isn't going to hire me and I won't have a job but I shouldn't get too nervous until I actually reach that point. 7. My one year on testosterone is coming up soon and my top surgery consultation is in just a couple weeks. I'm very excited but also nervous. Mostly just excited. 8. I have such good friends and I love them all so much they're so good and even though there somehow manages to always be drama it doesn't bother me. I know sometimes I'm over dramatic and I can be annoying and stupid but when I'm with my friends here I don't feel annoying anymore. I feel like people think I'm funny and I really wonder what they say about me when I'm not around. Because I know that I have conversations about them with people so they probably talk about me sometimes. That's something I always want to know. But I don't think they'd say bad things. I don't know I just am starting to feel like I fit in somewhere.
